Google: Samsung will release stable Android 10 update by end of year

Samsung may not want to say it to its customers officially, but if we are to be believe Google, the Korean giant will release the stable Android 10 update for some devices before 2020. Google, in a post on its Android developers blog about how Project Treble has helped make adoption of newer versions of Android faster, revealed that “many manufacturers such as ASUS, LG, Motorola, OPPO, Realme, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Transsion, and Vivo have committed to updating some of their devices to Android 10 by the end of the year.”

Now, before you get excited, you should keep in mind that this does not mean Samsung will have updated some of its devices to Android 10 and One UI 2.0 beta before the end of the year in every country around the world. However, we can expect it to not limit the rollout to just one country – the Galaxy S9’s stable Android Pie update was first released around Christmas last year, but it took a few weeks for the update to expand to more than one market. The Galaxy S10 is likely to be the first Galaxy device to be updated, followed by the Galaxy Note 10.

In its blog post, Google has also praised Samsung for launching an open Android 10 beta more than a month earlier than it released the Android Pie beta last year. That’s something that took us by surprise as well, but we are a little less enamored by the fact that the Galaxy S10 beta program is still available only in three countries and the Galaxy Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta is yet to make its debut. However, that will hopefully change later today.

Google’s official blog post is an interesting read, so go ahead and check it out at the source link below.

New Exynos 990 SoC makes Samsung phones with 120Hz displays a possibility

Samsung teased a new Exynos processor launch yesterday. The company today unveiled the Exynos 990 mobile processor at the Samsung Tech Day 2019 event in San Jose, California. Samsung describes it as a premium mobile processor built on the 7nm EUV process.

It’s accompanied by a new 5G modem called the Exynos Modem 5123. It’s also built using the same process technology as the mobile processor and is adapted for high-volume 5G applications. It’s actually one of the first 5G modem chips manufactured using this process. The 5G Exynos Modem 5123 has support for all network technologies. This includes sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G spectrums to 2G, 3G and 4G LTE. With up to 8-carrier aggregation, it can deliver maximum download speeds of up to 5.1 Gbps on 5G or up to 3.0 Gbps in 4G.

Exynos 990 is Samsung’s latest premium mobile processor

The Exynos 990 features an embedded ARM Mali-G77 GPU. It’s the first premium GPU that’s based on the new Valhall architecture which promises performance and power efficiency gains of up to 20 percent. That’s over and above the 20 percent performance improvement from the flexible tri-cluster CPU structure which consists of two custom cores, two high performance Cortex-A76 and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Exynos 990 is that it features a 120Hz refresh-rate display driver. This should open the door for future Samsung smartphones with 120Hz displays, something that many have been looking forward to. The company itself mentions that this should reduce screen tearing and allow for smoother animations even on devices like foldable phones.

Since AI is all the rage these days, there’s no surprise that the Exynos 990 has a neural processing unit or NPU on board. It features a dual-core NPU with an improved digital signal processor capable of performing more than ten-trillion operations per second. Having an NPU on board means that the AI can process all of the data on the device itself. This helps improve the functionality of features like facial recognition and scene detection.

With support for LPDDR5 memory and an advanced image signal processor that can support up to six individual image sensors and process three of them at the same time, the Exynos 990 can enable pro-grade photography with a resolution of up to 108 megapixels.

Samsung says that the Exynos 990 and Exynos Modem 5123 is going to enter mass production by the end of this year. This means we can expect them to start showing up in Samsung devices early next year.

Get ready for mid-range Samsung smartphones with over 10GB of RAM

Samsung knows a thing or two about memory technology and the company always puts that expertise to good use. It announced at the annual Samsung Tech Day event today that the mass production of the industry’s first 12GB LPDDR4X-based uMCP has now begun.

What that means in English is that Samsung has now made it possible for mid-range smartphones to have more than 10GB of RAM. That’s going to provide a significant improvement in user experience for customers who don’t get a flagship device.

This will be a game-changer for mid-range smartphones

The uMCP or UFS-based multichip package utilizes Samsung’s 24-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4X chips. This allows Samsung to offer the highest mobile RAM capacity of 12GB for both flagship and mid-range devices. This is made possible by combining four 24Gb LPDDR4X chips with an ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage into one single package. So it breaks through the existing 8GB package limit and allows for 10+ GB RAM to be put in mid-range devices.

This memory package has 1.5X the capacity of the previous 8GB package and supports a data transfer rate of 4,266 megabits per second (Mbps). It also supports smooth 4K video recording and enhanced AI/machine learning features for mid-range smartphones.

Samsung is mass producing two uMCP memory solutions. The 12GB package has four 24Gb (3GB) chips with eUFS 3.0 NAND and the 10GB package combines two 24Gb (3GB) chips with two 16Gb (2GB) chips and the eUFS 3.0 NAND. The company says that it will rapidly expand the availability of these packages. Seems like Samsung’s upcoming mid-range smartphones will have quite a competitive edge over their rivals.

Samsung shows off its latest processor, memory and 5G technologies

Samsung unveiled a whole host of new silicon technologies at its Annual Tech Day event in San Jose, California today. The agenda included a new premium mobile processor, a new 5G modem, the mass production of its latest DRAM and more.

Today’s announcements show that Samsung is building on its strengths to become even more competitive in the semiconductor market. This market is of great importance of Samsung given that it accounts for a big chunk of the conglomerate’s revenues.

A new premium mobile SoC and 5G modem were on the agenda

The Exynos 990 premium mobile SoC was one of the highlights of Tech Day 2019. It’s accompanied by the 5G Exynos Modem 5123. Both chips are built on the most advanced 7nm process using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. Aside from generational enhancements, the Exynos 990 also comes with a 120Hz refresh-rate display driver, which could mean that Samsung phones with 120Hz displays may become a possibility next year.

The company also announced the mass production of its third-generation 10nm class 1z-nm DRAM. It’s optimized for premium server platform development. This couldn’t have come at a better time as data center customers are expected to ramp up their memory purchases in the final quarter of this year.

A spike in demand will help Samsung recoup the revenues that it has lost from this business over the past few quarters due to a supply glut. To that end, it also highlighted new business possibilities for next-generation memory technologies. This includes the company’s 7th-generation V-NAND for premium memory solutions and next-generation PCIe Gen5 SSDs for storage and server applications.

Samsung unveiled its UFS-based 12GB LPDDR4X multichip package. It combines four 24Gb LPDDR4X chips with an ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage in one single package. This will allow the company to go beyond the existing 8GB package limit in mid-range smartphones while also bringing more than 10GB of memory to the smartphone market at large.

The company also set up a demo pavilion at Tech Day 2019 to showcase the future of mobile and 5G, home automation, data centers and automotive technology. It engaged with some of the leading companies in Silicon Valley and highlighted customer collaborations on GPU, PCIe Gen4 and HBM2e technologies.

Samsung to fix the Galaxy Note 10 and S10 fingerprint flaw within 24 hours

Samsung recently acknowledged the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor flaw that has been widely reported on over the past week. The company confirmed that it was working on a software fix that would be rolled out in the coming days.

The company has already rolled out this fix for eligible devices in South Korea. Samsung has also issued a notice through its Samsung Members app confirming that this fix will be rolled out within 24 hours.

Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 fingerprint flaw fix will be out in 24 hours

The flaw only affects users that have a certain kind of silicone cover installed on their Galaxy Note 10 or Galaxy S10 series device, the kind that cover the front too. Those who don’t use such a case need not worry. The textured surface on the inside of the cover can be recognized as a fingerprint when they’re first registered on the device. So anyone can just press down on the sensor and it would pick up that pattern and unlock the device.

Samsung has put out a notice which details how the fix is going to be rolled out. Users will receive an update notification titled “Biometrics update,” and they just have to tap on Update when it arrives. Once the update is installed, users are advised to remove the cover and delete all fingerprints previously registered on the device. The fingerprints are then to be registered once again without a cover applied. Users should ensure that their fingerprint is scanned in its entirety.

The company adds that the notification for a new update will only be sent to devices that have fingerprints registered. This notification will be sent within 24 hours to Galaxy Note 10, Note 10+, Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10 5G devices. No notifications will be sent to devices that don’t have fingerprints registered. This notification can’t be removed until the update is installed. What this means is that the update isn’t going to be a full system OTA.

We’ve already seen reports of this notice appearing in Samsung Members for users in the United States, Canada and in markets across Europe. It’s only a matter of hours now before this fix is rolled out to eligible devices.

Thanks, @theonecid!

Galaxy S10 and Note 10 fingerprint issue fixed in South Korea

Samsung has rolled out a fresh software update for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 5G lineups in South Korea, fixing the fingerprint sensor security issue that was discovered a little over a week ago, reveals a recent Reuters report. The update’s availability is seemingly limited to the South Korean market for the time being.

Galaxy S10 and Note 10 fingerprint sensor fix is on its way

The fingerprint sensor security flaw affects the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series across all the markets, regardless of which chipset they use. The issue prompted several banking institutions in the UK and China to temporarily disable their banking apps on Samsung’s flagship phones until the matter is addressed.

The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G received a second monthly security patch last week and we were hoping that it may contain a fix for the fingerprint issue. The changelog mentioned fingerprint recognition improvements but the company didn’t offer any other details. It turns out that the update in question wasn’t related to the fingerprint sensor flaw, but if a fix is rolling out in South Korea as we speak then it probably won’t take long for the software package to spread worldwide.

Once the update starts expanding into more markets, it will be up to the banking institutions that have disabled the fingerprint sensor in their apps to decide when they can restore their services back to normal. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out more.

Latest Galaxy Watch Active 2 update fixes screen flickering bug

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is getting a new software update carrying the build number R820XXU1BSJ6. It fixes a screen flickering bug that can occur when users return to the Watch Always On mode. We haven’t run into this issue ourselves, so it’s probably not too widespread, but if you have experienced this problem with your wearable then you might want to keep an eye out for this release.

Aside from the aforementioned fix, the update also improves language support for Samsung Health features, but the changelog doesn’t detail what this entails, exactly.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 experience improves with a new update

Samsung had begun rolling out the Galaxy Watch Active 2 update with build number R820XXU1BSJ6 a couple of days ago and availability continues to expand. The package weighs a little under 14MB, or just about as much as the R820XXU1BSI9 update weighted when it landed in the US last month, pushing the version of Tizen OS up to 4.0.0.7.

The update will present a notification on your connected phone once it will be ready for your wearable. You can also verify if the update is available for your Galaxy Watch Active 2 by launching the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone and accessing About Watch. You can then tap Update Watch software and Update now to confirm.

Samsung releases October security patch for the Galaxy A2, M10, A6+ and J7 (2018)

Samsung has released the October 2019 security patch for the Galaxy A2 Core, M10, A6+, and J7 (2018). These devices have started receiving the said update in the last couple of days in select markets. It’s heartening to see the Korean tech giant bring the latest security patch to these mostly old and low-cost models.

The update for the Galaxy A2 is currently rolling out in India, while the M10 is receiving the same in the Philippines. The Galaxy A6+, meanwhile, is getting it in Poland and the Galaxy J7 (2018) in Puerto Rico and the US. Unfortunately, there is no pattern in Samsung’s rollout of software updates for low-end devices, so it’s difficult to predict the markets where this release will be made available.

According to Samsung, the October 2019 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) includes, among other things, Google’s patches for five critical and more than a dozen high-level Android vulnerabilities. It also includes Samsung’s patches for 17 vulnerabilities that are specific to Galaxy devices. We currently don’t know if the update brings any new features to these devices, but it’s doubtful going by the past experience.

If you own one of these devices but haven’t received the OTA notification yet, you can manually check for it by going to Settings and tapping the Download updates manually option under the Software Update menu. If that doesn’t work, you can search on our firmware database to see if your device has received a newer firmware and manually flash it if it’s available. You can find the firmware for the Galaxy A2 Core here, M10 here, A6+ here, and J7 (2018) here.

US unlocked Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 receive October 2019 security patch

The unlocked Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 are now receiving a new software update in the United States featuring the  October 2019 security patch. The changelog doesn’t mention any additional features and/or changes.

The latest software packages for the unlocked Galaxy S8, S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 are identified by build numbers G950U1UES6DSJ1, G955U1UES6DSJ1, and N950U1UES6DSI3, respectively.

October 2019 security patch has landed, but no new features mentioned

Samsung detailed the October 2019 security patch a couple of weeks ago and, as usual, the package aims to fix a number of security vulnerabilities, 17 of which are Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposure (SVE) items. However, the update doesn’t seem to include fixes for the critical Android OS vulnerability that’s been reported to target a few Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S8 series. These issues are likely to be addressed with the November 2019 security patch instead.

As usual, the update should be accompanied by a notification that users can tap to download and install the latest software version to their phones. Alternatively, you can click the following links and check our firmware pages for the unlocked Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 in the US. You can download the firmware manually and install it on your phone using your computer.

One UI 2.0 feature focus: Set stricter Wireless PowerShare battery limit

Reverse wireless charging may not be a feature everyone uses, but it can be very handy when you want to charge other mobile devices with your smartphone. With Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 10, you can charge your wearables, like your Galaxy/Gear smartwatch or the Galaxy Buds, overnight using your phone. You can also help a friend in need if they’re running low on battery charge on their smartphone (as long as it supports wireless charging).

When Wireless PowerShare was introduced on the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung built in a sensible limit to just how long your phone could charge another device: Reverse wireless charging stopped when the charge on the phone dropped to 30 percent. However, 30 percent can be a bit too low for a device like the Galaxy S10e or the Galaxy Note 10, which have small batteries that can drain quickly if you use the phone to charge other devices. That is something Samsung is tackling with One UI 2.0 and Android 10.

Now set Wireless PowerShare to stop anywhere between 30% to 90% battery

On One UI 2.0, you have the option to specify the battery percentage that your phone can drop to before Wireless PowerShare stops charging the other device. You can set it anywhere from 30 to 90 percent, so just how much charge you want to share with other devices is totally up to you. We would recommend a limit equal to or higher than 50 percent unless you have a phone with a large battery (4,000 mAh+), like the Galaxy S10+, Galaxy Note 10+, or Galaxy Fold.

The battery limit can be changed from the Wireless PowerShare menu, which can be accessed by dragging down the notification shade twice, tapping the Wireless PowerShare text underneath its toggle (not the toggle itself, as that will simply turn the feature on and off), and tapping the Details button (see the GIF above). You can also access PowerShare settings from the Device care » Battery » Wireless PowerShare section in the Settings app.

You can discover more of what is new in One UI 2.0 in our One UI 2.0 feature focus series of articles and in the video below. To see all the improvements and changes it brings to the core One UI interface, check out our in-depth screenshot comparison.

Galaxy Tab S6 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 now available from T-Mobile

The Galaxy Tab S6 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 may be the latest products in Samsung’s tablet and smartwatch lineups, but they were announced nearly three months back and have been available for purchase in markets around the world for some time. North American carrier T-Mobile seemed to have forgotten all about the two devices, however, as it is only now putting them up for sale through its network, as spotted by the folks over at TmoNews.

The Galaxy Tab S6 is priced at $725 for the LTE variant in the Mountain Gray paint job and with 128GB of storage. That’s the only variant the carrier is selling at this moment, although that could change in the near future. Those not willing to pay the full price upfront can opt for a two-year contract that requires a $29 down payment and then $29 every month thereafter. Both the off- and on-contract pricing is pretty good for the hardware you’re getting on the Galaxy Tab S6, which is the best Android tablet you can find on the market this year.

samsung galaxy tab s6 5g

We can’t say the same about the Galaxy Watch Active 2, as we still prefer the Galaxy Watch with its physical rotating bezel instead of the virtual bezel on the GWA2. That said, it’s got all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a smartwatch and comes in two sizes (40 mm and 44 mm). The 40 mm version can be yours for $429.99 upfront or $17.92 monthly on a two-year contract, while the 44 mm model will cost you $449.99 and $18.75 upfront and on-contract respectively. Both sizes can be purchased in gold, silver, and black.

You can grab the Galaxy Tab S6 from T-Mobile’s website here, the 40 mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 here, and the 44 mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 here.

Galaxy A80 gets a price cut in India barely three months after its launch

Samsung has slashed the price of the Galaxy A80 in India to Rs. 39,990 (~$563) in time for the festive season. The premium midranger went on sale in the country on August 1 with a price tag of Rs. 47,990 (~$675), placing it well above the flagships from OnePlus, Asus, and others at the time of its launch. Even with the price cut, the Galaxy A80 may be a tough sell in the fiercely-competitive Indian smartphone market.

The Galaxy A80 is already listed at the reduced price on online marketplaces such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Paytm Mall. Offline retailers have also confirmed the price cut to local media outlets. Samsung India, however, hasn’t made any official comment so far. Given that the device is listed at the new price across online and offline retailers, it indeed appears to be a price cut by the company.

To recall, the Galaxy A80 comes with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED notch-less New Infinity Display, Snapdragon 730G SoC, 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, 3,700mAh battery, 25W fast charging, and Android Pie onboard. Its main USP, however, is the triple camera module on the back that can slide and rotate to double up as a selfie shooter.

We were not impressed with the Galaxy A80 in our review, mainly due to its complicated camera slider and the Sound on Display technology. The price cut doesn’t change any of that. On the contrary, it makes early adopters of the Galaxy A80 feel short-changed to see their device price drop in less than three months after its launch.

[Poll] Will you participate in Galaxy S10 or Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta program?

There’s been plenty of confusion over the One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. Samsung hasn’t been able to stick to schedule and has delayed the release of both the Galaxy S10 Android 10 beta and the Galaxy Note 10 beta. Of course, in the company’s defense, it never really said anything concrete about when the Galaxy Note 10 beta program would start. Sure, its customer care representatives did, but as we’ve seen on many occasions, Samsung’s customer care can be woefully uninformed about matters of software updates.

The Galaxy S10 beta program is already live in the US, Germany, and South Korea and will expand to other markets soon, and it won’t be long before the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are brought into the fold as well. Many of you are no doubt getting impatient waiting for your chance to try out Android 10 and One UI 2.0, while some of you might just be watching from the sidelines and would prefer updating directly to the stable release, whenever that comes out. For others, the beta may not even be an option because it won’t be made available in their country. Which of those camps do you fall in? That’s what we want to know through our latest poll!

Go ahead and vote below, then feel free to expand on your answer in the comments section.

Second Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy S10 is coming soon

Samsung has just dropped a hint through one of its app updates that the second Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy S10 could start rolling out soon. The changelog for an update to the Samsung Video Library app on the Galaxy Store mentions only one thing: Support S10 Q OS 2nd Beta UT. The fact that Samsung is still calling Android 10 ‘Q’ aside, this is as good a sign as any that the second beta update is on its way.

The update could be released tomorrow, when the One UI 2.0 beta program debuts for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ and the Galaxy S10 beta program is expanded to more markets. The markets in the second phase — Poland, France, Spain, the UK, India, and China — are likely to get the second beta update as the first release, although that is just speculation based on how Samsung tackled the Android Pie beta last year. It’s also not guaranteed that the second beta update will arrive tomorrow, but it should certainly be out before the end of the week.

Interestingly, Samsung is updating some of its apps separately for Android 10. Samsung Video Library is one such app, having a separate changelog for those on Android Pie, and so is Samsung Internet. Version 11 of Samsung Internet is currently available for Galaxy devices on Android 10 (basically just the Galaxy S10 series at this time) via the Galaxy Store, although those on Android Pie can also use the newer version by grabbing its APK file and sideloading it on their device, as long as it is an Exynos-powered model and not a Snapdragon one.
