Galaxy S9, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 win US military approval

Samsung today announced that the Galaxy S9/S9+, Galaxy S8/S8+ and the Galaxy Note 8 on Android 8.0 Oreo have received approval from the US military. This means that military personnel can now use these handsets for official business. These handsets have been added to the Approved Products List for the US Department of Defense.

Galaxy S9, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 approved for military use

Getting this approval is no easy task as it involves questions of national security for the country. Samsung worked with multiple standards bodies to ensure that these devices comply with the needs of the National Information Assurance Partnership through the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation defined by the Defense Information Security Agency. Samsung also worked with the DISA to produce the Security Technical Implementation Guides which are required for deployment within the Department of Defense.

The devices are required to demonstrate compliance with more than one hundred unique requirements which range from encryption to intrusion detection to key exchange and support for secure network standards.

The certification process for devices also requires ongoing research and development from Samsung and a close working relationship with the United States government. There are only a few device manufacturers in the market that are granted this approval so this is certainly a big achievement for the South Korean company.

With this certification in hand, these approved Samsung devices can now be used by federal departments, agencies, and other highly regulated industries without any need for further modifications.

“Samsung is proud to have once again met the government standards of the DoD,” said Chris Balcik, Vice President, Federal Government at Samsung Electronics America.

Get new Always On Display and lock screen clock faces with this Samsung app

Samsung’s new Good Lock 2018 is packed to the brim with new customization features. It’s not available everywhere, but you can get some of its functionality, such as a neat new multitasking interface, to work with a few simple steps. And it seems there’s another new app that Samsung seems to have launched as part of Good Lock 2018, one that gives you nearly 30 new clock styles for the lock screen and Always On Display.

New clock faces for Galaxy devices running Oreo

The app is called ClockFace, supports all devices running Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.0, and has a variety of new clock faces that you can set separately for both Always On Display and for the lock screen. The new clock styles are quite diverse, and like the usual AOD clock styles, you can adjust their color based on your preference or set the color to change according to your lock screen wallpaper.

To use the new clock styles from ClockFace, download and install its APK file from our database, then follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on the phone, then tap Lock screen and security. For these instructions, we will adjust the clock style for Always On Display. You can repeat the same steps for setting the lock screen clock later on.

Step 2: First ensure you have Always On Display enabled. If it’s not, simply tap the toggle next to the Always On Display option to enable it.

Step 3: Now, tap the Clock and FaceWidgets option. Then tap Clock style.

Step 4: Here, in the clock styles you see for Always On Display, scroll to the end of the list and tap the last clock style (highlighted in the screenshot below).

Step 5: This is where you will see all the new clock styles installed by the ClockFace app. Select the clock style you want to use, then hit the Done button at the top.

Step 6: You will be brought back to the Always On Display clock style menu. Here, tap the Done button at the top right to apply the new clock style.

You can follow the same steps above to change the clock style for the Lock screen (just swipe to the Lock Screen tab in step 4). Remember, you can set different clocks for Always On Display and the lock screen. Do tell us what you think of the new clock styles that Samsung has introduced via the ClockFace app by leaving a comment.

A new Galaxy On smartphone with an Infinity display is reportedly launching in July

To counter the growing competition online, Samsung launched the online-exclusive Galaxy On series in India couple of years back. Devices launched under this series are exclusive to one of the major shopping portals and are meant to compete with the Chinese brands who have built a strong presence online.

Though Samsung created a new lineup, in reality, Galaxy On series phones are merely rebranded versions of the existing Galaxy budget devices. It appears the company is planning to repeat the same feat again. According to an IANS report, Samsung will reportedly unveil a new Galaxy On series phone with an Infinity display in the first week of July. The report states that the new device will have 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and an Exynos chipset under the hood.

 A rebranded Galaxy J6?

Since the company recently launched a bunch of budget Galaxy smartphones with Infinity displays, it seems pretty obvious, based on the previous models, that this new Galaxy On series phone will be a rebranded variant of one of these devices. While there is no evidence so far, it is very likely that this could be a rebranded Galaxy J6 with minor tweaks and online exclusivity.

Galaxy On models tend to be slightly cheaper than the comparable offline counterparts. The same pricing strategy may apply to the new model as well. Sadly, even with that pricing, the new Galaxy On series phone may not be able to beat or match the value proposition of Xiaomi’s hugely popular Redmi phones. Let’s hope Samsung’s latest offering packs unique features, other than the display, to stand out in the crowded market.

[APK] Steam Link for Galaxy lets you play your Steam games on your Galaxy device

Anyone who has played video games on a PC knows about Steam, the largest digital store for buying PC games. Recently, Steam released the Steam Link app for Android, which lets users play games installed on their home PC on an Android device (mobiles, TV, or tablets) on the same Wi-Fi network. While the Steam Link app is the same for all Android devices, Samsung has made a custom Steam Link for Galaxy app for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

Optimized for Galaxy devices

[APK] Steam Link for Galaxy lets you play your Steam games on your Galaxy device

Steam Link for Galaxy has a custom user interface that is simpler to use than the original Steam Link app. Well, maybe simpler isn’t the right word. The Galaxy version of the app has a more attractive user interface, and it doesn’t let you proceed unless you add a game controller via Bluetooth to the mobile device you want to play on. It’s possibly a limitation put in place because of the fact that you’d be unable to play any PC game on a mobile device without a proper controller, but it doesn’t exist on the original Steam Link app.

Other than that, Steam Link for Galaxy works pretty much the same as the regular app. Sadly, Steam Link for Galaxy is exclusive to the US and South Korea for now and a VPN doesn’t let you work around that limitation. Since the Galaxy Apps store doesn’t let you update an app not available in your country, those not in the US or Korea would be better off with the regular Steam Link app downloadable from the Play Store, as otherwise they would have to download the updated APK every time they want the newer version.

Steam Link for Galaxy can be downloaded from the Galaxy Apps store (click this link on a mobile device to go directly to the Galaxy Apps listing). It is supported on all flagships since (and including) the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. We also have the APK available in our database that you can sideoad on to your device. Again, if you’re not in the US or South Korea, it’s best to use the Play Store version.

FM radio support arrives for unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in the US

Samsung made a commitment earlier this year to activate the FM radio chips on its upcoming smartphones in the United States and Canada. This meant that those who picked up a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ would be able to listen to FM Radio through the NextRadio service that Samsung teamed up with for this. While this was true for those who purchased a carrier locked variant, customers who went with the US unlocked models drew the short end of the stick.

FM radio support for unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+

After it was discovered that NextRadio only listed the carrier models of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ as supported devices, the company clarified that Samsung “mistakenly did not add the NAB FM API to the unlocked devices.” Its team confirmed the issue with Samsung and the company said that it would add support in the first update that it releases for the unlocked model.

As it turns out, US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ owners also drew the short end of the stick with firmware updates as well. It hasn’t released a firmware update for the device until now. Samsung has finally released an update for the US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Not only does it bring the latest security patch for the month of June 2018, it also adds NAB FM API to enable FM radio support.

Those who have already received the ARF4 update on the unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in the United States will now be able to listen to FM radio through NextRadio. They should have no problems anymore in accessing this feature. Users will need to plug in their headphones for the antenna, though.

This problem had a simple fix but users had to wait for so long just because Samsung didn’t release an update for this variant for almost four months. It’s these unexplained delays that often frustrate the Samsung faithful and sully the user experience on its otherwise great flagship devices.

US unlocked Galaxy S9 gets a new update at last

Most people opt for factory unlocked models because they want to be free of carrier bloatware and delays in firmware update release. The latter hasn’t really been true for owners of US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. We reported two weeks ago that the handset was still on a security patch that was four months old.

Many customers have expressed their frustration at Samsung over this but they finally have something to look forward to now. Samsung is rolling out the first new security update for the US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in months.

US unlocked Galaxy S9 update

Up until now, US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ units were on the February security patch. Owners didn’t like the fact that some carrier versions have already received subsequent security patches while the unlocked models that are supposed to get their updates directly from Samsung received none.

Samsung’s track record with updates for unlocked units leaves a lot to be desired. When questions were asked about why the Oreo update for the US unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ was taking so long, the company said that updates for unlocked units take longer because it has to ensure compatibility with all networks and not just one in the case of carrier-locked variants. While a bit excessive, that three-month wait could have been justified for a major platform update, but not for a minor update which just brings the latest security patches.

Even though the latest update for the US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ weighs in at 700MB, it doesn’t bring much except the June 2018 security patch which contains fixes for all of the vulnerabilities found in the previous months as well. Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G960U1UES2ARF4 and G965U1UES2ARF4 for the handsets. Visit our firmware database to download the firmware files for the US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. One can only hope that the next security update for these devices won’t take another three months.

Galaxy Note 9 gets FCC approval as its rumored launch date approaches

The Galaxy Note 9 has just been approved by the FCC, supporting recent reports that Samsung would be taking the stage on August 9 to unveil its next flagship. Well, the approval was granted to the phone on April 20 and it’s only the official documents that have been posted this week. But it’s worth noting that Samsung is now back on track with its flagship launches, following the delays the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 went through as the company spent extra time polishing things up after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle back in 2016.

Galaxy Note 9 will soon be here

Galaxy Note 9 gets FCC approval as its rumored launch date approaches

The FCC has certified the international variant of the Note 9, which will carry model number SM-N960F (the Note 8 was SM-N950F). The dual SIM model (SM-N960F/DS) and a variant (SM-N960X) that should be released in Asian markets like Pakistan have also been certified. But, as is most often the case, the FCC isn’t offering any information on the device’s specs. The Note 9 isn’t expected to change much in terms of design, but rumors say Samsung could be equipping the phone with a 4,000 mAh battery and faster wireless charging. Other Galaxy Note 9 specs, such as the chipset inside or the camera sensors, are expected to be the same as the Galaxy S9+.

Galaxy Note 9 specs could include 512GB of storage

Galaxy Note 9 gets FCC approval as its rumored launch date approaches

Of course, the Note 9 will also come with an S Pen. Reports say the S Pen has been improved, but there’s no word on exactly what the improvements would be. Oh, and the phone could be offered in a variant with 512GB of RAM. Whether this 512GB variant will be made as widely available as the 256GB Galaxy S9 remains to be seen. Last but not the least, Samsung will be debuting Bixby 2.0 – which will offer improved response times – alongside the Galaxy Note 9. The Bixby Speaker could be unveiled at the same event as well, with quite a few interesting features as we had pointed out in our exclusive report.
