Galaxy Watch 3 gets Samsung Health update on Verizon’s network

The Galaxy Watch 3 has started receiving a new software update on Verizon’s network in the US. The new update brings improved Samsung Health, changes to the Always On Display mode, and the Hand Wash app. This update was already released to the Galaxy Watch 3 in other markets last month.

The new software update for Verizon’s Galaxy Watch 3 has firmware version R8xxUSQU1BUB2. Dubbed System Update 4 by Verizon, the new software brings various Samsung Health improvements, including challenging up to nine friends to walk with you, sleep score based on your sleep quality, quicker auto workout recognition (down from 10 minutes to 3 minutes) for running, rowing machine and elliptical, and a swipe-up gesture to finish the workout.

The update also brings various home workouts to the Galaxy Watch 3. You can select any fitness program on the Samsung Health app’s Fitness section on the connected smartphone, and the watch will show instructions and track your moves. There are changes to the AoD mode as well where the seconds hand will not be shown on pre-installed watch faces.

The Hand Wash app, which is available on the Galaxy Store, regularly reminds you to wash your hands. The app can also automatically track how long you wash them and helps improve hygiene. If you are a Galaxy Watch 3 user on Verizon’s network, you can check for the update manually by opening the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone, navigating to Watch software update, and tapping on Download and install.

Samsung appears to be working on a new Galaxy Buds model

Samsung has an amazing lineup of truly wireless earbuds. It currently consists of four models: Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Buds+, Galaxy Buds Live, and Galaxy Buds Pro. The company now appears to be working on the second-generation Galaxy Buds, and it might soon phase out the original Galaxy Buds, which are currently selling for less than $100.

A teardown of the latest version of the Galaxy Wearable app’s APK file by Android Police has revealed that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Buds 2. Going by its name, they appear to be the successor to the original Galaxy Buds. The upcoming Galaxy Buds’ codename is ‘Berry,’ and they will reportedly be able to connect to multiple devices at once.

Samsung might stop selling the Galaxy Buds (2019) and the Galaxy Buds+ (2020) once it launches the Galaxy Buds 2. Not much else is known about the upcoming truly wireless earbuds from Samsung, but we can expect them to go official by the end of this year. The company might unveil them with the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The Galaxy Buds+ have almost all the features that one would want from an affordable pair of truly wireless earbuds. However, it would be great if Samsung can bring features like Bluetooth 5.2 with LE Audio (the newest Bluetooth audio standard), multi-point connectivity, better call quality, and improved water resistance.

Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs are the world’s first TVs with Wi-Fi 6E

Samsung has been the world’s biggest TV brand for fifteen years in a row, and that’s not without a reason. The company consistently brings new and innovative features to its TVs. Last year, it became the world’s first brand to bring Wi-Fi 6 connectivity to its TVs. Now, the company has announced that it has become the first TV brand in the world to bring Wi-Fi 6E to its TVs.

The South Korean tech giant’s Neo QLED TVsQN900A and QN800A—have become the first TVs in the world to receive the Wi-Fi 6E certification. In addition to 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Wi-Fi 6E uses the 6GHz band to improve data transfer speeds. The new Wi-Fi standard also delivers data with very low interference and latency, improving the user experience.

Wi-Fi 6E routers and Wi-Fi 6E-compatible smartphones (like the Galaxy S21 Ultra) have already hit the market. With 8K TVs now available from Samsung and other brands, Wi-Fi 6E will play a huge role in delivering 8K videos seamlessly via its increased data throughput. This new Wi-Fi standard also makes wireless VR gaming and 4K game streaming more reliable.

Younghun Choi, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “As the global leader in the TV industry, Samsung is proud to have achieved the world’s first Wi-Fi 6E certification on our TVs. With a growing set of immersive content experiences and features across the home, the certification provides Neo QLED 8K TV owners with even better access to the things they love to do.

Samsung is now rolling out the One UI 3.1 update for the Galaxy A51

The Galaxy A51 is now receiving its second major firmware update of the year following the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 release that took place in February. One UI 3.1 is now rolling out for the Galaxy A51 carrying model number SM-A515F but availability is presently limited to Russia. The firmware is accompanied by the April 2021 security patch which was released for the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy Note 10, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 earlier today.

The One UI 3.1 update can be identified by firmware version A515FXXU4EUC8. The April 2021 security patch hasn’t been detailed yet, but it should be in the coming days or weeks. Regardless, the security patch isn’t the most exciting thing about the latest release, as most Galaxy A51 owners will be looking forward to the new One UI 3.1 features first and foremost.

One UI 3.1 brings a handful of new features such as the Eye Comfort Shield, video call effects, a new option to remove location data from photos before sharing them with contacts or on social media networks, new camera features, and a minor refresh to certain UI elements to make menus simpler to read and navigate.

Galaxy A51 owners in Russia should now be able to download the latest firmware update OTA (over-the-air) by accessing the Software update section inside the Settings app and tapping Download and install. The firmware is also available in our firmware archive where it can be downloaded for free and installed on the Galaxy A51 manually using a Windows PC.

Samsung’s early Galaxy S21 launch pays off as Apple loses the lead in Q1

Samsung was the largest smartphone maker in 2020 overall, but the company lost the top spot to Apple in the fourth quarter of the year due to the success of the iPhone 12 series. Nevertheless, it turns out that Apple wasn’t able to maintain the lead for long, as new reports indicate that Samsung has once again topped the global smartphone shipment charts in February.

Samsung has reportedly shipped a total of 24 million smartphones in February and has captured 23.1% market share, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics cited by The Morung Express. In contrast, Apple reportedly shipped 23 million smartphones over the same time period and has secured 22.2% of the market.

The gap between Samsung and Apple has narrowed

Although Samsung was able to retake the lead from Apple before the end of the first quarter, this appears to have come at a cost, as the gap between the two tech giants is now a lot narrower than it used to be in previous years.

Samsung usually held a market share lead of more than 5% over Apple in Q1 in any given year, but that’s no longer the case. The gap between them is now a little under 1%, which means that Samsung’s position remains under threat even though it is technically the top OEM.

Samsung had the foresight to combat the success of the iPhone 12

In light of this news, it looks like Samsung’s strategy to bring the Galaxy S21 launch closer to the iPhone 12 by a couple of months has paid off. As many of you know, the Galaxy S series has traditionally been unveiled in February-March, but the Galaxy S21 lineup was brought to the market in mid-January.

Assuming that the Galaxy S21 series would’ve been unveiled within the usual timeframe, this could’ve given Apple enough time to capitalize on the success of the iPhone 12 and maintain the lead throughout Q1 2021. However, Samsung’s decision seems to have worked in its favor, and it goes to show that the company has the foresight to realize when it’s under threat months ahead of time.

Moving forward, Samsung will likely increase the gap between it and Apple over the next couple of quarters with the help of its promising Galaxy A mid-range series.

Fifth Galaxy S21 FE color option leaks along with more camera details

Signs indicate that Samsung is developing another FE-branded smartphone for 2021 — the Galaxy S21 FE — and SamMobile exclusively revealed the upcoming model’s color palette nearly two months ago. We learned that the Galaxy S21 FE will be available in at least four color options: gray/silver, pink, violet, and white, but it turns out that a fifth color option — light green — is also in the works.

Five color options for a single device might sound like a lot for a standard Galaxy phone, but remember that the Galaxy S20 FE was released in six colors so it’s entirely possible for the Galaxy S21 FE — a direct sequel — to be just as colorful at launch.

Galaxy S21 FE will reportedly be equipped with a 32MP selfie camera

Not much is known about the Galaxy S21 FE but a little bit of information regarding the phone’s selfie camera was revealed by our colleagues at Galaxy Club. According to the report, the Galaxy S21 FE will be equipped with a 32MP selfie camera that may or may not have been borrowed from the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72. In essence, it doesn’t sound like a lot has changed on the selfie front from last year, though only time will tell if it’s the same exact 32MP sensor as before or a different one.

Industry watchers expect the Galaxy S21 FE to be unveiled in August around the company’s next Galaxy Unpacked event, and the phone will presumably borrow a few design elements from the standard Galaxy S21. We have learned previously that it will be offered with two on-board storage options — 128GB and 25GB — though it’s unclear if it will have expandable storage or if it will abandon this characteristic much like the rest of the Galaxy S21 series has done.

Samsung’s outdoor TV The Terrace goes live in the Netherlands next week

Samsung’s lifestyle TV for outdoors — The Terrace — will soon be released in another European country, the company confirmed today. Starting April, customers in the Netherlands will finally have the possibility of buying The Terrace in online and offline stores, and early adopters will have an opportunity to receive a dedicated soundbar for free.

Samsung’s The Terrace was first unveiled about 10 months ago and it reached Europe after it made its debut in Germany three months later in August 2020. It’s a very unique TV because it was designed for the outdoors. Therefore it has a very bright QLED 4K panel that can reach peak brightness levels of 2,000 nits. The TV has an IP55 dust and water resistance rating and it can function at temperatures between -31 and 50 degrees Celsius.

The Terrace will be available in three sizes beginning next week

Samsung will release The Terrace in the Netherlands for the starting price of €3,999. The price corresponds to the 55-inch model, whereas the 65 and 75-inch variants will cost €4,999 and €6,499, respectively.

The Terrace Soundbar will also be available from May for €999, but early adopters who purchase The Terrace TV from April 5 to June 27 will receive the soundbar for free. It has three audio channels with a built-in woofer and 210W of power.

Samsung says it will reveal more details about the upcoming offer via its promo landing page at Samsung Netherlands on April 5.

The One UI 3 update is now landing on the Galaxy A21s two months early

Samsung’s been doing a stellar job of bringing the Android 11 / One UI 3 firmware update to its eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and in some cases, the company has even released the update ahead of the original schedule. It happened with the Galaxy Tab S6 and Tab S6 Lite, the Galaxy A50s, and now it’s happening with the Galaxy A21s.

The Android 11-based One UI 3 update for the Galaxy A21s is now being distributed in South Korea where it carries firmware number A217NKSU5CUC7. As many of you might recall, Samsung’s original plan for the Galaxy A21s was to update the device with Android 11-based One UI 3 in May 2021. But as we’ve seen with a few other Samsung devices in recent weeks, the Galaxy A21s is now getting ahead of the curve and is receiving the highly anticipated update about a couple of months earlier than expected.

The update is available in South Korea but Galaxy A21s owners in other markets should also be getting it soon, assuming that the initial release won’t cause any unforeseen issues. Galaxy A21s owners who may want to check if the update is available for download can do so by opening the Settings app on the phone, accessing the Software update section and tapping Download and install. As usual, readers can also refer to our firmware archive where the latest update should soon become available for manual download.

Thanks for the tip, Amin!

Galaxy Z Fold 2 gets camera improvements, April 2021 security update

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is also joining the inaugural crowd for today’s release of the April 2021 security update targeting Samsung devices. As if that’s not enough, this newest over-the-air package for the foldable smartphone also includes a number of enhancements targeting the system Camera app. A succinct changelog summary (see below) accompanying the update notification says as much, informing users “camera improvements” are on the menu this time around.

Identified by version number F916BXXU1DUCE, today’s OTA release has already been spotted in Germany and Russia. More countries are expected to follow shortly, maybe even today.

What kind of ‘camera improvements’ to expect?

Samsung hasn’t yet shared a detailed changelog of the release and we’re still in the process of testing the new Camera app ourselves. But based on our initial impressions, don’t expect a radical boost to the mobile photography experience offered by the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The very term “camera improvements” can mean anything from better ISO performance in low-light conditions to a minuscule stability boost stemming from some fringe app crash getting eliminated. As for the vulnerability fixes at hand, the April 1st security patch level already started reaching a number of recent Galaxy flagships. Including the latest and greatest from Samsung’s mobile division – the Galaxy S21 series.

Foldable smartphones are still a niche category of devices, but that’s changing quite rapidly, based on recent industry data. More importantly, Samsung happens to be at the forefront of this emerging trend, boasting a growth rate that’s getting a bit ridiculous.

Samsung achieves 100% renewable energy in the USA, Europe, China

Samsung decided more than two years ago that it will take extra steps towards a sustainable future and reach a point where it can rely solely on renewable energy in the USA, Europe, and China before the end of 2020. The decision was made in mid-2018, and Samsung has now confirmed that its goals have been met.

According to the company, Samsung has reached 100% reusable energy at its factories located in the USA, Europe, and China. The company had reached 92% reusable energy by the end of 2019, and it managed  to reach 100% last year.

Samsung’s renewable energy efforts continue in other regions

Samsung hasn’t said much about its sustainability plans in other regions so it’s unclear if the company aims to reach 100% reusable energy at every facility it operates. Nevertheless, the company is also continuing to improve its energy footprint in South Korea where it has installed solar panels and geothermal power generators.

Of course, the company is cutting back on waste by rethinking some of its consumer products as well. All of Samsung’s lifestyle TVs come with eco-friendly packaging, and every 2021 TV model that was unveiled earlier this year is accompanied by a solar-powered remote. The company estimates that the solar-powered remotes will cut back on AA battery wastage by around 99 million AA units over the course of seven years.

The rear covers of its monitors and signage solutions are also being constructed using recycled materials, and the company has now confirmed that it wants to expand their usage to other display-based products.

Samsung wants to make home appliances more energy-efficient

Samsung’s been working continuously on reducing the energy consumption of its Galaxy smartphone chargers since 2012, and the company now claims that it aims to reduce the standby power consumption of its chargers to zero.

Meanwhile, the company is applying a similar tactic to its home appliances, and a couple of its dishwashers have already received the Energy Star rating in the USA thanks to their low energy and water consumption levels.

The company claims that it will continue to monitor the ongoing climate change situation while aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable energies.

Galaxy Note 10 series now getting April 2021 security update

Select variants of the Galaxy Note 10Galaxy Note 10+, and the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G have already started receiving the April 2021 Android security update. More specifically, the over-the-air package was spotted in Germany earlier today. While it has yet to expand to more countries, expect that to happen shortly.

The update itself is identified by version number N97xFXXU6FUCD and carries more than just simple vulnerability fixes on board, based on the very name of the package. Stay tuned on what those are, exactly.

This news comes less than two weeks after the 2019 flagships began making the jump to One UI 3.1. They’re pretty early to the security update party this time around as the April 2021 OTA deployment was confirmed only moments ago on the Galaxy S21 series.

What’s new in this month’s update?

Given the timing of this release, we’re still in the dark regarding the actual contents of the April 2021 security update for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. Samsung usually releases detailed security bulletins at the beginning of every new calendar month, so expect more details to follow later this week.

Anyone who’s feeling impatient can try triggering the new update manually by launching the Settings app, scrolling to the Software update section at the bottom, and tapping the Download and install command on the following interface.

Alternatively, our firmware archives already have one set of full system images containing the April 2021 security update available for download. Able and willing owners of all compatible Galaxy Note 10-series devices can flash those manually to their smartphones as of right now, but everyone else is bound to follow them in the coming days.

Samsung could soon launch more mid-range 5G phones in India

Samsung had announced last week that it would soon launch the Galaxy S20 FE 5G in India. However, that’s not the only 5G Galaxy smartphone making its way to the country. Samsung appears to be planning to launch multiple mid-range 5G smartphones in India despite the market lacking any 5G network.

The South Korean smartphone giant could launch the Galaxy A42 5G (SM-A426B/DS), Galaxy M42 5G (SM-M426B/DS), and the Galaxy M62 5G in India. While the Galaxy M62 5G appeared in BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) listings last week, the Galaxy A42 5G and the Galaxy M42 5G have now been listed in the BIS certification database. Moreover, a dedicated support webpage for the Galaxy M42 5G has also been listed on Samsung India’s website. This could mean that the two smartphones may soon launch in India.

The Galaxy A42 5G is already available in various markets worldwide. However, the Galaxy M42 5G hasn’t been officially unveiled by Samsung yet. It could share a lot of its specifications and features with the Galaxy A42 5G, though. It features a bigger, 6,000mAh battery, a 64MP quad-camera setup, and 128GB internal storage. It is still unclear if the Galaxy M42 5G will use the same processor as that of the Galaxy A42 5G.

The Galaxy M62 5G is said to be a variant of the Galaxy A52 5G with a bigger battery. It could feature a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone could also have a Snapdragon 750G processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 64MP OIS quad-camera setup, a 32MP selfie camera, a 6,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging, and a USB Type-C port.

Galaxy S21 gets big update with camera improvements, April security patch

The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra are among the world’s best smartphone cameras. However, Samsung is still consistently improving the camera quality and adding more features to the Galaxy S21 series. Earlier today, the company rolled out a major new software update to the Galaxy S21 to improve its camera.

Samsung has started rolling out a new software update to the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in India. The new software, which bears firmware version G99xxXXU2AUC8, has a download size of over 1GB. Hence, we recommend using a Wi-Fi network to download the update. The new software brings camera and performance improvements along with the April 2021 security patch.

The company had earlier restricted the Portrait mode on the Galaxy S21 series to use either the telephoto camera or the ultrawide camera. With the new update, the smartphone can now use the regular camera to capture portraits. There might be other camera performance improvements, but we haven’t noticed anything too different yet.

If you are a Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, or a Galaxy S21 Ultra user, you might have already received a notification for the new update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install on your smartphone. If you notice any improvement or a new camera feature after updating your phone, let us know in the comments section below.

This is the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, features modest specs to match its name

It was revealed last month that Samsung has plans to launch ‘Lite’ versions of the popular Galaxy Tab A7 and the Galaxy Tab S7. Some specifications of the two tablets had been leaked as well. Now, the first press render of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite has surfaced along with its features and specifications.

A clear image of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite was posted by reliable leakster Evan Blass (also known as @evleaks) on Voice. It looks like a pretty basic tablet with a single camera and a metal frame. According to the leaked information, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite sports an 8.4-inch IPS LCD screen, a MediaTek Helio P22T processor, 3GB RAM, and a 5,100mAh battery. It features 15W fast charging and a USB Type-C port.

The tablet had also received the necessary certification from the Bluetooth SIG, revealing that it features Bluetooth 5.0. It could also feature stereo speakers and may make it to the market sometime in June alongside the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite. The Galaxy Tab S7 Lite features a 12.4-inch IPS LCD screen, the Snapdragon 750G processor, and 4GB RAM. It could come in a variant with 5G connectivity as well.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, sales of tablets have spiked as people have been working from home and students have been learning remotely. Hence, Samsung has been planning to launch even more tablets to cash in on the opportunity.
