Samsung launches Galaxy Tab E Lite and Galaxy Tab A 7.0 in Canada

Earlier today, Samsung launched its latest tablets, the Galaxy Tab E Lite and Galaxy Tab A 7.0, in Canada. The E Lite is only available in white and carries a price tag of $149.99, while the A 7.0 comes in black and white colorways with a slightly higher asking price of $199.99.

Both slates offer “child-friendly interfaces, endless entertainment options and multi-tasking functionality.” However, the Galaxy Tab A 7.0 boasts slightly more impressive specifications with its 7-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and a 4,00mAh battery.

The Galaxy Tab E Lite, on the other hand, features a 7-inch panel with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 3,600mAh battery. It also ships running Android 4.4 KitKat straight out of the box, whilst its souped up sibling bundles Android 5.1 Lollipop unboxed.

Apple claims court violated constitution by tossing $120 million verdict against Samsung

Last month Samsung finally bagged a win in its patent dispute with Apple. A May 2014 verdict that awarded $120 million in damages to Apple was reversed by the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The court held that Samsung did not infringe on Apple’s quick links patent and that two of Apple’s patents covering slide-to-unlock and auto-correct were invalid. Apple has now filed a petition for rehearing en banc before the court and it claims that the three-judge Federal Circuit panel violated the United States constitution by reversing the verdict.

Apple claims in the petition that the panel used materials that it researched itself instead of what was already a part of the trial court record. According to Apple, since the panel used materials it researched on its own, this act violated Apple’s Seventh Amendment right to have a jury and not an appellate court decide the facts of the case. This case is different from the one that’s now before the US Supreme Court, that one involves damages to the tune of $548 million.

Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro with a 5,000 mAh battery is set to launch in China

Samsung is surprising its customers by listening to their demands. It is releasing new smartphones with larger batteries than ever. The Galaxy S7 edge comes with a 3,600 mAh battery, while the Galaxy A9 comes with a whopping 4,000 mAh battery. However, the South Korean smartphone giant does not want to stop there.

Remember the Galaxy A9 Pro that we exclusively reported about a couple of months ago? Well, it is essentially a beefed-up version of the Galaxy A9, and it comes with a mammoth 5,000 mAh battery. It also gets an upgrade in terms of memory with 4GB of RAM. Other specifications include a 6-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a 16-megapixel primary camera with OIS, and an 8-megapixel secondary camera.

The Galaxy A9 Pro (SM-A9100), which will be launched in China soon, comes with a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 652 processor, 32GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion. It supports two SIM cards and has a fingerprint sensor embedded into its home button. Moreover, it runs Android 6.0.1 out of the box. Nothing has changed in terms of design and build though. It sports the same metal-and-glass design as other Galaxy A (2016) series devices.

Similar to the Galaxy A9, the Galaxy A9 Pro is set to be sold exclusively in China. It will be available in three colors: Pink, Rose Gold, and White. It is hands down the most powerful Galaxy A series device ever, and it is expected to retail for 3,499 Yuan (or roughly $540) in the country. Would you be interested in buying the Galaxy A9 Pro if Samsung launches it in your country?

How to claim a free Gear VR if you preordered the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge in India

Samsung bundled the Gear VR with Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge preorders in India, but the company didn’t ship the virtual reality headset with the smartphone. Instead, it will start shipping the Gear VR (worth INR 7,900) to customers within 90 days from March 18, 2016. If you had preordered a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in India, here’s how you can claim the Gear VR for free.

  1. Download the My Galaxy app from the Google Play Store on your new Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.
  2. Sign in using the same mobile number that you used for pre-booking and activating the device.
  3. Click the Gear VR banner (which will be available from April 5, 2016) in the My Galaxy app to generate a unique coupon code.
  4. You can use the coupon code to redeem the Gear VR at http://ift.tt/O9SCx8 only, on or before April 30, 2016.

If you’ve not enrolled in the My Galaxy app yet, you should do so before April 30, 2016, failing which you will not be eligible to receive the Gear VR for free. If you didn’t pre-book a Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, Samsung is offering a 50 percent discount on the Gear VR if you purchase its latest flagship smartphones through its official online store (http://ift.tt/O9SCx8).

Note: The My Galaxy app is available only in India. In other regions you should be able to pick up your free Gear VR directly from the store where you got your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge.

Samsung Q1 2016 earnings might beat expectations

Analysts are now predicting that Samsung might post better-than-expected earnings for the first quarter of 2016 largely aided by the stellar performance of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. First quarter operating profits for the Korean giant are expected to clock in at 6 trillion won or $5.14 billion, a nominal improvement over the 5.98 trillion won operating profit posted during the same period last year.

It was previously predicted that Samsung’s operating profit for Q1 2016 could drop to as low as the 4 trillion won mark owing to increased competition in the chip and home appliance markets. Brokerage houses are now making bullish estimates taking into account the robust sales performance of the Galaxy S7 across the globe. Combined shipments of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge are believed to have crossed the 10 million market in just a couple of weeks following the release of the new flagships, the previously flagships needed over a month to reach the same level. Samsung will provide its earnings guidance for the first quarter of 2016 on April 7.

[Poll] Is Samsung’s fast wireless charger available in your country?

Samsung introduced inbuilt wireless charging to its flagship lineup with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, then later took it a step further by putting fast wireless charging on the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5. The feature can also be found on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, but oddly, it looks like Samsung doesn’t want everyone to be taking advantage of fast wireless charging.

In many markets, Samsung’s official store doesn’t sell its fast wireless charger, and neither can it be ordered from local retailers. The same is the case for the new standing fast wireless charger for the S7 and S7 edge. Like the storage options for its phones, Samsung seems uninterested in making sure consumers around the world can take advantage of everything it has to offer with its top-of-the-line devices, and it’s frankly disappointing considering how much the company made of these features at its Unpacked events.

Do you have access to Samsung’s fast wireless charger in your country? If yes, did you order one for yourself? Let us know through the poll below and through the comments section!

Football legend Pelé is suing Samsung for $30 million

Brazilian football legend Pelé is suing Samsung for $30 million, claiming that the company broke off negotiations with him and used a look-alike in an advertisement that Samsung ran in The New York Times without his permission. The suit has been filed against the company this month in a federal court in Chicago. Samsung ran the ad back in October last year for its ultra high-definition TVs. Pelé’s claims that Samsung was previously negotiating with him to use his identity to promote its products.

The ad doesn’t mention Pelé but does include an image of a man who “very closely resembles” the football legend. There’s also a photo of a football player making a “modified bicycle or scissors-kick, perfected and famously used by Pelé,” claims the lawsuit. In a phone interview with Fortune, Pelé’s lawyer, Frederick Sperling, said that the goal here is to obtain fair compensation for the “unauthorized use of Pelé’s identity” and to prevent something like this from happening again in the future. Samsung has not yet commented on the matter.

Motion Photo Sharer for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge lets you share your Motion Photo captures

Samsung introduced the Motion Photo feature with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, which records a short video of moments before the one you’re trying to capture each time you click a picture. You can view these videos on the phone by pressing the play button at the top in the picture gallery, but Samsung forgot to implement an option that would let you share these motion photos. Thanks to a third-party app though, you can both save and share the videos captured by the Motion Photo feature.

Called Motion Photo Sharer, the app resides in the share menu on your device. To share motion photos, just open the gallery, press the share button on an image, select Motion Photo Sharer from the list, and then simply select save or share based on what you want to do with the video. Of course, remember that the Motion Photo feature only works if you have enabled it in the camera’s settings, otherwise the camera simply captures regular images like a camera is supposed to.

Grab Motion Photo Sharer from Google Play for your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge.

Pro mode on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge works even when video recording is active

The camera app on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge comes with Pro mode, a feature that is already available on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. However, the advantage on the new devices is that the feature works even when video recording is active. Yes, you can change certain settings manually while recording a video.

Once you activate the Pro Mode in the camera app (Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge), you can change the focus point, white balance, and aperture on the fly. You can even change the ISO or exposure, before hitting the record button. Moreover, there’s a provision to apply live filters to a video. Keep in mind though that you won’t be able to change the exposure value after setting the aperture.

Neither the Galaxy S6 nor the Galaxy Note 5 have this feature despite getting the Android 6.0 update. However, the Pro Mode for video on the Galaxy S7 still isn’t as advanced as the one found on the LG V10, in which you can even change the direction for audio recording. Have you tried the Pro Mode for recording videos on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge?
