Samsung unveils DRVLINE self-driving car platform

Samsung has been focusing on avenues of potential future growth and it believes that self-driving cars hold great promise. The company has been working in this space but not with ambitions of making its own self-driving car.

It’s going to make the hardware and software that powers the technological systems required to make a car drive itself. The company today unveiled its DRVLINE autonomous driving platform that unifies its self-driving car technology efforts into a single platform.

Samsung DRVLINE platform

DRVLINE from Samsung is a hardware and software platform that will be offered to car manufacturers. They will be able to use this platform to create customized advanced autonomous cars.

Many existing self-driving tech platforms are developed as all-or-nothing black-box packages. What that means is that the end user has to adopt the particular technology in its entirety. DRVLINE is different because it allows vendors to collaborate and customize individual components. The vendors can thus build the vehicle’s self-driving car system to their specifications.

This will also help future-proof DRVLINE in this fast-changing industry as car manufacturers can market the most advanced existing self-driving car technology while adding new innovations as they work toward achieving full autonomy.

Samsung and Harman have also created a new ADAS forward-facing camera system which features lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. It will start shipping this DRVLINE system to car manufacturers later this year.

Harman’s Digital Cockpit platform brings Bixby to cars

Harman International became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung less than a year ago. The company didn’t just own a variety of premium audio brands. It has made significant technological advancements in connected technologies for the automotive industry.

Samsung and Harman now have a joint mission to become the leader in the in-car connectivity market. To that end, Harman today unveiled a reinvented digital cockpit platform for all car types that also brings Bixby to the car.

Harman’s Digital Cockpit platform

Harman’s new Digital Cockpit platform provides a suite of scalable and flexible premium experiences that will suit the lifestyles of modern users without compromising on safety. The platform will be offered to car manufacturers in standard and advanced system configurations.

It can seamlessly integrate the instrument cluster with the center console through voice, haptic feedback, physical knobs and steering wheel controls in a single, center screen which will display all of the important information and features.

The platform will make it possible for drivers to safely interact with their in-car technology without having to divert focus from the road. This will be made possible through a projection mode for services and apps via a user’s smartphone.

The premium configuration of the Digital Cockpit can combine the driver’s entire connected lifestyle across the Internet of Things. The in-car user experience will be personalized through a multi-display layout which leverages Harman’s Ignite Platform. It will bring services like Bixby, portable profiles, augmented reality and more.

Bixby in the car will enable occupants to complete tasks using voice commands, touch, gesture and context-based triggers.

It remains to be seen if and when car manufacturers start to adopt this new platform. It sounds promising on paper but it won’t see the light of day until a car manufacturer is willing to put it inside one of its cars.

Bixby coming to Samsung Smart TVs this year

Samsung introduced Bixby with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ last year and it was only a matter of time before the company expanded its AI-powered virtual assistant to other devices. Smart TVs seem to be a natural habitat for assistants like Bixby and with competitors like Google Home and Alexa already having an established presence in this space, Samsung is finally bringing Bixby into the fold as well. The company has confirmed today that all Samsung Smart TVs sold in the US this year will feature Bixby.

Bixby on Samsung Smart TVs

Bixby will create a connected fabric between devices and provide users with a one-step process for TV setup and access to apps, photos, content, and more. Since the connected devices will now operate on one connected cloud platform, the TV will interact with the Family Hub refrigerator seamlessly to let users plan their TV viewing, meals and more regardless of the screen being used.

It remains to be seen when Bixby will be rolled out for Samsung Smart TVs in markets other than the United States. Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction and it will only be a matter of time before Bixby makes it to Samsung Smart TVs in other markets.

There have been a lot of rumors recently about what Samsung will talk about during its CES 2018 press conference. Some have even suggested that it might unveil the Galaxy S9 at this event though it seems highly unlikely.

Samsung might unveil its new 2-in-1 Chromebook later today. It has been a year since it launched new Chromebooks so it would make sense for the company to launch the rumored product in Los Angeles today.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be in Las Vegas to follow the proceedings. Samsung is going to stream its CES 2018 press conference live. You’ll be able to check it out on the company’s official newsroom website, its Facebook page, and its YouTube channel.

Galaxy Note 8 finally gets December patch, Secure Wi-Fi and Live Focus improvements in the UK

The unbranded Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F) hasn’t received any new firmware updates in the United Kingdom since September 2017. This means that users have missed out on features like Secure Wi-Fi that were added over the past month. Even the security patch wasn’t updated until today.

Samsung is now rolling out a new firmware update for the unbranded Galaxy Note 8 in the United Kingdom. The update includes the December 2017 security patch, Secure Wi-Fi and improvements for the Live Focus feature.

Galaxy Note 8 December security patch

The latest update for the Galaxy Note 8 in the UK brings the Secure Wi-Fi feature. It’s a VPN service from Samsung that’s not entirely new given that we’ve seen it on some budget Galaxy J handsets in the past. Secure Wi-Fi encrypts all outgoing internet traffic on the device when enabled and also disables apps and websites from tracking the user.

The firmware update also brings improvements for the Galaxy Note 8’s Live Focus feature and we’ve already described them in detail previously. The changes are minor but they go a long way in improving the feature’s performance.

Last but not the least, the December 2017 security patch is included in this firmware update for the Galaxy Note 8.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version N950FXXU2BQKG for the unbranded Galaxy Note 8 in the United Kingdom. We hear that the update is only available over SmartSwitch right now and isn’t rolling out over-the-air just yet. We do have it available for download in our firmware section. It weighs in at a hefty 3.7GB.

Samsung planning to launch the Galaxy On7 Prime in India next week

In 2015, Samsung launched their Galaxy On series smartphones in India to compete with Chinese brands in online sales. Since then Samsung has been gradually adding new models to their Galaxy On line-up. Samsung currently sells Galaxy On5 Pro, Galaxy On7 Pro, and Galaxy On Max in India.

As per a report in IANS, Samsung is now planning to launch the Galaxy On7 Prime in India as an Amazon-exclusive in the second week of January. The device will come in two configurations: 3GB RAM/32GB internal storage and 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage. The device will be priced around INR. 15,000 (~$236).

Available in the UAE already

Interestingly, the Galaxy On7 Prime is already available for sale on Souq, an Amazon-owned e-commerce platform in Middle East. The device is also listed on Samsung UAE website with a link to Souq for purchase. Except for the front camera, the specs mentioned in the IANS report match with the Galaxy On7 Prime listing on Samsung UAE website.  The IANS report mentions a 13-megapixel front camera while the official listing on Samsung UAE website lists an 8-megapixel front camera.

As per the listing on Samsung UAE’s website, Galaxy On7 Prime comes with a 5.5-inch Full-HD display, 1.6Ghz octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 32 GB inbuilt memory, fingerprint reader, and a 3300mAh battery. For photography needs, the Galaxy On7 Prime comes with a 13-megapixel camera on the back and an 8-megapixel camera on the front. Both the cameras tout F1.9 aperture for brighter images in low light scenes.

Galaxy On7 Prime sports a unibody metal design and is available in Black and Gold color options. The 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant is priced at 729 AED (~$200) on Souq.com. There is no listing for the 4GB RAM variant currently.

Brands like Mi made inroads into the Indian smartphone market through exclusive partnerships with major online retailers. It helped them to target the Indian market without building any of the traditional distribution channels. Samsung Galaxy On series is meant to compete with these brands in the online space through exclusive partnerships. The Galaxy On series smartphones are often rebranded variants of the existing models.

[Poll] Would you pay more for Samsung’s experimental/research devices?

Samsung is gigantic, to say the least, and it also happens to be one of the most innovative corporations. For the last few years, though, Samsung has playing it safe when it comes to launching game-changing products before the market is ready for them. It’s great for the average consumer that the company is focusing on making things work right instead of being the first out the gate with a new product, but it’s not so good for the die-hard fans.

Early access to Samsung’s “innovative” hardware: Yay or nay?

Here at SamMobile, we’ve been wondering: Would you pay more to be able to get your hands on experimental hardware from Samsung? Take the first real foldable device, for example, which Samsung has been working on for a few years and has managed to keep a secret for a long time. We think an online-only “innovators” line (or something like that) from the company would be nice to see, if only for its most ardent fans who would help test the waters and act as beta testers for the final product.

How awesome would it be to be among the first few with brand new tech in your hands, even if that technology may never go mainstream and may cost too high? We remember when we had the chance to test the Galaxy Round all those years ago; that felt great, and we all know how the Galaxy Note Edge acted as the precursor to the curved Edge variants of the Galaxy S line that ultimately replaced flat-screen variants of the company’s flagships.

Well, do let us know what you think by casting a vote in the poll and by getting a discussion going in the comments!
