Galaxy A52 and A52 5G get May 2021 update, here’s what’s new

Samsung’s been on an impressive streak with the May 2021 security release for many of its Galaxy devices. Today, the company is bringing all the latest security fixes to two of its most flagship-like mid-range phones ever: the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A52 5G. Depending on your device, the new firmware version should be A525xXXU2AUE1 or A526BXXU2AUE1, with the rollout already underway in a more than a handful of markets, though mostly in the European continent at this time.

What’s new in Galaxy A52 and A52 5G May 2021 update?

The changelog for the latest Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52 5G updates is pretty large. Samsung is promising Quick Share improvements and improvements to the touch screen’s stability, camera performance, and call quality, although some of those were a part of the changelog for the previous update as well.

The actual highlight, then, is the addition of video call effects. This feature was recently introduced to the Galaxy A72 as well and lets you blur out or set a custom image as the background in video calls made over apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Duo. It can be accessed from the phone’s Settings » Advanced features menu.

As usual, the update’s rollout will be staggered, which means it may take a few days to arrive on your phone. However, you can manually check if it’s available now by opening the phone’s settings, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. The latest firmware is also available in our archive and can be used to manually upgrade the Galaxy A52/A52 5G using a Windows PC.

Samsung, the Galaxy Watch 3 deserves an optional Wear OS upgrade

Rumors about Samsung wanting to switch to Google’s Android-based operating system for smartwatches have been floating around since 2018 but, it’s 2021, and Samsung has finally decided to abandon its in-house-developed smartwatch platform in favor Google’s Wear OS.

Well, the official narrative around this massive change is that Samsung isn’t abandoning Tizen OS outright, but that the platform (or the spirit of Tizen) is merging with Google’s Wear OS later this year in anticipation of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 release.

While hardcore Tizen OS enthusiasts might be disappointed by this initiative, it actually sounds like there is a lot of potential for greatness here. Samsung hasn’t just sold out to Google by abandoning its own platform, but rather, the Korean tech giant is lending its expertise to Google while benefitting from improved third-party app support. A unified wearable platform designed by more than one expert doesn’t sound bad at all.

Of course, we won’t know for sure how all of this will work out until these changes take place, but I’m looking forward to Tizen-Wear OS and hoping that Samsung’s wearable ecosystem will grow as a result of this merger.

There’s but one problem, though, and it’s the fact that Samsung’s most recent smartwatch is being left behind. Sort of… Maybe not, but it certainly feels that way.

Samsung’s software support promise doesn’t sound very promising

Samsung confirmed yesterday that its older Tizen OS smartwatches will continue to be supported for at least three years from the product’s release.

“For customers who already own the Tizen OS based Galaxy smartwatches, we are continuing to provide at least three years of software support after the product launch” Samsung said shortly after Google I/O.

In other words, the original Galaxy Watch should receive software support until August this year, while the Galaxy Watch Active and Active 2 will be supported at least until 2022. And because the Galaxy Watch Active 3 was released in August 2020, it has a little over two years left on the clock.

The bigger question, however, is to what extent will Samsung support these devices? We can be sure that they’ll receive security patches along the way, but how far will Samsung go to develop new features for an operating system that has an expiration date of two+ years on it?

Let’s imagine that Samsung will remain dedicated to Tizen OS for the next couple of years, and any new important feature added to WearOS over this time period will also be ported to Tizen OS. This is the ideal scenario in which Galaxy Watch 3 owners will get the most out of their newly-purchased smartwatch, but I doubt that Samsung will make this ideal scenario happen.

Tizen OS is unlikely to match Wear OS three years from now

I’m not a betting man, but if I were, I’d wager that Samsung will support the Galaxy Watch 3 with security patches and maybe a few new extra features over the years. Perhaps Samsung will even try to match the visuals of Tizen OS with Wear OS.

But improved third-party app support will certainly be missing, and this issue might be compounded, given that some of the existing third-party app developers are bound to spend more time and resources developing apps for Samsung’s newer smartwatches that run a different OS. They won’t be spending a lot of time on a sinking ship.

Whatever the case may be, Samsung’s short statement regarding three years of support doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. The Galaxy Watch 3 isn’t even one year old, and it might soon be relegated to security and minor patches if Samsung won’t go above and beyond with its promised three-year software support.

If only Samsung could offer an optional Wear OS firmware upgrade…

I never thought that Samsung wouldn’t offer an upgrade to Wear OS for some of its newer smartwatches, or at the very least, the Galaxy Watch 3. And, to be fair, we don’t know much about the upcoming version of Wear OS and how the platform will change with Samsung’s influence. There is a chance that the existing hardware might not be good or powerful enough to handle whatever innovative features Wear OS may or may not bring.

Perhaps it’s not technically feasible to offer a Wear OS upgrade for the Galaxy Watch 3, but we know that Samsung is capable of switching operating systems mid-cycle. Let’s not forget that the Galaxy Gear was released in 2013, running an Android-based OS with a simple UI, but was updated to Tizen in 2014, right around the time Wear OS (formerly known as Android Wear) debuted.

Now, you could argue that the upgrade from that forked version of Android to Tizen was a lot more significant than it would be switching from Tizen to Wear OS. But I can’t look past the fact that the Galaxy Watch 3 — a fairly expensive smartwatch, especially if you consider the Titanium version — is not even ten months old, and yet, it will soon run an operating system that’s on its last legs.

Barring any technical limitations that might be at play, I believe that offering an optional upgrade to Wear OS for the Galaxy Watch 3 — at least — would only be fair. Otherwise, the only way Samsung will make Tizen OS worth it for the Galaxy Watch 3 is if the soon-to-be-abandoned platform will somehow keep up with Wear OS for the next three years.

Are you happy with Samsung’s arguably vague promise of continued software support for three or so years, knowing that there’s a chance of no new major features coming your way? Or would you prefer if Samsung would offer the option to install Wear OS on the Galaxy Watch 3? Feel free to share your thoughts below.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and Galaxy Note 9 bag the May 2021 security update

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite was secured with the March 2021 security patch a couple of months ago when the big One UI 3.1 firmware update made its debut, and Samsung is now improving the tablet’s security through a new update. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is now one of Samsung’s latest devices to enjoy the May 2021 security update, and its accompanied by one of Samsung’s 2018 smartphone models, namely the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and Galaxy Note 9 owners in Europe should receive an update notification at any moment, though as usual, availability will gradually expand to include an increasingly number of markets.

France appears to be among the first European countries to gain access to the new Galaxy Tab S6 Lite firmware, but there may be more. Galaxy Tab S6 Lite owners can identify the update by firmware number P61xXXU4CUE1. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 9 firmware update carries version N960FXXU8FUE1.

Both firmware versions hint at new features possibly being included with the new update, though we were unable to confirm. Worth noting is that the May security patch that was released for several other Galaxy devices — including the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Note 10 — did bring Quick Share and Camera improvements. It is possible that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and / or the Galaxy Note 9 might be enjoying these enhancements as well.

Samsung smartphone / tablet owners can check if the new update is available for download from the Settings app, but they can also download the new update files from our firmware archive and install them manually on their Galaxy devices using a Windows PC.

Samsung celebrates Google Duo launch on Neo QLED TVs with new video

When Samsung unveiled its 2021 smart TV lineup at CES, it confirmed that the brand-new Neo QLED smart TV series will boast various software features such as Super Ultrawide GameView, Samsung Health, as well as Google Duo. The inclusion of Google’s video conferencing app is most welcomed in the era of working from home. The app is now available for select Neo QLED models, and Samsung has marked its debut with a new promotional video.

Most of you already know what Google Duo is, but for those who might be unaware, Google Duo is a video chat mobile app that has built-in video conferencing capabilities. Why does Samsung need Google Duo when it has its own video conferencing solution called Knox Meeting? Well, Knox Meeting is an enterprise-grade solution that not many non-business customers know about, whereas Google Duo is fit for consumer and enterprise applications alike.

Don’t forget your USB webcam

Although the release of Google Duo on the Neo QLED range of smart TVs is most welcomed, particularly in this day and age, it’s worth reminding that none of Samsung’s 2021 QLED TVs feature a built-in webcam.

Therefore, setting up Google Duo on a Samsung smart TV is as easy as downloading the app from the Store and installing it on the TV, as detailed by the company’s support page on the topic. However, being able to use Google Duo at its full potential is another matter, and for this, users will have to attach a USB webcam to their Neo QLED TVs before they can start video conferencing.

Samsung was selling the Full HD VG-STC5000 webcam accessory for smart TVs a few good years ago but that product is no longer on sale given its age, so your best bet is probably a third-party solution.

Samsung Internet gets powerful privacy features and custom font support

Samsung offers its own internet browser for its devices. It’s a pretty robust option. Samsung Internet has been updated today with a handful of new features. Powerful new privacy features have been introduced with this update alongside some cosmetic changes.

There are a lot of features that Samsung Internet has which make it an even better browser than Chrome, apart from its obvious limitation of only being available for mobile devices. That being said, most users who start using Samsung Internet don’t feel like switching to another browser.

New Samsung Internet update rolling out today

A big reason for that is the feature set that Samsung has built for its browser. It continues to improve the browser even further. This gives users an incentive to stick around. The new features that it has released today were previously introduced with a Samsung Internet Beta build a couple of months ago. They have now made it to the stable version.

Samsung Internet version 14.0.3.5 has been released today. It brings the Security Control Panel which provides key stats about your online privacy. A simple UI shows how many items and trackers were blocked during browsing. The UI also contains easy to understand toggles for blocking pop-ups and backward redirects.

Smart Anti Tracking 3.0 is included in this update as well. This privacy feature uses on-device machine learning to identify website trackers and remove them. Version 3.0 of Smart Anti Tracking now protects against first-party redirection-based trackers. It does that by clearing cookies at scheduled intervals.

Lastly, custom font support is now in the stable version of Samsung Internet. If you use a custom font on your device, Samsung Internet will now apply it to all web pages you visit.

The updated version of Samsung’s browser is now rolling out. Alternatively, you can also grab the Samsung Internet version 14.0.3.5 APK from our database.

New relief efforts: Samsung still committing millions to save Indian lives

Samsung’s hands-on involvement in pandemic relief efforts across India are still going strong, some 18 months in. Southwest Indian state Karnataka is the latest in a long list of regions to which the company managed to deliver something in the way of substantial support. The local government was thus provided with critical supplies, including a variety of pure oxygen reserves. More specifically, the aid came in the form of 24 oxygen concentrators, 150 oxygen cylinders, and 14,000 medical kits .

All mission-critical, all guaranteed to quite literally save lives in the days ahead. The supplies have been delivered from South Korea which largely managed to stabilize from last year’s global health crisis. India, unfortunately, does not have the luxury of relative geographical isolation and is nearly 70 times the size of Samsung’s home country, population-wise.

Samsung seems adamant to outlast this crisis

As a result, what’s technically the aftermath of arguably the worst health crisis in at least a century served as a prelude to one another such natural disaster in the Far East. Samsung has been extremely involved in relief efforts across not just India, but pretty much all the rest of the world’s outbreak hotspots, as well.

This has been the case since day one, through thick and thin, which gets kind of confusing to tell from one another if you’re looking at secondary factors such as stock performance, bless its schizophrenic movements.

Apart from Samsung India, this latest move to assist local authorities in getting a grip on recent developments and long-standing developments was also helped by Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore and the Shrimad Rajchandra Sarvamangal Trust, both of which helped boost the number of total medical supplies delivered to Karnataka.

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite leaks in new renders along with a tentative price

The upcoming Galaxy Tab A7 Lite has once again been spotted in a series of leaked renders. The images are accompanied by a list of specifications, some of which have been subjected to leaks before, and the source suggests that the budget tablet will be true to the segment and hit the shelves in Europe for around 150 euros.

The recent leak reconfirms Samsung’s intentions to release the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in at least two color options: black and silver. The tablet should be equipped with an 8.7-inch LCD display with an unusual resolution of 1,340 by 800 pixels.

Low-end specs for a low-cost tablet

For a tablet that’s rumored to hit the market for roughly 150 euros, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite promises to deliver a basic multimedia experience enabled by a MediaTek MT8768-based (Helio P22T) chipset and 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Storage options consist of 32GB and 64GB, and the device will offer expandable storage through a microSD card slot.

The tablet is rumored to carry a 3.5mm headphone jack and two stereo speakers. The main camera has a resolution of 8MP and the selfie sensor — positioned for portrait mode — clocks in at a mere 2MP.

The tablet should also boast GPS and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, and Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in Wi-Fi-only and LTE flavors. In both cases, the hardware is said to be powered by a 5,100mAh battery with 15W charging.

Samsung has started using AI to design and improve OLED manufacturing

Samsung Display is working on developing a new OLED display manufacturing method using AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning technologies in an attempt to improve production yields and decrease manufacturing times, revealed the company at SID Display Week 2021.

The importance of AI technology in the display industry will increase in the future, said CEO of CAE, which is a Canadian-based manufacturer of simulation and modeling technologies. Samsung Display is already working on implementing new AI manufacturing technologies, and the company’s CEO confirmed that Samsung Display has in fact recently introduced AI (artificial intelligence) technology in key areas of panel development’ for the purpose of increasing manufacturing efficiency.

AI can design the molecular structure of 100 organic materials in only 30 seconds

Samsung Display has revealed that OLED is the most representative area where AI technology has been introduced. For example, engineers used to design backplane materials by changing molecular structures to find the desired structural characteristics, but with the help of AI, engineers can now preset the desired characteristic values ahead of time. The AI then simulates various cases until it finds the correct answer.

This method can drastically improve OLED manufacturing times, as it takes only 30 seconds for the AI to design the molecular structure of 100 organic materials.

More so, production yields are also said to be improved by AI, especially in regards to high-resolution OLED panels. As a display’s resolution increases to 4K and 8K, the rate of malfunction for these panels increases exponentially. However, with the help of AI, Samsung engineers can design and verify 640,000 driving circuits every day, using only a server computer equipped with a 64-core CPU.

Move over: Galaxy A50 now getting May 2021 security patch

The Galaxy A50 is the newest Samsung device to receive the May 2021 security update. Or rather, the newest to have started receiving it, seeing how the said patch has only started rolling out. More specifically, we’re looking at the a build version A505USQSCDUE2 which was assigned to an over-the-air upgrade first distributed by Comcast earlier today.

But you should be getting the new update no matter what carrier you’re on. Of course, with this being the U.S. we’re talking about, consumers are still at the mercy of the telecom industry. The one that so far hasn’t felt terribly incentivized to be following Samsung’s leadership in Android updates.

Has the influx of security updates in the U.S. increased?

It does seem like there have been a few more U.S.-bound updates for Galaxy smartphones than usual lately. Samsung’s flagships especially have been enjoying a slightly increased frequency of these security releases. Well, most of them, anyway. At least Samsung U.S. has been going bonkers with all the amazing-value deals that are still going on at the moment.

So it’s not all doom and gloom, especially given the fact that anyone not too thrilled with the idea of waiting can also attempt triggering the download manually and see if they get lucky. To that end, you can open the system Settings app, proceed to the Software update section, and then pick – what else but the – Download and install option on the following interface.

And then there’s our firmware archive for the most experienced Galaxy owners that allows them to download and flash full system images containing the very latest firmware

Turns out Samsung does have the new Galaxy M52 5G in development

Samsung is launching a lot of low-end and mid-range smartphones these days. It’s seeing a lot of growth in this segment of the market so the company is responding accordingly. However, there’s some overlap between the different models on offer.

It was first reported a couple of months ago that the Galaxy M52 5G is in the pipeline. Samsung eventually released the Galaxy M42 5G which itself is essentially a rebadged Galaxy A42 5G. Now, though, it may finally be the Galaxy M52 5G’s turn.

The Galaxy M52 5G may arrive by August

The folks at GalaxyClub hear that Samsung is indeed working on a successor to the popular Galaxy M51. The assumption is that this could be the device that was originally developed under the model number SM-M425F. Something similar happened with the Galaxy M41 which ended up being launched as the Galaxy M51.

No further details about the actual Galaxy M52 5G are available as yet, except that it will have a 64-megapixel main camera. What most people will be interested in finding out is whether it will have a massive 7,000mAh battery like the Galaxy M51. For the sake of continuity, it just might. It’s unclear if Samsung may offer an LTE variant of the Galaxy M52 as well.

We can expect more information about the device to surface in the coming weeks. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M51 in August last year. A similar timeline can also be expected for its successor. There’s also reason to believe that the Galaxy M52 5G will be offered in Europe. This will put this mid-range 5G smartphone in the reach of a much larger customer base.

US companies are now pushing for Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong’s pardon

Lee Jae-yong, heir to the Samsung group and the richest person in South Korea is serving out a 2.5 year sentence in jail. His sentence was handed down earlier this year. Since he’s not appealing the decision, he will serve out the entire sentence in jail.

The only way out for him now is through a pardon granted by the President of South Korea. The momentum has been building gradually over the past couple of months. Many in South Korea are in favor of a pardon for Lee Jae-yong. Now, even US companies are throwing their weight behind the idea.

Samsung is a key partner for the US semiconductor industry

Business leaders in South Korea have been calling on the government to grant a pardon to the Samsung heir. Even Buddhist monks in the country have expressed their support. South Korea’s president Moon Jae-in has said that he remains open to the possibility.

Such a decision will likely have political ramifications. That would be just one of the aspects that the government will consider. A recent poll showing that the majority of South Koreans are in favor of a pardon for Lee Jae-yong should help his chances.

American companies are now urging President Moon Jae-in to pardon Lee Jae-yong. The American Chamber of Commerce feels that the top man at Samsung can help President Joe Biden in his efforts to reduce American dependence on chips produced in foreign countries. The US president has been pushing an ambitious $50 billion plan to revitalize the country’s semiconductor industry. The aim is to make the US self-sufficient in chip production.

A letter by the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea to President Moon Jae-in points out that South Korea’s position as a strategic partner to the US would be at risk if Samsung, the biggest chipmaker in the world, wasn’t more fully engaged in supporting their president’s efforts.

Samsung is already one of the biggest investors in the semiconductor industry of the US. It already has a chipmaking factory in Austin and has also selected it as the site for its new $17 billion factory.

The stars seem to be aligning for Lee Jae-yong. Ultimately the decision rests with President Moon Jae-in and he’s keeping his cards pretty close to his chest for now.

Lockdowns have disrupted one of Samsung’s biggest phone factories

Going back to work amid the COVID19 pandemic has been challenging. With some countries experiencing a second or even third wave, lockdowns have been imposed yet again to curb the spread.

This makes it impossible for companies to avoid any disruption to their businesses. They’re unable to run their offices, retail locations and factories at full capacity. It puts a massive drain on the business, but it can’t be avoided. Samsung is facing a similar situation in India.

The second wave has disrupted operations at the factory

India is in the midst of a brutal second COVID19 wave. Strict lockdowns have been imposed. There are also restrictions on the online sales of non-essential products. So even though demand exists for its phones, Samsung has been unable to sell as many units as it could have.

Samsung also uses India as a manufacturing base. It has one of its biggest mobile device manufacturing factories in the country. Production at the factory has reduced significantly due to the restrictions in place.

The company is currently opening its factory only three days a week. The factory doesn’t just make products to meet local demand. It exports to other markets as well. At this rate, it may only be able to meet global demand.

There’s only so much that Samsung can do at this time. It has to respect the restrictions that have been imposed. Breaking the chain of transmission is of the utmost importance. The faster that can happen, the sooner the lockdowns will lift.
