Samsung tops smartphone memory chip market once again

Samsung topped the global smartphone memory chip (DRAM) market once again. During the first half of 2020, the company maintained its number one position in terms of shipments as well as revenue. Its revenue share was more than double its next best competitor.

According to a new report from market analysis firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Semiconductor’s revenue share for H1 2020 was 49%, while SK Hynix and US-based firm Micron Technologies’ revenue shares were 24% and 20%, respectively. In terms of shipments, the South Korean tech giant’s market share was 54%.

In the global smartphone NAND flash chip market, Samsung’s revenue share stood at 43% during the first half of the year. Kioxia Holdings Corp. and SK Hynix’s revenue shares were 22% and 17%, respectively. According to the same report, the combined revenue in the smartphone memory chip segment was $19.2 billion during H1 2020. In Q2 2020 alone, the revenue stood at $9.7 billion, which is 3% higher than Q2 2019.

Due to the upcoming festive season, higher smartphone sales could lead to higher revenue for Samsung in both DRAM and NAND flash segments. However, US sanctions against Huawei is expected to have a negative impact on memory chip makers like Samsung.

Galaxy Note 10+ 5G gets October 2020 security patch on T-Mobile’s network

The October 2020 security patch is now rolling out to various Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G on T-Mobile’s network in the US. The Galaxy A50 was the first Samsung smartphone to get the new security patch. Later, the update was released to unlocked variants of the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 10, and the Galaxy Note 20 series.

The new update for the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G on T-Mobile’s network carries firmware version N976USQS3CTI8. T-Mobile’s official support page for the smartphone doesn’t mention the changelog but expect the new software to also include bug fixes and stability improvements. The update started rolling out yesterday, and it would have reached your smartphone already.

In addition to Android’s security vulnerabilities, the October 2020 security patch also fixes 21 Samsung-exclusive vulnerabilities. Last month, the carrier had rolled out the August 2020 security patch to the smartphone. It also enabled support for T-Mobile’s standalone 5G network in the US, offering improved connectivity and range where there’s 5G coverage.

If you are a Galaxy Note 10+ 5G user on T-Mobile’s network in the US, and the update hasn’t reached your phone yet, you can check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update on your device and tapping on Download and install.

Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong returns after meeting Dutch chipmaking equipment firm

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman, Lee Jae-Yong, had travelled to the Netherlands to meet the top officials of ASML Holding N.V., which is the world’s leading firm in the photolithography segment. The company makes critical components and equipment that are required to manufacture semiconductor chips.  Lee has now returned to South Korea after the important meeting.

Lee met with ASML’s CEO Peter Wennink and CTO Martin Van Den Brink. The meeting was held at ASML’s headquarters in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, and the discussions included the supply of equipment necessary for 7nm EUV and lower processes, cooperation on advanced chip manufacturing technology, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the chip industry. Lee also visited ASML’s plant to check EUV equipment.

The South Korean tech giant has been working with ASML since 2000 to improve its chip manufacturing processes. The company even made a strategic investment in ASML in 2012 but sold half of its stake in 2016. Lee had med ASML CEO in South Korean in November 2016 and then in Paris in February 2019. Samsung is trying to boost its competitiveness in the storage and logic chip segments, and trying to catch up with market leader TSMC.

Samsung said in a statement, “EUV lithography is an essential technology to make advanced chips used for artificial intelligence, 5G and autonomous driving applications. Samsung and ASML have been working together to solve technical issues related with EUV technology.

Recently, Samsung Foundry bagged chip-making contracts from the likes of IBM, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. The company is expected to unveil its first 5nm chipset, the Exynos 1080, for smartphones. However, the Exynos 1080 is not its flagship chipset. The company is expected to unveil the 5nm Exynos 2100 a few weeks before the announcement of the Galaxy S21 series.
