BREAKING: Galaxy Fold gets Android 11 One UI 3.0 update

Just a week after releasing the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update for the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung has started updating the Z Fold 2’s predecessor. In fact, it seems the rollout kicked off early last week in France but was limited to Samsung’s Smart Switch software instead of going out over the air, though that should change in the coming days as the update is now available in the UAE as well.

Galaxy Fold owners in France and the UAE can now update to Android 11 by downloading the new firmware from our archives. It may also be available directly from the phone, which you can check by opening the Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. The update comes with firmware version F900FXXU4DUA1 and is only available for the international LTE variant at this time.

The update will introduce Android 11 features like chat bubbles, a conversation section in the notifications area, one-time permissions, and a dedicated media playback widget, along with a refreshed user interface and improved stock Samsung apps and a couple of other new features courtesy of One UI 3.0. The latest security patch is included as well.

It’s worth noting that some markets may not get Android 11 and One UI 3.0 before February, if Samsung’s official roadmap is to be believed. You can find the roadmap for your country in the Samsung Members app’s Notices section on your Galaxy Fold.

BREAKING: Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for bribery

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong has been sentenced to 2.5 years in jail for bribery. An appellate court in South Korea announced the sentence after a long trial, which also involved former President Park Geun-hye. Lee’s imprisonment comes as a huge shock to the tech giant and will create a leadership vacuum in the company.

Lee was facing legal charges for bribing an associate (Choi Soon-sil) of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye so that Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T could merge, allowing him to succeed his father and successfully control Samsung Electronics. The court said during the announcement of the prison sentence, “It is hard to say that Samsung’s compliance committee has met its effectiveness. It is inappropriate to reflect this in the sentencing.

Lee had been imprisoned earlier, and he spent more than a year in jail. He returned to his post in 2018, but the Supreme Court sent back the case to Seoul High Court last year, and his retrial began in October 2019. Samsung will most likely appeal again to be judged by the Supreme Court. However, since the Supreme Court had made the decision once previously, the verdict and the prison sentence will likely be final.

During the final phase of the retrial on December 30, 2020, the prosecutors had demanded a prison sentence of nine years. The prosecution had said, “For the sound development of our society, Samsung’s position is to show a firm attitude in corruption and set an example.” In a historic apology last year, Lee vowed to be the last leader in the company’s royal line, which started with his grandfather Lee Byung-chul.

Lee’s imprisonment will leave Samsung without firm leadership, which would make it hard for the company to run efficiently and compete with rival brands like Apple. Samsung Chairman, Lee Kun-hee, died three months ago, and his son Lee Jae-yong inherited a part of his $21 billion wealth, making him among the wealthiest in South Korea.

[List] Galaxy devices that have received Android 11/One UI 3.0 update

Only four months after officially announcing the One UI 3.0 update, Samsung already brought its custom Android 11 implementation to quite a few of its Galaxy devices. At least compared to the pace of its Android 10-based One UI 2.x deployment efforts which have been ongoing until this very month. And assuming we’re counting Android 11 beta builds, which we are.

As Samsung is expected to begin ramping up the development and release of various One UI 3.0 iterations, this is a fine time for us to start keeping detailed tabs on that endeavor. This would primarily constitute tracking the exact lineups and models that have already been updated, as well as the order in which that happened.

We will be updating this list on a regular basis, so feel free to bookmark it if you’re eager to embrace Samsung’s latest mobile OS ASAP. Our definition of that term is about to change soon, anyway, seeing how the One UI 3.1 update is right around the corner.

In case your device isn’t on the following list just yet, here is when you can expect the Android 11 party to start on your end. Keep in mind that releases usually take at least several weeks before going fully global, with the possible exception of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.

With that said, you can download the latest system images from our firmware archives almost as soon as Samsung makes them available.
