Samsung reportedly selling dual-camera modules to Xiaomi

Samsung routinely supplies components to other manufacturers so it’s not surprising to hear that the company might be selling more of its technology. A new report out of Korea suggests that Chinese OEMs Xiaomi and LeEco could soon sell smartphones with dual-cameras because Samsung will be supplying them with the modules. Sources tell The Korea Herald that Samsung will begin supplying the modules starting next month.

Samsung Electro Mechanics is already supplying single-camera modules to Xiaomi. It’s said that the dual-camera modules are meant for the Xiaomi Mi 5S handset that’s due to be released in the second half of this year. The company is also expected to supply similar modules to Oppo as well. Samsung doesn’t usually confirm the vendors that it works with so it’s unlikely that the company will send out a statement confirming the supply of dual-camera modules to Chinese OEMs.

Samsung launches Creative Square, an incubation program for mobile startups

Samsung has invested in startups such as US virtual reality startup Baobab Studios and purchased Canadian digital advertising startup AdGear, while opening up its Silicon Valley headquarters to fledgling business creations, but the company wants to be a responsible source of startups, too. Samsung’s Creative Labs (C-Lab) projects that have taken employees off the work line and placed them in business creation dreams, but Samsung isn’t done with projects just yet.

Whereas the Korean giant is encouraging its employees to chase after their research dreams in a move that is nothing short of trendy for this decades-old tech giant, Samsung wants to do more: not only does it want to encourage its employees to create business startups, it wants to be a startup incubator for non-employee persons as well. To this end, Samsung has decided, in the spirit of Creative Labs, to launch a mobile startup incubation program known as Creative Square.

Creative Square is designed to help individuals who have an idea for a mobile startup to get their business off the ground with a little help from Samsung. The Korean giant wants to encourage individuals to emerge with groundbreaking ideas that will change the face of mobile both now and in the future. The benefits behind Creative Square for individuals whose mobile startup and design ideas are selected will receive 6-12 months of access to the company’s Seoul R&D campus and will also be given 100 billion won ($85,000 USD) in financial support from Samsung.

The company is taking applications from June 27th through July 31st and will open its website for registration starting Monday, June 27th.

Samsung considering relocation of its London headquarters due to Brexit

Tech companies often like to believe that they can withstand anything, but, as in every area of life, the will of the people (no matter how unpopular and misguided) often prevails. When it does, tech companies stand to lose millions in the market. A new report says that the UK’s decisive vote in favor of departing from the European Union (EU) has Samsung considering the possibility of relocating its London headquarters to somewhere in Europe while leaving the UK altogether.

The Brexit vote saw 51.9% of voters opt in favor of leaving the united front, but British citizens will have to weather the storm for the next two years before their departure is official. Samsung once enjoyed 21% of all European mobile sales back in 2013, but that number has declined to 12.8% over a 3-year period. This decline in sales can be seen best in Samsung’s decision to shut down its camera and camcorder business in the UK as well as the Korean giant’s decision not to release the Galaxy Note 5 in Europe last year due to the presumed small desire for the device. The UK’s upcoming independent status means that the country no longer need abide by the laws of the EU — which means that it has the right to raise tariffs and stiffen importation prices against non-British companies. Korean tech companies like Samsung and yes, even fellow Seoul rival LG Electronics (as well as Acer), will take a hit when it comes to pricing because consumer confidence declines as prices rise.

With the UK EU departure, commonly known as Brexit, prices in the EU will increase because consumer confidence will take a hit (seeing Brexit in action doesn’t exactly spell confidence in the united establishment), and the Great British Pound’s drop in currency evaluation will likely lead to higher pricing for UK products as well (since, as an independent country, the UK will likely raise prices on foreign products in order to encourage local businesses and industries). Korean giant Samsung does not manufacture products in the UK, but the company does have its European headquarters based in London and, with prices going up, the company’s phone upgrade program and sales look uncertain going forward.

This is the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Edition

We exclusively reported about the existence of the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Edition three months ago. Now, a press render of the device has surfaced on the Internet. Samsung is the worldwide partner for Rio 2016 Olympics.

Serial leaker Evan Blass has tweeted the first image of the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Edition earlier today. As you can see in the image, the device comes in black color with yellow trims for the loudspeaker and the home button, while blue trim can be found surrounding the camera sensor and the heart-rate monitor. There also seems to be an Olympics logo in blue at the back of the device.

We do not expect any change regarding internal hardware, but Samsung could bundle a special edition Gear VR with the device as the company had announced earlier this year that it would bring Olympics into the realm of virtual reality. Samsung could release a couple of apps that could help buyers experience Rio 2016 Olympics in virtual reality.
