07-14-2015 Firmware Updates: Galaxy A3, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S6 edge, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

New Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ renders surface

The Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ are just weeks away from their unveiling, and while we’ve seen photos of Note 5 models in cases prior to now, the new photo renders confirm much of what we’ve already seen. Still, multiple photo renders may plant it firmly in the mind and help with one’s expectations of the device.

Today’s photo leaks come from GSMArena, who obtained their photo renders from ITSKINS, a case manufacturer who will undoubtedly craft cases for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+. Let’s start with the Galaxy S6 edge+.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ is a supersized version of the Galaxy S6 edge (nothing new here), and, once again, users will need to prepare themselves for the camera bulge found on the back of the device with the rear camera. There is only a USB 2.0 charging port here (no leap forward to USB Type-C that was rumored and expected), which means that you’ll still have non-reversible charging cables this year. The speaker and charging port, among others, are all located at the bottom of the S6 edge+, which matches what we’ve seen in the S6 edge. GSMArena says that the design looks to have a glass back, which means no removable battery and no microSD card slot.

Moving on to the Note 5, everything appears to be the same externally, which matches the S6 edge+, but one thing remains: the camera. Whereas the S6 edge+’s rear camera will bulge in the same manner as the S6 and S6 edge, the Note 5’s bulging camera seems to be less protrusive and better made to fit on the back of the device, as you can see below. The reason for these rear camera differences is simple: thickness and thinness. While the Galaxy S6 edge+ is only 6.9mm thin, the Note 5 will be 7.9mm thin. The extra 1mm of thickness will not only allow Samsung to fix the protruding camera of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but also pack a larger battery in the Note 5 (a 4,100mAh battery) that will more than make up for the device’s non-removable battery.

As for storage, you will be disappointed to know that Samsung will not grant expandable storage for the Note 5 this year, which is a big blow to many who regard the device as a productivity device. What you must keep in mind, however, is that Samsung has always provided more storage for its Note line than it has the Galaxy S series – so Samsung may up the traditional Note storage from 32GB to 64GB, as a “helping hand” to Note 5 users. In other words, the microSD card slot will become irrelevant for a number of individuals.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ will feature the same 5MP front camera and 16MP back camera with f/1.9 apertures, in addition to Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 7420 processor (the same found in the S6 and the S6 edge) and 3GB of Samsung’s all-new LPDDR4 RAM. The Galaxy Note 5 will have a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a Quad HD screen resolution (2,560 x 1,440p), an Exynos 7422 processor (ePOP) that will provide the CPU, GPU, LTE, RAM, and storage on a single chip, with the smartphone world’s groundbreaking 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM (as opposed to the 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM on the Asus ZenPhone 2), a 4,100mAh battery, and perhaps a pre-installed Write on PDF function. Both the S6 edge+ and the Note 5 will be announced on August 12th, with sales to commence on August 21st.

Exclusive: No Galaxy Note 5 for Europe at launch?

We revealed a boatload of information on the Galaxy Note 5 earlier today (and on the Galaxy S6 edge+ as well), and we now have a few details on Samsung’s launch plans for the phablet over in Europe. Well, details on the lack of any such plans if we go by the fact that Samsung has currently put firmware development for the European region on hold.

Countries like North America, South Korea, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Asia will be seeing the Galaxy Note 5 hit retail shelves, but neither Samsung Europe nor Samsung Russia seem to be working on the phone’s software. It’s not that the Note 5 won’t come to these regions at all, but it is possible the launch will be limited to a lesser number of markets than what we’re used to for Samsung’s flagship smartphones.

We’re only guessing here, but it’s also possible Samsung wants the Galaxy S6 edge+ to also see some attention in these regions when it launches alongside the Galaxy Note 5 in August; that could be why Samsung is delaying the latter’s release, and it could be that the company will follow its launch schedule of previous devices in the series and complete worldwide availability somewhere in October or later this year.

Like everything we learn from our insiders, anything and everything can change in the future, but for now it looks like consumers in Europe, Russia and possibly a few other regions will have a longer wait than others before they get the option to officially buy Samsung’s next S Pen-toting flagship.

Samsung handsets with fingerprint sensors now work with Dashlane password manager

The first Samsung handset to have a fingerprint sensor built into the home button was the Galaxy S5, since then the company’s flagship devices have had this feature and now Samsung is even bringing it to its mid-range devices. A fingerprint sensor provides users with an alternate method of controlling access to the device, it can be used for other functions as well such as logging into websites and authorizing payments through PayPal and Samsung Pay.

Password manager apps can expand this functionality further by allowing users to autofill information or log in to sites by just swiping their finger on the sensor. Dashlane is one such popular app that was previously not compatible with Samsung’s biometric technology but that changes today. It supports the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge, users who have any of these devices can access their notes, passwords, credit cards, personal information and more stored with Dashlane by using their fingerprint to verify their identity. Dashlane password manager is available for free through the Google Play Store.

Samsung Galaxy A8 officially launched

We have known for a long time that the Galaxy A8 is in the pipeline over at Samsung and today the company has finally launched this device officially in China. It’s one of the most feature-packed mid-range smartphones that Samsung has ever released and besides that it features an impressive metal build which really does lend a premium look and feel to the handset.

We have already shown you photos of the device and reported exclusively on its specifications but lets just run through them once again, the Galaxy A8 has a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD card support up to 128GB, 16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE connectivity and a 3,050mAh battery. Galaxy A8 also has a fingerprint sensor and it runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. All of this has been packed inside a metal frame that weighs 151g and is just 5.9mm thin, making it the thinnest smartphone yet from Samsung, that also happens to be virtually bezel-free.

The Galaxy A8 has only been launched officially in China right now where it’s available to pre-order in white, black and gold colors. Samsung is yet to confirm whether or not it’s going to release this handset in other markets across the globe.

Exclusive: Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ coming August 12, on sale from August 21

Going by Samsung’s usual launch schedule, the Galaxy Note 5 would be less than two months away from getting an official announcement at this point of time. Going by recent rumors, however, the time before the Note 5 is unveiled would be even shorter. Well, it looks like the latter is what we will have to believe in, as our insiders have revealed today the the Galaxy Note 5 will be announced on August 12, and go on sale around two weeks later on August 21.

We have also learned that the Galaxy S6 edge Plus will be launched as the Galaxy S6 edge+, and will be announced alongside the Note 5 on the same date. Samsung’s plan to launch two big handsets at the same time (and risking one device eating into the sales of the other) was leaked by a report out of the Korean press a few hours ago, and we can confirm that it is indeed what the company intends to do. The two devices will also be accompanied by the official launch of Samsung Pay, at least for the US market.

Now, let’s move on to a few details of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. First, Samsung’s next phablet flagship. Let’s get one of the most important aspects of the phone out of the way: The Note 5 will not have a microSD slot, something we had guessed would be the case earlier this month. In terms of design, the phone will basically be a blown-up version of the Galaxy S6. But like the Galaxy A8, the Note 5 will have extremely thin screen bezel, a design change that might come in handy in terms of ergonomics keeping in consideration the new metal and glass design that the Note 5 is expected to feature.

The S Pen will also be seeing a few design changes. According to the information we’ve received, the stylus will look more like a pen this time around (and apparently feel like one, too) and will have the same color as the color of the device. Speaking of colors, the Galaxy Note 5 will be offered in silver, gold, black and white options; these are the same options we’ve seen on the Note 4, though the glass construction on the Note 5 is sure to make these same-old colors look considerably better.

When it comes to the Galaxy S6 edge+, there’s really not much to tell. The device will be a phablet version of the Galaxy S6 edge, with a curve on either side of the screen and the same color options as the Note 5. We can, however, confirm that the S6 edge+ will be powered by the Exynos 7420 instead of a Snapdragon 808, and have 3GB of RAM. Oh, and as we said yesterday, the Note 5 will certainly become the first Samsung phone to feature 4GB of RAM. We’re guessing storage options would be the same as the Galaxy S6 lineup, though it would be great if Samsung would make the 64GB variant the base model to make up for the lack of expandable storage.

Provided all the information we have been given turns out to be correct, Samsung’s next UNPACKED event could be one of its biggest yet, if only because of the number of things it will announce on a single day. The August launch seems too early to be true, but with numerous rumors pointing at Samsung moving faster with the Galaxy Note 5, it certainly looks like we will be hearing everything from the horse’s mouth in under a month from now.
