You can now ask Bixby for the next Galaxy Unpacked event’s date

Samsung is all set to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Watch 4 series, and the Galaxy Buds 2 next month. While the company hasn’t officially revealed the date for its next Galaxy Unpacked event, it has hidden an easter egg inside Bixby which can help you in knowing the event’s date.

When you ask Bixby “when is the next Unpacked?”, it shows you a pattern and asks you to listen carefully. Sometimes, Bixby also asks “can you crack the code?”. It is a morse code (.- ..- –. ..- … – / .—- .—-) and it translates to August 11. Hence, we can be sure that Samsung will unveil its next set of smartphones, smartwatches, and truly wireless earbuds on August 11, 2021.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are expected to bring the Snapdragon 888 processor, improved designs with an official IP rating, and lower price tags. The Galaxy Buds 2 is expected to bring ANC (active noise cancellation) at a lower price tag than the Galaxy Buds Pro. The Galaxy Watch 4 series will feature an advanced 5nm processor and Google’s Wear OS.

Here’s the first glimpse of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked August 2021 event invite

Samsung is ready to unveil two new foldable phones, two smartwatches, and truly wireless earbuds next month. It was revealed two days ago that the company’s next Galaxy Unpacked event would happen on August 11, 2021. Now, the first glimpse of the event invite’s video has been revealed.

A GIF animation related to Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event invite was leaked by MySmartPrice (in collaboration with tipster Ishan Agarwal). The animation shows a horizon-like structure, which then transforms into a silhouette that looks like a foldable device is getting unfolded. It could be hinting towards the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The report states that this video will be accompanied by the event’s tagline, “Get Ready to Unfold”. Samsung will host its upcoming event at 2 PM GMT (10 AM EST / 7.30 PM IST). The company is expected to unveil the date and time for the next Galaxy Unpacked event soon through its social media accounts and teaser videos.

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Buds 2,  and the Galaxy Watch 4 series during its next event. Both upcoming foldable devices are expected to feature improved hardware and lower price tags. The Galaxy Buds 2 will feature ANC, while the Galaxy Watch 4 series will run Google’s Wear OS.

Galaxy J8 gets access to June 2021 security update

While dozens of Samsung devices have already received the July 2021 security update, the Galaxy J8 is just now getting the June 2021 security update. However, the mid-range smartphone was released in 2018, and it is now three years old, and it is heartening to see Samsung updating once every few months.

The Galaxy J8 has started getting a new software update in Caucasus countries, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. It carries firmware version J810FJXU5CUF2 and includes the June 2021 security patch. In its security update documentation, Samsung mentioned that the June 2021 patch fixes close to four dozen security vulnerabilities in its Galaxy devices. Don’t expect this update to bring any new UI changes or new features, though.

If you are a Galaxy J8 user in any of the regions mentioned above, you might have received a notification for the update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also opt to download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy J8 in May 2018 with Android 8.0 Oreo. The smartphone received the Android 9 update in mid-2019 and the Android 10-based One UI 2 update in mid-2020.

This Galaxy S21 Ultra competitor will get laughably short software support

Samsung is undoubtedly the king of software updates in the land of Android phones. For the longest time the company guaranteed two major OS updates to devices across all price points, and now, Samsung promises three generations of OS updates to many mid-range devices and all flagship phones. Security updates, meanwhile, are guaranteed for as long as four years, and up to five years for some enterprise edition variants.

It’s not Apple-grade, but Samsung’s software support game is far ahead of the rest of the competition, especially given the number of devices it spits out each year. Some manufacturers, like OnePlus, are trying to bridge the gap in some ways, but others aren’t so concerned. Case in point: Sony’s new flagship, the $1,299 Xperia I III, will be supported “with the latest Android updates for two years after its launch.

Even the Galaxy A51 will get more big OS upgrades than the Xperia 1 III

That’s right: A Sony phone that is competing with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung’s top-of-the-line flagship, is being promised lesser support than what Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A51 will manage. And Sony isn’t even saying anything about security updates. Those are arguably more important in this day and age, but only Samsung seems completely sure about its intentions and long-term plans as far as security updates are concerned.

At the end of the day, if post-purchase peace of mind is an important parameter for you, Samsung’s phones are pretty much the best you can get. Not that Samsung can rest on its laurels, because at least one manufacturer — the maker of Android itself — is reportedly trying to destroy the Korean giant’s software update advantage by promising five years of support for upcoming Pixel phones, though it’s unclear at this time if that support will translate to five Android OS updates.

Samsung’s making 120Hz foldable displays for everyone this year

Samsung’s at the forefront of the foldable smartphone market, with a lead so strong other manufacturers can only hope to catch up any time soon. In addition to making its own yearly foldable phones, with new refreshes in the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lineups due next month, Samsung is also making foldable displays for other manufacturers.

Companies like Google, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo are currently working on foldable devices of their own and are sourcing their foldable displays from Samsung, and according to analyst Ross Young, all foldable panels Samsung will make this year will feature a 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO technology (which enables variable refresh rate for higher power efficiency).

Of course, the main takeaway here is that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are confirmed to feature 120Hz LTPO displays similar to the Note 20 Ultra and S21 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Flip had a standard 60Hz screen while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 only featured high refresh rate support on the inner display. That’s set to change with the sequels to those phones, which are due for launch sometime next month, though a release date currently remains a little uncertain according to a recent report.

Google will reportedly also be using Samsung’s UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) technology for a higher degree of protection on the folding display. Oppo and Xiaomi are also said to be using the technology for their phones, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as Samsung’s display arm works independently of its mobile unit and, therefore, doesn’t keep any of its technical advancements exclusive to Galaxy devices.

Apple Pay is coming to take Samsung Pay’s business on its home turf

Samsung Pay doesn’t have any competition from Apple in South Korea, but this will apparently change soon. The South Korean government is planning to invest $133 billion on a new initiative called ‘K-New Deal,’ which is meant to help bolster projects across the digital and green economy sectors.

The project is also looking to improve South Korea’s NFC infrastructure for mobile transactions and create a better platform for MZ generation customers. According to a fresh report by @FrontTron, Apple Pay will eventually be released in South Korea as part of the K-New Deal strategy.

Why isn’t Apple Pay available in South Korea yet?

According to previous news from the Korean media, card issuers in the country have attempted to bring Apple Pay to South Korea since 2015, but Apple’s demands were too steep. This problem continues to this day, and last year, some domestic card issuers have reportedly stopped negotiating with Apple altogether because of the US company’s unreasonable fees.

But judging by the more recent report, South Korean card issuers and Apple might be working on a new strategy under the umbrella of the K-New Deal program. There’s no telling when Apple Pay could be launching in Korea, but if these plans go through, we’re likely to hear more about the platform’s launch in the coming months.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung will try to counter Apple’s move in South Korea, but either way, Apple’s eventual arrival poses a big threat for Samsung, the latter of which was protected indirectly by the aforementioned disagreements between Apple and card issuers.

With no Note coming, are you looking forward to the next Galaxy Unpacked?

Times are changing, and the next Galaxy Unpacked event will be very different from what we’ve grown accustomed to. Not because it will be hosted in a virtual environment, as this isn’t something unheard of, but because Galaxy Unpacked 2021 will be the first Samsung event scheduled for the second half of any given year to miss out on the Galaxy Note series.

Over the past decade or so, Samsung’s Unpacked events held in H2 were focused on revealing a new Galaxy Note model. This year will be different, as every bit of leaked evidence claims that there won’t be a Galaxy Note 21 coming in 2021. The iconic S Pen smartphone series has been shelved for the time being, but the yearly event will continue with a new focus on a different category of devices.

What’s there to look forward to at Galaxy Unpacked 2021?

The next Galaxy Unpacked event will be almost entirely focused on the company’s latest foldable devices, namely the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The company will also launch the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic wearables, along with the Galaxy Buds 2.

The S Pen Pro will make an appearance at Unpacked thanks to the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be compatible with this accessory (and also the Galaxy S21 Ultra). This makes Samsung’s decision to abandon the Galaxy Note series a bit more bearable, but it might not be enough to appease hardcore fans.

The S Pen / S Pen Pro will be offered as an optional accessory for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but the device won’t have a dedicated S Pen slot. The foldable won’t deliver an optimal S Pen experience in this regard, even if it will be compatible with the upcoming S Pen Pro, and this begs the question of how many fans of Samsung and the Galaxy Note brand will be looking forward to Galaxy Unpacked 2021.

Of course, there are a couple of new wearables planned to be on stage, and the Galaxy S21 FE might also make an appearance, even though rumors suggest otherwise. So, are you excited about the second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2021? And will the lack of a Galaxy Note model change anything for you? Feel free to participate in our poll and leave a comment below.

Samsung Calendar update adds Google Meet integration, improves search

Samsung’s Calendar app is getting a new update with additional customization options, functionality improvements, and minor UI changes. Calendar version 12.2.04.8000 is now available for download from the Galaxy Store, but it doesn’t seem to be available everywhere. It appears to be rolling out in certain regions first, with Europe seemingly having priority.

The new Calendar version adds a Join button for events such as Google Meet video calls, and it moves the Search button from the contextual menu to the main screen right between the existing S Pen and current date buttons. The changelog also mentions some improvements to calendar management and support for more colors in My Calendar. Users can now choose from a dozen color options instead of just six.

Galaxy smartphone and tablet users can grab the latest version of Calendar from the Galaxy Store by accessing the “Updates” section in the side menu. Alternatively, they can access the Calendar settings screen and update the app from the “About Calendar” section.

If you can’t find the latest version (12.2.04.8000), it means that the update has yet to reach your location. The rollout is seemingly staggered, but sit tight and the update should reach your device sooner rather than later.

Samsung started rolling out the July 2021 security update to its smartphones and tablets in the last week of June. The international variants of the Galaxy S10 series were the first phones to get the update. Now, the unlocked variants of the Galaxy S10 have started receiving the latest security patch.

The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10+ have started getting a new update in the US. The latest update carries firmware version G97xU1UES5GUF2 and includes the July 2021 security patch. Samsung had mentioned in its documentation that its latest security patch fixes more than 20 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. It should also fix any Android Auto bug that you may be facing.

If you are someone who uses the unlocked version of the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or the Galaxy S10+ in the US, you can get the latest update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. The update is currently available on Bluegrass Cellular, Comcast, Nextech/C-spire, and Xfinity Mobile’s network in the US. More carrier networks could get the update over the next few days. Samsung Internet beta gets another update to version 15

Samsung Internet beta is getting a new update days after version 15.0 came out. The recent release introduced an enhanced anti-tracking technology with better protection against fingerprint tracking, as well as back-forward cache support for an improved browsing experience. The latest update, however, isn’t as significant, so don’t hold your breath for new features to arrive this shortly after the release of version 15.0.1.12.

So, what’s the new release all about then? Well, Samsung Internet 15 beta version 15.0.1.22 is now rolling out to introduce bug fixes and stabilization patches. The changelog is scarce and all the changes appear to have happened under the hood. It’s a beta release, after all, and it’s supposed to address issues that may have surfaced since the launch of version 15 last week.

If you have used version 15.0.1.12 and experienced stability and performance issues over the past week or so, then give this version 15.0.1.22 a try.

Samsung Internet keeps getting better

Samsung Internet is one of the best mobile browsers around — if not the best –, but it is not perfect. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been necessary for new updates to be released. But there are plenty of reasons why Samsung Internet made a name for itself in recent years, and the list is only getting longer.

More importantly, Samsung hasn’t stopped testing new features through its beta program, and new updates for the live version are being released at a steady pace. Speaking of which, the company has yet to make Samsung Internet 15 available outside the beta program, but its eventual release draws near with each new bug fix and patch that’s being rolled out to the beta channel.

If you want to participate in the beta program, you can download Samsung Internet 15 beta from the Galaxy Store, the Play Store, or the APK section on our website.

Galaxy M01s finally gets the Android 11 update with One UI 3.1

The Galaxy M01s is the latest Samsung smartphone to get the Android 11 update. The new software update brings One UI Core 3.1 to the smartphone along with the July 2021 security patch. The South Korean firm has started rolling out the new update in India, and other markets could get it over the next few weeks.

Samsung has released a new software update with firmware version M017FXXU2CUG1 to the Galaxy M01s. It brings a refreshed UI design, more consistent iconography, smoother animations and transitions, improved performance, and better security. The new software includes one-time permissions, auto permissions reset, chat bubbles, Conversations section in the notifications area, a dedicated media playback widget below quick setting toggles, and improved Digital Wellbeing.

The update also brings new lock screen widgets, more Dynamic Lockscreen categories, image and video call backgrounds, and a double-tap gesture to lock the screen. Samsung has also updated all the stock apps such as Samsung Gallery, Samsung Internet, Samsung Keyboard, and Samsung Messages. The company claims that it has improved the camera performance through better autofocus and auto exposure. Accessing smart home device controls has become easier.

If you are a Galaxy M01s user in India, you can either wait for the OTA update or check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also flash the newest firmware manually after downloading it from our firmware database, but the process only works if you have a Windows PC.

Galaxy Wearable app updated ahead of Galaxy Buds 2, Watch 4 launch

A new update to the Galaxy Wearable app is currently on its way to you, but as for its contents, Samsung’s keeping this particular release on the down-low. That is to say, the changelog is suspiciously missing, but the timing of the update does give us an idea or two about what might be going on here. What with the incoming debut of the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Watch 4.

Mind you, we’ve already made sure the new version of the app doesn’t pre-emptively list Samsung’s new upcoming products. Such a gaffe would not be without precedent, but Samsung seems to be more careful this time around. Well, at least on the front-end – the underlying code for Samsung’s wearable app did reveal some juicy Galaxy Buds 2 details over the weekend, after all.

New Galaxy wearables are coming soon

Regardless, you can count on the Galaxy Wearable app to remain the main bridge between your smartphone and the next generation of Samsung’s wearables. Both the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Watch 4 are pretty much guaranteed to support it and as we move closer to their release, more details on the matter are expected to follow.

Speaking of which, there have been some new developments regarding the commercial availability of both the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Buds 2. In fact, things have gotten pretty confusing on the release date front for both of these devices as of late. The only thing we can say with certainty right now is that Samsung is planning to launch its next-gen wearables come August 11th. What remains to be seen is how long of a pre-order period is the company planning to offer.

If you’re using a wearable product from Samsung, you should be prompted to install the Galaxy Wearable update the next time you open the app. You will also find the update listed in the My apps section of the Google Play Store and the Updates section of the Galaxy Store.

Samsung still unsure when to release its 2021 foldables, and it might be because of the iPhone 13

In case you’ve missed last week’s blunder by Amazon Canada, the Galaxy Watch 4 is expected to release on August 27th. Up until now, it was kind of implied this extends to the Galaxy Buds 2 and Samsung’s 2021 foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, that might not be the case, after all. At least not internationally, according to a newly emerged report from the Far East.

Namely, South Korean media report that Samsung is still deciding between the 20th and 27th as the dates for when to release its newest gadgets. Note that this is commercial availability we’re talking about, as all of the products are still expected to be unveiled on the 11th of August.

Samsung is reportedly considering the benefits of an extended pre-order period

Still, seeing how Samsung’s home country is usually the one spearheading the release of any one of its devices, the fact that the company remains undecided on when exactly to release its summer portfolio could point to last-minute changes on the global stage, as well.

Korean sources claim the original plan was closer to the 20th. However, Samsung is now said to be considering the benefits of an extended pre-order period, thus leaning more toward the 27th, according to the report. The fact that numerous rival products are expected to launch around this date further complicates things. And ultimately, Samsung doesn’t want to get too close to the release of the iPhone 13 series, either, sources said. What to make out of all of this? We’ll likely know more in the days ahead.

Samsung’s next-gen The Wall microLED TV is thinner and has better colors

Samsung has launched the 2021 version of its The Wall microLED TV. It is not only thinner but also capable of displaying more accurate colors. Moreover, the company has also managed to implement a higher refresh rate for smoother motion handling. Samsung also says that the new modular The Wall TV is easier to install. The TV is available in select markets starting today.

The new version of The Wall is the industry’s first commercial display in its segment to feature 8K resolution. It can be configured horizontally to support up to 16K resolution (15,360 x 1,080 pixels). The new display can span up to a whopping 1,000 inches and its brightness can go as high as 1,600 nits. It features an improved Micro AI processor that analyzes and optimizes every frame in the video for better content upscaling (up to 8K resolution). The AI processor also helps in removing noise in the videos.

The new TV also supports a 120Hz refresh rate and is capable of displaying more accurate colors, thanks to Black Seal and Ultra Chroma technologies. Samsung says that the Black Seal technology blankets the screen with better uniformity for purer blacks. The Ultra Chroma technology creates narrower wavelengths to create colors that are twice as pure as conventional LCD displays. Other features of the TV include 20-bit processing, HDR10+, picture-by-picture (2 x 2), and the Eye Comfort mode (with TUV Rheinland certification).

Samsung The Wall MicroLED TV 2021

The South Korean firm has also made the 2021 version of The Wall TV easier to install by implementing wireless docking connections and endless design. The commercial version of The Wall TV, which uses modular microLED panels, can be used in airports, shopping malls, retail stores, and outdoor advertising. It can be installed in various shapes, including ceiling, concave, convex, hanging, inclined, and L-type.

Harry Patz, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Display Division, Samsung Electronics America, said, “At Samsung, we are dedicated to helping businesses create unforgettable customer experiences through the power of dynamic displays. The Wall is the crown jewel of Samsung’s expansive display line-up. Its cutting-edge new features, unrivaled picture quality, and limitless sizing, make the 2021 model our most immersive and versatile display yet.
