Samsung’s first smartphones with front-facing LED flash, Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, now official

Samsung has announced its first smartphones with a front-facing LED flash; the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7. Specifications of these devices were previously leaked through TENAA, and their UI was revealed through Samsung’s own manuals. Now, they have been officially announced in China, where they would be available starting this week, but there’s no clarity about their international launch.

All the mid-range and high-end smartphones from the company released recently have started featuring high-resolution front-facing cameras, and similar is the case with the Galaxy J7 and the Galaxy J5. To complement their 5-megapixel wide-engle front-facing cameras, they are equipped with a front-facing single-LED flash. Other features include a 13-megapixel primary camera with an aperture of f/1.9, 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, dual-SIM card slot, and LTE connectivity. Both these smartphones run Android 5.1 Lollipop with a new UI that is similar to that of the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge.

The Galaxy J7 is equipped with a 5.5-inch HD display, a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, a 3,000 mAh battery, and is priced at  1,798 CNY (~ $289). The Galaxy J5 features a slightly smaller 5-inch HD display, a 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, a 2,600 mAh battery, and is priced at 1,398 CNY (~ $225). Both of them will be available in China in three colors; gold, white, and black.

These devices target youth audience and compete with the likes of the HTC Desire EYE, Sony Xperia C4, and the Asus ZenFone Selfie, all of which have high-resolution front-facing cameras with an LED flash. Will you be interested in buying a smartphone that has a front-facing LED flash?

Galaxy S6 Active not fazed by AT&T’s ‘life simulator’

Soon after Samsung released the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge we came to know that the company was working on an “Active” variant of this handset, which wasn’t surprising since Samsung tends to release Active variants of its Galaxy S smartphones any way. A few weeks ago it was formally launched and as expected, the Galaxy S6 Active is an AT&T exclusive in the United States.

The handset has got more or less the same specifications as the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge save for the fact that it has a 3,500mAh battery and touts IP68 certification which promises water and dust resistance. Since AT&T is the only carrier on the planet right now that’s selling this handset so it’s obviously putting resources into promoting it. The carrier has released a new promo which shows the Galaxy S6 Active going through a “life simulator,” it’s a contraption that puts the device through several real life scenarios such as a fall down the stairs, a drop in the water, getting sprayed with ketchup and there’s even an ice cream cone in there for good measure. Obviously the Galaxy S6 Active is able to stand all of that without breaking the sweat, in fact it can withstand much more than that, and if that’s what attracts you then you may proceed to your local AT&T outlet and pick one up.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset issues persist, Samsung becomes the visionary

Smartphones are often considered to be a reflection of the manufacturer who makes them, with some saying that “a smartphone is no smarter than its maker.” That may just indeed be true in Samsung’s case. The Korean manufacturer decided not to go with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 810 processor due to overheating issues, and new evidence this week seems to vindicate the company who was rumored to go with its own Exynos simply “to make more money.”

Revisiting Qualcomm’s statement on the 810

It wouldn’t be a proper day at SamMobile if we didn’t restate the facts. We’ve already covered LG’s claim about the initial batch of 810 processors overheating, and the company’s decision to go with the 808 processor instead of the 810 in the G4 (despite the use of the 810 in the G Flex 2), as well as HTC’s own thermal issues with its latest One M9 smartphone. We’ve also discussed Qualcomm’s claim that the overheating issue in the 810 is nothing more than a “rumor” that someone decided to take and run with in order to create news. We just want to put Qualcomm’s claim in your mind before you see the new details we’re about to uncover.

Well, the question before us today is, “Who’s telling the truth? Qualcomm or Android manufacturers? Was Samsung right to go with the Exynos 7420 in the S6 and S6 edge? We hope you’re sitting down, ‘cause the new evidence isn’t pretty (at least for Qualcomm, that is).

Sony admits the Snapdragon 810 overheats, customers complain

Sony has confirmed that the Snapdragon 810 overheats, according to blog GSMinfo. The smartphone given the claim? The Xperia Z3+. While Sony says there’s no cause for concern, the Japanese manufacturer also said that one could feel the heat “through the glass on the back,” particularly when one opens applications. The company says that “an update should appear to address the issue,” implying that it seems to be the only issue with the handset at this time.

To make matters worse, Sony Xperia Z4 users took to Twitter to voice their grievances with the overheating problems of the Z4. So, contrary to what Qualcomm says, real users are having overheating issues with the device – and no, it’s not just in their heads. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has now joined in the complaint, with the carrier warning users to let their handsets rest every so often during the day, and to immediately shut them down as soon as the overheating begins.

Another surprise: the Xperia Z3+ and Z4 had revised Snapdragon 810 chipsets

It’s bad enough to have the Snapdragon 810 behaving in this manner, but even worse? The new Snapdragon chipsets in both devices were revised chipsets of the controversial Snapdragon 810. Even with the revision, Qualcomm’s chipset still overheated!

Sony announces the Xperia Z4v at E3 2015 – with the Snapdragon 810 processor inside

With all the new Sony information we’ve provided, you’d think that would stop the Z4v from coming to market, right?

Sony took to the stage at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (known affectionately by gamers as E3) this week and announced the new Xperia Z4v that’s headed to the US as a carrier exclusive with Verizon Wireless. The device has some new specs, with a Quad HD display instead of the 1080p from the Z3v, a 5MP front camera over the 2.2MP front camera in the Z3v, and others, but the biggest surprise of all is that – (drumroll, please) – the Snapdragon 810 processor is inside!

Why would Sony do such a thing?

Well, Sony’s started issuing an update to the Z3+ and Z4, though we don’t have a changelog to verify if the new update contains “thermal improvements” as did HTC’s One M9 update. So, it could be the case that the Z4v will have a nice, new update when users pick it up for the first time.

Another one catches on fire: the HTC J Butterfly now reporting overheating issues with the Snapdragon 810

HTC’s One M9 has already been in the spotlight with its latest device coming in at 30 degrees hotter than the One M8 some weeks ago. The latest with HTC is that its J Butterfly is also experiencing the same.

It appears time for HTC to reissue that thermal improvements update for the J Butterfly.

Conclusion

That’s what we have for now, folks. Qualcomm claimed that the overheating issues with the 810 was nothing but a juicy rumor, but do these claims weeks after Qualcomm’s statement sound like mere rumor to you? We think not.

Many have praised Samsung for its cutting-edge tech in its devices year after year, but it takes more than great spec-stuffing to make a great company. Samsung’s greatest asset this year may be, above its stunning devices, the company’s wisdom to forgo the Snapdragon 810 and implement its own Exynos 7420 chipset and other octa-core CPUs into its devices. Of course, Samsung is still relying on ARM for its Mali GPUs (and has signed a five-year deal through 2020), but Samsung may break that agreement, too, if the need arises.

Sony, HTC, and LG are all unfortunate players in the Android world. At the end of the day, these three Android manufacturers are predominantly reliant upon Qualcomm because they don’t make their own processors or have processors that aren’t ready for primetime (LG’s Nuclun octa-core, for example). Samsung, on the other hand, has an up-and-coming semiconductor business that could just disrupt the industry in 2015. The Snapdragon 810 fiasco is just that – a “fiasco.”

If Qualcomm’s claim that the 810 rumor is just a rumor is true, then Sony, HTC, and LG have all hopped aboard the bandwagon or are getting paid under the table to go along. In this case, however, we tend to side with these three manufacturers who could very well lose sales and overall profit because Qualcomm’s 810 processor is the “hottest” thing, literally, to come from the company in a long time.

Samsung releases app to fix missing quick settings issue on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge users can now get their mobile data, mobile hotspot, and private hotspot toggles back on their phones thanks to an app that Samsung has released on the Galaxy Apps store. Called QuickPanel restore, the app serves to only add those toggles back to the quick settings list – in fact, once you hit that Restore button, you are provided with a popup to uninstall the app right there and then, which is a nice touch.

Samsung still hasn’t said why the toggles went missing in the first place, but those with affected devices now have an official fix. Head into the Galaxy Apps store on your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge and search for QuickRestore Panel to download the app (or click this link on your phone) and get rid of the annoying bug.

Samsung starts working on Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have been updated to Android 5.1.1 by only a single carrier in the US, but Samsung has at least gotten the show running as far as the latest version of the OS is concerned. Now, we’ve been told by our insiders that Samsung has started working on an important update for the Galaxy S5, and we are hazarding the guess that this update will be based on Android 5.1.1.

Since the company has only just started development, it’s possible the official rollout will take a few weeks. It would be disappointing if users have to wait past the second quarter of the year, though with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge still on 5.0 in almost every region, it wouldn’t be surprising if the 5.1.1 update for the S5 takes a couple of months to roll out. We can only hope the update will be worth the wait and maybe include some of the features of the S6, though we will probably be left hanging considering how Samsung’s update policy is a complete mess.

We should also point out that Samsung is testing Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy Note 4 as well. We have no information on a time frame for the update’s completion, but you can expect to be waiting a couple of weeks after the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge make the jump to 5.1.1 around the world.

My Google accounts got deleted from my Galaxy S6 edge on their own

The notification toggles going missing of their own accord was quite an irritating issue as it is, and I ran into another oddity on my Galaxy S6 edge this morning. As I cleared away all my overnight notifications from the status bar, one notification stood out to me – the phone was asking me to select a Backup account. For those unaware, this happens when you haven’t set a Google account for backing up your device data, and since I had three Google accounts logged in, I was surprised that the phone was asking me to select a backup account all of a sudden.

A trip into the Accounts menu in the settings revealed that the phone had deleted all my Google accounts, and I don’t remember doing anything out of the ordinary before I went to sleep. Well, I did update to the newest version of Google Sheets from the Play Store, but I’m not sure that had something to do with the accounts getting removed, unless the update somehow affected the Google Play Services framework, which could be one reason for what has happened.

It could also be a bug in Samsung’s software, possibly introduced in the last software update that was rolled out out to the Galaxy S6 edge (and the Galaxy S6.) Thankfully, adding those accounts again worked just fine, but I’m left to wonder what could have caused the deletion of those accounts, especially since it’s a bug I haven’t seen before on any device in four years of using Android.

Have you faced the same issue on your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge? Let us know in the comments!
