09-06-2016 Firmware Updates: Galaxy S5, Galaxy Grand Prime, Galaxy S7, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Samsung tells the Gear S3′s design story in new video

Samsung’s latest smartwatch is a story of refinement. The company has made a lot of tweaks to the Gear S2 which is already one of the best smartwatches it has ever made and transformed it into something even better with the Gear S3. Samsung took inspiration from classic analog Swiss timepieces to create what it calls a “timeless watch,” and the latest video that it has released walks us through the design story of the Gear S3.

The Gear S3 frontier has been designed to function as a modern sports watch that’s just as home in a boardroom as it is in the great outdoors while the Gear S3 classic is meant for young professionals who value practicality and appreciate a no-frills approach to their devices. There’s a clear distinction between both models and the design makes them stand out and shine in their own unique way. The overall premium look and feel is contributed by the stainless steel 316L case which is the most commonly used type of steel for Swiss watches. All this coupled with improved software make the Gear S3 one of the best smartwatches money can buy right now.

Alcatel’s standalone VR headset is powered by Samsung’s Exynos chipset

Samsung offers one of the best mobile VR headsets in the market right now with its Gear VR series. Now, the company has started offering its chipsets to other virtual reality headset manufacturers. The latest in the line is the Alcatel Vision, a standalone VR headset, which is powered by the Exynos 7420 octa-core SoC from Samsung.

The Exynos 7420 chipset, which uses Mali-T760 GPU, was first used in the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and later in the Galaxy Note 5. The Alcatel Vision is equipped with 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, two 3.8-inch AMOLED displays (each with a resolution of 1080×1200 pixels), and a 3,000 mAh battery. There’s no information on the platform this headset uses, but the device is expected to cost anywhere between €499-599.

Prior to Alcatel, DeePoon used the same Exynos 7420 chipset along with similar specifications in its M2 standalone VR headset. Looks like brands are preferring Samsung’s Exynos chipsets over solutions from other brands in their standalone VR headsets.

Oculus warns against using the Gear VR with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Samsung is getting all the unwanted attention after multiple reports of Galaxy Note 7 units getting exploded due to faulty batteries. Now, Oculus has warned Gear VR users against using the Galaxy Note 7 until Samsung replaces their units with the new ones. The company has also sent an email to Gear VR users with the same warning.

Samsung makes Gear VR headsets in collaboration with Facebook-backed Oculus. The new Gear VR, which was introduced along with the Galaxy Note 7 last month offers a wider field-of-view, better padding, a new touch-sensitive navigation area, and an adapter that can be used with microUSB as well as USB Type-C equipped smartphones.

Batteries from Samsung SDI won’t be used in the Galaxy Note 7 temporarily

After the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco, Samsung Electronics has decided to temporarily stop using batteries from Samsung SDI in the Galaxy Note 7. This news comes straight out of the company’s homeland South Korea. Various analysts predict that the Galaxy Note 7 recall could cost Samsung as much as $1 billion.

Samsung SDI provides around 70 percent of batteries used in the Galaxy Note 7. The rest of them are supplied by Chinese battery manufacturer ATL. After reports of explosions in multiple Galaxy Note 7 units due to faulty batteries, Samsung had to recall over two million units.

Samsung is expected to increase the order of battery units from ATL for the rest of the Galaxy Note 7 devices. Samsung SDI stock price has dropped 2.76 percent after reports of faulty batteries. Samsung SDI reportedly started developing non-removable batteries back in 2014 but failed to offer the required number of units for the Galaxy S6 as rivals ATL and LG Chemicals fared better in supplying the stock.

Lee Seung-hyuck, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, said, “For the global recall of 2.5 million units, Samsung SDI is expected to bear the expense for most of the battery parts. Together with the possible sales decline of Galaxy Note 7, Samsung SDI’s operating loss may stand at around 18 billion won ($16 million) in the third quarter.

Design patent shows Samsung is working on a smart ring

An application for a design patent reveals that Samsung is not only working on a smart ring, but that development is already well underway.

The patent application, filed in December of last year with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, shows a ring design with a volume rocker, buttons for answering a call, and possibly some kind of card slot. In the ring itself there seems to be one or more sensors for monitoring the wearer’s heart rate and perhaps other biosignals.

It’s worth pointing out the potential a ring like this holds for Samsung’s Gear VR, as tracking hand movement would be a welcome addition to the interface of the headset. Still, the patent application published today only addresses design, not functionality — so we can only guess what use cases Samsung has in mind for such a ring.

As always, we leave you with the remark that, despite this patent showing a smart ring in an advanced stage of development, there is no telling if and when Samsung will bring such a product to the market.

Here’s the most interesting Samsung news from last week

Samsung was very busy last week. Not only did it take the wraps off the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier, but it announced its recall program for the faulty Galaxy Note 7. Understandably, not all Samsung fans have the time to keep up to date with all the news that breaks in a week, but, fortunately, we’re on hand to help as we’ve created a magazine consisting of all the top stories we reported over the course of the past seven days.
