Samsung Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 now on sale in India

Samsung’s new Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 smartphones are now available for purchase in India. Officially announced on January 28th, the Galaxy M10 and M20 are amazingly well priced budget phones from the Korean giant that will take on the competition from Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi in the Indian market. Both phones are exclusive to Amazon and Samsung’s official online store, which is partly the reason why Samsung has been able to price them so aggressively.

The M10 and M20 get a common rear camera setup with a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP ultra-wide camera. For selfies, there’s an 8MP camera on the M20 and a 5MP camera on the M10. The M10 and M20 feature 6.2-inch and 6.3-inch Infinity-V displays (Samsung’s brand name for displays with a waterdrop notch) and are powered by the Exynos 7870 and Exynos 7904 chipsets respectively. The Galaxy M20 comes with a gargantuan 5,000 mAh battery with fast charging support while the M10 gets a 3,400 mAh battery but no fast charging. Both phones run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and are slated to receive Android Pie in August this year.

The Galaxy M10 is priced at ₹7,990 for the 2GB+16GB configuration and ₹8,990 for the 3GB+32GB variant. The Galaxy M20 costs ₹10,990 for the 3GB+32GB variant and ₹12,990 for the 4GB+64GB model. Samsung has a few launch day offers for the two devices, including additional mobile data and zero-cost EMI plans. Color options for both include Charcoal Black and Ocean Blue.

You can buy the phones on Amazon at the links below and at Samsung’s store here; you might want to hurry, as it seems stocks are in limited supply. If you’re looking at the Galaxy M20, don’t forget to check out review of the phone. Spoiler alert: We like it a lot, and it’s a great deal for the asking price.

Live photo reveals Galaxy S10 in Pearl White, shows triple real camera!

A live picture of the Pearl White Galaxy S10 has been leaked online, giving us our closest look yet at Samsung’s upcoming flagship. The picture shows the back of the phone, with the triple-camera setup and a part of the Samsung logo visible. Of course, the most interesting part here is that white paint job. It’s got a bit of a shine and seems to have some greenish hues, matching what we saw in leaked official renders of all three Galaxy S10 models recently.

Of course, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is conspicuous by its absence, offering more confirmation that the S10 will have the fingerprint sensor under the display for those who still aren’t convinced. That’s pretty much it for what we can glean from this picture, although we can expect to see more such leaks in the coming days. After all, the most damaging leaks often come out just a few days before a Galaxy flagship is set to go official, and we should expect it to be no different this time around.

What are your thoughts based on the leaked image? Would you like to pick up the Galaxy S10 in white going by what you’re seeing here, or do you think Samsung should just have gone with the traditional white we have seen on its previous flagships?

Galaxy M20 gets a second software update ahead of market release

Samsung’s betting big on the new Galaxy M series, with the Galaxy M20 the company’s most value-for-money budget smartphone ever. The M20 has received generally positive critical reception, including here at SamMobile; we found it to be a masterstroke in terms of how well it’s priced and what it offers for that price. And Samsung seems to be taking software updates for the device very seriously, as a second Galaxy M20 software update is now rolling out in India a day before it’s set to go on sale.

Like the first software update, the second one doesn’t tell us what’s new or different. It’s got a generic changelog and even the security patch remains unchanged, but we’re hoping it has some under-the-hood improvements, especially for performance. The Galaxy M20 can run popular games like PUBG without breaking a sweat (at the default graphics settings, at least), but general navigation through the interface can produce some stutters and lag that you don’t expect from the Exynos 7904 chip powering the device (remember, this is a chip similar to the Exynos 7885, with just a lower clock speed for its two high-performance processor cores).

The new update is a 68 MB download and comes with software version M205FDDU1ASAF. If you buy the Galaxy M20, both software updates should be available over the air right out of the box.

Samsung China pulls the plug on its collaboration with off-brand Supreme

Samsung China took everyone by surprise when it announced a collaboration with Supreme during the Galaxy A8s launch in China two months ago. They stared in disbelief as two men introduced as CEOs of Supreme were invited on stage. That’s when it became evident that this wasn’t the “real” Supreme, so to speak, but the off-brand Supreme Italia.

Supreme Italia has the same logo as the New York-based Supreme and even sells similar products. It was able to use the name because Supreme never registered its brand name in markets like Italy and Spain. This allowed the Barletta, Italy-based company to register the trademark under its own name and carry out business legally in the country.

Samsung China ends partnership with Supreme Italia

This partnership would have seen Supreme Italia launch retail stores in China while also working with Samsung on exclusive products. That’s not going to happen anymore. Samsung China has confirmed in a post on Weibo that it’s discontinuing the partnership with this company.

The Samsung x Supreme collaboration was denounced by Supreme NYC as well. The company said it wasn’t opening a store in Beijing or working with Samsung on products. It added that these claims were being spread by a “counterfeit organization.”

“Samsung Electronics had previously mentioned a collaboration with Supreme Italia at the Galaxy A8s China launch event on December 10th, Samsung Electronics has now decided to terminate this collaboration,” the translated statement reads.

The company received a lot of criticism from hypebeasts not just in China but elsewhere as well. It has to be said that the optics of a company of Samsung’s stature collaborating with an off-brand label aren’t that great. Samsung China had said that it was re-evaluating this partnership and has now decided to end it.

Galaxy S10’s reverse wireless charging sounds like a ‘me too’ feature

Remember that time Samsung introduced fast wireless charging to its phones back in 2015? At the time, Samsung was one of the few manufacturers taking wireless charging seriously, and every Galaxy flagship since the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 has had fast wireless charging support. And, with the Galaxy S10, Samsung is set to introduce reverse wireless charging, but while fast wireless charging was useful and better than what others were offering, the company seems to be bringing reverse wireless charging just so it can show consumers the Galaxy S10 can match Huawei’s latest phones when it comes to the list of bonus features.

Huawei is perhaps Samsung’s biggest upcoming competitor, so I can understand the Korean giant trying to make sure its next flagship offers similar features as the latest Huawei flagship. But I can’t help but feel that Samsung could instead have focused resources on, say, faster wired charging. The latest info suggests the Galaxy S10 will have the usual Quick Charge 2.0-equivalent fast charging technology, while Chinese OEMs have marched forward with newer fast charging specifications, some of them custom-made to charge a device from 0 to 50 percent in an impressively short amount of time.

In fact, Huawei claims that its Mate 20 Pro can go from 0 to 70 percent charge in just 30 minutes. But that’s not what Samsung is looking to match with the Galaxy S10 based on the info we have right now. Instead, we’ll get the ability to charge other phones wirelessly using the Galaxy S10. How useful will that be? Well, it could come in handy for that friend of yours who has a flagship phone with wireless charging support and is dire need of a charge, but it’s probably not going to be useful enough considering the Galaxy S10 won’t have giant batteries on any but the Plus model (and, frankly, 4,000 mAh isn’t that huge, either).

The one proper use case I can think of is charging your smartwatch, but that would be bonus functionality since there aren’t going to be many occasions where you simply have to get your smartwatch running. I’m still hoping we do get faster wired charging. Remember, even if the charging speeds don’t increase, newer implementations are also better with heat and power efficiency. Samsung hasn’t upgraded its fast charging tech in the last five years, and to think the tenth anniversary Galaxy S flagship will give us reverse wireless charging instead of faster wired charging is going to be quite disappointing to me and no doubt to many others as well.

What do you think? Is reverse wireless charging a feature you’d like on your phone?

Samsung cuts Galaxy S9+ prices in India

Samsung has scheduled an Unpacked event on February 20 to launch the Galaxy S10 lineup. As the company prepares to launch its latest flagship smartphones, it has decided to officially slash the prices of the Galaxy S9+ variants to make way for the new offerings. The announced price cuts do seem substantial and can attract buyers who have been waiting for a good deal on this powerful device.

The Galaxy S9+ which was launched at a starting price of INR 64,990 (~$900) is now available for INR 57,900 after a price cut of INR 8,000. The 128GB storage variant is now sold for INR 61,900, down INR 7,000 from the INR 68,990 launch price. The official price of the 256GB variant, on the other hand, is slashed by INR 8,000 from INR 72,990 to INR 65,900. Since retailers tend to offer discounts and exchange offers on official prices, the actual amount that customers need to pay to own one of these capable devices might be even low.

It is common for companies to slash the prices of their last year flagship devices as they launch new models. Given that smartphone innovation has mostly plateaued and the Galaxy S10 series may not be a major upgrade from the Galaxy S9 lineup, it remains to be seen if these price cuts will cannibalize the Galaxy S10 sales.

Sprint Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update rolling out now

With AT&T following through just three days ago, the Sprint Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update is now rolling out. Multiple users have reported receiving the OTA update notification on their handsets. They will now be able to get the full One UI experience on their carrier-locked Galaxy Note 9.

US carriers have started releasing Android Pie for Samsung’s flagships over the past week. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint have all released it for the Galaxy S9/S9+. AT&T was the first to release it for the Note 9 and Sprint is the second.

Sprint Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update is out

Sprint is rolling out firmware version N960USQU1CSAA for the Galaxy Note 9 on its network. It comes with the January 2019 security patch. The update weighs under 1.9GB for those upgrading from Oreo. The download will be lighter for those who are already on the Pie beta.

Samsung’s latest custom skin for Android is the highlight of this update. Our One UI video demo highlights all of the cosmetic changes included in this update. All of the Android 9.0 Pie features are present in the update as well.

Those who are using an unlocked Galaxy Note 9 on Sprint will have to wait a bit longer. No unlocked Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9 unit has received Pie in the United States so far. Given the track record that Samsung has with updates for unlocked models in the US, these customers will need to remain patient for the foreseeable future.

With the Sprint Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update rolling out now, it’s not going to be long before other carriers follow suit. We’ll be sure to let you know when that happens.

Galaxy Sport design highlighted in latest leaked render

We exclusively revealed last year that Samsung was working on the Gear Sport’s successor and that it may be called the Galaxy Sport. A new render has been leaked online today which highlights the Galaxy Sport design.

Samsung brought its smartwatches under the Galaxy umbrella with the Galaxy Watch. It used to launch them under the Gear brand previously. The same treatment may also be on the cards for its next pair of wireless earbuds. They are likely to be called the Galaxy Buds.

Leaked render highlights the Galaxy Sport design

This leaked render of the Galaxy Sport is not that different from the ones we saw a month ago. We don’t see a fluted or toothed bezel. The Galaxy Sport will feature a smooth bezel but that’s not going to prevent it from having a rotating bezel. That design element has been a hallmark of Samsung smartwatches for a few years now.

The dial itself appears to have a brushed metal finish which extends to the buckle. It looks quite understated yet modern and certainly different from what we’ve seen Samsung do in the past. The render doesn’t reveal much more aside from the Galaxy Sport design. There’s little information about the internal specs of this device.

What we do know is that it has been certified by the FCC already with model number SM-R500. You may recall that the Gear Sport was the SM-R600. It’s possible that Samsung has gone back on the model number since it’s changing the moniker. It’s pertinent to mention here that Samsung followed tradition for the Galaxy Watch when that branding was changing. Galaxy Watch has model number SM-R8xx compared to the Gear S3’s SM-R7XX.

It will feature 4GB of internal storage and run on Tizen. It will have several fitness features as the device is meant for those who lead an active lifestyle. This makes LTE connectivity a distant dream for the Galaxy Sport, but one can hope Samsung might have a surprise on this front. Samsung has not yet hinted when we can expect this device to arrive. It remains to be seen whether the Galaxy Sport will be unveiled on February 20 with the Galaxy S10 or at MWC 2019 the following week.
