Galaxy Fold getting January 2020 security update

Samsung has brought the January 2020 security patch to yet another flagship device, following a release for the Galaxy S10 series and Galaxy Note 10 series a few days back. The Galaxy Fold is now receiving a new update that bundles the latest Android security patch, which was detailed by Samsung earlier today. Sporting build number F900FXXS2ASL6, the update is rolling out in France and should make its way to other markets in the next few days.

The update brings no new features, improvements, or changes; only the latest security patch is included. Galaxy Fold owners are likely to have to wait until the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update before they see their foldable phone-cum-tablet gain new features. The Fold is scheduled to get Android 10 in April, which is quite late for a $2000 device but is in keeping with the lackluster support the Fold has received since it went on sale, especially for the 5G model.

Of course, security updates are just as important as feature updates, so you should download the latest one for your Galaxy Fold as soon as possible. To do so, open the Settings app on the device, select Software update, then tap Download and install to update it over the air. You can also update by installing the latest firmware on your Fold after downloading it from our firmware archive.

Samsung Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 Indian pricing leaked

Samsung is yet to make the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 official for the Indian market, but a report from 91Mobiles has revealed the possible pricing for the two handsets. The Galaxy A51 price for India will be set at Rs 22,990 for the 6GB+128GB configuration, while the Galaxy A71 will be priced at Rs 29,990 for the base model, which sports 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Despite some of the upgraded specs, the A51 and A71 aren’t going to be much costlier than the A50 and A70 if the report is accurate. In fact, the Galaxy A50 was also launched for Rs 22,990 for the variant that offered 6GB RAM, but that variant only had 64GB of storage. The Galaxy A50s was launched at around the same price as well for the 4GB+128GB variant, so the Galaxy A51 looks set to be a considerably better deal from day one.

Again, that depends on whether or not the prices reported are correct, which cannot be confirmed until Samsung makes an official announcement. There’s no word on when the company plans to launch the A51 and A71 in India, but posters promoting the phones have been spotted in some Samsung stores in the country’s capital, so the announcement and release date probably aren’t far away.

Are you looking forward to the Galaxy A51 or Galaxy A71? Let us know down in the comments, and don’t forget to check out this specs comparison to see how the two phones compare on paper and also see our first impressions of the Galaxy A51 in our hands-on preview.

Samsung monthly updates: January 2020 security patch detailed

After updating nearly a dozen devices with the January 2020 security patch between late December and the start of this week, Samsung has detailed the vulnerabilities that have been fixed with the latest patch. The January 2020 patch fixes five critical vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system, along with a number of high and moderate-risk vulnerabilities.

It also fixes 17 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items, which are vulnerabilities that are specific to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. One of the most severe vulnerabilities among those allowed brute force attacks on the lock screen password on devices with the Exynos 7885, Exynos 8895, and Exynos 9810 chipsets under the hood. Apparently, this vulnerability had first been fixed all the way back in May last year but required a more concrete solution, which has been included in the January 2020 patch.

As mentioned above, Samsung has already updated a few devices with the latest security patch, and more Galaxy phones and tablets will get it through updates in the coming weeks. You can always check if an update is available for your device from the Software update menu of its settings and by keeping an eye on our firmware archive and our news section, where we cover new security updates as and when they get released for various Galaxy device.

Samsung Ballie is a tiny rolling robot with advanced AI and BB-8 vibes

Samsung showed off an interesting product during its CES 2020 keynote today in Las Vegas. It kicked things off with the Samsung Ballie, a small rolling robot that gives off major BB-8 vibes. For those who don’t get the Star Wars reference, Ballie will follow you around in the home and help out with tasks.

Ballie appears to be a prototype concept at this point in time but it will eventually be offered as a consumer product. Some of the possibilities that Samsung has highlighted at CES do make it seem that Ballie will play an integral part in the smart home of the future.

Samsung Ballie is designed to be your life companion

Samsung didn’t provide any details of the technology inside Ballie but it evidently has a camera and other sensors that allow it to recognize its owner and follow them around. Samsung says that Ballie will be “actively helpful” around the house. The examples highlighted show Ballie opening smart blinds in the morning and controlling other smart home products like Samsung’s robot vacuum.

Samsung’s H.S. Kim gave a short on-stage demo of the robot during his keynote. It seemingly used the camera to track and follow him around the stage, giving off chimes in response to his voice commands, and even rolling right into his hands when he called for it.

Using its advanced On-Device artificial intelligence capabilities, Ballie can also help out as a fitness assistant. On-Device AI is crucial for gaining customers’ trust in a product that has a camera and follows them around in their home. Samsung will likely elaborate further on data safety standards for Ballie when this concept becomes a reality.

Samsung envisions that such robots to become our “life companions.” It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how Samsung takes this concept forward. No additional information has been revealed about Ballie, so it’s unclear when this robot will be launched and how much it’s going to cost.

Samsung’s truly wireless TV exists! But it’s too early to bring it at CES 2020

Aside from unveiling its brand new TV models at CES 2020, Samsung has also confirmed it developed a truly wireless TV that doesn’t require to be plugged into a wall socket. Instead, the TV transfers electrical current wirelessly, and it seems to do so using magnetic resonance wireless charging technology or similar.

Samsung revealed that its proof-of-concept can receive electrical current from a distance of up to 2 meters from the power supply.

Wireless Samsung TV is real, but it’s not coming to CES 2020

Rumors of Samsung developing a truly cordless TV emerged early last year when a patent revealed the base concept. As usual, patent applications may or may not translate into real products, but this time around, Samsung seems to be serious about turning this concept into reality.

This mysterious wireless Samsung TV already exists, according to the president of Samsung’s Visual Display division, Hang Jong-hee, cited by the Yonhap News Agency. He revealed more about the project at CES and confirmed that the proof-of-concept will not be shown at the event in Las Vegas this year as it would require ‘some construction work on the walls.’

Of course, it would be silly to think that the CES show floor and infrastructure are the main reasons why this groundbreaking product isn’t part of Samsung’s presentation this year. Especially considering the fact that Samsung has the largest CES booth on site. The real reason, judging by Hang Jong-hee’s words, is that there’s still work to be done before the truly wireless TV will be ready for the consumer market.

Wireless power transfer currently shows poor power efficiency to turn on the TV‘ he said, adding that if the product would be released to the public today, it would require customers to solve said power issues on their own. Evidently, this is not a viable strategy, so the company will keep working on improving and developing related technologies that are needed to turn this concept into a consumer-grade device.

The wireless Samsung TV can sit at a distance of up to 2m from its power source

Samsung didn’t reveal a lot about the underlying technology that goes into this future product, but Hang Jong-hee confirmed that the current proof-of-concept TV model can be powered while sitting at a distance of up to 2 meters from the power supply. This suggests that it may be using magnetic resonance technology or a variation of it.

Magnetic resonance wireless charging technology allows compatible devices to recharge without having to make contact with a charging pad/coil. In other words, they can be recharged from a distance. But there are shortcomings to this method, particularly in regards to energy efficiency. This is one of the reasons why magnetic resonance wireless charging is not yet as prevalent as magnetic induction wireless charging, the latter of which is used in our smartphones today.

There’s no telling when Samsung will be ready to showcase its first truly wireless TV to the public, but progress is being made and it’s refreshing to see that the company is confident enough in its development to at least confirm the product’s existence. We might not be too far away from a truly wireless future, and it’s quite exciting to think of all the possibilities that it can bring.

Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook has a stylus-enabled 4K AMOLED panel

Today Samsung took the veil off its first-ever Galaxy Chromebook. Mind you, it’s not the first Samsung Chromebook but it is the first device of its kind to bear the Galaxy badge. And for good reasons! It’s equipped with an AMOLED display – a first in the history of Chromebooks – and comes with a built-in stylus that slides out from the right edge.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook features a 2-in-1 form factor with a 360-degree hinge. It’s built from durable aluminum and has a thickness of just 9.9mm.

Similar to Samsung’s latest Galaxy Book lineup, the Galaxy Chromebook was built in collaboration with Intel as part of the Project Athena innovation program. This ensures that the device takes advantage of a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor, Intel Wi-Fi 6, and delivers good performance and battery life.

Galaxy Chromebook – A closer look at the specs

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook features a 13.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 3,840 by 2,160. The panel is surrounded by a thin 3.9mm frame which becomes considerably thicker at the bottom. Samsung confirmed that the screen will offer HDR400 through a software update set to launch at an unspecified date after the hardware’s release.

The Core i5 processor is paired with 16GB PLDDR3 memory and the device can be equipped with up to 1TB of SSD storage (no other storage options have been announced yet).

Other specs include a 1MP front camera, an 8MP shooter embedded in the base right above the keyboard, and an internal digital dual array microphone along with a mono mic. It also has two 2W stereo speakers and a built-in fingerprint scanner.

I/O consists of two USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a UFS/microSD card reader. The keyboard is backlit, and all of these components rely on a 49.2Wh battery. They are wrapped in a body measuring 302.6 x 203.2 x 9.9mm and weighing 1.04kg.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook will be available in Q1 in Fiesta Red or Mercury Gray for the starting price of $999.

2020 could be the year of recovery for Samsung’s chip business

Industry watchers cited by Reuters expect Samsung Electronics’ Q4 2019 operating profits to have declined by a whopping 40% to $5.56 billion due to weak memory chip sales. Some analysts suspect that the company could post its biggest annual drop in profit over the last decade, but the good news is that Samsung Electronics is expected to recover this year and have a strong first quarter.

Interestingly enough, Refinitiv SmartEstimate analysts suspect that Samsung’s annual profit will increase by nearly 40% throughout 2020. This positive outcome would be driven by increased sales of 5G smartphones and demand for server infrastructures from enterprise customers. And with the chip market expected to stabilize this year, industry watchers are faithful that Samsung will perform better in 2020.

Samsung tackled 2019’s chip market’s decline with grace

2019 was a tough year for the chip business as a whole. An oversupply coupled with weaker demand and the U.S.-China trade war has made it difficult for chipmakers to maintain a positive trajectory. Despite all of this, half of Samsung’s profit in the first three quarters of 2019 was generated by its chip business. This has allowed the company to increase the value of its shares by 44% by the end of the year, in spite of the hurdles it had to face.

2020 is expected to be different and ‘the chip market will rebound […] from a low base last year‘ according to S&P Global Ratings director, Park Jun-hong. He adds that the market is unlikely to boom as it did in 2017 when Samsung dethroned Intel as the world’s largest chipmaker, but it will begin to recover. Since Samsung is a key player in this segment, it is bound to benefit from the market stabilizing. Operating profits throughout the coming quarters could look very positive.

Then again, Samsung also expects overall sales of consumer electronics to possibly decline this year as the global economy could prove to be more difficult to tackle in 2020, partly because of rising political uncertainty. Nevertheless, it sounds like the worst is behind us and 2020 will be the year when Samsung will begin to recover some of the losses it recorded in 2019.

Check out Samsung’s SelfieType virtual keyboard in action ahead of CES

Samsung is going to unveil a new input method for smartphone users later today at CES 2020. It’s called SelfieType and it was created by Samsung’s C-Lab division as a new virtual keyboard powered by AI and image recognition technologies. It could become part of One UI – at least for some Galaxy models – in the future.

On the surface, SelfieType seems to achieve what older projector keyboards did, or tried to accomplish. It doesn’t project any images, but rather, it creates a virtual (invisible) full QWERTY keyboard on a hard surface such as a desk. It uses the smartphone’s or tablet’s front-facing cameras coupled with image recognition technologies to determine what the user is typing in real-time.

No additional hardware required

What’s very appealing about SelfieType is that it doesn’t require any additional hardware, unlike projector keyboards. It could very well become available on some of the ongoing Galaxy smartphones and tablets through a software update.

It would likely be limited to certain higher-end models that are powerful enough to handle AI-based image recognition on the fly in conjunction with their front-facing cameras. Nevertheless, the entry-level barriers would be nearly non-existent, and that’s definitely a plus for any emerging technologies.

Is this going to be any different than older projector keyboards?

Technically speaking, it is different, but as far as the market perception goes, it’s difficult to tell whether SelfieType will have the same fate as projector keyboards did.

There are reasons to remain skeptical about this technology considering the previous similar attempts to create a virtual keyboard. On the other hand, it’s very important to keep in mind that AI, smartphone cameras, and image recognition technologies have gone a long way over the past few years, so virtual keyboards could now be viable.

SelfieType might work as well as it does in Samsung’s teaser video below. If it does, then it could actually be a great solution for smartphone/tablet users who still find it cumbersome to type on a touchscreen. Especially since it wouldn’t require additional investment.

That’s not to say a smartphone or a tablet coupled with SelfieType will be the next laptop killer, or that this combo will make physical keyboards obsolete. But it will be a welcomed addition if it manages to improve the mobile typing experience even a little bit, especially if it would do so through software updates on existing hardware.

We’ll find out more about SelfieType once Samsung fully unveils it at CES later today, so stay tuned. Until then, what are your thoughts on the possibility that SelfieType could become a One UI feature in the near future? Join us in the comment section below.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy S20 will have a super smooth 120Hz display

The possibility that Samsung might bring 120Hz displays to its smartphones first emerged when the Exynos 990 processor was announced. The chip has support for high refresh rate displays and it’s going to power the Galaxy S20. There was also a secret menu in the One UI 2.0 beta for a 120Hz display mode.

None of Samsung’s existing smartphones have a 120Hz panel so enabling the mode didn’t accomplish anything. What it meant was that Samsung would likely give its next flagship phone a higher refresh rate display. We can now confirm that’s indeed the case for the Galaxy S20.

Galaxy S20 will be Samsung’s first 120Hz display phone

In case you’re wondering where the Galaxy S20 came from when everyone seemed to be talking about the Galaxy S11 until a few days ago, that’s because the Galaxy S11 is likely going to be launched as the Galaxy S20 instead.

There have only been a few rumors so far about the Galaxy S20 having a 120Hz display. We have now heard from highly reliable sources that Samsung’s upcoming flagship does indeed feature a 120Hz refresh rate display. A higher refresh rate allows the screen to refresh content more dynamically. That would mean the users experience much smoother animations and scrolling. Fast-paced games would also look much better on the display.

We’ve already had a glimpse of what the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz will look like on a Samsung phone. The Galaxy S20 will let users switch between 60Hz and 120Hz display modes, with the former better suited for those who’d like to get the most mileage out of their battery.

Samsung is actually quite familiar with high refresh rate displays. Some of the phones on the market that have high refresh rate displays feature panels sourced from Samsung. The company has finally made up its mind about using them for its own flagships. That’s a decision which is bound to please many of its fans.

The Galaxy S20 is going to be announced at the February 11 event that Samsung confirmed over the weekend. We’ll be in San Francisco to bring you all of the latest news from the next Galaxy Unpacked event.

Samsung intros 88 and 150-inch bezel-less microLED TV models

Samsung is bringing its latest TV lineups at CES 2020. Along with the bezel-less Q950TS 8K model, the company also unveiled a new microLED series which will launch in two additional sizes with a similar ultra-slim, zero-bezel Infinity design. Also, Samsung is showcasing the existing Lifestyle TV called ‘The Sero‘ at CES before expanding availability to more markets.

New microLED series introduces bezel-less 88 and 150-inch models

Samsung’s microLED TV series comprised 75, 88, 93, and 110-inch models, but the 2020 lineup introduces two new variants measuring 88 and 150-inch, respectively.

The two new microLED models get the same zero-bezel treatment as the QLED Q950TS 8K, so the fresh Infinity design language is not going to remain exclusive to the QLED lineup.

The bezel-less design promises a screen-to-body ratio of nearly 99 percent, with the only (barely) noticeable bezel residing at the bottom of the screen. These gorgeous displays can reach impressive peak brightness levels of 5,000 nits, and they, too, lean on deep learning AI to upscale content.

Samsung is preparing The Sero for the global market

Along with the new models showcased at CES 2020 comes a confirmation that Samsung’s The Sero TV is going to make its way into more markets soon.

Originally launched in South Korea last year, The Sero has now been confirmed to be planned for release in ‘several global markets in 2020.’ Exact pricing and availability details have not been confirmed, but this is true for every new TV model showcased by the company in Las Vegas.

The name ‘The Sero’ translates to ‘vertical’ in Korean, and the reason for this is obvious once you look at the product’s design. It can pivot to showcase horizontal or vertical content and Samsung claims that The Sero is the perfect solution for customers who want to connect their smartphones to their TVs.

Samsung’s new products will be showcased at CES 2020 and we expect more details on pricing and availability to be unveiled soon thereafter.

Unlocked Galaxy S10 and Note 10 get January security update in the US

Samsung is rolling out the January 2020 security update for unlocked Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 devices in the US. The Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+, Note 10, and Note 10+ have picked up a new update in the country that bundles the latest Android security patch and, well, that’s about it. The update comes with software version G97*U1UES2CSL1 for the Galaxy S10 series and N97*U1UES2BSLD for the Galaxy Note 10 duo.

While the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ have received the January 2020 security update in other countries, this is the first time the January patch has been released for the Galaxy S10 lineup. We’re assuming the Exynos-powered Galaxy S10 models will soon be getting the update in other countries, as Samsung has been getting better and better at quickly pushing out the latest security patches to its flagship phones.

As with all updates, you can download this one on your Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+, Note 10, or Note 10+ over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. Galaxy Buds+ to have better sound and battery life, no noise cancellation?

The upcoming Galaxy Buds+ may not have active noise cancellation, according to Twitter leakster Ice universe. The Buds+ will be the sequel to the excellent Galaxy Buds and are expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S11 next month, and there’s been no concrete information on what features it will bring to the table. It has been rumored and speculated that the Buds+ could feature active noise cancellation, but it seems that will not be the case.

According to Ice universe, Samsung is focusing on better battery life and faster charging with the Galaxy Buds+ and will also improve its sound quality, all of which will no doubt be welcome improvements. The charging case will also be updated with the ability to indicate the charging status of the individual buds, as renders of the case had revealed last week. The lack of active noise cancellation may disappoint some, but it should mean that the Buds+ will not be much costlier than the regular Galaxy Buds.

What do you think? Would you prefer to have active noise cancellation on the Galaxy Buds+, or would better sound, battery life, and faster charging be enough for you to make a purchase?

New Samsung Galaxy S9 Android 10 beta update released

It looks like the stable Android 10 release for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ is still some ways off, as Samsung has released a new Android 10 beta update for the two phones. Software version G96*FXXU7ZTA2 is now rolling out to the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in India. It should also be available in other markets where the beta program was launched.

The new update brings a handful of bug fixes and the January 2020 security patch (which was also included in the previous beta update). A bug that seemingly locked people out of the Secure Folder on their device has been fixed, along with unwanted noise when “performing sound quality optimization” with both 3.5mm and USB-C headphones. The update also improves camera performance and motion recognition when navigation gestures are active; it also brings an updated version of Digital Wellbeing.

If you are using the Android 10 beta on your Galaxy S9 or S9+, you should be able to download the latest update over the air right away. Just open the phone’s Settings app, select Software update, and tap Download and install. Don’t forget to backup all important data before performing the update, as there’s no telling when something might break and require you to reset your phone to get it working again.

Samsung NEON will bring lifelike ‘artificial humans’ to your digital screens

It seems Samsung has found a way to bring lifelike ‘artificial humans’ to the masses. The company has been teasing a new product called NEON in recent weeks, and a leaked video showcasing what NEON can do suggests that we could soon be talking to a digital human who looks, talks, and even thinks like a real person.

NEON seems to use motion capture technology to capture an actor’s likeness and voice and then lets AI use that data to let the digital avatars “autonomously create new expressions, new movements, new dialog (even in Hindi), completely different from the original captured data”, according to Pranav Mistry, who is leading the project. Digital humans are not new – they have been seen in movies and video games for decades, but Samsung is suggesting that NEON can take things a step further and enable these digital humans to have unscripted interactions.

Unfortunately, it remains to be seen exactly how lifelike the characters created with NEON will be (and whether we will one day see them making their way into Bixby). The leaked video makes it all look extremely impressive, though, and we can’t wait to see what Samsung has in store. The company will be showcasing NEON at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, which is taking place from January 7 to January 9.
