T-Mobile also releases Stagefright fix for the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy Note 4

It all started a couple of weeks ago when it was discovered that Android has a vulnerability called Stagefright which can allow attackers to gain access to a target’s device by simply sending a MMS message with a video that has the malicious code embedded in it. Google was quick to push a fix but it inevitably got held up at OEM partners are carriers. In the United States Sprint was the first carrier to get this patch out the door and then AT&T followed, Verizon released this update just a few hours ago. Last but not the least T-Mobile is also rolling out this update now.

T-Mobile is rolling out software version N910TUVU1COG2 for the Galaxy Note 4, version N915TUVU1BOG2 for the Galaxy Note Edge and version G900TUVU1FOG6 for the Galaxy S5. The changelog mentions that the update brings “messaging security improvements,” particularly a fix for the Stagefright vulnerability. It’s only a matter of time before this update is also released for more recent models like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. Users can download this update through Samsung Kies or wait for the OTA file to arrive which shouldn’t take too long.

Verizon releases Stagefright patch for Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy Note 4

Soon after Google released a patch for the Stagefright vulnerability in Android many thought it wouldn’t be long till the major carriers released this update, however some of them have taken their sweet time in getting this update out to users. Sprint was the first major carrier in the United States to roll out the Stagefright fix and AT&T followed suit. A couple of days later Verizon has now finally released the Stagefright fix for the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy Note 4.

Verizon actually started rolling out this update first for the Galaxy Note Edge but now it appears that the Stagefright fix is also being released for the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4 as well, it’s hard to believe that this update won’t soon be released for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge as well on Big Red. This much awaited update patches the crucial Stagefright vulnerability in Android that can allow hackers to gain access to a target device by just sending a MMS message with a video that has malicious code embedded in it. Since the Stagefright fiasco Samsung and Google have both committed to providing security-related updates at least once per month for Android devices.

Samsung Experience Stores not affected in recent data breach at Carphone Warehouse

This weekend major UK retailer Carphone Warehouse announced that it had recently been hit by a major data breach which resulted in personal information of more than 2.4 million customers being compromised. This led many to believe that the hack might have affected Samsung Experience Stores as well that are operated by Carphone Warehouse but a spokesperson for the company has confirmed that this isn’t the case.

Samsung signed a partner agreement with Carphone Warehouse about two years ago to expand its retail presence across major markets in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom. Samsung Experience Stores operates within Carphone Warehouse locations across the United States with the retailer tasked with operating those mini-stores. A Samsung spokesperson tells Android Central that the company is aware of the situation stemming from the Carphone Warehouse data breach and can confirm “this will not impact Samsung Experience Stores.”

Has Samsung already begun testing the Snapdragon 820 for the Galaxy S7?

It has been close to six months since the official announcement of the Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy Note 5 as well as the Galaxy S6 edge+ are almost official, the rumour mill surrounding the Galaxy S7 has begun already. There was also a report last week stating about Samsung’s ‘Agile Development Process’ that might lead to faster development of its next high-end smartphone.

According to a new report coming out of China, Samsung has started testing the Qualcomm’s most high-end SoC, the Snapdragon 820, for its flagship smartphone for 2016, the Galaxy S7. Last month, there was a report suggesting that the Galaxy S7 is codenamed ‘Jungfrau‘ internally, and that Samsung was considering both Snapdragon 820 and an Exynos SoC to be used in the device. Now, the device has appeared in leaked screenshots of what is being claimed as Samsung’s internal documents concerning the company’s Android M upgrade program.

As per the images that were leaked last week, the Snapdragon 820 is expected to feature a 64-bit quad-core CPU with 14nm FinFET Hydra cores that showcases 35 percent improvement over the Snapdragon 810, an Adreno 530 GPU, LP-DDR4 RAM support, Cat. 10 LTE modem, support for both eMMC 5.1 and UFS storage solutions, and 4K60 fps encode/decode capabilities.

Earlier this year, Samsung ditched the Snapdragon 810 SoC and completely shifted to the Exynos 7420 for the Galaxy S6 as the company found out that Qualcomm’s chipset had heating issues. Even if this report is a real deal, it doesn’t mean that Samsung will ditch Exynos in favor of  Snapdragon 820 for the Galaxy S7. The company always tests the best SoCs in the market when its devices are under development.

The Galaxy J5 comes with Gameloft games installed as system apps

One step forward, two steps back. That’s the motto Samsung seems to have followed this year when it comes to bloatware on its smartphones. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were lauded for allowing users to disable more system apps than was possible on previous Samsung devices, and even though you can’t disable most of the preloaded apps on the S6 lineup, it was a welcome step forward from the Korean giant.

But it seems Samsung’s new direction for bloatware doesn’t fully expand to its budget smartphones yet, as the Galaxy J5 actually comes with Gameloft games preloaded as system apps. That’s right – the J5 comes installed with a couple of games that you have to take the pain to disable one by one. The Galaxy J5 (and J7) comes bundled with a deal that gives users free in-game content worth Rs. 3,200 (roughly $50) to users, so we can totally see why Samsung is doing this.

But after all the progress Android has made in terms of user control over bloatware and the wait Samsung users have had to endure before they had a similar amount of control, the company went and decided that preloading a smartphone with games that most will never play is a good idea. First it was the Microsoft apps, and now the games from Gameloft, making us wonder what Samsung will one day decide to put on its smartphones just to be able to make money off its deals with other corporations.

If only we were all in China and could disable anything and everything we wanted.

Exclusive: Some more information about Samsung’s Gear A smartwatch variants and codenames

We’ve been waiting for the first circular smartwatch from Samsung for quite some time now. Codenamed ‘Project Orbis‘ internally, the Gear A smartwatch runs a version of Tizen platform, and is expected to be officially announced either during the company’s event on August 13, or during IFA 2015.

Now, we have received some more information about multiple variants of the Gear A. According to the information that we’ve received, the Gear A has at least three variants – SM-R720, SM-R730, and SM-R732 –, and all of them have the word ‘Orbis‘ in their internal codenames. The SM-R720 is internally known as the Orbis S1, the SM-R730 is called the Orbis S2, while the SM-R732 is internally known as the Orbis Classic.

It is possible that Samsung is trying to do what Apple did with the Apple Watch by launching multiple variants of its smartwatch. It might launch multiple variants of the Gear A with differences in connectivity options as well as style, and maybe build materials.

The South Korean electronics giant has already revealed some information regarding its upcoming Gear smartwatch including a rotating bezel for navigation and some launch partners who will have their apps ready before the announcement of the Gear A.  Not only did Samsung release the SDK to developers, it has also started testing mobile payments through its upcoming smartwatch.

As we reported earlier, the Gear A smartwatch is expected to feature a circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels, an Exynos 3472 processor, 768MB RAM, 4GB of onboard storage, Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi b/g/n, cellular connectivity (in some variants), NFC, a heart-rate sensor, and a 250 mAh battery. Do you think that Samsung can make a smartwatch that is better than Android Wear watches or the Apple Watch?
