Samsung India teases Galaxy M31 with 64MP camera, huge battery

Samsung India has started teasing the imminent arrival of its first 2020 Galaxy M series phone for the Indian market. The company has put two popular Indian bloggers to the task of posting teasers about the Galaxy M31 on their social media handles and confirmed that the device will have a 64MP main rear camera and a big battery like its predecessors.

The only smartphone Samsung currently has on the market with a 64MP camera is the Galaxy A70s, which is priced in a higher segment than the company’s Galaxy M lineup. That would make a 64MP camera on the Galaxy M31 an impressive feat, especially if Samsung is able to price the phone as competitively as it did the Galaxy M30s. As for battery capacity, it remains to be seen if the M31’s battery capacity will be 5,000 mAh like the M30, 6,000 mAh like the M30s, or something even higher.

The Galaxy M31 is expected to feature four rear cameras in total, and we’re assuming the other three cameras will be a 5MP macro lens, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP depth sensor similar to the Galaxy A51. Under the hood, the Galaxy M31 will have the Exynos 9611 processor and 6GB of RAM, according to a benchmark listing for the phone, along with at least 64GB storage. It will run Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box and should receive an update to Android 11 and Android 12.

As we had exclusively reported earlier, Samsung has at least three Galaxy M series phones in development. The Galaxy M31 will be joined by the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M21 later in the year, though at this time it’s unclear when any of these phones will be unveiled. The Galaxy M31 will probably go official in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be on the lookout for any other teasers and details Samsung may provide in the lead up to the phone’s announcement.

Samsung refreshes Over The Horizon ringtone for Galaxy S20

Samsung usually refreshes its iconic ‘Over The Horizon’ ringtone every year, a few days before the launch of a new-generation Galaxy S series smartphone. This year, it recreated the ringtone for the Galaxy S20 series, and the company says it was inspired by nature.

Samsung believes that in this overly plugged-in and busy lifestyle, we can sometimes forget to take out time and just admire nature. So, it went ahead and created a fully acoustic version of its Over The Horizon ringtone to help bring you closer to the beauty of the natural world around us.

With the power of nature as the core inspiration, the South Korean firm has created a fresh new take of its ringtone. It placed monochords in various natural locations such as water streams to operate a rotor-and-pulley mechanism. As the water flows and the instrument rotates, it triggers monochords to pluck the strings at the appropriate times.

The resulting sound is solely created by the forces of nature. Samsung also added various natural sounds such as birds chirping, water flowing, and leaves rustling to the monochord melody. The use of electronic instruments has been kept to a bare minimum.

Just like last year, the company also made a video to go with the Over The Horizon 2020 ringtone. It captures the calm views from forests, grasslands, and coastal vistas.

Galaxy Note 20 could feature ‘fine-tuned’ 120Hz refresh rate technology

Samsung is yet to launch the Galaxy S20 series, but rumors related to the next Galaxy Note have started swirling already. We know that all of the features introduced with the Galaxy S20 series should make it to the Galaxy Note 20, but it’s the screen refresh rate technology that could see an improvement.

According to reputed leakster Ice Universe, Samsung will use a “more fine-tuned 120Hz refresh rate technology” on the Galaxy Note 20. While this statement is a bit ambiguous, we derive a few possibilities. First and foremost, it could be a case of the South Korean smartphone giant enabling 120Hz screen refresh rate feature even with QHD+ resolution, something that’s not possible on the Galaxy S20 series. This could make the S Pen feel faster and smoother.

The second possibility, and a distant second at that, could be the South Korean firm using variable refresh rate technology. This is something that we generally see on gaming PCs and gaming monitors. If this feature makes it to the Galaxy Note 20, it could be the first phone in the world to have a screen with a variable refresh rate. Only the newer iPad Pro tablets use a similar feature, which Apple calls ProMotion technology.

Right now, there are only a handful of smartphones that come with screens that have a 120Hz refresh rate. The two smartphones from Razer were the first ones with 120Hz refresh rate screens. The ASUS ROG Phone II was the first phone with an AMOLED screen and a 120Hz refresh rate. The POCO X2 and the Xiaomi Redmi K30 also have 120Hz LCD screens. The upcoming Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be the first Samsung phones to have a refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

Galaxy Buds+ specs leak shows longer battery life, dual drivers

Samsung’s upcoming truly wireless earphones, the Galaxy Buds+, are expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S20 series on February 11. Their design was leaked over a month ago, along with its pricing. Now, its complete specifications have been revealed, leaving nothing to the imagination.

The spec sheet of the Galaxy Buds, which was leaked by Evan Blass, shows that you get a lot of upgrades by spending just $20 more than the price of the Galaxy Buds. The upcoming $149 earphones feature a dual-driver audio setup, the ability to connect to multiple devices, an additional microphone for clearer calls, and longer battery life. Other new features include Spotify controls, a brand new iOS app, and two new exciting colors.

Longer battery life, improved audio quality, and two new colors

Just as we had exclusively reported, Samsung appears to have worked on improving the battery life of its new wireless earphones. Each earbud is fitted with an 85mAh battery, while the case hides a 270mAh battery within. The buds can provide up to 11 hours of music playback (vs. 6 hours on the Galaxy Buds) on a single charge and the case has enough juice left to recharge the buds once more, taking the total battery life figure to 22 hours (vs. 13 hours on the Galaxy Buds).

Due to the slightly bigger batteries, each earbud weighs a little more, at 6.3g. In comparison, the original Galaxy Buds weigh 5.6g. The fast charge feature allows 100 minutes of playtime after just 15 minutes of charging. The Galaxy Buds needed 3 minutes of charging for 60 minutes of playtime. The Galaxy Buds+ also retain the Qi wireless charging feature that is found on the Galaxy Buds.

While they lack active noise cancellation, the audio quality should see a considerable improvement, thanks to the presence of dual dynamic drivers (1 woofer + 1 tweeter). This is something that we generally don’t get to see on truly wireless earphones. From what we know, only the 1More True Wireless ANC and the Anker Soundcore Liberty 2 Pro use dual drivers. Call quality should be clearer, too, as the Galaxy Buds+ now feature an additional microphone on each earbud.

While the new earbuds feature the same Bluetooth version (5.0), they now support multi-device connections. It is possible that Samsung has implemented the new, Bluetooth LE Audio format. Apart from the usual controls (Play, Pause, Skip, Volume) via the touch pad, the Galaxy Buds+ can also control Spotify. Apart from black and white, the upcoming earphones will be launched in two new colors: blue and red.

If you’re an iOS user, you would be happy to know that Samsung is releasing a dedicated app for the iPhone so that you can customize the controls and see the battery level of the case and the individual buds. The Galaxy Buds+ will retain the Ambient Aware feature and the IPX2 rating that’s found on the Galaxy Buds. The South Korean smartphone giant could offer them for free in some markets if you pre-book the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Here’s the rundown of all the Galaxy Buds+ features and a comparison of their specifications as well as pricing with the Galaxy Buds.

Galaxy Buds+ leak through a new, upcoming iOS pairing app

The Galaxy Buds+ have been leaked, not through Samsung’s own landing pages like the Galaxy S20 series, but through what seems to be a brand new iOS application designed to pair the earphones with iPhones.

Several screenshots depicting the app and the Galaxy Buds+ have been shared on Twitter by leakers including @ishanagarwal24 and @MaxWinebach. The app can’t be found on the App Store at the time of this writing, but its logo is nearly identical to the logo of existing Samsung iPhone apps including Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit.

The ongoing Galaxy Buds don’t have an iOS app, but this will apparently change with the launch of the Buds+. The app seems to be able to show the battery levels of each earbud individually, and also informs users of how much charge there’s left in the carrying case. Likewise, the app seems to provide general information about the Galaxy Buds+ and it allows users to check for software updates.

Samsung might be able to steal some of Apple’s TWS market share

The Apple AirPods are the most popular totally wireless headphones in the world, but even so, the ongoing Galaxy Buds do offer some advantages over Apple’s product, such as a wireless charging case in the standard retail package. Despite this, the Galaxy Buds+ are rumored to launch for $149, which would be $10 lower than the base price for the AirPods 2. With the Galaxy Buds+ and a brand new dedicated iOS app on its way, Samsung seems to want and steal some of Apple’s wearable market share, or at least pose a bigger threat to Xiaomi by making it easier for iPhone users to choose the Galaxy Buds+ as their wireless audio solution.

The Galaxy Buds+ should be unveiled on February 11 along with the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip. The new earphones are also likely to be offered for free to those who’ll pre-order the Galaxy S20 Ultra, at least in some markets. As for the iOS app itself, it remains to be seen if Samsung will launch it on the same day as the hardware itself, or if it will arrive in the App Store later down the line. We’ll keep you posted.

More Samsung Galaxy S20 US carrier prices leak, AT&T to undercut rivals

More pricing details for the Galaxy S20 series in the USA have emerged through unofficial channels. YouTuber Jon Prosser claims to have found out about the US prices from sources within Verizon and Samsung, and he shared the bulk of these details in a few new tweets.

Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S20 lineup will be offered by Verizon Wireless at the same prices as T-Mobile, i.e., $999, $1,199, and $1,399 for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra, respectively. The same prices reportedly apply to the unlocked models sold by Samsung in the USA, but interestingly enough, AT&T customers might be able to buy the flagship at a lower price.

According to the source, AT&T will offer the 5G trio of flagships for $899, $1,099, and $1,299. It’s not clear if these will be the sticker prices but given that they’re lower than the prices commanded by Samsung for the unlocked variants, it’s likely that AT&T will run some sort of promotion whereby customers can get a $100 rebate or gift card.

It’s not clear, but $100 is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to smartphone prices, and so far, AT&T seems to have the upper hand over its competitors.

The Galaxy S20 series will be unveiled at Unpacked on February 11 when Samsung will reveal how it wants to change the shape of the future. It may take a few additional weeks before the flagship will ship to customers, giving carriers and the OEM plenty of time to capitalize on their pre-order offers.

Samsung Brazil replenishes Galaxy Fold stock today, be prepared!

If you’ve missed your opportunity to buy the Galaxy Fold in Brazil when it was released last month, fret not, as you’re now getting your second chance. Samsung Brazil confirmed that a new Galaxy Fold batch has been shipped to the country, and the foldable hybrid is once again in stock and available for purchase from the company’s official website.

The official announcement is fresh and, at the time of this writing, the ‘registration’ option shown on the online store page has not yet been replaced with the ‘buy’ button. This should change by the end of the day when prospective Galaxy Fold buyers in Brazil will be able to tap into the new stock and acquire the premium device for R$12,999, or the rough equivalent of $3,100.

Indeed, the Galaxy Fold’s launch price in Brazil hasn’t changed at all since January. It’s impressive to see how, despite the $1,000 premium over the original price in other markets, the Galaxy Fold was sold out in less than 24 hours of availability. It would be even better if Samsung could share the exact sales figures for each market, but the company has been very quiet on this front and was only able to confirm that it sold between 400,000 and 500,000 Galaxy Fold units worldwide throughout 2019.

Time will tell if the Galaxy Fold will be able to maintain its momentum after Samsung unveils the Galaxy Z Flip next week. It very well could, given that the Z Flip is a different take on the foldable concept instead of a true sequel to the OG Fold. The direct sequel is expected to arrive in the second half of the year.

Flagship-flavored Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite launch in Spain

Samsung has launched the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite in Spain. The former is available for €659 while the latter model costs €609. This is likely not the first time you hear about these Lite variants, but if it is then you might find these prices to be too low for the Galaxy S and Note brands.

That’s because the S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite follow a new philosophy compared to Samsung’s usual flagship phones. These new models aim to bring flagship-grade features and characteristics down to a more affordable price range. As far as we’re concerned, Samsung has succeeded in this goal, at least as far as the Galaxy S10 Lite is concerned. It impressed us in our review and it left a long-lasting impression.

We didn’t get to spend any time with the Note 10 Lite yet, but there’s simply no other cheaper alternative to getting an S Pen-enabled Galaxy device. If the stylus is the main selling point for you then the Galaxy Note 10 Lite should be a very interesting proposition.

Samsung Spain is launching the Galaxy S10 Lite in Prism White, Prism Black, and Prism Blue. The device can be acquired from Amazon or Worten for €659, while MediaMarkt offers it for €706. It’s also available on Fnac for €659, but Fnac members benefit from a 5% discount which brings the price down to €629. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite doesn’t have the store page up yet but it should go live at any moment. The phablet will launch in Aura Glow, Aura Black, and Aura Red.

  • Model: SM-G770F
  • Dimensions: 75.6 x 162.5 x 8.1mm
  • Display: 6.7" (170.1mm) Infinity-O Super AMOLED

Samsung landing pages rashly confirm Galaxy S20 naming scheme

With only one week left before Samsung takes the veil off the Galaxy S20 series at Galaxy Unpacked, a handful of first-party cases have now started getting their own dedicated online pages on a couple of portals, including Samsung Germany and Belgium.

These pages don’t contain any pictures of the products but they confirm the names of these accessories. More importantly, these pages represent strong confirmation that Samsung’s next flagship series will follow the ‘Galaxy S20’ naming convention.

Samsung prematurely confirms ‘Galaxy S20’ naming, except for the Ultra

If there was still doubt in your mind regarding Samsung’s decision to skip the Galaxy S11-through-S19 and name its next flagship series the ‘Galaxy S20’ then these official landing pages discovered by Mobile Fun should be proof enough of this truly being the case.

But while both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ have been acknowledged by Samsung through these pages, the Galaxy S20 Ultra moniker has been omitted, oddly enough.

The Galaxy S20 LED Cover, Clear Cover, and Protective Standing Cover have received their dedicated pages, and so have the Clear View Cover and Smart LED Cover for the Galaxy S20+.

Meanwhile, Samsung published the page of only one case option for the so-called Galaxy S20 Ultra, and it doesn’t mention the smartphone’s moniker anywhere. Instead, the page contains only the EF QG988 model number which should correspond to a Clear Cover design.

That’s not to say the pinnacle of the flagship range won’t be called the ‘Galaxy S20 Ultra.’ It very likely will, but until Samsung confirms this, there’s always a chance – even a remote one – that the phone may be called something different, especially because the company appears to be reluctant towards disclosing its name, more so than it is in regards to the Galaxy S20 and S20+.

Whatever the case may be, the series as a whole should offer an even wider variety of first and third-party cases, although third-party options might be limited at launch.

The Galaxy A51 has been on sale in markets around the world for a little over a month now, and it was also launched in many countries as recently as last week. Samsung has now released a software update for the device in some countries. This update, firmware version A515FXXU1ASL6, brings improvements to camera stability and the December security patch.

Some countries already this update pre-installed on the Galaxy A51

It bears mentioning that in some markets, the Galaxy A51 already comes with this firmware out of the box, so the update is only for markets where the phone was running an older version of the software. Galaxy S20 pre-order and pricing details for South Korea emerge

There’s really not much left that we don’t already know about the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Many Samsung fans are now more interested in finding out just how much the new flagship series will cost in their market.

Samsung will confirm pricing details for all markets after the Unpacked event on February 11. A new report from South Korea offers some information about the Galaxy S20 pre-order and pricing details for Samsung’s home country.

Galaxy S20 pre-order and pricing details for South Korea

According to the report, Samsung will start accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy S20 series in South Korea on February 14. The handset will be released to the public on March 6, an expected Galaxy S20 release date that we have heard previously as well.

SK Telecom, KT and LG U+, the three major carriers in South Korea, will be taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S20 series from February 14 to 28, according to the report. KT will apparently get an exclusive red color option for the Galaxy S20+. Samsung is known to offer color exclusives to carriers in South Korea and it’s likely going to do that for the Galaxy Z Flip as well.

Prices for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra are said to start from 1.25 million ($1052), 1.35 million ($1136) and 1.6 million ($1350) won respectively. Prices can vary greatly by market so a simple conversion of the aforementioned figures won’t provide you with an accurate representation of what the Galaxy S20 series will cost in your country.

A separate report from South Korea mentions that the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung’s next foldable smartphone, is going to cost 1.6 million won in South Korea. That’s within the expected $1300-$1500 price range for this device in other markets across the globe.

Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip on February 11 at its Unpacked event in San Francisco.
