Do the Galaxy Buds 2 feature 360-degree Audio like the Galaxy Buds Pro?

Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds Pro about six months ago and it immediately became clear that they were the best earbuds yet from Samsung. They brought improvements for the listening experience, added ANC to a familiar Samsung earbud design, and more.

There was another feature that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Buds Pro that we haven’t seen so far on any of the company’s earbuds. The 360-degree Audio feature significantly enhanced the audio experience on the company’s earbuds.

Galaxy Buds 2 are Samsung’s second new earbuds release this year

The 360-degree spatial audio feature with Dolby Head Tracking technology delivers an incredible immersive audio experience. The company advertised that this feature helps deliver “theater-like” sound on the Galaxy Buds Pro. As we highlighted in our Galaxy Buds Pro review, 360-degree Audio really works as advertised.

You can feel which direction the sound is coming from when you move your head. It’s important to note that the 360-degree Audio feature only works when the Galaxy Buds Pro are being used with a Samsung Galaxy device.

Samsung has now come out with a new pair of wireless earbuds. The Galaxy Buds 2 are quite similar to the Galaxy Buds Pro. There are more similarities than differences in these earbuds. It’s particularly great that at $150, the Galaxy Buds 2 are actually $50 cheaper than the Galaxy Buds Pro.

So what did Samsung take away to reduce the cost? You guessed it, 360-degree Audio. The Galaxy Buds 2 don’t feature 360-degree spatial audio. It may not necessarily have been a cost thing. Samsung wouldn’t have wanted to cannibalize the sales of the Galaxy Buds Pro.

So it had to leave something out. The company probably felt that 360-degree audio was the safest feature it could cut without reducing the appeal of the new earbuds for customers.

We tend to agree with that assessment. At $150 and with the features that it provides, such as Active Noise Cancellation, the Galaxy Buds 2 deliver incredible value for money.

Don’t even try using a regular S Pen with the Galaxy Z Fold 3!

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first foldable phone to offer S Pen support, but as you may already know, it doesn’t work with just any S Pen. Samsung explained why the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is only compatible with the S Pen Fold Edition and the S Pen Pro, but what you might not know is that using any other type of S Pen with the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 could damage its foldable display.

It’s not an exaggeration or something related to software. Rather, the tip design of a regular S Pen can cause permanent physical damage to the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable screen, and that’s with the new protective film claiming 80% more durability.

The S Pen Fold Edition and Pro have special retractable tips

To work around this inherent durability problem of the foldable display, Samsung developed the “Pro Tips” for the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. These new tips are softer than the regular ones, but more importantly, they have a retractable mechanism that prevents damage to the foldable screen when pressure is applied.

No other S Pen models have these characteristics, and without them, they would damage the foldable screen. In other words, even if third parties could tweak the software and make the Galaxy Z Fold 3 work with any S Pens — something that’s likely impossible — it would be a dangerous mix.

All this said, if you will buy a Galaxy Z Fold 3 and you have a regular S Pen laying around, don’t even try using it with the foldable display unless you want to risk permanent hardware damage. Alternatively, you can buy the S Pen Fold Edition (without a case) from Samsung for $49.99 and/or the S Pen Pro for $99.99. Or you can pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and get the Note Pack with an S Pen case included, though availability might differ by region.

Here’s why the Galaxy Z Flip 3 doesn’t have an under-display camera

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is Samsung’s first-ever smartphone to boast UDC (Under-Display Camera) technology. And although the Z Fold 3 got announced at the same event as another foldable Galaxy phone, UDC technology remains exclusive to the larger model. It isn’t available for the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Samsung reps explained why, and apparently, it has to do with the form factor. Or rather, the fact that the large 7.6-inch foldable display is more fit for Under-Display Camera technology, while selfies are a more important aspect of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 user’s day-to-day life. Implying, in a way, that the UDC doesn’t match the capabilities of the 10MP selfie camera fitted on the Galaxy Z Flip series.

UDC will probably come to the Galaxy Z Flip series, one day

Samsung has a point. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a better fit for UDC technology because the phone’s already equipped with a standard selfie camera atop the cover display. UDC is great for immersive experiences when watching videos or playing mobile games. And even if it can’t deliver decent selfie stills, users will gravitate more towards the external selfie camera anyway. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s selfie camera is geared more towards exactly that: taking selfies.

Nevertheless, the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s cover display is larger than last year, clocking in at 1.9 inches. It can essentially be used as a viewfinder, and we could argue that the Z Flip 3 is just as fit for UDC technology as the Z Fold 3, at least in regards to having a backup selfie camera on the outside.

With that in mind, we suspect that Samsung will eventually bring UDC to the Galaxy Z Flip series one day, and perhaps one other reason it was left out this year was to reach a sub $1,000 launch price. Whatever the case may be, for now, the technology doesn’t seem to be ready to replace standard selfie cameras in all use cases.

Meet the new S Pen Pro, the bridge that gaps foldable and regular phones

Samsung won’t release any new Galaxy Note models this year, but the company’s making up for it with the S Pen Pro and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung teased the S Pen Pro earlier this year but held off from launching it until the August Galaxy Unpacked event. There’s a good reason for this, and once you learn all about the S Pen Pro, you’ll know why it wouldn’t have made any sense for Samsung to bring it to the market before now.

The S Pen Pro is compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 but isn’t bound to the foldable device — unlike the S Pen Fold Edition. On the contrary. The S Pen Pro is meant to bridge the gap between the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s unique digitizer and other Galaxy devices that support the S Pen.

What’s the purpose of the S Pen Pro, and how does it work?

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t work with regular S Pens because the foldable screen required a unique digitizer — the layer that reads stylus inputs — so Samsung had to develop new S Pens for the device.

With that in mind, you can think of the S Pen Pro as an S Pen that has two different polarities — or modes — and a physical button to switch between them. The first mode works only with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and no other device. The second mode works with any other Galaxy smartphone and tablet that supports regular S Pens; However, it temporarily disables compatibility with the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

S Pen Pro users can switch from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to another Galaxy smartphone or tablet on the fly by flicking the switch at the top, as long as both Galaxy devices are signed in to the same Samsung account.

It makes sense then that Samsung didn’t release the S Pen Pro in the first half of 2021 — assuming it was even ready at that point. It’s meant for Galaxy Z Fold 3 owners who want to use an additional S Pen-enabled tablet or smartphone along with the foldable device.

What’s the S Pen Pro capable of, and what does it cost?

The S Pen Pro has an internal battery that recharges via a USB port at the top. It has Bluetooth LE, Air Commands and Air Actions support, and it can be located through SmartThings Find.

Samsung’s latest stylus measures 173.64mm in length and 9.5mm in diameter, and weighs 13.8 grams, which means it’s larger and heavier than a regular S Pen or the S Pen Fold Edition. It has a pairing button and an LED indicator, and it features a new “Pro Tip,” which is softer and retracts slightly under pressure to protect the foldable display.

The S Pen Pro will be available for purchase from Samsung for $99.99, and unless you buy it along with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 Thom Browne Edition, you won’t find it in any other color besides black.

Galaxy Buds 2 vs Galaxy Buds Pro: Get the best for $50 less

It’s only been six months since Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds Pro. The company today launched another pair of truly wireless earbuds called the Galaxy Buds 2. They can’t really be considered a successor of the former since there are quite a few similarities.

Many of the improvements that Samsung had introduced with the Galaxy Buds Pro are present on the Galaxy Buds 2. The great thing about them is that they actually cost less than the Pro model, that’s something customers will be happy about.

Galaxy Buds 2 vs Galaxy Buds Pro: Audio and call quality

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro support the Bluetooth 5.2 standard with AAC, SBC and Samsung Scalable Code. Like the Galaxy Buds Pro, they feature a dual-driver setup consisting of a woofer and tweeter. Another similarity is the three mic array with the voice pickup unit for clear calls.

Samsung’s latest earbuds also use a machine learning solution to make your conversations sound clearer than ever before. This is a new feature that the Buds 2 bring to the table. Both the Buds 2 and Pro feature Active Noise Cancellation with multiple ambient sound levels to enable you to hear the surrounding environment.

Galaxy Buds 2 vs Galaxy Buds Pro: Additional features

360-degree spatial audio is one of the biggest differences between these two earbuds. This feature is available on the Galaxy Buds Pro but not on the Galaxy Buds 2. 360-degree audio provides an immersive audio experience with Dolby Head Tracking Technology.

Both earbuds are capable of seamlessly switching between Samsung devices. Game Mode can be enabled to reduce latency. If you end up losing the Galaxy Buds 2, they can also be discovered via SmartThings Find much like the Buds Pro.

Galaxy Buds 2 vs Galaxy Buds Pro: Battery life and charging

The Galaxy Buds 2 can last for up to 7.5 hours with ANC disabled and 5 hours with it enabled. When combined with the charging case, the Galaxy Buds 2 has a battery life of up to 28 hours with ANC off and up to 20 hours with ANC on.

The Galaxy Buds Pro can last up to 8 hours (5 hours with ANC turned on) on a single charge, with the case providing an additional up to 20 hours of battery juice (13 hours with ANC turned on).

It goes without saying that the Galaxy Buds Pro are the best earbuds Samsung has launched so far. The Galaxy Buds 2 share a lot with them and at $150, are also $50 cheaper. Those who can part with the 360-degree audio will find it to be a better option. They’ll also appreciate the fact that the Galaxy Buds 2 are Samsung’s lightest and smallest wireless earbuds yet.

Check out the full Galaxy Buds 2 vs Galaxy Buds Pro specs comparison below. We’ll also have a full review of the Galaxy Buds 2 up in due course so stay tuned for that.

Does the S Pen work on both of the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s displays?

If there would be such a thing as “the expected unexpected,” it could be defined by how Samsung married up the S Pen and the Galaxy Z Fold series. Following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in August 2020 and the release of an S Pen for the Galaxy S21 Ultra in January, everyone expected the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to become the first in its series to support Samsung’s iconic input device. But not everyone was sure that Samsung’s foldable display has become strong enough to support the S Pen. However, Samsung certainly appears to have solved this puzzle, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G’s gorgeous 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display does indeed support the S Pen.

Or, more specifically, it supports two S Pen models, in particular. They’re new, and they’re called the “S Pen Fold Edition” and the “S Pen Pro.” But first of all, let’s address one thing before we do the titular question. Namely, that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 does not support any other S Pen models aside from the brand-new S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. There’s a reason for that, and it’s the same reason why the cover display doesn’t work with any S Pens at all — Fold Edition and Pro included.

The foldable display’s unique digitizer requires special S Pens

Samsung said on record that the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable display has a digitizer — the layer that enables S Pen inputs — which shouldn’t be used with any other S Pen models aside from the Fold Edition and Pro.

In other words, the foldable display requires a unique digitizer, and the same solution wouldn’t work if applied to the cover display. For the cover to work with an S Pen, it would need a normal digitizer, like the one you’d find on the Galaxy Note series or the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

And while the S Pen Pro is compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, as well as other Galaxy devices that offer S Pen support, there’s a trick to it. It has two modes — a Fold mode and a general-purpose mode — which can be selected through a switch at the top. So, in theory, Samsung could’ve made the S Pen Pro work with both the foldable and cover displays by giving the latter a regular digitizer. But then, the S Pen Fold Edition wouldn’t have been compatible with the cover display, and any other S Pen that would’ve worked with the cover screen wouldn’t have been compatible with the foldable display.

If it sounds confusing, that’s because it is, and it’s why Samsung decided to go the route it did. Instead of fitting the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with two types of digitizers that would require different S Pen models, Samsung decided to simplify things and keep the S Pen experience exclusive to the foldable display. Which, again, is compatible only with the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro.

And in all fairness, the S Pen experience probably wouldn’t translate too well on the tall 25:9 aspect ratio of the cover display anyway.

Want to get the most out of the new Galaxy Z Fold 3? Meet the Note Pack!

Samsung is well aware of the high entry barrier to foldable devices — after all, it’s Samsung who spent all that R&D money to develop foldable displays in the first place. Nevertheless, the company’s been working on lowering the price of foldables ever since the launch of the original Galaxy Fold. And with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung managed to bring the price down to $1,799 after shaving $200 off last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 price.

This is despite all of the improvements introduced with the new foldable flagship — things like water resistance, a more durable chassis, a brighter and stronger foldable display, an under-display camera, and the addition of S Pen support.

But as some of you may have already expected, given Samsung’s recent decisions, one of the ways in which the company brought the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s launch price down was by removing accessories from the retail box.

The new foldable phone doesn’t ship with a pair of earbuds or a wall charger, but Samsung is giving customers a USB-C port. Likewise, S Pen enthusiasts will have to buy the S Pen Fold Edition — with or without a case — or the S Pen Pro separately.

Alternatively, Galaxy Z Fold 3 buyers who’ll want some of these accessories will be able to save some cash by purchasing them in a bundle. Samsung’s offering one, and it’s calling it the Galaxy Z Fold 3 Note Pack.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 Note Pack comes with almost everything you need

The “Note Pack” name picked by Samsung for this bundle is not coincidental. It’s undeniably aimed at Galaxy Z Fold 3 customers who want to get more productive with their devices and add an S Pen into the mix.

The bundle includes a 25W wall charger and an S Pen Fan Edition paired with a case. Sadly, it doesn’t come with a pair of earbuds, but if you will be looking for an affordable solution, Samsung’s tried and tested AKG-branded USB-C wired earbuds are going to set you back an additional $29.99 on top of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 Note Pack’s price.

If purchased separately, a 25W Samsung wall charger costs $19.99 without a USB-C cord, while an S Pen Fold Edition costs $49.99 without the case.

Oh, and don’t forget; Galaxy Z Fold 3 pre-order customers in some countries get the Note Pack for free, so you might want to think ahead if you’ll end up buying these accessories later anyway.

Samsung just fixed the Android to iPhone WhatsApp data transfer problem

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that it might become easier to transfer WhatsApp from iPhone to Android. The world’s most widely used cross-platform messaging app didn’t offer an official feature to transfer chats from iOS to Android.

It recently emerged that the Facebook-owned company was working on a feature that would make it easier to take your WhatsApp chats from iPhone to an Android-powered smartphone. The feature has been officially confirmed today and it’s actually coming to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 first.

New foldables first to get the transfer WhatsApp from iPhone feature

It was confirmed by Samsung during its Unpacked event today that Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 customers will be able to transfer WhatsApp from iPhone to their new foldable devices. They will require the latest version of SmartSwitch and WhatsApp on their Galaxy device for the feature to work.

The iPhone must be running iOS 10 or higher otherwise the feature isn’t going to work. It’s also pertinent to note that the WhatsApp chats can only be migrated before it’s signed into the other device.

If the WhatsApp account is signed into on the new device before the migration is completed or before SmartSwitch is done transferring the data, the migration won’t be successful.

This feature obviously won’t be limited to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. WhatsApp is going to make this feature available to all devices running Android 10 and up in the coming months.

Nevertheless, this is a great incentive for iOS owners who might be considering a shift to a Samsung foldable smartphone. Many might be relying on WhatsApp and its useful features like WhatsApp Web to stay in touch with friends and family.

This feature will finally enable them to bring all of their chats over to an Android device without having to use a dubious third-party app.

While we’re on the subject of Samsung’s new foldables, do check out our Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 hands-on videos!

Check out the Galaxy Z Fold 3 under-display camera in action!

Under-display cameras are the ultimate solution to the dreaded notch/hole-punch design language that has plagued most modern-day smartphones. It is quite tricky to get right, as the light has to pass through an extra layer of glass. Image quality concerns aside, another concern around the tech is if it disrupts the all-screen look in a meaningful way. There’s only one way to find out.

Lo and behold, here’s the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera in action for the first time:

As you can see in the GIF above, the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-panel camera blends into the screen for the most part. Immersion shouldn’t be a problem, as your peripheral vision will almost certainly miss it while consuming content, just like how the crease isn’t noticeable most of the time on the Galaxy Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The image below shows how the module camouflages itself even when the rear cameras are engaged even within the camera app. Samsung has figured out how to keep the under-display sensor hidden unless the selfie camera is actively used.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 under display camera

As far as the actual image quality is concerned, you may have to wait a bit longer to see it in action. We know that the camera has a 4MP resolution, f 1.8 aperture and 2 microns pixel size. The large sensor size should somewhat compensate for the raw megapixel count. Watch out for our in-depth Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 review to find out how it fares in the real world.

Exynos or Snapdragon: What powers the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3?

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are the best foldables Samsung has launched yet, with amazing features such as water resistance, under-display cameras (only on the Z Fold 3), and better, more durable designs. As you would expect, they also sport flagship silicon under the hood, and many of you might be wondering exactly what chips are powering these foldables.

Is Samsung’s new Exynos chip with an AMD GPU finally here, or is Samsung using the Snapdragon 888+? Well, the answer is neither: The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are both powered by the Snapdragon 888, the same chip that powers the Galaxy S21 lineup.

Samsung’s latest foldables make use of not-so-latest (but still powerful) Snapdragon 888

Basically, Samsung is continuing the tradition of equipping its foldable devices with Snapdragon chips for all markets. However, the company is taking a step back from last year, when all of its flagships launched in the second half of the year (including the Galaxy Z Fold 2) came packing the Snapdragon 865+ chipset instead of the Snapdragon 865.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888+ earlier this year, but Samsung isn’t using the improved version of the 888 on its new foldables. The Snapdragon 888 is still plenty powerful, though, so we’re sure no one is going to mind, especially given how both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 reduce the price of entry compared to Samsung’s existing folding phones.

When it comes to memory, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is equipped with 12GB of RAM whether you buy the 256GB storage variant or the one with 512GB. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, on the other hand, has the option of 128GB and 256GB storage and gets 8GB of RAM on both. Expandable storage is not an option, which is to be expected as their predecessors didn’t support it, either.

What is Samsung’s new Under-Display Camera tech and how effective is it?

Samsung’s mobile phones went full circle, from not having a front-facing camera more than a decade ago, to having one, to having an Infinity cutout or notch, and back to not having a front-facing camera. At least in appearance. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is Samsung’s first mobile device to feature a UDC, or Under-Display Camera, which might be good enough to fool some people into believing that the new flagship doesn’t have a selfie camera paired with the foldable display. But people who will be fooled by this new trick either don’t follow mobile news or haven’t had internet access for years, as UDC technology has been in the news for a long time now.

But let’s take a step back and answer the basic question. What is UDC/Under-Display Camera technology? Well, it’s something that allows Samsung to hide a selfie camera behind the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable display and thus provide a more immersive experience through the 7.6-inch foldable panel. Here’s what makes it possible.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 UDC (Under-Display Camera) specifications

As far as on-paper specifications go, Samsung’s first UDC/Under-Display Camera isn’t all that impressive. It’s a 4MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and an 80 degrees field of view. Nothing special so far, but the sensor does have quite large 2-micron pixels, which means they can capture more light — something needed when the sensor is hidden behind a display.

And although 4MP sounds like too low of a resolution for a selfie camera in 2021 — or even 2017 — let’s keep in mind that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is not a run-of-the-mill smartphone. It already has a proper selfie camera atop the cover display, so the purpose of the Under-Display Camera is not to deliver cutting-edge quality but to stay hidden when watching videos, playing mobile games, and in other cases that take advantage of the foldable screen’s large footprint for an immersive experience.

The other component that makes UDC possible is the display cutout. Yes, the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable panel still has an Infinity-O cutout, though it only becomes visible when the display is sleeping. This brings us to the next and final point.

How hidden is the Galaxy Z Fold 3 UDC (Under-Display Camera)?

In short, it’s more or less noticeable depending on a couple of factors, such as viewing angle and the brightness of the display area covering the UDC, but it does more than a decent job.

You could say that still photos don’t make Samsung’s UDC technology justice, especially when captured at the correct — or worst — angles. In this sense, the Under-Display Camera is sort of like the foldable display’s crease. It’s more visible from some angles than others.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 under display camera

The brightness of the foldable display — or specifically, the area covering the UDC — is another key factor that plays into the sensor’s visibility. The brighter the screen, the more hidden the Under-Display Camera will be. The side effect is that the UDC sensor and the Infinity-O cutout become almost clearly visible when the screen is sleeping or when the image is dark. It’s technically the same thing, as far as the AMOLED display’s pixels are concerned.

Keep in mind that AMOLED screens achieve deeper black levels by shutting off individual pixels, so if the image around the UDC is pitch-black, the pixels shut off and the Infinity-O cutout becomes a lot more noticeable — almost to the level of a regular Infinity-O selfie camera from any other Galaxy smartphone.

At the end of the day, it’s the first generation Under-Display Camera from Samsung, and so far, it looks like a very promising and viable, albeit imperfect, technology. And it’s by far the most exciting camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which has a total of five.

Galaxy Buds 2 go official with noise cancellation at more affordable price

Alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the Galaxy Watch 4 series, Samsung has also unveiled the Galaxy Buds 2. They succeed the Galaxy Buds+ and bring ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) at a more affordable price compared to the Galaxy Buds Pro.

The Galaxy Buds 2’s design is clearly inspired by the Galaxy Buds Pro rather than the Galaxy Buds+. It means that the earbuds have a rounder design and the case has a rounded rectangular shape. They are IPX2-certified for water splash resistance. The Galaxy Buds 2 feature a Bluetooth 5.2 chip with SBC, AAC, and SSC (Samsung Scalable Codecs) audio codecs. They come in four colors: Graphite, Lavender, Olive, and White.

Similar to the Galaxy Buds+, the Galaxy Buds 2 feature a dual-driver setup (11m woofer and 6.3mm tweeter) and AKG tuning for rich audio. They also feature six microphones (three on each earbud) that help in actively canceling background noise while listening to music and making calls. You can switch between three modes: ANC On, ANC Off, and Transparency. The earbuds feature an IR sensor for wear detection so that music can be paused when you remove the Galaxy Buds 2 from your ears.

The VPU (Voice Pickup Unit) inside the earbuds uses the accelerometer and the gyro to detect whether you are talking. When you are talking to someone nearby, the Galaxy Buds 2 can automatically switch to Transparency mode so that you can converse freely. Once you’re done talking, the earbuds switch back to ANC On mode. Of course, you can turn this feature off. The earbuds have capacitive touch sensors for gestures and music playback controls. You can further customize audio and touch controls using the Galaxy Wearable smartphone app.

The earbuds feature 61mAh batteries, while the case comes packed with a 472mAh battery. The earbuds last up to 7.5 hours when ANC is turned off and 5 hours when ANC is turned on. Combined with the case, the Galaxy Buds 2 can last up to 28 hours when ANC is turned off and up to 20 hours when ANC is turned on. The case features a USB Type-C port and Qi wireless charging. A 5-minute charge can last up to an hour.

The Galaxy Buds 2 cost just $150, which makes them $50 cheaper than the Galaxy Buds Pro. However, they still come packed with the Galaxy Buds Pro’s most important feature: ANC. Despite the lack of features like 360-degree audio, the Galaxy Buds 2 offer a brilliant feature set for their price. You can buy them starting August 27, 2021.

Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic go official: Wear OS 3, Exynos W920, and more

The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have finally gone official. They are Samsung’s first Wear OS 3-based smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 4 is the spiritual successor to the Galaxy Watch Active 2, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic succeeds the Galaxy Watch 3. They have the potential to become the industry’s best smartwatches for Android smartphones, thanks to the combination of excellent hardware and Wear OS.

Both new smartwatches feature a circular Super AMOLED display and a metal casing. The Galaxy Watch 4 is available in 40mm and 44mm variants, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic comes in 42mm and 46mm variants. The smaller-sized versions have 1.19-inch screens with 396 x 396 pixels resolution. The larger-sized variants have 1.36-inch displays with 450 x 450 pixels resolution.

Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic use Samsung’s brand new 5nm Exynos W920 processor

The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic come equipped with Samsung’s brand new Exynos W920 processor that is built using a 5nm process. This processor should offer them a huge boost in terms of processing power, which would be required to smoothly run thousands of Wear OS apps. The smartwatches feature 1.5GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

They also feature GPS and various sensors, including an accelerometer, a barometer, a compass, a gyro, and a heart rate sensor for activity and fitness tracking. Both smartwatches have ECG (electrocardiogram) and can measure body fat composition. These wearables can also track sleep, SpO2 levels, stress, and also notify you if you were snoring while sleeping. Similar to previous-generation watches, the Galaxy Watch 4 series features fall detection.

Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is for those who love rotating bezels

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic features the fan-favorite rotating bezel, which can be used to navigate around the UI. The Galaxy Watch 4 has an aluminum case, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic has a stainless steel casing. Both watches also feature an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance (up to 5 ATM). The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are compatible with standard-sized 20mm watch straps.

Connectivity features of these smartwatches include Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, and NFC. They support Samsung’s Auto Switch feature for Galaxy Buds. They will also be available in LTE variants. The smartwatches also allow users to switch between ANC On (Active Noise Cancellation), ANC Off, and Ambient Sound features when compatible Galaxy Buds are connected. The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic can take calls, thanks to the presence of a mic and loudspeaker.

Galaxy Watch 4 series runs One UI Watch 3 on top of Wear OS 3

Samsung’s new smartwatches run One UI Watch 3 on top of Wear OS 3. Samsung’s customizations on top of Wear OS 3 allow users to easily install and manage apps, sync data between phone and smartwatch versions of the apps, and choose between Bixby and Google Assistant. The smartwatches also feature Google Play Store, which makes them compatible with all the Wear OS apps, watch faces, and games.

Speaking of watch faces, the Galaxy Watch 4 series comes with a lot of new watch faces that are extremely customizable. Google Maps, Google Pay, Spotify, and YouTube Music apps come preloaded on the smartwatches.

The smaller variants of the smartwatches are powered by a 247mAh battery, while the larger variants come packed with a 361mAh battery. Both smartwatches are compatible with Qi wireless charging, and they come bundled with a wireless charging adapter.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 official as world’s first water-resistant foldable phone

Samsung’s third-generation flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, is finally official, following months of what seemed like endless leaks and rumors. And what a device it is – Samsung has packed it with a number of features no one expected to see on foldable devices so soon, along with giving it mostly flagship-grade specs to make it worthy of the asking price.

Water resistance, S Pen support, and under-display camera make this a special device

First up is, of course, the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is water resistant. It’s got an IPX8 certification, which means it can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes and come out of the ordeal without any damage (though we wouldn’t recommend testing this out in the real world). That’s the same level of protection you find on Samsung’s Galaxy S and Note flagships, making it an impressive feat.

Dust resistance, unfortunately, hasn’t made the cut. However, the Z Fold 2’s and Z Flip 3’s vacuum cleaner-like sweeper technology, which puts nylon bristles inside the hinge to sweep dust away, is present on the Z Fold 3 as well. The design is also stronger thanks to what Samsung is calling Armor Aluminum, its “toughest strongest aluminum frame” yet.

Then there’s the under-display camera. Due to the nature of the folding display, the cameras on the inner screens on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices are placed in an awkward location that affects the user experience, so Samsung has made it invisible, so to speak. There’s a 4MP camera hiding underneath the 7.6-inch foldable display that gets out of the way when you’re not taking photos or making video calls. And don’t worry – the UPC camera has a fairly large pixel size of 2 microns to make up for the low resolution so it should offer respectable image quality.

The third big feature on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the reason why Samsung will try to pass it off as a Note replacement, is S Pen support. The Z Fold 3 supports stylus input on its main screen and comes with a S Pen specifically designed for it (this S Pen won’t work on other Galaxy devices, nor with the other S Pens work with the Fold 3). There’s no Bluetooth or gesture functionality on the Z Fold 3’s S Pen, but you can get that on the newly announced S Pen Pro. In case you’re wondering, the cover display doesn’t support S Pen input.

Samsung’s made plenty of enhancements to the software experience. With the S Pen, for example, you can jot down notes on the lower half of the screen while watching videos on the top half. Multi Active Window, which lets you run two apps side by side, now works with many more apps. A new ‘Drag & Split’ feature enables smoother transition between to split screen/Multi Active Window, and the Navigation Rail inside apps makes access to important functions easy to access by putting them on the side of the screen.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 gets brighter screens, same old cameras

Samsung has also made numerous improvements to the displays on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The 7.6-inch main screen now has a protection film that’s 80% stronger, and it’s 29% brighter than the Z Fold 2’s display. The 6.2-inch cover screen is also 29% brighter than before, but more importantly, it sports a 120Hz refresh rate. Flex Mode is here, as well, so you can keep the screen open at an angle. As expected, Gorilla Glass Victus protects both the front and back of the device.

Gorilla Glass — Gorilla Glass DX, which is what Samsung uses on its smartwatches — also covers the rear cameras for higher scratch and shatter resistance. Sadly, the rear cameras themselves have remained more or less unchanged from before. There’s a 12MP F1.8 main camera that features Dual Pixel autofocus and optical image stabilization, and it is accompanied by a 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 12MP 2x F2.4 telephoto camera. On the cover display, there’s a 10MP camera for selfies and video calls – this is also the same sensor as before, so it lacks any form of autofocus.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also misses out on the latest and greatest Snapdragon silicon. It is powered by the Snapdragon 888, same as the Galaxy S21 series, instead of the Snapdragon 888+. Thankfully, there’s 12GB of RAM as standard, along with 256GB and 512GB of non-expandable UFS 3.1 storage. The battery is a little smaller, too, at 4,400 mAh, and fast charging speeds still max out at 25W. Other features include a side fingerprint sensor mounted on the power button, stereo speakers, and two physical SIM slots in addition to an eSIM.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 arrives August 27 for $1799.99

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will hit retail shelves worldwide on August 27th for a price of $1799.99 for the base variant (12GB+256GB) and $1899.99 for the 12GB+512GB variant, with pre-orders starting today from Samsung.com. Color options will include Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver. The Z Fold S Pen, which is a separate purchase, will cost $49.99, while the S Pen Pro comes in at $99.99.

Galaxy Z Flip 3 goes official with water resistant design, bigger cover display

Alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 3 today as its second clamshell foldable phone. Plenty of leaks and rumors have led to this moment, and, as expected, nothing Samsung revealed came as a big surprise, or any surprise at all. Still, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has plenty of cool stuff to offer, including a considerably more attractive starting price than its predecessor.

Galaxy Z Flip 3 is more stunning, has more features, and costs less

The Galaxy Z Flip 3’s design is perhaps the most interesting thing about it. The phone is IPX8-certified for water resistance, and it’s made of stronger aluminum for higher durability and features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. Samsung has also made the cover screen larger – it’s now 1.9 inches in size instead of 1.1 inches and can show more content as a result. And the phone now has a dual-tone design, courtesy of a blacked out frame no matter which color you might pick up.

Samsung has also introduced two much needed features – the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 120Hz refresh rate on its main screen for a smoother viewing experience and stereo speakers for better sound. It remains to be seen how long the phone will last on a single charge with the high refresh rate enabled, as the battery is still a 3,300 mAh unit (that charges at 15W), but we’re hopeful the 5nm Snapdragon 888’s increased efficiency will help things along.

And, well, the rest of the package is not that different than the Z Flip. The 7.6-inch folding display is 29% brighter than before and has a standard selfie camera (10MP F2.4) instead of an under-display solution, and it doesn’t support S Pen input. The dual rear cameras include 12MP regular and 12MP ultra-wide cameras, with Gorilla Glass DX protecting them from damage. 5G connectivity comes as standard, and so does 8GB of RAM whether you buy the 128GB storage variant or the 256GB variant.

The Z Flip 3 runs Android 11 with One UI 3.1.1 out of the box, as expected. It will be supported for three Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates, which is the norm for all new flagship devices from Samsung. Speaking of software, Samsung has worked with more developers to make Flex Mode work with a wider variety of apps (for example, Google Duo can automatically zoom in and out to fit everyone inside the frame).

Galaxy Z Flip 3 pre-orders start today

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 will arrive on retail shelves on August 27th in green, lavender, and Phantom Black for $999.99 for the base variant, and $1099.99 for the 256GB model. Samsung also has three custom colors for those who pre-order it from Samsung.com: grey, pink, and white. Pre-orders open today itself, will come with different gifts depending on your country, and will be delivered by August 20th in some markets.

Galaxy Tab S6 nabs the August 2021 security update

The Galaxy Tab S6 just nabbed the August 1st, 2021 security update, right in time for its second birthday. Owners of Samsung’s 2019 tablet should be on the lookout for a firmware upgrade labeled as the release T865XXOS4CUG1. The said firmware version has so far been spotted in Germany and Samsung’s home country of South Korea.

In other words, this particular rollout has already gone global, so you likely won’t have to wait long for the August patch level to reach you, no matter where in the world you’re located. The firmware will most likely be available worldwide by the end of the month, based on established precedent.

Two years in, the Galaxy Tab S6 is as secure as ever

But just in case you want to speed things up a bit anyway, head over to Settings Software update Download and install. Tap that final option and see if you can trigger the download on your own. Assuming it’s already available in your area, that is. And alternatively, our firmware archives are here at your disposal, ready as ever. But if you end up going the manual flashing route, try to remember to back up your device.

As for the tablet at hand, the Galaxy Tab S6 is roughly halfway through its lifespan by now. Although given Samsung’s astonishing momentum on the software support front, we wouldn’t be surprised if that half is closer to a third. Either way, I genuinely envy you if you happen to be an owner of one of these; I sure could have used it last week.
