Samsung’s 2020 TV lineup offers unmatched collection of streaming apps

Samsung has announced that its 2020 smart TV lineup offers an unmatched collection of audio and video streaming apps in the UK. The company claims that the app library on its new TVs is the most competitive in the market. The latest upgrade is now live across Samsung’s complete lineup of Full HD, 4K, and 8K smart TVs.

The company said that users in the UK would now have access to over 50 apps from the likes of Apple TV, BBC iPlayer, BT Sport, Disney+, ITV Hub, Netflix, NOW TV, Prime Video, Rakuten TV, and YouTube. The app collection on Samsung’s 2020 TVs includes Apple Music, BBC Sounds, and Spotify. Apart from these apps, the company’s new TVs also feature the Samsung Health app that offers more than 5,000 hours of fitness and wellness related content.

Samsung’s own free video streaming app, Samsung TV Plus, is also available in the UK. It’s a free linear TV service that requires no subscription or registration. It comes pre-installed on all Samsung smart TVs in the UK. It has over 49 channels that offer content such as documentaries, entertainment, lifestyle, movies, music videos, news, sports, and TV shows.

Guy Kinnell, Vice President of TV and AV at Samsung Electronics UK Ltd, said, “This is a proud moment for us at Samsung. Not only do our 2020 TVs guarantee access to the UK’s leading app platforms, an offer that is currently unique to Samsung, but we’re pleased to also be in a position to offer this upgrade across our full range.”

Samsung to launch Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition in purple

Samsung will reportedly launch a limited edition of the Galaxy S20+ in partnership with Korean music band BTS. The smartphone will feature the purple color, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip. This version of the Galaxy S20+ will be launched on July 9. This is the same day when the name of the BTS fandom (BTS A.R.M.Y) was announced back in 2013.

Ths South Korean smartphone giant has reportedly teamed up with French books and electronics store Fnac for the global launch of the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition. Pre-orders for the limited edition smartphone will start on June 19 and run until July 5.

The BTS Edition of the Galaxy S20+ will reportedly include a purple Galaxy S20+ 5G, purple Galaxy Buds+, and a pouch. The company is trying to imitate the success it achieved with the Thom Browne version of the Galaxy Z Flip, which also included the Galaxy Buds+ and the Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Samsung had recently released teaser videos of its collaboration with BTS on Facebook and Twitter, raising expectations for the launch of a BTS Edition of a Galaxy smartphone. The video showed a smartphone box with seven purple hearts, symbolizing seven members of the band.

Samsung BTS Collaboration Teaser

Samsung hasn’t revealed the price of the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition yet, and there’s no information on how many units of the limited edition smartphone will be sold. During the Unpacked 2020 event, V, a member of the band, appeared in the presentation and was wearing the Galaxy Buds+ earphones.

This Galaxy S20+ x BTS bundle confirms that Samsung’s partnership with the Korean boy band is much more than a simple marketing trick. Members of the group have been uploading images captured with the Galaxy S20 series on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Weibo, and they’ve garnered millions of views.

Galaxy Wearable update adds a couple of Galaxy Buds/Buds+ widgets

The Galaxy Wearable app got an update to version 2.2.30.20031361 not long ago, and while the changelog didn’t mention any notable changes or additions, we later found that the Galaxy Wearable update also comes with a newer Galaxy Buds Plugin version that adds a couple of useful home screen widgets.

The new widgets are seemingly compatible with both the original Galaxy Buds as well as the Galaxy Buds+. The update has added two 2 x 1 widgets, one called Battery info and the other Quick control. The former should be self-explanatory. It’s a battery monitoring widget that shows the battery levels on each of your earbuds as well as the charging case, but it is not interactive. Meanwhile, the Quick control widget allows you to enable or disable Ambient Sound and the touchpads directly from your home screen.

If you own a pair of Galaxy Buds and/or Galaxy Buds+, you can grab the newer update with the latest Galaxy Buds Plugin version, then you can set the widgets on your home screen by pinching it, accessing Widgets, finding them in the list, and dragging-dropping them on the home screen. Let us know in the comment section if you like these new additions to the ever-expanding list of Galaxy Wearable / Galaxy Buds goodies.

Samsung monthly updates: June 2020 security patch details released

As it’s already becoming tradition, Samsung started rolling out the June 2020 security patch to a number of Galaxy smartphones even before publishing the security patch details. After ensuring the highest security level for devices like the Galaxy S20, S10, Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung is finally detailing some of the vulnerabilities addressed by the new June 2020 security patch.

Unsurprisingly, the latest security patch fixes issues affecting both Android OS and Samsung’s own proprietary software.

29 SVEs have been addressed, most of which remain unmentioned

Concerning Android OS running on Galaxy phones, the June 2020 security patch fixes only two critical vulnerabilities, but contains fixes for 23 vulnerabilities deemed a ‘high’ threat.

Meanwhile, Samsung reveals that the June 2020 security patch should address 29 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures. The patch fixes one critical SVE, two high-severity SVEs, four SVEs of moderate severity, and two low-severity SVEs. They amount to nine SVE items, and the remaining twenty SVEs haven’t been detailed by Samsung on purpose for security reasons. However, some of these mystery SVEs will likely be disclosed at a later time.

While it’s difficult to tell which Galaxy smartphones will be getting the June 2020 security patch next, Samsung’s roll-out is in full force, so expect a notification to arrive on your phone at any moment, as long as it’s eligible for this release. Have you received the June 2020 security patch already, and for what phone? Leave a comment below.

Galaxy A30s gets new update and June 2020 security patch

A bunch of Galaxy phones have received the June 2020 security patch over the past couple of days. The general rollout has only just begun and the list of phones to get the update is constantly increasing, with the Galaxy A30s being one of the latest additions. Indeed, the Galaxy A30s is now getting a new update that pushes the firmware version to A307FNXXU2BTE4 and brings the June 2020 security patch along with it. As a quick reminder, firmware version A307FNXXU2BTD1 was released a few months ago and represented a more noteworthy leap from Android 9 to Android 10.

The firmware update is rolling out to the Galaxy A30s, model number SM-A307FN in Israel, but many other markets are bound to get the update soon. According to Samsung’s own changelog, the package shouldn’t include any newer functions or features, and this should be just a regular security patch, despite the firmware version suggesting otherwise. Even so, the June 2020 security patch should fix a variety of vulnerabilities affecting the Galaxy A30s software from Android OS to Samsung’s own proprietary launcher.

To grab the latest June update, tap the notification when it arrives or open Settings on the Galaxy A30s, navigate to Software update, and tap Download and install. You can circumvent this process by visiting our firmware archive, downloading the firmware for your specific phone/model number and region, and installing it using a Windows PC.

Galaxy A41 is going on sale in another European country soon

Samsung is bringing the Galaxy A41 to more European countries, with the company making the Galaxy A41 official for France today. Exact launch dates and prices are missing, but the Galaxy A41 should hit the shelves in France in the earlier part of June. Galaxy A41 support pages are already live on Samsung’s France portal, so all in all, the device is likely to go on sale in the coming days for a price of around 299 euros.

At least that is the asking price from Samsung Netherlands for the Galaxy A41. There’s still some margin of error, but it’s relatively safe to expect Galaxy A41 launch prices in France to be similar. What’s also similar is the hardware.

Triple camera setup and a relatively compact design

Although the Galaxy A41 isn’t really a compact phone, it still is one of Samsung’s smaller devices currently on the market. It has a 6.1-inch Super AMOLED display and it measures 149.9 x 69.8 x 7.9mm, or almost the same as the smallest Galaxy S20 model. And yes, it’s smaller than even the new Galaxy A11 (6.4-inch) and Galaxy A21s (6.5-inch).

Samsung also takes pride in this budget-oriented phone’s triple camera setup, or at least it makes a point in highlighting this component throughout its launch announcement for France. The rear camera combo comprises a 48MP wide shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 5MP depth sensor. The phone also has a 25MP selfie camera located in an Infinity-V display cutout.

Unusual for a Samsung device, the Galaxy A41 is powered by a MediaTek Helio P65 SoC. It has 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and crams a 3,500mAh battery with 15W fast charging in the relatively small body. The latter is painted black, blue, or white.

Are you going to buy the Galaxy A41 in France or elsewhere? What are the phone’s best selling points in your opinion? Leave a comment below.

Samsung India extends device warranties further amid coronavirus crisis

Samsung India extended device warranties a couple of months ago amid the coronavirus crisis, as shops and service centers around the country have had their usual schedule altered by recent events. The company initially extended product warranties until May 31; however, since the economy hasn’t yet fully recovered, Samsung India is now extending device warranties even further. Therefore, any products whose warranties expired between March 20 and May 31, 2020 can still be serviced under regular warranty conditions until June 15.

Samsung India has been doing a lot to alleviate the negative effects of the coronavirus lockdown, from donating funds and supplies, to bringing tens of thousands of offline retailers online in an attempt to boost sales, support local businesses, and continue to serve its customers. The company’s Exclusive Stores in India have become operational again, all the while acquiring Suraksha Store certificates to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its customers and employees.

Extending device warranties is just one of the many things Samsung had changed about its business, even if only temporarily, to support its partners and customers in these trying times. These renewed warranties should be most welcomed by eligible Samsung fans in India, but then again, we’re hoping the company won’t have to extend them even further in the near future. We’ll keep you posted.

Samsung Galaxy A01 hands-on: Budgeting for success?

Budget phones are where it’s at lately. Some of Samsung’s mid-range handsets like the Galaxy A10e have topped the charts even in key markets like the United States. With the global economy taking a turn for the worse because of the pandemic, we’re bound to see an uptick in demand for affordable devices.

The word “affordable” is relative, but for the sake of simplicity let’s just limit it to smartphones that cost around $100. There are plenty of options from Chinese OEMs in this range and Samsung is wading into the pool with the Galaxy A01. Clearly, the company is looking to succeed in this segment with this device. Its not as barebones as something like the Galaxy A2 Core but it doesn’t break new ground for phones in this segment of the market either.

Galaxy A01 hands-on: First impressions

The Galaxy A01 displays the Samsung branding on the back proudly but you need to have a keen eye and an understanding of where Samsung phones are made to realize that this isn’t a phone that the Korean giant is making itself. That becomes evident immediately when you spot the Made in China tag on the box.

This is actually another ODM (original device equipment) phone from Samsung. What that means is the Galaxy A01 is actually made by a third-party for Samsung which in this case is Shanghai-based Huaqin Telecom, a company that also makes phones for Huawei.

The phone is still made to Samsung’s strict specifications but the company is shifting some of its entry-level phones to the ODM strategy in order to cut costs and offer these devices at a lower price. The result is a device that doesn’t feel as “Samsung-y” as you’d expect and that’s largely because of the materials used and the way this phone has been put together.

Galaxy A01 display

As if the chunky chin wasn’t enough, the substantial bezels are hard to ignore as well, and that’s something that really takes you by surprise when you hold the phone for the first time. Some Chinese OEMs are pushing the envelope when it comes to bezels on low-end devices as well so you have to dock the Galaxy A01 some points for this.

There’s obviously no expectation that the display will be able to knock your socks off. The 5.7-inch HD+ Infinity-V LCD display can’t hold a candle to the AMOLED panels found even in the most affordable of Samsung phones. We have also found in our preliminary testing that it struggles out in bright sunlight as well.

Galaxy A01 performance

The Galaxy A01 is powered by the Snapdragon 439 processor and paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Qualcomm has made this chip, its first on the 12nm process, for entry-level smartphones. The octa-core chip allows for seamless multi-tasking on paper, but that’s not the impression you get even after powering up the phone for the first time.

Even before you’ve filled it up with your favorite apps and media, you can notice the phone struggling under the load as animations stutter and apps take longer to launch or close. That’s despite the fact that the Galaxy A01 runs on One UI Core 2.0, an iteration of One UI that’s optimized for low-end devices.

Galaxy A01 hands-on: Preliminary conclusion

Does it feel as compelling as a budget smartphone like something from the Galaxy M series even? After spending a couple of days with the Galaxy A01, we can tell you that it doesn’t. This device feels more geared towards not customers who routinely buy entry-level phones but more so towards those who may be buying their first smartphone.

In that particular context, we’ll look at the device’s performance, battery life, camera quality and more in our in-depth review of the Galaxy A01. Stick around, it’s going to be up in around a week.

Galaxy Z Flip now receiving June 2020 security update

The June 2020 Android security update is now hitting the international variants of Samsung’s first foldable mid-ranger, the Galaxy Z Flip (SM-F700F). Identified by build number F700FTBS1ATE3, the new software package started reaching compatible Galaxy Z Flip units just yesterday. Samsung deployed the firmware upgrade in a rather swift manner as the OTA package should already be available for download worldwide. On the off chance you’re still waiting for the notification prompting you to download the new patch, there’s always the option of installing it manually using a compatible image from SamMobile‘s Galaxy Z Flip firmware archives.

The U.S. variants of the foldable flip phone (SM-F700U) will presumably receive the very same update shortly. The OTA package itself is 203.09MB in size and doesn’t feature any other changes or additions beyond the new set of security patches.

Galaxy Z Flip still among Samsung’s top update priorities

The timing of the new security update’s arrival to the Galaxy Z Flip confirms the device remains among Samsung’s top priorities when it comes to after-sales support. Only the international models from the last two Galaxy S-series generations and the Galaxy Note 10 received the June 2020 patches sooner; yesterday, to be more exact. As always, you should ensure your device has sufficient battery charge left prior to starting the installation of the latest firmware upgrade.

Galaxy Z Flip sales are reportedly going reasonably well, especially in the context of current market instabilities stemming from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Samsung’s nascent family of foldable smartphones is expected to expand come August with the launch of the Galaxy Fold 2. Meanwhile, the South Korean electronics giant is also working on a 5G-ready Galaxy Z Flip model.

Exynos-powered Galaxy S20 series now getting June security update

The month has barely started, yet Samsung has already released the latest security update to a number of devices around the world. That includes the company’s 2020 flagship series – the Galaxy S20 lineup was updated with the June security patch in the US just yesterday, and a similar update is now rolling out to the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra internationally.

The Galaxy S20 series — both LTE and 5G variants — is getting an update with firmware version G98xFXXS2ATE7 in more than 21 European markets. The new firmware brings only security fixes for the month of June. That’s not surprising, as it was only two weeks ago that Samsung released an update that brought new features and improvements, including a new pseudo-macro mode for the Galaxy S20 Ultra camera and the option to turn off the fingerprint ripple effect animation.

The latest Galaxy S20 update should go live in more markets as the week goes on; our firmware archive is your best source for checking if the update has been released in your country. You can also download firmware for your Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20+ from our archive if you wish to update your phone manually, though we would recommend first trying to download it over-the-air. You can do that by selecting Download and install from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu.

Galaxy smartphone sales plummet as global pandemic rages on: Gartner

The sales of Samsung Galaxy smartphones are plummeting at an unprecedented pace as the world continues to fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak. While the South Korean tech giant did reasonably well – all things considered – in the first quarter of the year, its Q1 2020 sales still endured a historic hit, Gartner reports. According to the market watcher’s latest industry overview, Samsung’s mobile device sales over the initial three months of 2020 amounted to just over 55 million, down 16 million (22.7%) annually.

On the bright side for Samsung, it’s still the global leader by end-user sales, with Gartner estimating the chaebol managed to seize some 18.5% of the market in Q1 2020, down 0.6 points compared to 12 months ago.

Samsung’s Q1 2020 mobile sales hint at (bad) things to come

Gartner’s report, published Monday, offers little optimism for Samsung’s near-term prospects in the smartphone space. That isn’t to say this grim forecast is unique to the industry-leading handset manufacturer. On the contrary, the COVID-19 pandemic is already taking a comparable toll on Samsung’s rivals. Its number one competitor, Huawei, hence experienced an even sharper decline in smartphone sales year-over-year, as the table below illustrates.

While the Galaxy S20 series was hardly setting the world alight even before the majority of the planet went into lockdown, the silver lining for Samsung is that its timing is impeccable. If this was any other year, Huawei would have likely seized a significant portion of Samsung’s premium market share. In reality, the Chinese behemoth is preoccupied with staying operational in light of crippling U.S. sanctions, meaning Samsung has a debt of gratitude to the Trump administration.
