2019 Samsung Notebook Odyssey is a gaming powerhouse

The 2019 Samsung Notebook Odyssey gaming laptop was announced today. Samsung made an entry into the world of gaming PCs two years ago with the first Notebook Odyssey. It followed that up with the Odyssey Z last year. Samsung has scaled down its laptop business over the years but this goes to show that it’s serious about competing in this segment.

It won’t be easy as the gaming laptop market has some well-established players such as Razer. The Korean company doesn’t seem to be too flustered by them otherwise it wouldn’t have launched this notebook. It’s more powerful than any of its predecessors and looks good too.

The design features an unconventional centered hinge which is a first for the Odyssey series. The bezel around the display has been reduced to provide a more immersive experience. The latest Intel 8th Generation hexa-core i7 processor can be found under the hood with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 GPU.

Twin redesigned Jet Blade blowers with 83 blades each keep the machine cool with a new penta-pipe cooling system. Performance options include Odyssey Mode which lets users save settings presets under different profiles for different games. With Beast Mode, users can modulate the notebook’s performance depending on the software it’s running.

There’s 16GB of RAM and a 256GB NVMe SSD coupled with a 1TB hard drive. The storage is user-replaceable. The 2019 Samsung Notebook Odyssey features a 15.6-inch 1080p display with a 144hz refresh rate. There’s a USB Type-C port with three USB-A ports as well as HDMI.

Weighing 2.4kg with a 52Wh battery, the 2019 Samsung Notebook Odyssey will be available in the United States early this year. Samsung will also be releasing it in Korea, China and other select regions down the line. Pricing has not been confirmed.

Galaxy S10 edge and Galaxy S10+ battery sizes rumored

The battery capacity on the Galaxy S10 Lite has pretty much been officially confirmed, but what about the other two Galaxy S10 models? Well, according to leakster Ice universe, Samsung could stick to the battery sizes we saw on the Galaxy S9+ and the Galaxy Note 9. So we’re looking at a 3,500 mAh on the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 edge and a 4,000 mAh battery on the 6.4-inch Galaxy S10+.

While this is simply a rumor, those battery capacities could be correct. With a 4,000 mAh battery on its spec sheet, the Galaxy S10+ will be the one to get for those looking for the best version of Samsung’s upcoming flagship. And the more efficient Snapdragon and Exynos chips that will power the Galaxy S10 should help battery endurance on all three models, or at least ensure that it’s not worse compared to their predecessors. Let’s not forget that Android Pie also comes with a few battery enhancing tricks that could make a considerable difference in practice.

As usual, it’s best to take this information with a pinch of salt, no matter how probable it may seem. We will hopefully get some concrete evidence about the battery sizes on the Galaxy S10 edge and Galaxy S10+ as we inch closer to the official launch, perhaps through the same certification process that revealed the Galaxy S10 Lite’s battery capacity.

Samsung smart TVs are getting iTunes and AirPlay 2 support

Here’s something you may not have expected. Samsung’s 2018 and 2019 smart TVs are getting iTunes and support for AirPlay 2. Samsung confirmed today that it will be offering iTunes Movies and TV Shows as well as AirPlay 2 support on 2019 models starting this spring. It will roll out support for 2018 smart TV models through a firmware update later.

This is a big deal. The app will be available exclusively for Samsung’s smart TVs in more than 100 countries. Moreover, AirPlay 2 support will go live on the aforementioned models in 190 countries.

iTunes and AirPlay 2 support coming to Samsung smart TVs

Why is this a big deal, you ask? This is the first time that Apple is opening up access to its iTunes video library to third-party devices, with Windows PC being the only exception. It’s all the more surprising that Apple has decided to do this with Samsung, two companies that many consider to be the most bitter of rivals.

The app will enable Samsung smart TV users to access their existing iTunes library. They will also be able to browse the store to buy or rent titles. AirPlay 2 will enable users to play videos, music, podcasts, and more from Apple devices like the iPhone on their Samsung TVs.

It does make sense why Apple would pick Samsung for this. The former doesn’t make TVs so Samsung isn’t a direct competitor in this market. As much as people believe that these companies are always at daggers drawn, Apple and Samsung have long maintained a working relationship. The latter continues to supply parts crucial to Apple’s cash cow, the iPhone.

Samsung has a commanding position in the premium TV market so it’s a good fit for Apple. Since it’s expected to launch an online video streaming service later this year, this shows that Apple may also release this app for other platforms in the coming months.
