Retailer may have revealed the Gear S2 release date for Europe

Earlier this month Samsung formally announced the Gear S2 smartwatch, the company has kept fans waiting for a long time for its round smartwatch and now that it has been revealed many of them just can’t wait to get their hands on one. Samsung has already confirmed that it will release the Gear S2 in October but confirmed release date for different markets have yet to be provided, it appears though that a Dutch retailer has revealed what the Gear S2 release date for Europe is going to be.

Dutch retailer Cool Blue lists October 25 as the release date for both the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic, since Samsung has a habit of releasing new products in multiple countries on the same day it’s quite possible that October 25 might be the day the Gear S2 is released across Europe. Bear in mind though that this is speculation after all and Samsung has not confirmed anything officially yet. Pricing for the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic has already been revealed, if the listing is correct about the release date then the Gear S2 will be released to customers across Europe a little over a month from now.

Samsung reportedly plans to cut jobs in China, again

Even after Samsung rubbished claims about reducing its workforce, the company can’t seem to escape such reports. A new report from China claims that the South Korean consumer electronics giant is planning to cut jobs.

According to local media, Samsung is apparently planning to cut 1,000 jobs in China, which would affect around 9 percent of the company’s workforce. The report cited unidentified sources, but the officials from Samsung’s headquarters in Beijing were not available for comment.

The company’s net profit declined by 8 percent in the second quarter of this year due to intensified competition from local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. Last month, Gartner reported that smartphone sales fell 4 percent in China, marking it as the first quarterly decline.

Samsung has always improved the S Pen-related features with each new Galaxy Note release. Apart from adding the click-to-release mechanism to the S Pen, Samsung has also introduced some new ways to enhance and improve the stylus with the Galaxy Note 5. These new features include capturing long screenshots and adding custom app shortcuts to the Air Command.

In a new blogpost on the company’s official blog, Samsung has published a bunch of quick tutorial videos that show just how easy and convenient is it to do certain things on the Galaxy Note using the S Pen. You can easily describe your location through Action Memo, capture long screenshots and share with your friends, or even write and comment on PDFs.

Could this be how Samsung’s upcoming foldable display smartphone will work?

A smartphone with a foldable display is the next interesting thing on Samsung’s roadmap, and as we exclusively revealed earlier this year, the Korean company is currently working on Project Valley. Project Valley, according to our insiders, is a smartphone that has two displays and could even be foldable; we heard yesterday that Samsung’s first foldable phone could launch in January next year, and the folks over at Patently Mobile have now come across a patent that possibly shows the folding mechanism on the Project Valley device will work.

According to the patent’s illustrations, Samsung has developed a new “hinge system” for implementing a foldable display. It’s a rather basic approach that would see a display placed on a mesh-like material with the hinge then allowing the user to fold the display, making a “valley” in the process of closing or opening it. Provided this patent is related to the Project Valley device, it seems like it would simply feature a single foldable display instead of one that is divided into two sections.

This foldable device is purportedly undergoing testing with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU, with specs that include 3GB of RAM and a microSD slot. We should point out that despite the onslaught of leaks regarding Project Valley recently, nothing is a finality at this point, and we could see things change leading up to Project Valley’s official release. Samsung probably won’t scrap the entire project, but until we see an actual device, everything should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Samsung won’t be manufacturing Nvidia’s Pascal GPU

Nvidia will launch the Pascal GPU next year as a successor of the Maxwell GPU with much better performance. Pascal features the latest HBM2 and 16-nm FinFET based designs so it’s really quite a piece of work, but unfortunately Samsung isn’t going to manufacture the Pascal GPU according to Business Korea. Instead, Nvidia has offered a contract to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is an interesting choice since Samsung started producing 14-nm FETs before TSMC did. On the other hand TSMC has been a partner of Nvidia’s for 20 years and they have always had a consistent production process, something is very important to the GPU manufacturer.

This is a big loss for Samsung because the Pascal GPU is set to take next-generation even further. It’s a GPU that will feature an unparalleled 17 billion transistors, more VRAM and a far better memory capacity due to HBM2. It matters a lot because 4K and 8K displays are really making their way through the tech market and these sort of displays need a lot of power to deliver quality. Pascal also marks a milestone in next-generation gaming because it introduces NVLINK, which solves a lot of bandwidth issues that many powerful GPUs are currently facing. We’ll be getting a total of 1TB/s bandwidth, twice as much when compared to AMD’s Fiji cards (512 GB/s) and three times that of the GeForce 980 Ti (334 GB/s).
