Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20 devices meet universal accessibility standards

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20 smartphones have received the accessibility certification from Spain-based NGO Fundación ONCE (the ONCE Foundation). The Amovil seal is offered by Fundación ONCE in collaboration with universal accessibility consultancy ILUNION Tecnología y Accesibilidad to commercially available smartphones that meet universal accessibility standards.

The South Korean tech giant is the first smartphone brand to receive the ONCE Foundation’s seal of accessibility. This means that the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra meet universal accessibility standards. These Samsung smartphones are easier to use for people who have disabilities.

Samsung says that these certifications are a result of its close collaboration with the ONCE Foundation. The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20 smartphones offer accessibility features for people with moderate and severe manipulation difficulties, difficulty seeing colors, speech difficulties, zero and partial hearing, and zero and partial vision. They also include comprehensive accessibility menu to find the features that users are looking for.

Two months ago, the company released three Bixby Vision-powered accessibility features: Color Detector, Quick Reader, and Scene Describer. These features help users with disabilities to easily access features through minimal interaction with the smartphone and navigate in the real world.

Alfonso Fernández, Head of Marketing, Corporate Communication, and Institutional Relations at Samsung Electronics Iberia, said, “We are very proud to be the first to receive the ONCE Foundation seal of accessibility, which is another sign of our efforts to make all our products accessible to as many people as possible.

Galaxy M51 receives FCC certification, reveals 25W fast charging

Our exclusive report had revealed three months ago that Samsung is working on the Galaxy M51 with 128GB internal storage. Last month, we also exclusively revealed the upcoming mid-range smartphone’s camera specifications. Now, the phone has passed through the FCC certification process, revealing more bits and pieces of information that was not known earlier.

The Galaxy M51’s (SM-M515F) FCC certification documents reveal that it will support 25W fast charging, similar to the recently launched Galaxy M31s. The phone will also feature LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth with LE, NFC, and a 3.86V battery. A 25W fast charger and wired earphones will also be bundled with the phone. The phone’s Settings menu screenshot also appears in the certification documents, revealing a dual-SIM card slot.

The phone recently received certifications from Bluetooth SIG and Wi-Fi Alliance. Previous reports have claimed that the Galaxy M51 will feature CSOT’s 6.5-inch OLED screen, a Snapdragon 730 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB internal storage. The phone will most probably be launched in September running Android 10-based One UI 2.x.

The Galaxy M51 will feature a quad-camera setup with a 64MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The other two sensors could for depth sensing and macro shots. The upcoming phone could be powered by a 7,000mAh battery.

Samsung could rank 4th in network equipment market in 2020

Ever since western markets started distancing themselves from Huawei, the world’s largest network equipment brand, Samsung has begun focusing on its network business globally. Now, the South Korean firm has a chance to prove its telecommunication technologies, and it could rank fourth in the network equipment market in 2020.

According to a new report from market tracker TrendForce, Samsung is estimated to an 8.5 percent share of the network equipment market this year, which is up from 6.5 percent in 2019. After the successful deployments of 5G networks for KT, LG Uplus, and SKT in South Korea, the company has seen a surge in its networks business. The company has also bagged orders from American brands like AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, and Canadian operator TELUS.

Despite the improvement in its market share, Samsung will still rank fourth in the global market, which is dominated by Chinese and European players. Huawei is expected to overtake Ericsson as the top vendor in the global mobile base station equipment market with a 25.8 percent share. Ericsson and Nokia will reportedly be able to capture 26.5 percent and 22 percent share of the market, respectively.

It is being expected that the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in people’s lifestyles will help the 5G market grow further. Samsung has already been expanding its presence in the 5G network equipment market and improving its technologies. It recently started offering 5G virtualized RANs to operators for improved cost-effectiveness and easier network load management. The company has also developed a way to use AI and drones to maintain 5G towers.

Samsung bags chip manufacturing orders from Cisco and Google

Samsung has been trying to defeat TSMC and become the top player in the foundry business. However, it has always been one step behind the Taiwanese firm. However, it now appears that the South Korean chip giant might have a chance to better compete with TSMC as it has reportedly bagged chip orders from Cisco and Google.

According to a new report from South Korean tech publication ETNews, Samsung received a contract earlier this year to design and manufacture a chip that will be used in Cisco’s next-generation telecommunication network. An industry insider reportedly mentioned that the South Korean firm is currently working on the development of the chip’s design. The company is also said to have bagged orders from Google for designing and manufacturing a semiconductor chip that will be used in a sensor that can measure body movements.

Samsung will design and manufacture chips for Cisco, Google

Usually, foundries only manufacture chips that have already been designed. However, Samsung is taking a different approach for the time being and offering to develop features its customers need and provide customized technologies. So, the company will handle entire processes from design to mass production of chips for Cisco and Google. The company’s ultimate goal is to become the largest foundry in the world and, to achieve that, it is taking a slightly different route compared to other foundries.

The exact worth of chip orders from Cisco and Google isn’t known yet. However, since Cisco is the world’s largest network equipment manufacturer that makes over $50 billion worth of sales every year, the order could be pretty big. Even Google is looking to strengthen its AR, AI-powered smart speaker, and smartphone businesses. It was also reported in the past that Samsung is designing custom SoCs for Google.

A significant part of Samsung’s revenue for Q2 2020 came from its foundry and semiconductor divisions, and its chip business has seen an upwards trend. It is the only brand in the world apart from TSMC that has developed 7nm or lower chip manufacturing technologies. It has already received chip orders for Facebook’s AR chips, Nvidia’s Ampere GPUs, Tesla’s autonomous vehicles, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 875G and Snapdragon 735G SoCs.

Currently, TSMC holds a 51.5% share of the contract manufacturing market, while Samsung has an 18.8% share of the market. The South Korean firm recently started the mass production of 5nm chips, but it has reportedly faced issues related to lower yield. However, the company has flat out denied those reports and said that the manufacturing plan is being successfully executed.

If the Galaxy Watch 3 is excessive, keep the rumored Galaxy Fit 2 in mind

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Watch 3 at Galaxy Unpacked 2020, that much is certain judging by all of the company’s official teasers. In fact, quite a few Galaxy devices will be unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked in a couple of days, but one device that remains largely a mystery is the apparent sequel to the Galaxy Fit. It’s been pushed to the side by all the other major leaks and it might not make the stage at Galaxy Unpacked 2020, but nevertheless, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Samsung is brewing up a new fitness tracker for a 2020 release.

As some of you might recall, the so-called SM-R220 has been approved by various regulatory agencies over the past few weeks, including South Korea’s NRRA, the FCC, and Bluetooth SIG. This doesn’t always guarantee an imminent launch, but it’s worth noting that the original Galaxy Fit was released a little over a year ago and, as of this writing, the product is no longer available for purchase from Samsung USA (screenshot below).

The fact that there hasn’t been any buzz lately around the tentatively-named Galaxy Fit 2 suggests that the wearable might not be planned for a reveal at Galaxy Unpacked 2020. However, given that the original Galaxy Fit is no longer on sale and considering the regulatory approvals amassed by the SM-R220, Samsung might be aiming to release this unannounced product by the end of the year or maybe even around the holiday shopping season.

With that in mind, if you’re looking to buy a new wearable with fitness capabilities from Samsung in the coming months, the Galaxy Watch 3 might not be your only, or even the best option if you’re mainly interested in fitness tracking and/or you don’t feel like spending too much money on a smartwatch.

Then again, there’s little known about the so-called Galaxy Fit 2 and there’s always a chance that Samsung will change its mind on a product before it has a proper chance on the market. So perhaps you shouldn’t set any plans in stone based on these recent events. You probably can’t go wrong with the Galaxy Watch 3 if you can’t wait until more details on the Galaxy Fit 2 emerge; but if you’re not in a rush, keep your eyes peeled and you might be able to buy a brand-new Samsung fitness tracker by the end of the year.

Samsung might pull the the plug on Galaxy S10/Note 10 to stay profitable

Samsung, like many other companies, is having a tough year, and the Korean tech giant might be thinking of drastic changes to maintain profitability in the mobile business. Despite Galaxy S20 sales disappointing, partly for reasons outside of Samsung’s control, the company revealed at its Q2 earnings call that smartphone sales should start gradually improving thanks to further cost optimizations and a reduction in marketing spendings.

However, Samsung might be considering more drastic solutions to maintain profitability, and it’s apparently weighing the pros and cons of stopping the sale of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series’ earlier than expected.

According to a recent tweet by @MauriQHD, there was a big debate inside Samsung not too long ago in regards to the near future of the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, the original Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, the company’s tablet lineup and more. The source claims that some of the points debated by Samsung were crazy, and that it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Samsung will soon decide to stop selling the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series altogether.

The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series could become victims of the COVID era

This seemingly counter-intuitive strategy would presumably allow Samsung to cut costs and offset those lost sales by focusing aggressively on promoting its upcoming products like the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the Galaxy Tab S7 series and so on. We’ve already seen a big push from Samsung ahead of Galaxy Unpacked 2020, with multiple devices – including wearables – having been scheduled for an official unveiling on the same day.

This all remains speculative for now, so take the information with a proverbial pinch of salt. Besides, it’s unclear whether these extreme measures – if implemented – would be temporary and affect only the 2019 flagships, or if they are of a more permanent nature and we should expect the Galaxy Note 20 series to be pulled from sale soon after its sequel goes live next year. Either way, if Samsung is feeling the pressure of the current economic landscape, the company may be facing tough decisions in its quest to maintain profitability.

Here are some photos of Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Tab S7 retail boxes

Almost everything about the Galaxy Tab S7 series, the Galaxy Watch 3, and other upcoming devices got leaked over the past couple of weeks. Press renders have given us a deep insight into the exterior design and the software / S Pen experience of the tablet, while early Google Play listings confirmed our suspicions regarding the internal hardware. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 3 got its own fair share of leaked renders, leaving nothing to the imagination.

Chances for a ‘breaking leak’ about these upcoming devices to exist at this time are virtually non-existent, so how about one final (presumably) leak to seal the deal? It’s nothing that will make you reconsider your thoughts on the Galaxy Tab S7 or the Galaxy Watch 3; we’ve just established that you should manage your expectations moving forward.

But if you ever felt like you must know how the retail boxes for the Galaxy Tab S7+ 5G and the Galaxy Watch 3 look like before deciding whether or not you’ll be buying the tablet or the smartwatch, here are a few photos, courtesy of @kriszlosthopes via @MaxWinebachAndroid Authorityand @Slashleaks.

The Galaxy Watch 3 is getting readied for retail at Best Buy

If you’re not surprised by anything shown in these photos, that’s okay, we weren’t either. And if there is anything left unknown about the Galaxy Tab S7 series, the Galaxy Watch 3, and other upcoming Galaxy products, we’re bound to find out at Galaxy Unpacked on August 5; if not earlier through unofficial channels…

It’s worth noting, however, that the first three photos of the Galaxy Watch 3 were apparently captured at Best Buy, so expect the US retailer to have the smartwatch on sale as soon as Samsung gives the green light.

Look forward to our reviews and coverage, and don’t forget to tune in to Galaxy Unpacked 2020. It’s going to be Samsung’s first major virtual event of its kind so you might not want to miss it.

Gadgets and celebrities show up in new Galaxy Unpacked 2020 trailer

Galaxy Unpacked 2020 is only a couple of days away and as if the recent wave of leaks wasn’t enough to keep everyone’s focus on the event, Samsung is doing its part by weighing in with a series of trailers.

The company’s first official trailer for the event gave us a glimpse of the devices that are set to be unveiled this week, and now Samsung has launched a second official trailer for Galaxy Unpacked 2020 featuring the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy Buds Live, and the Galaxy Watch 3.

The trailer is meant to tease New Powerful Experiences and leverages the presence of a number of celebrities including Myth, Khalid, and members of the K-pop supergroup BTS to get that point across. It even features TM Roh himself to lend more weight to the importance of the event.

Welcome to the Next Normal

While the trailer begins with an invitation to explore New Powerful Experiences, we’re left with a final message that reads Welcome to the Next Normal. This bit of text appears to have been chosen carefully, as it not only invites people to get ready for a new standard in the mobile industry but also reminds fans of the brand that, for the first time in Samsung’s history, Galaxy Unpacked 2020 will be carried out exclusively online without a physical crowd of fans and media representatives alike.

This decision to create a virtual Galaxy Unpacked event was made in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is a chance that things may never be the same even when we will no longer need to promote social distancing. Samsung’s first virtual launch event could be so successful that the company may never want to go back to the traditional formula. Time will tell. Until then, we look forward to Galaxy Unpacked 2020 and we’re hoping it will be a success. If you want to join us online, hit this link to learn where you’ll be able to watch the event and what you can expect from it come August 5.

Samsung could become an Arm shareholder if Nvidia doesn’t buy Arm first

The fate of semiconductor design company Arm remains unclear as fresh reports citing industry watchers suggest at least two possible futures, one of which includes Samsung. As you may recall, analyst Jim Hardy recently claimed that the Korean tech giant has no intention of buying Arm, however, even if this may be the case, a fresh report from The Korea Times citing an anonymous top industry official now claims that Samsung could at least become an Arm shareholder.

For readers who might not be aware, Arm has been put up for sale by SoftBank and industry watchers are keeping a close eye on this deal said to be worth around $40 billion. It’s unclear how the future will pan out in regards to Arm’s ownership, but according to the recent report, Arm won’t be bought by a single company but by a consortium led by multiple parties from the semiconductor industry.

Samsung could be one of the member companies, meaning that once the deal is made, the Korean giant will become an Arm shareholder. The source claims that Samsung’s involvement will be similar to when it acquired equities in Dutch semiconductor equipment supplier ASML.

There is another possible outcome

In parallel with this report, Business Korea citing Bloomberg claims that Arm could still be bought by a single entity, namely Nvidia. The GPU giant is seemingly in advanced talks with SoftBank over the potential acquisition of ARM, claims the source. The company is said to be looking at a $32 billion transaction.

It does seem less plausible for a single company to be acquiring Arm and more likely that a group of companies will chip in to get a share of the pie, but according to the report, a deal with Nvidia could be finalized as early as the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, industry watchers fear that a deal between Arm and Nvidia could be a cause for concern, as the latter company might want to keep patents for itself and/or command exorbitant licencing fees. Needless to say, if Nvidia will buy Arm, this will most likely leave Samsung out of the picture.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020: How to watch and what to expect

In just two days, Samsung will hold what is going to be its busiest Unpacked launch event yet. If we count each device separately in the upcoming flagship Galaxy phone and tablet lineups, the Korean giant is going to unveil six different products on August 5. Seven, if we count the teaser for Samsung’s new foldable phone that is most likely going to be shown once the other devices have been unveiled.

The six devices that Samsung will reveal on Wednesday are the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Tab S7+, Galaxy Watch 3, and Galaxy Buds Live. There’s not a lot that we don’t already know about them, thanks to the tremendous amount of leaks and rumors that have hit the internet in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t excited to watch Samsung make it all official.

Unlike previous years, we will also be watching the event online like everyone else, because this particular Unpacked launch is going to take place virtually as a result of the coronavirus pandemic still wreaking havoc the world over. It will be streamed live starting at 10 AM Eastern Time on Wednesday, August 5, and as always, the stream will be available on Samsung’s website, its official YouTube channel, and on Twitter and Facebook. We’ll also have the link for the stream embedded below once it goes live.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7+, and Galaxy Watch 3 will be the primary highlights

While this edition of Unpacked will have something for everyone, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7+, and Galaxy Watch 3 will no doubt steal most of the limelight. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra because it’s going to be the new top-of-the-line flagship phone from Samsung for the second half of 2020, the Galaxy Tab S7+ because it’s going to be Samsung’s answer to the Apple iPad Pro, and the Galaxy Watch 3 because, well, it’s bringing back the physical rotating bezel that Samsung last used on a smartwatch two years back.

The Galaxy Buds Live will also have many takers. Samsung’s newest wireless earbuds have a new design and bring active noise cancellation to the table for the first time, although the rumored price tag might make it a tough sell compared to the excellent Galaxy Buds+. The Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Note 20 may have the same problem, as both of those devices are expected to have a number of compromises. The Galaxy Tab S7, for example, is said to feature an LCD display, while the Galaxy Note 20 will miss out on features like the latest Gorilla Glass protection, 120Hz refresh rate, and a microSD slot while commanding a near €1000 price tag.

Here’s your first look at the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition 5G

Nearly two months after we had first caught wind of it, the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has finally shown its face, courtesy of well-known industry insider Evan Blass. What appears to be an official press render of the Galaxy S20 FE 5G (SM-G781) was shared on the evleaks Patreon channel just moments ago, showcasing a somewhat modest-looking device, at least relative to Samsung’s previously released smartphones leveraging the company’s Infinity-O Display.

As was expected from what’s essentially a Lite variant of the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20 FE won’t push the envelope in terms of screen-to-body ratio.

Galaxy S20 FE to arrive in a number of prismatic colors

In addition to this bluish hue, it was a month ago that we had revealed the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will also be available in white and light violet, and green, orange, and red were also revealed to be included in the list of color options in a separate leak. Those other finishes are yet to make an appearance, however. Given what Samsung did with the Galaxy S10 Lite, there’s a chance those color options end up being marketed as Prism Blue, Prism White, Prism Violet, Prism Green, Prism Orange, and Prism Red.

What’s less clear is what kind of spec sheet are we to expect from the Galaxy S20 FE 5G; save from the titular 5G support. Samsung itself was reportedly quite conflicted on the matter, primarily due to the crazy level of competition the Galaxy S20 FE 5G is facing. With that said, a 120Hz display is among the likeliest novel features, which makes sense seeing how that happens to be one of the main selling points of Samsung’s 2020 mobile portfolio. A 4,500 mAh battery and a camera setup similar to the standard Galaxy S20 are expected as well.

Given the timing of its initial appearance, it’s reasonable to assume the Galaxy S20 FE 5G will be making an appearance at this week’s Galaxy Unpacked event. However, the value-first flagship is unlikely to hit the market alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series, the star of the August 5th happening. Instead, the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition range is expected to become available for purchase this fall.

August security update released for the Galaxy S20 series

The latest security update is beginning to show up for owners of the latest Galaxy flagship(s) in some parts of the world. The Exynos-powered Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra are receiving a new software update that carries firmware version G986xXXS4ATGB and bundles the August security patch. It’s  available in some European countries at the moment, but the rollout will no doubt expand to cover more markets in the next couple of days.

The latest Galaxy S20 update is the first one in a long time to come with only new security fixes as part of the package. And we can imagine that will be the case in the near future as well, until Samsung is ready to bring One UI 2.5 to the Galaxy S20 lineup. The One UI 2.5 update is already in the works and will introduce many Galaxy Note 20 features to existing Galaxy devices, but there’s no telling when Samsung will start rolling it out, except that it will likely arrive after the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra hit stores worldwide.

In any case, a security update is also an essential update, and if you own any of the Galaxy S20 smartphones, you should download it right away. You can grab the update over the air by tapping the Download and install option in your phone’s Settings » Software update menu. We also have the latest firmware available in our archive in case you’re interested in manually upgrading your phone to the latest software.

Samsung now has its own COVID-19 testing center in South Korea

Samsung had to close various factories and stores across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of its R&D center employees and factory workers had even tested positive for the virus in the past. Now, the company has set up an in-house COVID-19 testing center in South Korea.

The South Korean tech giant has now become the first private firm in South Korea to have a private COVID-19 testing facility. Samsung has set up the testing center at its Hwaseong plant to ramp up its anti-virus measures and to keep its employees safe. The center will manage specimen collection, conduct diagnostic tests, and execute other related tasks with the help of six medical professionals.

The company seems to have set up its own testing center to save time in testing thousands of its full-time and contract employees for the COVID-19 infection. The company will also help the residents of the Hwaseong city with its new testing facility. Samsung said that it will consider opening more testing centers at its production sites in South Korea.

Samsung’s smartphone and TV businesses have taken a hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic related closures and financial crisis across the world. However, its chip business experienced strong sales due to more people learning and working from their homes. The company expects to return to normalcy by the end of 2020 or in the first quarter of 2021.
