One Hand Operation + updated with new features, other Good Lock modules get bug fixes

Samsung has released new updates to a few Good Lock modules, including One Hand Operation +, NavStar, QuickStar, and Task Changer. Only the One Hand Operation + module has received new features, while other modules have received bug fixes with the new update.

The new update to One Hand Operation + brings a new feature that lets you adjust media volume. A long swipe up action raises the volume, while a long swipe down action lowers the volume. There’s now a floating button that can be used to incrementally change the volume level. The mini task switcher now has smoother animations. Each open app now gets a three-dot menu that can be used to close the app, keep the app in memory, open it in a pop-up window, and open it in a split-screen window.

The Quick Tools panel in One Hand Operation + now has a toggle for the color inversion accessibility feature. A new swipe action called Screen Rotation has been added to the list of gestures, and when it is activated, it switches the phone’s UI orientation from portrait to landscape and vice versa. It only works when the auto-rotate feature is turned off, though. Samsung has also fixed the handle color bug with the update.

The NavStar module’s update fixes a bug that caused the navigation bar list to disappear when editing and saving the navigation bar. It also fixes the issue where ‘Show on Home Screen’ wasn’t work properly after rebooting the device. The Task Changer module’s update fixes the problem touching the bottom area in Dex mode. It added a feature to let an app open in the background. No new changelog has been provided with the QuickStar update.

Samsung adds two new premium soundbars to round off its 2020 lineup

Samsung has announced that it is adding two new premium soundbars—HW-Q950T and HW-Q900T—to its Q-series lineup. The HW-Q950T is now the company’s most premium soundbar, offering a 9.1.4-channel sound. The HW-Q900T, on the other hand, offers 7.1.2-channel audio. The soundbars not only sound great but look the part, too, thanks to the premium Kvadrat material they come wrapped in.

The HW-Q950T features a soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, and two additional rear up-firing speakers. Combined, they offer a 9.1.4-channel audio experience, something that’s hard to come by in the soundbar segment. Samsung has also added left and right wide channel speakers in the soundbar, offering more realistic audio.

The HW-Q950T and the HW-Q900T come with support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, and Q-Symphony audio technologies. The CES 2020 Best Innovation Award-winning Q-Symphony feature allows you to pair the soundbars with Samsung’s 2020 QLED TVs so that audio is reproduced from both the device, offering richer audio. They also have support for eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) for full and rich audio quality.

HW-Q950T and HW-Q900T soundbars also feature Alexa and SmartThings

They also come with built-in support for Alexa and SmartThings. You can listen to your favorite music from Amazon Prime Music, Apple Music, iHeart Radio, Spotify, and TuneIn. SmartThings-compatible smart home products can also be controlled using the soundbars. They also come with the Tap Sound feature that allows you to transfer your music from your smartphone to the soundbar with just a tap.

Both models are just 69.5mm tall, allowing them to fit in the tight space below your TV. The HW-Q950T is priced at KRW 1.9 million (around $1,590) in South Korea, while the HW-Q900T costs KRW 1.4 million (around $1,170), and they will be available from July 14 in the country. Samsung says that these soundbars are tuned at the Samsung Audio Lab in Valencia, California, in the US.

Seong Cho, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Product Marketing of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, said, “In collaboration with Audio Lab in the US, we have been able to develop multi-dimensional surround sound that can be more accessible at home, which was previously only possible with a separate home-theater system. In addition to improving sound quality, we also focused on fine-tuning the soundbar’s design aesthetic by using eco-friendly textiles, made by Danish premium brand Kvadrat.

Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 get a new Haze Crush Silver color

Samsung often releases new colors for its popular smartphones in a bid to reignite interest in the devices. It has done that today for the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, two of the most well-rounded smartphones from its mid-range 2020 Galaxy A series.

This is yet another addition to the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 catalog. Both devices are available in LTE-only and 5G models. There’s also the Verizon-specific Galaxy A71 5G UW. Both are now available in a new color option as well.

Haze Crush Silver is more subtle than Prism Crush Silver

Samsung today announced that it’s expanding the color options for the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A71. It has introduced a new color option called Haze Crush Silver. This is not to be confused with Prism Crush Silver, a color option that has already been available for the Galaxy A71.

This silver hue is a bit more subtle compared to Prism Crush. It’s perfect for those who prefer a more understated look. Samsung also mentions that the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 in Haze Crush Silver come with the latest software update installed.

The latest update for these devices brings some of the best Galaxy S20 camera features. This includes a full Pro mode with shutter speed and manual focus control. Other features like Single Take, Night Hyperlapse, My Filters, Quick Share and Music Share are all onboard.

Samsung hasn’t said precisely when this new color option will be available for purchase. It only says that availability will vary by region. So keep an eye on your local Samsung website and social media if you’re interested.

[Updated] Galaxy S10 series now getting the July security update

Update 2: The July security patch is now rolling out for the Galaxy S10 lineup for real, after the original release had been pulled for an unknown reason.

Update: Samsung seems to have pulled the update from the air. We will update this article once the rollout resumes again; for now, it’s best to wait since the pulled update might have issues that Samsung wants to fix.

Original story follows

The Galaxy S10 series has started getting an update with the July 2020 security patch. The update has hit the ground running and is rolling out in more than 20 countries in Europe already, and its availability should further expand in the next couple of days. The July update for the Galaxy S10 lineup carries firmware version G97xFXXS7CTF3.

The Galaxy S10 series’ July security update comes after the new security patch was released for the Galaxy S20 seriesthe Galaxy A50, and the Galaxy Z Flip, and we will no doubt see more devices joining the party in the coming days. The update only has security fixes to offer – there are no new features, improvements, or changes included in this release. And, with July yet to begin, Samsung has yet to publish any information on what vulnerabilities are fixed in next month’s security patch, though it shouldn’t be too long before that changes.

If the July update for the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ has been released in your country, you will receive a notification informing you of the same. You can also manually check whether the update is available for your phone by going into its settings, selecting Software update, and hitting the Download and install option. The latest firmware for the Galaxy S10 series is available in our firmware archive as well.

Samsung smart TVs can now show Apple Music’s time-synced lyrics

It has only been three months since Apple Music landed on Samsung smart TVs. A separate app was released for this platform, allowing users to access Apple’s music streaming service through their television. They could stream any of the over 60 million songs available on Apple Music in addition to exploring curated playlists, listening to live radio and more.

The Apple Music app for Samsung’s smart TVs is getting better. Samsung today announced that the music streaming service will now be able to display millions of time-synced lyrics along with the music starting today.

Time-synced lyrics make it more fun to sing along

Apple has been very conservative with apps for its music streaming service. Samsung’s smart TVs are actually the first non-Apple TVs to get Apple Music as the company has not made an app available to any other smart TV platform.

All Samsung smart TVs released in 2018 or later are compatible with Apple Music. If you have one of those TVs, you can access time-synced lyrics starting today as well. This feature would make it so much more fun to sing along to your favorite song as the lyrics are displayed on the big screen synced to the song as it plays.

It’s easy to scroll through a song by flipping through its lyrics, jump to a certain verse or skip straight to the chorus. If you’ve got a lyric stuck in your head and can’t quite remember the song, use the lyric in the search feature and you’ll find that song on Apple Music.

The Apple Music app is available for download from the Samsung Smart TV App Store. Sign into it with your existing Apple ID or purchase a new subscription via the TV itself. Samsung smart TV owners can get a free three-month Apple Music trial with an individual, family or student subscription.

Verizon confirms Galaxy A71 5G UW price and release details

The Galaxy A71 5G is one of the two new mid-range 5G smartphones that Samsung is offering in the US this year. It was also confirmed last month that Verizon would have its own variant of the device which would be branded as the Galaxy A71 5G UW. The ‘UW’ is meant to signify that this device has support for Verizon’s Ultra Wideband 5G network.

Verizon today confirmed the price and release details for the Galaxy A71 5G UW. This happens to be the cheapest 5G smartphone that the largest mobile carrier in the United States now offers. It bodes well for Samsung because customers who want to experience 5G without breaking the bank would gravitate towards its device.

Galaxy A71 5G UW pre-orders start this week

The Galaxy A71 5G UW supports Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. The network uses mmWave 5G technology which allows for faster speeds compared to sub-6GHz 5G. This device will also be compatible with the carrier’s low-band 5G network that’s due to launch later this year. The UW service is currently available in parts of 35 cities across the United States with more cities being added throughout the year.

The specs are the same as other Galaxy A71 variants with just one exception. It has the same 6.7-inch Infinity-O display, 128GB storage, 8GB RAM and 4,500mAh battery. The same camera setup with a 64MP primary, 12MP ultrawide, 5MP macro and 5MP depth sensor is present as well. The only exception is the processor as the Galaxy A71 5G UW uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor as opposed to the Exynos 980 on the Galaxy A71 5G.

Verizon will start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy A71 5G UW from July 9. Customers can get the device for as low as $15 per month for 24 months on Verizon Device Payment with a new line of service. The handset costs $649 outright.

Cabot Circus finally getting its Samsung Experience Store

Cabot Circus, the city of Bristol’s massive shopping centre spanning 139,350 square meters (1.5 million ft²), is finally getting its very own Samsung Experience Store (SES). The British arm of the Korean tech giant confirmed the news mere moments ago, adding that the grand opening is scheduled for tomorrow, July 8th. The plans for the store were made official way back in December as the outlet was originally meant to open its doors to the public this spring. The rest of the story may sound familiar: the largest health crisis in mankind’s recent history happened, non-essential businesses across the world were forced into corporate aestivation, and we just kind of placed life on hold.

The shopping centre on 25 Bond St in the southwest of England was no exception to the government-mandated lockdown. Most of its resident businesses were hence closed from March 23rd through June 15th, though Samsung decided to make the most of the delay by using the idle period to devise customer safety measures meant to secure its stores in the post-COVID-19 world. Or, better said, Partner Retail Services (PRS&) did, because the 13th SES location in the United Kingdom is opening under the same management in charge of the first dozen.

The lucky 13th SES location in the UK

PRS& will be operating the Cabot Circus SES seven days per week, the company said. The store’s regular hours are 10:00 – 18:00, with Sunday timings being 11:00 – 17:00.

Anyone looking to find out more about the new store’s selection or anti-coronavirus measures is encouraged to dial the said shop’s service team at 0333 344 1916. What’s more, local SES management says the same digits are the key to some temporary digital alternatives to physical visits, assuming you’re interested in those.

Samsung Internet gets fancy new tab switcher akin to Chrome

Samsung Internet is getting another distinct interface designed for tab management, fanciness, and tab management fanciness. Simply called “Grid”, the new view is reminiscent of a similar feature Google has been experimenting with in Android versions of Chrome since late 2019. Much like its role model, Samsung’s take on a grid-based tab switcher is currently only available outside of the stable channel.

The good news is that anyone interested in trying out the functionality can do so in a matter of seconds, as Samsung Internet Beta is available for everyone on the Google Play Store and Samsung’s own Galaxy Apps store instead of being locked behind a traditional beta signup process like other apps. You can even sideload the latest version by downloading the installation file from our APK archive.

An improvement on the visibility grid

As soon as you first tap the Tab button found in the app’s toolbar (that became movable this spring), you’ll be presented with a choice of how you’d like your switcher to look like, as seen in the screenshots featured herein. Note that the exact design of your “grid” may vary from that of an actual grid to what’s essentially a less efficient variant of Cards, depending on your system-wide settings concerning font size and proportions of other user interface elements. Regardless of your initial selection, you can always change your mind by opening the tab switchers context menu – also a new addition to version 12.1.1.5.

Assuming no radical changes in development course take place, the grid-like tab switcher is likely to make its way to a stable build of Samsung Internet later this year.

More Galaxy Watch 3 photos leak as the new smartwatch nears launch

It’s only a matter of time now before Samsung unveils the Galaxy Watch 3. We have known for a few months now that it’s coming and that it’s going to bring back the physical rotating bezel. The leaks over the past few weeks have also given us a good look at the device itself.

The latest leak brings us some more Galaxy Watch 3 photos. We can see the device from multiple angles with its strap attached. The wireless charger that will ship with it can also be seen.

Galaxy Watch 3 launch expected on July 22nd

These newly leaked Galaxy Watch 3 photos come from the NCC regulatory filing for the device. The display isn’t turned on in these photos but an earlier leak did show that as well. The strap and charger are fairly standard for a device of this kind.

The Galaxy Watch 3 will be available in 41 and 45mm sizes. There will be 9 distinct configurations with Titanium and Stainless Steel material and Bluetooth/LTE connectivity options in black, silver, bronze/gold colors. Prices are expected to start at $400 and go up to $600 for the Titanium finish.

As far as the specs are concerned, the Galaxy Watch 3 is likely to use the same Exynos 9110 process as the Galaxy Watch Active 2. A circular AMOLED display with 360×360 pixel resolution will adorn the front. There will be 8GB of storage in addition to a 247mAh and 340mAh battery on the 41 and 45mm models respectively.

A variety of health sensors will be present onboard as well. Features like blood pressure monitoring and ECG will be supported too. It remains to be seen if they will be available from the get-go, but it’s unlikely that will be the case. Samsung may also introduce new software functionality as well as refreshed watch faces to make everything look more visually appealing.

Samsung hasn’t said when it’s going to unveil the Galaxy Watch 3 yet. If recent reports are to be believed, it’s going to be launched on July 22nd.

New Galaxy A tablet with Galaxy S9 chip in the works

Samsung is repurposing one of its older premium smartphone chips into the brains of a new budget tablet. Identified by model number SM-T575, the device in question is likely to launch under the Galaxy Tab A brand later this year. Its silicon of choice is the Exynos 9810 – the second chipset based on the 10nm LPP process node to emerge from Samsung’s foundry. The said system-on-chip originally debuted inside the international variants of the Galaxy S9-series devices in early 2018 and was subsequently adopted by the Galaxy Note 9, as well as the Galaxy Xcover FieldPro and Galaxy Note 10 Lite.

As for the aforementioned tablet, it was recently sighted on Geekbench, with the benchmarking platform listing Android 10 and 4GB of RAM as part of its feature set. A separate certification belonging to a battery possibly bound for the SM-T575 suggests a 5,000mAh cell will be part of the package as well.

This is the sixth occasion of Samsung reusing the same chip

In hindsight, Samsung  managed to get some pretty decent mileage out of the Exynos 9810, and that’s without even accounting for the fact it’s reusing the two-year-old system-on-chip once again. If we count the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ separately, the upcoming tablet will mark the sixth implementation of the SoC. While it seems the SM-T575 will serve as its swan song, it’s not like anyone was realistically expecting the Exynos 9810 to have another 2020 cameo in the first place. While the chipset’s Galaxy Xcover FieldPro application was in line with Samsung’s established product practices, the same can’t be said of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. In fact, the very existence of the latter smartphone broke a number of the company’s patterns.

Speaking of product conventions, the model number of the unannounced tablet is indicative of LTE capabilities. A potential Wi-Fi-only variant of the same slate might be called the SM-T570, going by how Samsung usually designates its consumer electronics. Following that same train of thought suggests the device will be part of the Galaxy A series instead of e.g. the successor to the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Speaking of which, this is shaping up to be a largely similar device in terms of raw processing power, though its battery capacity leaves something to be desired, being over 1,000mAh smaller compared to even the smallest (10.1-inch) tablets Samsung released in the last 12 months.

Galaxy A51 and A71 get Galaxy S20 camera features, full Pro mode included

Samsung is rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A71 today. The update brings many of the best Galaxy S20 camera features. These features weren’t part of the One UI 2.1 update that was released for the Galaxy A51 two months ago. One UI 2.1 hadn’t even been released for the Galaxy A71 yet.

Many new camera features were introduced with the Galaxy S20 lineup. It was the first to come with One UI 2.1. Some of the features have now started to trickle down to other devices. What’s particularly noteworthy here is that Samsung has put the full Pro mode on a non-flagship device with this update.

Best Galaxy S20 camera features released for the Galaxy A51 and A71

This firmware update brings a full-fledged Pro mode to the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, including manual focus and shutter speed control. It’s great that Samsung has added this functionality to these popular mid-range devices. The Pro mode on such handsets previously left a lot to be desired. This move only goes to show that Samsung is getting serious about offering great functionality with its mid-range phones.

The Galaxy A51 doesn’t have a Pro video mode, though, but the Galaxy A71 just might. Other Galaxy S20 camera features that have trickled down include Night Hyperlapse and My Filters. Single Take, an AI-powered feature that can capture the moment using several different camera modes simultaneously, has also made its way to the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71.

Quick Share and Music Share are part and parcel of this update as well. This means that the firmware being rolled out for the Galaxy A71 is finally going to bump it up to One UI 2.1. New Keyboard and Gallery features are included too.

This is certainly one of the most feature-packed firmware updates that Samsung has released for these devices. The Galaxy A51 is getting firmware version A515FXXU3BTF4 which you can download now from our database. Check back soon for the Galaxy A71’s latest firmware, it should go up shortly.

Samsung monthly updates: July 2020 security patch details released

Samsung has gotten into the habit of pushing out new security patches to some of its devices before it tells us what security fixes are included in a patch, and the same is true this time around. After releasing the July security update to a handful of its devices, Samsung has published information on the vulnerabilities that are tackled by the new security patch.

July patch fixes crash that could result from setting the wrong wallpaper

As usual, the security patch for Galaxy devices includes fixes for both vulnerabilities in the core Android OS and in Samsung’s software. The July patch fixes four critical Android OS vulnerabilities and a bunch of high- and moderate-risk vulnerabilities, along with 14 vulnerabilities that affect only Galaxy devices. It includes a solution for the issue that made Galaxy (and other Android devices) crash when a certain kind of wallpaper was applied. It also fixes an exploit that enabled unauthorized apps to write data on to the SD card, a vulnerability that could allow access to data through a memory leak, among others.

The July security patch is already available for some Galaxy phones and tablets, including the Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 10, and the Galaxy A50. It will make its way to more devices in the coming weeks, and whether or not it is released for your phone or tablet will depend on Samsung’s security update schedule and, of course, your device’s eligibility. Do keep checking our homepage for alerts of new firmware updates that bring the latest security patch.

Samsung’s UV sterilizer for smartphones is coming to more markets

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, personal hygiene has become more important than ever. Given that we interact with our smartphones and earphones all day long, it is equally important to keep them germ-free, but we are not advised to use regular sanitizers to clean those devices. As a solution to the problem, Samsung had unveiled a UV-based sterilizer for smartphones in Thailand last week. Now, the company has announced that the sterilizer is coming to more markets.

Samsung’s new UV Sterilizer with Wireless Charging will be available in more countries worldwide, and it will be available for purchase through offline and online stores. Manufactured by Samsung C&T, the sterilizer can kill 99% of bacteria and germs using dual UV lamps, at least as per the company’s claims. It can disinfect earphones, glasses, smartphones, smartwatches, and other smaller objects in just 10 minutes.

Samsung’s UV sterilizer also features built-in wireless charging

The UV Sterilizer can kill bacteria and germs like E. coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Candida Albicans, and this has been tested by two independent certification and testing institutes (Intertek and SGS). It can disinfect both the top and bottom surfaces of any device that can be placed inside. It is sleek and lightweight, making it easier to carry anywhere. The device automatically turns off after ten minutes after you start using it.

Samsung has also built the wireless charging feature into its UV Sterilizer, which means that you can charge your Qi-enabled smartphone or earphones will it’s getting cleaned. The device’s maximum wireless charging output is rated at 10 watts. It is priced at TBH 1,560 (around $50) in Thailand, but the company hasn’t unveiled its pricing for international markets just yet. We expect the pricing information to be released over the next few weeks.

More Galaxy Watch 3 software and spec info leaks

We had exclusively revealed the Galaxy Watch 3’s specifications last month and reported that the smartwatch will be launched in July. Later, the upcoming watch’s design and variants were leaked by various sources. Now, some more information regarding the Galaxy Watch 3’s software and specifications has been leaked, thanks to a leaked firmware file.

The Galaxy Watch 3 will reportedly use the same 10nm Exynos 9110 processor that’s used in the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Both 41mm (SM-R850) and 45mm (SM-R840) variants of the smartwatch will use a circular Super AMOLED display with 360×360 pixels resolution. It will come with Tizen OS 5.5 operating system and One UI 2.0 interface. It will feature NFC, loudspeaker, TI AFE4930 health sensor, and 5W wireless charging.

The upcoming smartwatch will also bring brand new watch faces, some of which are included in the video posted by Evan Blass (@evleaks) on Twitter. Some watch faces will have ‘Informative Digital Edges’ that display information such as alarm, battery charge, Bixby, date, day, calendar, calories, email, messages, music, reminder, sleep, steps, stopwatch, temperature, timer, weather, world clock, and more.

Samsung will also allow Informative Digital Edges to show suggestions. It is being expected that the information displayed through Information Digital Edges can change based on the time of the day, and the watch can learn what information users expect from it. There’s also a new watch face that shows animations in the background, depending on the current weather conditions. Reports also suggest that Samsung will replace its email app with Outlook on the Galaxy Watch 3.

Another report from Gizmodo UK suggests that the Galaxy Watch 3 will feature wrist gestures to control various aspects of the software. For example, a fist bump may allow the user to accept an incoming call, and shaking the hand will reject the call. Samsung could also bring a gesture that would allow users to automatically activate Bixby when they bring their wrist near the face.

Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch will be available in Wi-Fi only and LTE variants. The company will launch it in stainless steel and titanium finishes. It features 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, and its body will be MIL-STD-810G-compliant. It will also feature Gorilla Glass DX protection over the screen and IP68 certification for dust and 5 ATM water resistance. It features GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC, and wireless charging.
