Galaxy Note 7 reportedly ships with ‘Samsung Cloud’ storage service

We spotted a new trademark filing made by Samsung in the European Union about two weeks ago which suggested that the company could soon be launching a new cloud storage service for its smartphones and tablets. The service was named “Samsung Cloud Together” in the trademark filing and electronic storage of data, images, photos, videos, audios and more was mentioned in it. A new report reiterates the finding and claims that the service will simply be called Samsung Cloud and that the Galaxy Note 7 will ship with it.

Think of Samsung Cloud as the company’s iCloud competitor. It will enable users to back up their data to the cloud and access all of it across multiple supported devices. The report also mentions that all Galaxy Note 7 customers will receive 5GB of free Samsung Cloud storage. It’s likely that paid plans might be offered as well to those who require more cloud storage. Samsung’s official event for the Galaxy Note 7 is scheduled for August 2 so expect to hear more about Samsung Cloud at the event.

Is this the new Samsung Gear VR headset?

We told you about a month ago that Samsung possibly had a new Gear VR headset bearing model number SM-R323 in the pipeline. Given that the Galaxy Note 7 is said to feature a USB Type-C port, Samsung would need to refresh the headset to ensure that it’s compatible with the new flagship handset. We’ve haven’t seen any leaked pictures of the new Gear VR until today, a blurry picture claiming to show the new headset has been leaked online.

The biggest difference that you’ll immediately notice is that the entire headset is black. This obviously doesn’t mean that Samsung won’t offer it in white but it shows that an all-black Gear VR could be a possibility. It more or less appears to be similar to the existing Gear VR consumer edition, the focus wheel is clearly visible on the top. There are no details available right now about the changes made under the hood so we have to wait for that information. However, one can say with at least some degree of certainty that the new Gear VR is going to have a USB Type-C port. Samsung is likely going to announce the new virtual reality headset alongside the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2.

Leaked GIF shows everything there is to see about the Galaxy Note 7

Renders and photos of the Galaxy Note 7 have leaked so many times now that there’s nothing going to be surprising about this handset’s design when it’s unveiled on August 2. Nevertheless, until the official announcement takes place, we are bound to see more of these leaks and we do have another one from you today.

Marques Brownlee a.k.a MKBHD shot to popularity with his impeccable tech reviews on YouTube. He has posted a GIF of the Galaxy Note 7 on Twitter, it’s actually the first 360 that we’ve seen of the Galaxy Note 7 yet. Aside from the novelty of seeing the handset twirl on our screen, there’s nothing new about the design or the colors, all of this has been seen before. Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2 and chances are that it’s going to release the handset on the same day at least in selected markets across the globe.

Did you know? You have Samsung to thank for your HTC 10 selfies

I have always had a genuine respect for HTC’s selfie cameras. No, I don’t take selfies all that often, but I know a good selfie camera when I use it. In the limited experience I had with the One M7 and One M8 over the last few years, I gained respect for the saturated, up-close colors that define their cameras. Some think the oversaturation is too much for quality photos, but I am, after all, an AMOLED fan who loves oversaturation and doesn’t mind the same in her photos; I can’t deny it.

Well, I decided after picking up an HTC 10 of my own about 8 weeks ago to take a look at some general information about HTC’s greatest smartphone yet. Yes, I like the IP53 splash resistance, the Super LCD5 display (yes, this is the HTC marketing term for its LCD panel), as well as the chamfered edges (though I’m not crazy about them, as some of my fellow journalists seem to be). Every review and article you’ll read will brag about HTC’s rear-facing camera in the HTC 10, but what about the front-facing camera?

HTC 10 users, you have Samsung to thank for your selfies.

It was confirmed as of February of this year that the HTC 10 would feature a 12MP rear-facing camera bearing an IMX377, 12.3MP Sony sensor with a 2.3mm focal length, but HTC leakster LlabTooFeR had long confirmed that the HTC 10′s selfie camera would contain – get this – a 5MP UltraPixel camera featuring Samsung’s S5K4E6 camera sensor. Interestingly enough, Samsung is using its own selfie camera sensor in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5, as well as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, as my Verizon USA Galaxy S7 edge bears the same exact front-facing camera sensor. So does the AT&T-exclusive Galaxy S7 Active.

What do we know about this Samsung S5K4E6 camera sensor? We know very little, and Samsung’s own detailed page on the matter doesn’t tell us much (except to say that it’s an Advanced ISOCELL camera sensor that has a decreased pixel size and lower power consumption than the previous-generation camera sensor.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time that HTC has used a Samsung camera sensor in its flagship smartphone series, either. Back in 2014, after having used an OmniVision sensor for the front-facing camera in the HTC One M7, the Taiwanese phone maker selected Samsung’s S5K5E2 ISOCELL camera sensor for the front-facing camera in the HTC One M8. Though going back to OmniVision for the front camera sensor in the One M9, HTC has done well to go back to Samsung for its world-leading photography resources with its latest flagship.

HTC’s use of the S5K4E6 camera sensor in the HTC 10 shows that Samsung, who’s long been known for its AMOLED panels, is now making a statement when it comes to camera sensors. Samsung is soon to sell dual camera sensors to Chinese OEMs Xiaomi and LeEco as of this month, and it appears that Samsung’s cameras are gaining a world reputation for their performance in the user experience. It’s fine to compare the two, but Samsung has already put the edge in its own court through its growing reputation for quality cameras.

Of course, selfie cameras, as with rear-facing cameras, are all about what you do with them: camera sensors aren’t enough to accommodate for the responsibility of the manufacturer in the camera software/enhancement experience, and HTC did add OIS to its front camera (which sets it apart from most other selfie smartphone cameras on the market). At the same time, though, Sony has been the undisputed standard in camera tech with its sensor chips for years – and the use of Samsung selfie camera sensors in non-Samsung smartphones testifies to the company’s increasingly-renown reputation in this area.

With Samsung’s RAM, AMOLED displays, and Exynos 7420 processor having been implemented by other smartphone OEMs, it just might be the case in a few years that Samsung’s camera sensors become the industry standard as well.  With Samsung, anything’s possible.

Samsung relying on ‘experiential’ marketing to hype its products

Advertising is no longer what it used to be. The emergence of new mediums has challenged creatives to come up with campaigns better suited to these mediums. Online marketing done right can be very lucrative as it offers a greater potential of reaching people far and wide but it’s becoming harder to capitalize on this medium particularly when people are actively blocking ads to improve their online experience. Samsung is aware of this challenge which is why it’s increasingly relying on “experiential” marketing and social media to hype its products, according to Marc Mathieu, chief marketing officer at Samsung Electronics America.

“Marketing used to be about creating a myth and telling it, and now it’s about finding a truth and sharing it,” Mathieu said on the WSJ Media Mix podcast. One of the initiatives that Samsung took was the launch of its massive showroom and event space in New York City earlier this year called Samsung 837. The company describes it as a “technology playground” where potential customers can not only experience its products but also be inspired by them enough to share their experiences on social media. In line with its experiential marketing philosophy, Samsung is leaning on virtual reality to demonstrate its products at various events in a virtual reality environment. Mathieu says that enabling people to experience Samsung’s products in virtual reality makes them very likely to talk about it online and social media. Mathieu further explained Samsung’s marketing strategy on the WSJ Media Mix podcast.

Galaxy Note 7 ad drops definitive clues straight from the horse’s mouth

The specs of Samsung’s upcoming Note phablet have been published all across the internet, but some folks just want to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, no more rumors, no more discussion, no more “maybe, maybe not” scenarios.

Well, you won’t get to hear the Galaxy Note 7 specs or features straight from the horse’s mouth, but how about picking up some clues from an ad?

Yep, Samsung has decided to drop some hints and clues as to what the next-generation Galaxy Note will bring to the mobile table, but the Korean giant doesn’t come right out and tell us. Nope, you’ll have to figure out that the new fingerprint sliding and unlock pattern is a new form of fingerprint unlock, that the woman holding a light bulb indicates something of a front-facing flash for the front camera, the sliding of the marker across the pages of a book indicates that there’ll be something of a new highlighting capability integrated within the S Pen, that the phones in water is all about IP68 certification, and that the next number in the sequence (0,1,2,3,4,5, ?) is “No” (the “No” before the “Note”), not what you’d expect.

What makes the Galaxy Note 7 ad wonderful is that it drops clues that are open to discussion. So, take a look at the video below, then let us know what you think.

Exclusive: Gear S3 has a rotary bezel, will be unveiled at IFA in September

We were the first to exclusively confirm that the Gear S2 smartwatch would have a rotary bezel back in January 2015 and we were proven right when the smartwatch was unveiled later that year in August. There has been a lot of speculation about the Gear S2′s successor but there’s still not a lot to go on right now. We can reveal today that the Gear S3 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor and makes use of a rotary bezel which basically means that Samsung’s next smartwatch is round as well.

Furthermore, we can also reveal that Samsung is going to unveil the Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA. This trade show for consumer electronics takes place in Berlin every year, IFA 2016 will run from September 2-7. Samsung has previously used this stage to launch flagship Galaxy Note handsets but since the upcoming Note will be unveiled on August 2, the Gear S3 just might be one of the major mobile attractions from Samsung at IFA 2016.

Themes Thursday: Here are the three best Galaxy Themes released this week

Welcome back to Themes Thursday! Samsung has released a whopping 132 themes this week in its Theme Store, but it’s a shame that we’ve been able to like only three of them.

The [Kendi] Mountex and the [Kendi] Vox UI themes are designed pretty well, and they showcase Google’s Material UI design ideology. The Rose theme inspires calmness and sereneness.

If there’s a theme release this week that you think should’ve been mentioned here, please let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung is planning to launch Tizen smartphones in South Africa

After Samsung’s mild success with the Samsung Z1 in India and Bangladesh, it is planning to launch Tizen smartphones in another developing nation, South Africa. First of these Tizen smartphones in the Samsung Z2, which will be the first Tizen device with support for 4G LTE.

According to a report from ETNews, the Samsung Z2 will be launched in October in South Africa, and in other countries including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, and Nigeria by the end of this year. This will be Tizen’s entry into the African market. The Z2 will be the first Tizen smartphone to support remote assistance feature.

Countries like Kenya and Nigeria are building their 4G infrastructures, and it’s a good time for Samsung to grow the Tizen ecosystem there. According to some industry insiders, Samsung also wants to use these markets as testbeds for its Tizen-based IoT infrastructure, which will help it expand its IoT solutions to European and American markets.

The Samsung Z2 will come with a remote assistance feature where owners can get live help from the company’s call centers. It is also expected to feature an AMOLED display, 1GB of RAM, and the S Bike Mode, which automatically responds to messages and calls while the user is driving.

Galaxy Folder 2 receives Bluetooth certification

We’ve known for a while now that Samsung is working on a new Android-powered clamshell smartphone called the Galaxy Folder 2. We first caught wind of the device when components to build the unit were spotted in an import listing two months ago, then four weeks later a batch of prototypes were sent to India for testing and evaluation purposes. Now, however, it would appear that the handset is one step closer to seeing the light of day as it has just received Bluetooth certification bearing the model number SM-G1600.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much to go on with regards to specifications. A recent FCC filing revealed that the Galaxy Folder 2 will sport a 2,000mAh battery, but that’s all we know for sure. Speculation suggests that the device will also pack a 3.8-inch touchscreen, a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable up to 200GB via microSD), an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP selfie shooter. It’s also expected to run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI straight out of the box.

Unannounced Samsung tablet spotted in new FCC filing

Earlier today, an unannounced Samsung-branded tablet passed through the United States of America’s official certification authority, the FCC. Unfortunately, the documentation provided in the listing doesn’t reveal much about the slate, other than that it carries the model number SM-P585, and will ship with a plethora of different connectivity options, including WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS and LTE compatibility for bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20 and 40.

The render that accompanied the written information in the application also suggests that the SM-P585 will sport an S Pen, which immediately leads us to believe that we’re looking a new model in the Galaxy Note series. In addition, the size of the device in the sketch doesn’t appear to be more than 8-inches, indicating that this is, in fact, a successor to the Galaxy Note 8.0 that launched back in February 2013 and not the next generation Galaxy Note 10.1.
