Samsung inaugurates the sixth Samsung Innovation Lab in India

Samsung has inaugurated the sixth Samsung Innovation Lab in India today under its Digital Academy initiative. The new lab is set up in IIT-Guwahati and focuses on training students on Internet of Things (IoT), Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to help them acquire industry-relevant skills.

Samsung aims to train over 300 students at IIT-Guwahati in the next three years on these cutting-edge technologies. The training will include classroom lectures, assignments, lab sessions, mini-projects, etc. over a period of 14 weeks.

“At Samsung, our aim is to foster a culture of innovation amongst the students and provide them with the best possible infrastructure. We are confident that Samsung Innovation Lab, which is part of our citizenship initiatives, will help students leverage the growing digital technologies market and develop their talent,” said Peter Rhee, Corporate Vice President of Samsung India.

The Korean tech giant already has Samsung Innovation Labs in IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Kharagpur, and IIT-Roorkee, carrying out collaborative research and training programs. Samsung Digital Academy, the company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative that aims to train students on next-generation technologies, has plans to set up more Samsung Innovation Labs in the near future.

2020 might be a decisive year for Samsung’s 5G network business

Samsung was the second-largest 5G network equipment in Q3 2019 following Huawei. Analysts cited by Yonhap News Agency believe that the South Korean tech giant has an opportunity to greatly increase its presence in the 5G space next year, as more telecommunication service providers prepare to make major investments in their infrastructure.

According to the online publication citing IHS Markit, Samsung had managed to control 11% of the global 5G market this year, up from 5% in 2018. The company is now expected to boost its 5G market share at over 20% next year, as service providers brace themselves to welcome aboard an additional ~70 million 5G subscribers in 2020.

The threat of Huawei is still looming

The recent report reiterates the fact that Samsung is very likely to improve its presence in the 5G segment partly because of the US-China trade war, which has reduced Huawei’s potential clientele for 5G network equipment.

However, it was only last week when market watchers were suspecting that Samsung could very well lose ground to Huawei in the 5G race over the next few years, as the Chinese tech giant’s 5G solutions are priced more competitively and can even be technically superior. It may be that Samsung will manage to boost its 5G influence next year before its upward trajectory will flatten out in consequent years.

With all said and done, it sounds a bit like the top spot in the global 5G network equipment market will be contested by both Samsung and Huawei, and only time will tell which one of the two tech giants will come out on top. Samsung is bound to increase its market share next year, but its success also appears to be directly influenced by Huawei’s hurdles.

Thankfully for Samsung, the company already has a strong foothold in the 5G market in Japan, South Korea, and the US where it provides 5G network equipment to AT&T and Sprint. As service providers in these countries expand upon their infrastructure, Samsung’s market share will surely improve, perhaps even to the point where it will overtake Huawei.

Samsung releases fifth Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy Note 10/10+

Samsung has released a new Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy Note 10/10+ users in India. This is the fifth beta update overall and comes just five days after the company released the previous update. Given how quickly Samsung is pushing out new beta updates for the Note 10, the rollout of the stable version may not be that far. There was a similar uptick in updates towards the end of the Android 10 beta program for the Galaxy S10.

The new Note 10 update, which carries the version number N975FXXU1ZSL7 and weighs just 146 MB, is all about bug fixes, as one would expect towards the fag end of a beta program. As per Samsung’s official communication, the Galaxy Note 10 lineup is scheduled to get the stable version of Android 10 with One UI 2.0 in January next year. However, as we have seen with the Galaxy S10 rollout, the update may arrive earlier than that since the company tends to be conservative in its estimates.

If you were on the fence about joining the beta program, now might be a good time to enroll and get the update before others. Samsung has already fixed most of the bugs, making the latest Android 10 build more than qualified to be a daily driver. Interested Note 10 customers can enroll in the One UI 2.0 beta program (if the registrations are still open in your region) in the Samsung members app. If you are already a beta tester, you can go to Settings » Software update » Download and install to get the latest release.

Exclusive: Samsung to put all augmented reality features in new ‘AR Zone’

Samsung offers a wide variety of augmented reality-based features. It introduced a bunch of new ones with the Galaxy Note 10 earlier this year. Some of those features were later released for the Galaxy S10 as well.

Since most of these features are scattered in different places of the UI, Samsung has decided to create a new “AR Zone.” It would simply be a one-stop-shop for all of its augmented reality features, allowing users to see and access the entire collection from one location.

AR Zone will be added to the Camera Modes screen

Take the Quick Measure feature, for example. It uses the ToF sensor on select Samsung devices to calculate the length, area or depth of an object in real-time. It exists in the folder with all of Samsung’s preloaded apps. The AR Doodle feature, which lets you enhance your videos with augmented reality drawings and messages, is placed in the Air command menu on the Galaxy Note 10.

Other features like the AR Emoji Camera, My Emoji Studio and Live sticker are part of the AR Emoji function while Bixby Vision includes features like 3D Scanner, Make up and Home décor. With all of these features being scattered in different places, it can often be tough for users to find them. So they often don’t even have full knowledge of their device’s AR capabilities.

Our sources tell us that Samsung has created a new AR Zone where all of its augmented reality features will be listed. It’s going to be accessible from the Camera Modes screen, so it should be available in the Camera app alongside the other modes like Photo, Video, Live focus and Live focus video.

This is certainly going to make it much easier to find all AR features. We haven’t seen this being tested out with the One UI 2.0 beta. Chances are this is something that Samsung will introduce with the Galaxy S11.

Samsung may sell the Snapdragon 865 Galaxy S11 in more markets

There has always been a debate about the performance difference between Samsung’s Exynos process and its equivalent Qualcomm chip. Samsung has historically used both for different variants of its flagships. Most markets got the Exynos-based flagship while a few got the one with Qualcomm’s processor.

In what might be considered as an abject admission, a new report from South Korea suggests that Samsung is going to sell the Snapdragon-based variant of its next flagship in more markets than ever before. The Snapdragon 865 Galaxy S11 would thus be available to more customers.

Snapdragon 865 Galaxy S11 may be sold in more markets globally

Snapdragon variants have largely been limited to the United States, China, Japan and Latin America. South Korea, Europe and the rest of the world got the Exynos-based variants. That may change with the Galaxy S11.

The Snapdragon 865’s competitor from Samsung is called the Exynos 990. A report from South Korea claims that the “inevitable” decision to offer the Snapdragon variant more widely was made after realizing that the prevailing performance gap between the two hadn’t been closed. It goes on to mention that most regional models of the Galaxy S11 will feature the Snapdragon 865, with the exception of Europe, which will get the Exynos 990.

Citing unnamed officials, the report says that the performance gap between the Snapdragon 865 and the Exynos 990 is “quite large.” That’s also what the specs of both chips suggest on paper. As we pointed out in our Exynos 990 vs Snapdragon 865 comparison, Qualcomm’s chip is using more recent ARM cores once again. Qualcomm is using ARM Cortex-A77 as the high performance core while Samsung opted for two M5 custom cores and two older ARM Cortex-A76 cores.

Numbers alone can only tell us so much about the actual performance. There is a historical precedent to go on, though. The Snapdragon chips have maintained an upper hand over their Exynos rivals in several areas, particularly thermal management and battery efficiency. This may finally have compelled Samsung to make the switch. This would also make sense in light of recent reports that Samsung had laid off the entire CPU dev team at its R&D Center in Austin. Exynos chips may not feature Samsung’s custom Mongoose cores in the future.

None of this has been officially confirmed at the moment so take it with some skepticism. It’s also unclear if regions like South Asia and the Middle East will also get the Qualcomm variant. In any case, it would be best to first put the Exynos 990 through its paces before passing judgment on its inferiority compared to the Snapdragon 865.

US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 get One UI 2.0 Android 10 beta

It has been a couple of weeks since the One UI 2.0 Android 10 beta was released for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung has already made the beta available in several markets across the globe. It was going to take some time before the beta arrived for US unlocked variants of these devices.

The wait is now over for those who were waiting for the beta. Samsung has released the One UI 2.0 Android 10 beta for the US unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. It’s rolling out now so those who are interested can now register for the beta through the Samsung Members app.

Unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 get Android 10 beta in the US

The US unlocked beta for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ comes with firmware version G96*U1UEU7ZSL3 and the December 2019 security patch. It follows the second Android 10 beta firmware that Samsung rolled out for these devices elsewhere just yesterday. That release fixed issues like slowdowns due to memory leaks, slow hotspot speeds, device reboots while playing Clash Royale and more.

The unlocked Galaxy Note 9 is also receiving the One UI 2.0 Android 10 beta in the United States. Firmware version N960U1UEU3ZSL2 weighs in at just under 2GB with the December security patch included. Our One UI 2.0 feature focus series explains in great detail everything that’s new with this major software update.

Samsung is steaming ahead with the beta releases for these devices. That’s a good indication of the process going smoothly. The company will ideally be able to release the stable versions of these updates over the next few weeks. It has already been rolling out the stable Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10. The Galaxy Note 10 will be next before last year’s flagships get the update.
