Galaxy M11 sees a price drop in India

Samsung is slowly releasing its 2021 Galaxy A and Galaxy M smartphones worldwide. It launched the Galaxy A02 and the Galaxy M02 a few days ago, and it will likely launch the Galaxy A12 for the Indian market today. As a result, the company has been reducing the price of Galaxy A and Galaxy M series phones launched last year.

The South Korean smartphone giant has dropped the price of the Galaxy M11 in India. According to a new report, the Galaxy M11 now costs INR 10,999 (around $150), which is a price drop of INR 1,000. The phone was launched in India nine months ago, and the 64GB version of the device was priced at INR 12,999. The company had dropped the Galaxy M11’s price in India once last year.

The Galaxy M11 features a 6.4-inch PLS IPS LCD Infinity-V display with HD+ resolution. It runs Android 10 with One UI 2.x, and comes equipped with the Snapdragon 450 processor, 3GB/4GB RAM, and 32GB/64GB internal storage. It has a microSD card slot as well. At the front, it has an 8MP selfie camera. At the rear, it sports a 13MP+5MP+2MP triple-camera setup.

Connectivity features include GPS, dual-SIM card slot, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It has a fingerprint reader at the rear, and a 5,000mAh battery powers it. The Galaxy M11 supports 15W fast charging and has a plastic body.

Here’s how much Galaxy A12 could cost in India

The Galaxy A12 was officially unveiled three months ago, and the phone has made it to a few markets since then. It was revealed a few days ago that the Galaxy A12 could be launched in India later this week. Ahead of the official announcement from Samsung India, the pricing of the upcoming smartphone has been leaked.

According to a new report from 91Mobiles, the Galaxy A12 will be available in two storage variants—64GB and 128GB—in India. The 64GB variant will reportedly cost INR 12,999 (around $179) in India, while the 128GB variant could be priced at INR 13,999 (around $193). If this information is correct, it makes sense to pay INR 1,000 more and go for the 128GB version of the Galaxy A12. It is also being reported that the phone might be launched later today.

The Galaxy A12 sports a 6.5-inch PLS IPS LCD Infinity-V display with HD+ resolution. The phone runs Android 10 with One UI 2 and comes equipped with the MediaTek Helio P35 12nm processor. It has 4GB RAM, 64GB/128GB eMMC 5.1 internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It has an 8MP selfie camera and a 48MP+5MP+2MP+2MP quad rear-facing camera setup. It can record 1080p videos using front and rear cameras.

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy A12 with a side-mounted fingerprint reader, a dual-SIM card slot, GPS, LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery and can be fast-charged using a bundled 15W charger. It will be available in four colors: black, blue, red, and white.

Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets with high refresh rate displays

Smartphones with high refresh rate screens offer a relatively smoother and more fluidic experience while navigating around the UI, scrolling, swiping, zooming, and gaming. Samsung was late to the party when it comes to releasing devices with high refresh rate displays, but the company now has among the widest range of such phones and tablets. While most of the brands started off with 90Hz screens, Samsung jumped straight to 120Hz refresh rate screens.

Now that there are a lot of Galaxy devices (11, as of February 2021) that have high refresh rate screens, we thought it might be a good idea to create a list of all those devices. We will regularly update this list as and when Samsung releases new devices with high refresh rate displays.

Which Galaxy phones and tablets have high refresh rate displays?

  • Galaxy S21: The smallest Galaxy S21 series phone has a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with Full HD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) and a variable 120Hz refresh rate (48Hz-120Hz). The phone also features up to 1,300 nits of peak brightness, HDR10+, Always-On Display, and a second-generation ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader from Qualcomm. The Galaxy S21’s screen is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.
  • Galaxy S21+: The middle child in the Galaxy S21 series sports a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with Full HD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) and a variable high-refresh-rate display (48Hz-120Hz). The smartphone’s display can go as high as 1,300 nits of peak brightness and features HDR10+, Always-On Display, and Qualcomm’s second-gen ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader. The screen is protected using a Gorilla Glass Victus panel.
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra: The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with QHD+ resolution (3,200 x 1,440 pixels). It is Samsung’s first smartphone that can run its display at QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate at the same time. It also supports a variable refresh rate feature (10Hz-120Hz) to reduce power consumption when a high refresh rate is not required. It can go as high as 1,500 nits of peak brightness and features HDR10+, Always-On Display, second-gen ultrasonic fingerprint reader, and Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
  • Galaxy S20: This phone has a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with QHD+ resolution (3,200 x 1,440 pixels) and a 120Hz refresh rate. It also features HDR10+, Always-On Display, an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader, and Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Both the LTE and 5G versions of the phone have a 120Hz refresh rate screen.
  • Galaxy S20+: LTE and 5G variants of the Galaxy S20+ sport a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with QHD+ resolution (3,200 x 1,440 pixels) and a high refresh rate of 120Hz. It can playback HDR10+ content and features Gorilla Glass 6 protection over the screen. Features like AoD and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader are also present.
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra: The Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of 1,400 nits, QHD+ resolution, and HDR10+ certification. Similar to other Galaxy S20 series phones, it features an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader, AoD mode, and Gorilla Glass 6 protection.
  • Galaxy S20 FE: This phone is the cheapest Galaxy S20 device, and it comes with a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, and a 120Hz refresh rate. It uses an optical in-display fingerprint reader, AoD mode, HDR10+, and its screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.
  • Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and QHD+ resolution. Its display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. It features an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader, HDR10+ certification, and AoD mode.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2: Samsung’s second-generation Fold device has two screens, a 6.23-inch Super AMOLED display on the outside and a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x foldable display on the inside. The inner display can be folded and it has a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, QXGA+ resolution (2,208 x 1,768 pixels), HDR10+ certification, and Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) protection. The outer display has a 2,260 x 816 pixels resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate.
  • Galaxy Tab S7: The Galaxy Tab S7 uses an 11-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, QHD+ resolution, HDR10+ playback certification, and 500 nits of peak brightness. It comes with an S Pen and a latency of just 26ms.
  • Galaxy Tab S7+: The Galaxy Tab S7+ sports a 12.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution. It comes bundled with an S Pen, which has a latency of just 9ms.

Samsung is also launching three more smartphones with high refresh rate screens next month: Galaxy A52 4G, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72 4G. The Galaxy A52 4G and the Galaxy A72 4G are said to feature 90Hz Super AMOLED displays, while the Galaxy A52 5G could come with a 120Hz Super AMOLED display.

Samsung was biggest tablet brand in Europe, Middle East, and Africa in Q4 2020

Samsung is the only brand in the world that has a compelling Android tablet lineup. No wonder it was the second-biggest tablet brand globally in Q4 2020 and full-year 2020. Now, numbers for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region are out, and Samsung is in the number one position in the tablet segment.

According to the latest data from market research firm IDC, Samsung was the biggest tablet in the EMEA region in Q4 2020 with a 28.1% share of the market. The South Korean firm shipped more than 4 million tablets during the quarter, showcasing a 26.4% year-on-year growth. In Q4 2019, the company had shipped 3.2 million tablets. Apple, which is the top tablet vendor globally, is second in the EMEA region. The Cupertino-based brand shipped 3.5 million iPads and captured a 24.6% share of the market, showcasing a 17.1% year-on-year growth.

Lenovo (18.3%), Huawei (7.7%), and Microsoft (3.2%) were the next best tablet brands in the region and managed to ship around 2.6 million, 1.1 million, and 0.4 million tablets, respectively. Lenovo showcased the most significant growth (152.8%) after its sales tripled compared to Q4 2019. Huawei’s sales dropped by 20.3% compared to Q4 2019.

Samsung had strong growth in the EMEA region due to its presence in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)’s school digitalization projects. The education sector has been boosting tablet sales ever since the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning started. Governments in some countries are offering vouchers to students to subsidize the purchase of remote learning devices such as laptops and tablets. A sudden surge in demand for laptops resulted in a stock shortage, forcing consumers to switch to tablets.

Here’s how much the Galaxy A52 LTE / 5G will reportedly cost in Europe

Hopefully you are ready for another leak pertaining to the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy A52 5G, because it’s here to reveal the phone’s design once again, from all angles, along with a few new bits of information regarding availability in Europe. Namely, the Galaxy A52 LTE will reportedly go on sale in most European countries for around €349, with the Galaxy A52 5G being planned to hit the shelves for €429 give or take depending on taxes and so on.

This nugget of information shared by WinFuture was accompanied by a new gallery of press renders depicting the phone in its four color options, though given the rate at which the Galaxy A52 has leaked so far, its exterior design shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point. Nevertheless, below you will find a handful of renders showcasing the phone’s Infinity-O display and its camera housing.

Galaxy A52 LTE / 5G specifications

Not much new in the way of hardware specs was revealed, but in case you need to catch up with the Galaxy A52, this is as good a place to start as any. The phone will be released in LTE and 5G variants, powered by the Snapdragon 720G and Snapdragon 750G chipsets, respectively.

Memory options will include 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 128GB / 256GB of storage, and users will have the option to expand the storage via a microSD card slot.

More exciting is the fact that the Galaxy A52 will make the jump to a high-refresh-rate display. As exclusively reported by SamMobile last week, the Galaxy A52 will ship with a 90Hz display.

Both the LTE and 5G models will reportedly be powered by 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging, and they’ll benefit from an IP67 dust and water resistance rating.

Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update is out for the Galaxy Fold in the USA

Four weeks have passed since the original Galaxy Fold began its journey into Android 11 territory and the same foldable device — model number SM-F900U1 — is now receiving the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 firmware update in the USA.

Galaxy Fold owners can identify the update by firmware version F900U1UEU4DUA3. The new release can be downloaded by opening the phone’s Settings app, accessing the Software update section at the bottom, and tapping Download and install. SamMobile readers can circumvent this procedure by downloading the latest update from our firmware archive and installing it manually on their phones using a Windows PC.

Included with the update is the February 2021 security patch which is already available for numerous other Galaxy devices, but of course, One UI 3.0 is the most exciting thing about the new release. The fundamentals haven’t changed but the ways in which One UI 3.0 goes about achieving ease of access and user-friendliness are optimized. Many UI elements are easier to reach, read, or both, and the whole UI looks more modern.

This is the second, and second-to-last major Android OS update planned for the Galaxy Fold. The phone was shipped with Android 9, and ten months ago it got updated to Android 10. The phone remains eligible for one additional Android OS release, though at least ten more months will have to pass before an Android 12-based One UI update for the Galaxy Fold will be ready to hit the waves.

Android 11 One UI 3.0 update rolls out for unlocked Galaxy S10 in the USA

Samsung began rolling out the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 firmware update for the Galaxy S10 series in the first week of January. The update debuted in Europe but it’s now finally making its way on the Galaxy S10 series in the USA. It’s rolling out for the unlocked models, though carrier variants should receive the same treatment eventually.

The Android 11 / One UI 3.0 update for the Galaxy S10 series in the USA arrives a little bit later than anticipated, especially now that it’s been a month and a half since the initial rollout took place in Europe. However, as many of you are probably aware, Samsung was forced to pull the initial release due to unspecified issues for about a week before resuming it.

Whatever was wrong with the initial release should have already been fixed, and Galaxy S10 series owners in the USA can now finally join the One UI 3.0 party that began at the beginning of the year. They’ll enjoy a new and reworked user interface with a modernized look all throughout the UI and 1st-party apps, new alerts and notifications, new lock screen features and a whole lot more.

Unlocked Galaxy S10 owners in the USA should be able to download the new firmware update — identified by firmware version G97xU1UEU4FUA4 — by opening Settings on their phones, navigating to Software update and choosing the Download and install option. Alternatively, they can search for and download the firmware from our archive and install it on their phones manually using a PC.

Reminder: Your Galaxy S10 series phone will get the Android 12 update

While getting a new phone can be fun, not everyone likes upgrading their phone every year or two. For those who hold on to their phones for longer, Samsung announced last year that it would be providing all of its flagships and some mid-range phones launched in 2019 and later three major OS updates, changing its long-standing policy of only providing two Android version upgrades to all of its devices.

The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ received the Android 11 update in early January, and owners of these devices have been wondering whether this will be the last major update or if they will be getting Android 12 later this year/early next year. Well, we wanted to remind you that yes, the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ are eligible for the Android 12 update and Samsung’s new software update guarantee.

Galaxy S10 owners are eligible for Android 12 update

That means if the latest software is important to you, you don’t need to upgrade to any of the new Galaxy S21 smartphones, even if there are plenty of other reasons to do so (and also a few not to). Your Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+ are not yet outdated and will live to see another big Android and One UI update, followed by at least a year of monthly security updates.

Naturally, since the Galaxy S10 series phones will be more than two years old by the time Android 12 rolls around, Samsung may take longer to release the update for them and prioritize newer flagships. Furthermore, you will not get all the new features that Samsung will include in the next major One UI release, but let’s face it: The list of new features is getting shorter and shorter every year and it’s mostly the changes in the core Android OS that matter, all of which are likely to be included.

If you own another Galaxy device and are wondering if it’s eligible for three major OS updates, check out this list.

Galaxy Buds Pro update with ANC improvements is rolling out worldwide

Samsung is improving the Galaxy Buds Pro user experience with a new(ish) firmware update. It was originally released in the USA nearly a week ago but the same update carrying firmware version R190XXU0AUB3 is now making its way onto the Galaxy Buds Pro in the international market.

Same as before, the firmware update is meant to improve upon key Galaxy Buds Pro features. The performance of both Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Ambient Sound was increased as a result, and as usual, the changelog mentions additional system stability and reliability improvements. As discussed in our Galaxy Buds Pro review, ANC and Ambient Sound are two of the strongest points of the new earbuds, and now they’ve just gotten better.

Furthermore, the latest update brings some unspecified changes to the Galaxy Buds Pro’s behavior when the user is wearing a single earbud, though we haven’t really noticed any differences in our limited testing post-update, so perhaps these improvements are under the hood. Without offering any additional details, the changelog simply states that the operating concept has been changed for single earbud use cases.

The latest Galaxy Buds Pro firmware update weighs a little over 2MB and it can be downloaded via the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone. Simply launch the app, access Earbuds software update and tap Download and install.

Latest Galaxy S21 firmware update may have addressed poor battery life

The launch of the Galaxy S21 series hasn’t been without flaws for some customers in Exynos regions, and you might recall that last week we brought an issue to your attention regarding the February 2021 security patch and the possibility that it may have had a negative effect on the flagship’s battery life for some owners. Fortunately, Samsung was aware of the problem and the company may have already addressed it with the latest firmware update.

Samsung is now rolling out a second February firmware update for the Galaxy S21 series, and many users who have experienced battery life issues before are now reporting via the XDA-developers forums that the problem’s been dealt with. Mind you, some users are still reporting the same problems as before, so perhaps Samsung’s new update hasn’t addressed the issue in its entirety or for everyone affected.

The new update can be identified by firmware version G99xBXXU1AUB6. It’s rolling out in dozens of countries — too many to list here — and readers can refer to our firmware archive for the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra to verify if the update can be downloaded for their phones in their regions. As always, you can also check for the firmware by opening Settings on your phone, accessing the Software update section and tapping Download and install.

Since our phones haven’t exhibited the aforementioned battery life issues in the first place, we haven’t noticed any big changes in autonomy following this new firmware update either. Nevertheless, we’ll keep you posted if something comes up, and you’re welcomed to do the same in the comment section below.

Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs are a gamer’s best choice thanks to AMD

Samsung’s new range of Neo QLED TVs have been optimized with the needs of gamers in mind, and right now they could very well be the best TVs on the market for console gamers. This is because the entire Neo QLED TV range adopts AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro technology for the first time in the industry, revealed — and reconfirmed — the company over the weekend.

AMD FreeSync Premium Pro is the latest adaptive synchronization technology from AMD, and although FreeSync has so far been employed mostly by PC monitors, the latest iteration is now making its way onto Samsung’s Neo QLED TV range.

What does FreeSync Premium Pro do?

FreeSync Premium Pro is designed to reduce screen tearing that’s caused by a mismatch between the content’s framerate and the display’s actual refresh rate. This effect can be mild or severe depending on scenery and other factors, and although screen tearing doesn’t make a game unplayable, it’s something that gamers have fought against for years using technologies such as vSync, G-Sync, and FreeSync / FreeSync 2.

And like FreeSync 2, AMD’s new FreeSync Premium Pro was designed to be compatible with HDR. The difference lies in the fact that FreeSync Premium Pro was optimized to reduce screen tearing for 120Hz displays as opposed to 60Hz.

Samsung’s new Neo QLED TVs were launched on pre-order terms in South Korea earlier this month for a starting price of $1,600. The range consists of 55-to-85-inch models, all of which take advantage of AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and other technologies such as 4K AI upsampling and Q-Symphony.

Samsung estimates that over 80% of users who play console games on their TVs use devices such as the Sony PlayStation or Microsoft’s Xbox, so it’s rather obvious that the company wants its Neo QLED TV range to be the first choice among PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X owners.

Will you keep buying Galaxy flagships if they don’t have a microSD slot?

While the Galaxy S21 series has plenty to offer to anyone in the market for a new flagship phone, Samsung has also stripped away a couple of features that everyone had been taking for granted with Galaxy flagships in the last half decade. The Galaxy S21, S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra don’t support MST payments through Samsung Pay in many markets, you get no charger or earphones in the box, and none of these phones come with a microSD slot.

A 3.5 mm headphone jack is missing as well, but since that has been the case for all Galaxy flagships since late 2019, it probably isn’t that big of a deal for most fans compared to the fact that there’s no way to pop in a microSD card into any of the Galaxy S21-series phones to expand storage on the cheap. And given Samsung’s ongoing feature removal streak, there’s a good chance the microSD slot will not be coming back with future Galaxy flagships and will only be seen on the company’s budget and mid-range devices.

When a brand — Samsung, in this case — suddenly stops offering features its customers have been accustomed to for years, it risks losing some of those customers to the competition. Not necessarily because the competition is providing those features, but because their removal makes that brand’s product less special and unique. That’s certainly what many of our readers think about the Galaxy S21 lineup, and here’s what we want to know in our latest poll: Will you keep buying Galaxy flagships if they don’t have a microSD slot?

Let us know by voting and leaving a comment down below!

How to switch to Google Discover on the home screen on One UI 3.1

Formerly called Google Feed, Google Discover is a news feed service that Samsung integrated into One UI 3.1. Mind you, it might not be turned on by default. But the good news is that enabling it should only take a moment.

Here’s how to do so on the Galaxy S21 series, as well as any other Samsung device running the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 OS:

Switching to Google Discover on the Galaxy S21/One UI 3.1

  1. Long-press any empty part of your home screen
  2. Swipe to the last card on the left
  3. Make sure the feed toggle at the top is switched to ‘On’
  4. Select Google Discover over Samsung Free

At this point, you can just back out of that last menu or tap the Home button to return to your home screen. This very same methodology can be used for switching to the Samsung Free service or disabling the news feed functionality altogether, whatever your preference might be.

If long-pressing on your home screen doesn’t activate a carousel of card-based options, that might be because you’re running a custom Android launcher. To switch back to One UI, go to Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app and select One UI Home on the following interface. If you aren’t seeing the news feed card afterward, then you’re likely not running One UI 3.1 yet. It also may not be available if your device came with an older version of One UI and made the jump to version 3.1 through a software update.

Native Google Discover integration is just one of several additions to Samsung’s mobile ecosystem signaling a closer collaboration with Alphabet’s subsidiary. Another recent example of that trend is Samsung’s participation in the Android Enterprise Recommended program. Ditto for the expansion of SmartThings to Google Nest devices.

Galaxy S10+ trade-in values make the Galaxy S21+ upgrade a no-brainer

Galaxy S10+ owners who may want to skip the Galaxy S21 series and keep using the 2019 flagship a little while longer can do so knowing that their device is still powerful enough to handle virtually any task. However, Galaxy S10+ users who want more from their mobile device and are considering switching to the Galaxy S21+ can take advantage of great trade-in deals that make the upgrade a no-brainer.

This is true at least in the USA and a few other countries, as trade-in values differ by market. Not to mention the fact that Samsung doesn’t have a working trade-in program in every region. However, if you plan on buying the Galaxy S21+ in the USA and offer the Galaxy S10+ in return, you’ll benefit from a discount of over 50%.

Galaxy S10+ trade-in value cuts more than half off the Galaxy S21+ price

Samsung is offering a massive $550 discount on the Galaxy S21+ retail price in the USA when trading-in the Galaxy S10+. The latest flagship normally costs $999 or $1,049 depending on whether it comes with 128GB or 256GB of storage.

Trading-in the Galaxy S10+ for the new Galaxy S21+ means you can buy the latest flagship with 128GB of storage for only $449, or the 256GB model for $499. These prices correspond to the unlocked model but choosing the Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint variant of the Galaxy S21+ means an even lower price of just $349 after trade-in.

Without a trade-in, $349 would only buy you the Galaxy A51. It’s a fantastic mid-range phone but that’s exactly what it is: a mid-range phone that can’t hold a candle to the Galaxy S21+ flagship.

Are you a Galaxy S21+ owner or are you planning on becoming one? Have you taken advantage of Samsung’s trade-in program so far, and is the trade-in value offered by the Galaxy S10+ high-enough to convince you to upgrade to the Galaxy S21+? You can refer to the review links and spec tables below for more details on the two phones.
