First Galaxy Quantum 2 live images reveal a triple-camera and more

It was revealed a few days ago that Samsung is working on a higher mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A82 5G, and that it could be launched as the Galaxy Quantum 2 in South Korea. A few specifications and the front design of the phone were leaked earlier via Google Play Store Console listing. Now, the first live images of the upcoming phone have appeared.

The Galaxy Quantum 2 appears to have a large Super AMOLED Infinity-O display at the front with thin bezels on all sides. The phone could be launched in two colors: black and white. At the rear, the phone appears to have a triple-camera setup with an LED flash. While the camera resolution hasn’t been detailed in any of the leaked images, we expect the phone to feature a wide-angle, an ultrawide, and a telephoto camera. The phone’s size appears very similar to that of the Galaxy S21+, which means that it could have a 6.7-inch display.

Since there isn’t any fingerprint reader on the rear or the side, we expect it to feature an in-display fingerprint reader. One of these images showcases the phone’s additional security features (probably a Quantum Random Number Generator) that can help while online shopping, logging into various online services, and identity verification. The phone could be launched in South Korea exclusively via SK Telecom’s network.

Previous leaks have shown that the Galaxy Quantum 2 features a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, and a 64MP (Sony IMX686) primary camera. And one of the images among the newly-leaked ones confirms the phone’s memory and storage capacity. The phone will also come with a charger (probably 15W) and a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable. It could also feature Android 11, GPS, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a 4,500mAh or larger battery with fast charging.

Best Samsung Galaxy phones that still have a 3.5mm headphone jack

Samsung began experimenting with the idea of removing the standard 3.5mm headphone jack from its smartphones back in 2019. And contrary to popular belief, Samsung actually began removing the 3.5mm jack from a wider range of phones, not just its flagships. A couple of years ago, it looked as if the 3.5mm standard was going away for good. The company had initially launched a handful of mid-range phones without a headphone jack, including the Galaxy M40, the Galaxy A60, the Galaxy A80, and the Galaxy A90 5G.

Thankfully, the demise of the standard headphone jack didn’t come as quickly as it seemed at first. Samsung realized that it might not be such a great idea to ditch the 3.5mm standard in lower-cost devices, and as a result, the majority of Galaxy phones that lack this feature today belong to the premium segment.

If you’re in the market for a new phone and the 3.5mm jack is a must-have feature then obviously the flagship segment is out of reach. But are there any other good options out there? Indeed there are.

The best Galaxy phones with a 3.5mm headphone jack

Galaxy M02s / F02s: Ultra low-cost solution

Samsung Galaxy M02 Display

The Galaxy F02s that got released in India recently is a low-cost device based on the Galaxy M02s. Regardless of which version you might have access to, the Galaxy M02s / F02s generally costs anywhere between $100 and $150, making it one of Samsung’s cheapest smartphones that are still equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Other specs include a Snapdragon 450 chipset, a 6.5-inch display with a 1600 by 720 pixel count, a triple-camera combo, and a 5,000mAh battery with 15W charging.

  • Model: SM-M027F
  • Dimensions: Bar: x x mm
  • Display: 6.5 inch / 165.1 mm PLS TFT LCD
  • CPU: Snapdragon 450
  • Camera: 13MP

Galaxy M62 / F62: Monster battery and high-end chipset on a budget

Similarly, the Galaxy F62 is a rebranded Galaxy M62 meant for the select markets, but they’re both equally impressive. The Galaxy M62 / F62 combines a monster 7,000mAh battery that has 25W charging with a flagship-grade Exynos 9825 chipset — the same SoC that was employed by the Galaxy Note 10 series.

Both variants have a 3.5mm headphone jack, obviously, but they also benefit from a quad-camera setup, 25W charging, a large 6.7-inch display, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

  • Model: SM-E625F
  • Dimensions: Bar: 163.9 x 76.3 x 9.5 mm
  • Display: 6.7 inch / 170.18 mm Super AMOLED Plus
  • CPU: Exynos 9825
  • Camera: 64MP

Galaxy A32: Cheapest high refresh rate display and 3.5mm jack combo

The heading above pretty much encapsulates why the Galaxy A32 is on this list. It’s the cheapest Galaxy phone that has both a high refresh rate display and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and it will set you back around $300.

The phone also has a FHD+ display resolution, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and it boasts 15W charging for its generous 5,000mAh battery. It carries a quad-camera setup with a 64MP main sensor, as well as a 20MP selfie shooter.

  • Model: SM-A325F
  • Dimensions: Bar: 158.9 x 73.6 x 8.4 mm
  • Display: 6.4 inch / 162.56 mm Super AMOLED Display
  • CPU: Mediatek Helio G80
  • Camera: 64MP

Galaxy A52 5G: 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers on a budget

There are plenty of reasons to love the Galaxy A52 5G. Too many to count here, but you can check our review linked below for a more in-depth analysis of this device. As to why it’s on this list, the Galaxy A52 is Samsung’s cheapest phone of the year to feature stereo speakers as well as a 3.5mm audio port.

This characteristic has so far been reserved for flagships, but not anymore. If you’re looking for a superior audio experience with and without headphones / earbuds, the Galaxy A52 is a good cost-effective choice. Not to mention the 120Hz display and other great features like the Snapdragon 750G SoC, 25W charging, and the IP67 water resistance rating.

  • Model: SM-A526B
  • Dimensions: Bar: 159.9 x 75.1 x 8.4 mm
  • Display: 6.5 inch / 165.10 mm Super AMOLED Display
  • CPU: Snapdragon 750G
  • Camera: 64MP

Galaxy A72: A noteworthy alternative to the Galaxy A52

The Galaxy A72 is an intriguing device because it’s virtually a Galaxy A52 with slight modifications and a larger footprint. It lacks 5G connectivity and 120Hz, but it has a 90Hz display and a camera combo that enables high-range (30x) zoom on par with that offered by the costlier Galaxy S20 FE. In short, it’s one of the best 2021 Galaxy phones that aren’t a flagship, and indeed, it retains the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Other specs include the Snapdragon 720G chipset, a 5,000 mAh battery, with 25W charging, stereo speakers, and the same IP67 rating as the Galaxy A52.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite: An S Pen-enabled phone with a headphone jack

If you’re looking for a new S Pen-enabled Galaxy phone that has a headphone jack, well, you’re out of luck. There are no such devices that are newer than the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, but the good news is that said smartphone continues to be sold in select markets, including India, where it costs around $400.

The S Pen is no longer a Note-exclusive accessory following the release of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but it has yet to be made available for any other budget-oriented device aside from the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. This makes it the cheapest S Pen device with a headphone jack.

Galaxy XCover Pro / XCover 5: The rugged solutions

Last but not necessarily least, the Galaxy XCover Pro and the newly-introduced Galaxy XCover 5 are two of the very few Android-powered smartphones on the market to have a 3.5mm headphone jack and a military-grade body.

The Galaxy XCover Pro’s design is not as industrial and the phone has better specifications, whereas the XCover 5 has a more rugged design, a smaller display, and isn’t as powerful. They both have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and they’re available for under $400.

What’s your favorite Galaxy smartphone / series that has retained the 3.5mm headphone jack, and has this feature remained a decisive factor for you when choosing a new phone? How important is the 3.5mm port in 2021? Join us in the comment section below and let us know.

New leak talks about different Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 2 display sizes

It’s the second consecutive day of alleged display details pertaining to Samsung’s upcoming foldable devices leaking, but the latest bits of information don’t seem to agree with data shared previously. While yesterday’s rumor claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be equipped with a 5.4-inch cover display, a new tweet passed along by DSCC analyst @DSCCRoss claims otherwise. The same source has also revealed a couple of additional Galaxy Z Flip 2 display details.

According to the latest, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be equipped with a 7.55-inch foldable display and a 6.21-inch cover display. This configuration sounds very similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. As for the clamshell foldable, it will reportedly retain the 6.7-inch display diagonal for the main foldable panel, but it will boast a larger 1.83-inch cover display. Still not large enough to provide full smartphone functionality but it would be a step in the right direction.

Nothing is set in stone yet

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 2 seem to be generating some rather conflicting display-related reports, and no, this isn’t the first time for industry watchers to disagree on what they think Samsung’s strategy will be for its next foldable devices.

We don’t believe that Samsung will want to give the Galaxy Z Fold 3 a smaller cover display, but then again, the foldable family of devices is still young and the design paradigm could change at any moment. There’s no telling how the Galaxy Z Fold formula will change once it will adopt an S Pen.

As for the clamshell form factor, Samsung seems to be weighing the pros and cons of adding a larger cover display to the Galaxy Z Flip series, but the company may or may not make this a reality with the upcoming model. We’ll keep you posted.

Samsung’s cheapest 5G Galaxy A phones are coming to the US

Samsung has been on a mission to significantly lower the barrier of entry to the world of 5G. The company already offers multiple mid-range handsets that are compatible with 5G networks. It’s now bringing the latest and cheapest 5G Galaxy A phones to the United States.

These new Samsung handsets will make 5G much more attainable for customers in the United States. The cheapest among the new models costs under $300. It presents an exceptional opportunity for customers to try 5G without having to make a significant investment.

Samsung’s first sub-$300 phone is here

The Galaxy A52 5G, Galaxy A42 5G and the Galaxy A32 5G are Samsung’s cheapest 5G Galaxy A phones this year. All three are now making their way to the United States. The best part is that all three devices come with a charger in the box.

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 5G is an even better iteration of the very solid Galaxy A52. It gets a higher 120Hz refresh rate display as well as a better Snapdragon 750G chipset. Almost everything else is the same as the LTE variant.

Check out our Galaxy A52 review to learn more about Samsung’s best mid-range smartphone yet. The Galaxy A52 5G costs $499.99 in the United States and will be available with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The Galaxy A42 5G comes with a respectable 6.6-inch HD+ display and the Snapdragon 750G processor paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. Prices for this handset start at $399.99.

Lastly, the Galaxy A32 5G is the cheapest 5G phone that Samsung is offering in the US. It has a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with a MediaTek MT6853 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. Prices start at $279.99.

Samsung is also launching the Galaxy A12 ($179.99) and Galaxy A02s ($109.99) in the United States as its new entry-level options. These are obviously not 5G-enabled but present good value for money nonetheless.

The Galaxy A42 5G is going to be available in the US starting tomorrow. The Galaxy A52 5G, Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A12 will go on sale come April 9. The Galaxy A02s will be available from April 29.

Samsung launches attractive cashback offers on Neo QLED & lifestyle TVs

Samsung’s new Neo QLED TV series is set to usher in a new era of breath-taking TV picture quality, or at the very least, this is one of the ways in which the company is describing its latest smart TV lineup. It was first unveiled at CES and fully announced in early March, and so far it’s been released in numerous key markets including the UK.

Samsung has now launched a promotional period in the UK wherein Neo QLED TV customers can get up to £500 cashback when purchasing one of the latest lifestyle TVs or a model from the Neo family. The rule of thumb is that the larger the display, the bigger the cashback value, so TV models like the 50-inch QN90A / QN94A and the smaller Serif and The Frame (32-to-50-inch) are now accompanied by a £100 cashback.

In the meantime, Samsung is offering £200, £300, £400, and £500 cashback on 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch Neo QLED and lifestyle models, respectively. The offer is valid until May 4 at Samsung’s online shop as well as selected retailers.

The cashback offer is available to customers in the UK and Ireland. Cashback claims have to be submitted within 60 days from the date of purchase, and there’s a limit of two claims per participant. You can refer to the official cashback deals page for more details.

Galaxy S20 series now receiving April 2021 security update

The Galaxy S20 series started receiving the April 2021 Android security update this week, not long after Samsung began deploying it across the board. Identified by version number G98xxXXS7DUC9, the new software release has first been spotted in Germany this Tuesday. We’re still waiting for the package to make its way to more countries, but that’s bound to happen any moment now.

In the meantime, you can check whether the update is already available in your territory by launching the system Settings app, then navigating to its Software update section and the bottom and picking the Update and install option on the final interface.

What’s new in this month’s OTA?

Alternatively, there’s a mirror of a complete system image pre-loaded with the new update that you can download from our firmware archives. Give it a few days and there should be dozens of them, as per usual. They provide experienced tinkerers with everything they need to flash the April 1st security patch to their Galaxy S20-series devices manually. But no amount of experience will make up for the data you could lose if you forget to back up your internal storage prior to the installation and something goes wrong in the process. So, don’t let that happen to you and always make backups of everything.

Based on the package designation, we can confirm that this particular update doesn’t bring any other features or improvements beyond the stated fixes aimed at addressing various security vulnerabilities in the Android OS and Samsung’s in-house implementation thereof. But there’s quite a few of those this time around; Samsung itself said as much, albeit indirectly, via its latest security bulletin published just yesterday.

  • Model: SM-G980F
  • Dimensions: Bar: 151.7 x 69.1 x 7.9 mm
  • Display: 6.2 inch / 157.48 mm Dynamic AMOLED 2X
  • CPU: Exynos 990
  • Camera: 12MP

Samsung could be in trouble as Qualcomm and TSMC join forces

The pandemic has had a significant impact on the chip market. It’s now witnessing a global chip shortage the likes of which have never been seen before. Even though the major players in the industry are taking steps to improve the situation, the shortage is far from over.

Qualcomm may be one of the biggest suppliers of mobile chipsets but it’s entirely dependent on third-party manufacturers. The company doesn’t have its own production facilities so it has to secure manufacturing capacity at companies like Samsung and TSMC. Its latest deal with TSMC could spell trouble for Samsung.

TSMC grants an unprecedented favor to Qualcomm

Qualcomm has had its high-end chipsets manufactured by both Samsung and TSMC. It chose the latter for the 2019 and 2020 chips but returned to Samsung for the Snapdragon 888. It was reported last month that Qualcomm would also have its next-gen flagship processor manufactured by Samsung, despite rumors that it may shift back to TSMC.

It’s not just the lack of available manufacturing capacity that’s causing problems in the chip market. Packaging substrates and wafers are also in short supply. All of these issues are making companies evaluate their strategies so that they don’t face any business disruption down the line.

Industry sources are now reporting that TSMC and Qualcomm are taking a big step to further cement their relationship. Despite the strain on its manufacturing capacity, TSMC has agreed to manufacture a batch of high-end 5G chips for Qualcomm on priority. Precisely what chips TSMC has decided to accommodate remains unknown but it’s clear that this would be an unprecedented favor that the Taiwanese manufacturer would be extending to Qualcomm.

Has that favor been done at Samsung expense? Could this mean that Qualcomm would ultimately have its next-gen flagship chipset made by TSMC as well? Even if that’s not the case, Samsung may also struggle to secure enough chipsets from Qualcomm for its new flagships next year.

The chip shortage has already forced Samsung to cancel the Galaxy Note 21. Since it maintains an Exynos/Qualcomm split among its flagships, lack of adequate supply from Qualcomm might also force Samsung to adjust its product lineup in 2022.

Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs use MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 6E chip

Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs, which were unveiled during the company’s CES 2021 event earlier this year, use the Mini-LED backlighting technology for improved image quality. They also feature a faster processor for better performance, built-in multi-channel speakers for immersive audio, and Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless connectivity.

The South Korean firm has now confirmed that its flagship Neo QLED TVs—QN900A and QN800A—use MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 6E chip. The MT7921AU connectivity chip features Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. It can reach peak Wi-Fi speeds of up to 1.2Gbps (provided that users have a Wi-Fi 6E router and sufficiently fast internet connectivity) by using the 6GHz spectrum to offer seamless 8K video streaming. Bluetooth 5.2 brings a wider range, faster data transfer speeds, and native support for truly wireless earphones and higher quality wireless audio codecs.

Samsung was the first brand in the world to introduce a Wi-Fi 6-equipped TV last year, and it became the first in the world to launch a Wi-Fi 6E TV. Similarly, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the world’s first smartphone to feature Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. With the Wi-Fi 6E ecosystem slowly expanding, users can experience cutting-edge wireless technology for faster data speeds and quick access to internet services such as 8K video streaming and high-resolution cloud gaming.

Jerry Yu, MediaTek Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Intelligent Devices Business Group, said, “Consumers depend on fast, reliable connectivity, whether they are using their TV for streaming, gaming, or following along with workouts. Our collaboration with Samsung has been instrumental in bringing consumers the latest smart TV technology to support these uses and beyond. With our advanced connectivity technologies integrated into Samsung’s 8K TVs, we’re driving the premium smart TV segment forward globally.

Samsung is closing the gap with Sony in smartphone camera sensor market

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the smartphone market marched on in 2020, which in turn helped the smartphone camera sensor market. Sony and Samsung are the two big players in the camera sensor market, and the South Korean firm appears to be closing the gap with its Japanese rival.

According to the data from market research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung was the second-biggest smartphone camera sensor brand in terms of revenue share. Samsung LSI, which makes ISOCELL camera sensors for smartphones, had a 29% revenue share in 2020. Sony, the market leader, had a 46% revenue share.

Earlier, Samsung used to have a revenue share of lower than 20%, while Sony used to control over 50% share of the market. It means that Samsung is slowly closing the gap with Sony, thanks to the launch of various high-resolution sensors and newer technologies. The company’s 64MP and 108MP camera sensors were quite popular with smartphone makers. More importantly, the South Korean firm managed to fulfill orders that Sony passed on.

The Japanese firm had placed its bet on Huawei to ship more phones, but the Chinese smartphone giant was banned to do business with American firms, resulting in a huge dip in sales worldwide. Samsung, on the other hand, supplied sensors to the likes of Motorola, OPPO, Realme, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

With the launch of the 50MP ISOCELL GN2, which is the biggest smartphone camera sensor of 2021, and upcoming sensors with 200MP (or higher) resolution, Samsung is well-placed to fight Sony. The company is also doing a great job in marketing its ISOCELL camera sensors. Samsung is also rumored to be working on a 600MP camera sensor, but it might not be intended to be used in smartphones.
