2-2-2016 Firmware Updates: Galaxy J1, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Core Prime, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Galaxy S7 edge confirmed by Samsung’s own website, new edge features shown

There has been little doubt about the existence of the upcoming Galaxy S7 edge (or its name). Still, confirmation of both by Samsung’s own website is a welcome step towards the final launch.

Samsung has recently added a new section about the edge screen functionality on its own website where the company distributes SDKs and other such tools to developers. This section not only explains several edge screen functions, but also mentions the devices for which they will be available. The usual suspects, the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ are there, as is the Galaxy S7 edge. This confirms the existence (and the name) of Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone in one fell swoop.

Moreover, new edge screen features, which are the same as those of the S6 edge models after receiving the Android Marshmallow update, have also been showcased on the website. Next to the regular, narrow edge panels (‘Edge Single’), there will be wider type (‘Edge Single Plus’) panels that offer more information and functionality. These wider edge panels will definitely please those who liked the extensive functionality of the edge screen panels on the Galaxy Note Edge.

It is good to see Samsung actively seeking new and improved ways to make use of a feature that, until now, mostly wowed users with beauty but fell short on with functionality part. The Galaxy S7 edge is off to a good start, it seems.

Camera bump on Galaxy S7 and S7 edge to be just 0.8mm thin

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge last year, people complained about the camera bump on its back. Many questioned Samsung’s incapability in making the back of the device flush with its camera sensor. However, most of the rumours and reports from the past couple of months cited that the camera bump on the Galaxy S7 duo won’t be as pronounced as its predecessor’s.

Now, a new image has surfaced that explains exactly how much the camera protrudes above the back surface of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. According to @OnLeaks, the camera bump on the Galaxy S7 is around 0.8mm, which is less than half the thickness of the camera bump on the Galaxy S6 (1.7mm). This reportedly makes the camera bump “almost imperceptible“. Recently released devices in the Galaxy A (2016) series have a very thin camera bump, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Galaxy S7 carries something similar.

The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge are expected to ship with 12-megapixel camera sensors and bigger batteries when compared to their predecessors, but the overall thickness of these upcoming smartphones is not known yet. Everything will be clear once Samsung officially unveils its next-generation smartphones on February 21 along with the Gear 360 virtual-reality camera.

Galaxy S7 to feature a curve in design, more pronounced than the Galaxy Note 5

Samsung has experimented with curved design since its Galaxy Round and flexible YOUM displays that are rather futuristic, if you look at the current market. The Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ are the closest thing to curved design from the Korean giant we’ve ever seen, but Samsung isn’t done with curves just yet. The latest insider leak from OnLeaks shows that rumors have underestimated the Galaxy S7’s true design language. The leakster provides the latest drawing to show the difference in design between the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S7: while the Note 5 has a flat back cover with a camera hump, the Galaxy S7 will have a curved back – with a less pronounced, though still present, camera hump, as we reported a month ago.

Yes, it’s true that we’re not looking at a fully flexible smartphone, but we are looking at a more flexible smartphone than the Galaxy Note 5. If you remember, the Galaxy Note 5 bears the “edge” design language that Samsung brought over from the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ on the left and right back of the device. The new curved language of the Galaxy S7 will not only include the left and right sides of the back, but also the top and bottom edges of the device as well.

What should Galaxy S7-hungry consumers and Samsung fans take away from this leak? The back of the Galaxy S7 won’t be flat, which is insider knowledge we’ve not yet seen until now, and the camera won’t be, either. Fortunately, the unveil date, February 21st, is right around the curve (I mean, corner). We expect to see, in addition to the Galaxy S7’s design language, the leaked specs and features that aren’t much of a surprise at this point. As for performance, the Galaxy S7 provides 17 hours of video playback on its 3,000mAh battery, takes 100 minutes to go from empty to full, and can charge up to 50% in 25 minutes – just five minutes faster than the current charging on the Galaxy Note 5.
