Canada finally gets the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Platinum Gold

Samsung does offer multiple color options for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge but not all of them are immediately available in markets where these handsets are being sold. The company released its new flagship devices in Canada on April 10th and only the Black Sapphire and White Pearl color options were available at launch. Now though customers in Canada can purchase the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Platinum Gold as well.

A few weeks back Samsung Canada did confirm that the Platinum Gold color option would soon be offered to customers in the country through major carriers but didn’t confirm their names. Starting today folks in Canada can pick up the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in Platinum Gold from Rogers, Telus, Fido, Sasktel and Videotron. Everything else such as the specifications and the price remains the same, it’s merely another coat of paint on the same devices we’ve all come to know and love.

Samsung will pump $10 billion in its semiconductor business this year

Samsung’s semiconductor business has been showing stellar performance which is why it’s not surprising to see that the company is going to invest more into it. Unprecedented demand has contributed to the growth of the semiconductor business so much so that it’s the best performing division at Samsung, and the company now plans to pump in as much as $10 billion into it in 2015.

Senior vice president of Samsung’s semiconductor division Jeeho Baek said during a conference call with analysts that the company invested around $9.36 billion in this division last year and that it plans to “maintain similar volume this year.” In 2015 Samsung will be increasing its production capacity for memory chips and will add another production line at its facility in Hwaseong to produce DRAMs, it expects to have the new production line up and running by the end of this year. Samsung is also going to start construction on a new plant in Pyeongtaek next month and it expects production to begin at this facility by 2017.

Recent reports have suggested that Samsung’s semiconductor business might see further growth once Qualcomm taps it to produce the Snapdragon 820 on the 14-nm process, even Apple and NVIDIA are reportedly considering using Samsung’s 14-nm and 20-nm processes for their next-gen chips.

CM Locker updated with support for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge’s fingerprint sensor

CM Locker is a very popular lockscreen app for Android devices that brings quite a lot of features while focusing on privacy protection, it’s pattern and password unlock features can be used to control access to the device. A new update has been released for this app which makes CM Locker the first app of its kind to support the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge’s fingerprint sensor. People who like this app and want to use it on their new Samsung flagship can now continue to use the fingerprint sensor to control access to their device.

One of the main uses of the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge is to control device access, however if users install a lockscreen app that doesn’t support it the feature will be of no use to them. This is why CM Locker has been updated to ensure that its users can continue to take advantage of the fingerprint sensor on Samsung’s new handsets. The existing password and pattern unlock features of the app will remain available to users as well. CM Locker’s other features include Intruder Selfie which automatically snaps a picture using the front camera when someone enters a wrong password, music control optimized for one-hand operation, camera shortcut and more.

CM Locker is a free app available to download right away from the Google Play Store.

As Indian smartphone market registers increase, Samsung holds on to the lead

Latest data from Counterpoint Research reveals that the Indian smartphone market has registered an year-over-year increase of 21% but is down 8% quarter-over-quarter. Smartphones accounted for 37% of all handset shipments in the country in Q1 2015 with Samsung holding on to its lead despite mounting competition from local vendors.

It was first reported a couple of months back that Samsung had lost its lead in India to local OEM Micromax but Samsung was quick to refute that report with its own numbers. Counterpoint’s data shows that Samsung holds 27.8% of the Indian smartphone market with Micromax coming in second place with 15.3% market share. Intex, Lava and Lenovo came third, fourth and fifth accounting for 9.4%, 5.4% and 5.2% of the country’s smartphone market. Xiaomi’s shipments saw a decline during the quarter but it remained one of the best performing 4G smartphone brands in India owing to strong sales of the Mi Note 4G and Redmi 2 4G. Counterpoint’s report concludes that India was the third largest smartphone market in the world during Q1 2015.

Revised user manual for Galaxy Alpha now available online

It hasn’t been very long since Samsung started seeding the OTA for Android Lollipop on the Galaxy Alpha. Naturally, the roll out is done in phases so there’s still a section of the users of the Galaxy Alpha who haven’t received the update notification. Nonetheless, Samsung today gave another ominous sign that it was indeed coming — by making available an updated users manual for the Galaxy Alpha.

The users manual can be downloaded in Dutch, German and English via Samsung servers. While most users don’t really need (or refer to) the users manual, it seems like a nice thing to read just to get acquainted for what’s going to come!

Samsung Pay pegged for September launch in South Korea and the US

Samsung Pay is certainly something worth watching out for. The service which was announced alongside the premier Samsung products — the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge — earlier this year seems to be close to getting ripe for a couple international markets.

From what we’re hearing, Samsung Pay will be heading for the South Korean and US markets later this year. Of course, we’ve been provided no timeline as yet; but if our sources are correct about this, we are looking at a September release timeframe… which means there’s just about four months to go before that.

What makes Samsung Pay attractive is the fact that it’ll be compatible with a lot of older terminals, something which isn’t really possible on the prime competitor that it faces — Apple Pay.

Albeit unofficially, Samsung addresses RAM management issues on the Galaxy S6

If you’ve been following SamMobile lately, you would have read about the poor RAM management that has been affecting the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. It certainly isn’t something you expect on a flagship phone of 2015, let alone on any phone that costs as much as the S6/S6 edge. However, based on what we’ve just learnt, it appears as though Samsung has not only acknowledged, but also addressed the poor RAM management.

“I’ve personally been irritated by the horrendous RAM management on my Galaxy S6 edge – apps like WhatsApp and Facebook, which usually stay in memory and show up instantly on devices with 2GB+ RAM, often take time to load as the phone keeps killing their processes,” is what Abhijeet had to say about the issue. Thankfully, Samsung is taking care of these issues one at a time via means of micro-updates.

Responding to a user’s query around the same issue, Samsung UK said that the company would be rolling out updates that would correct the issue.

As usual, we’ll be the first ones to inform you about the updates and the efficacy of the same. Meanwhile, let us know what you think about the issue in all!

Android 5.1.1 OTA being rolled out on T-Mobile for the S6 edge!

Unassuming Galaxy S6 edge users are in for a surprise, as T-Mobile appears to be rolling out a freshly cooked OTA based on Android version 5.1.1 Lollipop for the device. The catch, however, it is so far reported only on the T-Mobile network.

XDA forums user Sunderwear mentioned about the OTA a couple of hours back (at the time of writing this story). Urged by other users of the device, the poster also uploaded a video of his Galaxy S6 edge running the latest firmware. The video can be found at the end of this article.

As noted from the narration, the update also locks the bootloader on the device.

So, how many of you have already received the update? What do you think of it?

Exclusive: Android 5.1 will bring Guest Mode to the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Guest Mode is one of the features that separate Android from the competition, allowing a single device to be used by multiple users (Windows Phone has a Kids mode, but doesn’t allow making separate user profiles.) Support for the feature was initially added on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but it was only available on tablets back then. With Android 5.0, Google brought Guest Mode to smartphones as well, but as it turns out, Samsung chose not to include the feature on any of the devices that it has updated to Lollipop.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are missing the feature as well, but we can confirm that it will be making an appearance with the Android 5.1 update for the two devices, and possibly other Samsung phones as well. We were able to play with an extremely early (and unstable) Android 5.1 build for the Galaxy S6 edge, and found Guest Mode works in the same way as it does on stock Android. Each user will have his/her own personal space, with the option to install their own apps, personalize their homescreen, and even secure their setup with their fingerprint.

Guest Mode is a pretty useful feature, even if it’s not one that most will ever need to use, so it’s great to see Samsung is bringing it to its smartphones (though the fact that it wasn’t there in the first place is a bit disappointing, especially since not every device might get the Android 5.1 update.) At this time there’s no telling when the Korean giant plans to roll out Android 5.1 for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but as always, we will be doing our best to get you more details on the matter.

Would you use Guest Mode on your phone, or do you think it’s a feature that isn’t too important? Let us know in the comments!

Despite Samsung’s success, bias keeps company down

There’s a bias in the media. Although Samsung has had some measurable time at the top of global marketshare, tech analysts and media (pro-Apple, mind you) called for Samsung’s fall with Apple’s large iPhone 6 Plus last Fall. If you’re a tech enthusiast, you’ve heard the same claim that Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus would put a major dent into Samsung’s smartphone sales. And when Apple’s sales increased after the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus announcement, some predicted the end of what had been a huge bragging right for Samsung – global marketshare.

And the bias continues despite Samsung’s success with its newest smartphones. We now have the latest figures regarding Samsung’s Q1 2015 sales. The company shipped 83 million smartphones (shipped doesn’t mean sold, we’re constantly told), and, while this is 6 million smartphones fewer than sales figures from Q1 2014, it’s enough to put Samsung back on top in global marketshare. Additionally, the Korean manufacturer saw a 39% reduction in its net income from a year ago, a 30% reduction in operating profit, and a 57% drop in the company’s mobile unit operating profit from Q4 2014. And so, we’re given the same message, time and time again, that Samsung’s numbers leave a lot to be desired. If it’s not “Samsung isn’t selling smartphones, the Galaxy S5 was pathetic” (which is also false), we’re being told that the company doesn’t have its sales together and is losing its “edge.”

What can Samsung do to escape this bias? Unfortunately, nothing. The media may not want to hear this message, but let me take some time to explain this to you, our Samsung faithful.

Samsung’s chances for mass sales are like the chances a child has to get more than 2 slices of pizza when he has to share the pizza with 4 other people.

First, Samsung is an Android manufacturer and Apple is the face of iOS. Samsung has to compete with other companies in the Android space, such as LG, HTC, Sony, Huawei, Lenovo, Motorola, Xiaomi, ZTE, and others. Samsung’s chances for mass sales are like the chances a child has to get more than 2 slices of pizza when he has to share the pizza with 4 other people. You can take the slice of pizza, expand it, and then consider that with each percentage of sales, companies are slicing and dicing up the whole pizza (all Android sales) among themselves.

The eight Android manufacturers above are not the only ones, but they are the major ones – and they all must compete in the same enclosed Android space. In other words, Samsung could never achieve 101% of Android sales (and, with so many manufacturers in the space, it is impossible to get 95% of all sales). This past Q1 2015, Samsung shipped 83.2 million smartphones out of a total of 345 million smartphones (thus, having 24.1% of all shipped smartphones in Q1). Lenovo-Motorola had 5.4% of shipped smartphones (18.8 million), Huawei had 5% (17.3 million), and the “others” (throw in LG, HTC, Sony, Xiaomi, etc.) had 47.7% of all shipped smartphones in the quarter (164.5 million).

When you look at the stats, Samsung is carrying nearly half the global marketshare of all the other Android vendors combined (keep in mind that we’ve mentioned seven other Android manufacturers in this article, and there are other lesser-known brands). Samsung is shouldering its own in the Android space (with little competition, I may add, unless you factor in the “others,” who don’t even get a specific name mention), and the stats favor Samsung.

It’s interesting that the same tech analysts and media (some Apple and even Android tech sites) that tend to down Samsung aren’t applauding the “others” in the list. After all, the “others” category shipped more smartphones than Motorola, Samsung, and Apple last quarter. Why aren’t tech analysts and media applauding the “others” over Apple, for example?

There is no “slicing up the pizza,” so to speak, no divvying up the profits with anyone else but Apple.

In contrast, Apple has no competing manufacturers with iOS. No one else but Apple makes iPhones and iPads (and now iOS smartwatches), and no other devices in the mobile space run iOS but Apple devices. And, as a result, Apple doesn’t have to share its success with anyone. There is no “slicing up the pizza,” so to speak, no divvying up the profits with anyone else but Apple. And yet, if you take a look at the company’s smartphone sales and marketshare, Apple has lost quite a bit of the steam it picked up at the end of 2014. And yet, Apple gets applauded for its sales (even though the company is still down as compared to its sales a year ago in Q1 2014), while Samsung’s recovery gets sidelined in the media space because of its losses in profit. A double standard is at play here.

Me thinks tech analysts and media doth criticize way too much, to recycle a line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

In the end, comparing Samsung and Apple’s profits are, literally, like comparing oranges to apples: the success of both companies has a context, a situation, that requires consideration. Anyone who studies sales and global marketshare throughout the year knows that the secret to success is not necessarily how you start, but how you end. 83.2 million smartphones shipped in Q1 is a stellar achievement for any tech company. Any. Tech. Company. And Motorola, LG, HTC, Sony, Huawei, Xiaomi, and other Android manufacturers could only dream of having Samsung’s success.

So, what’s the problem with tech analysts and pro-Apple media? They’re just scared ‘cause Samsung’s made a comeback. Don’t worry, though; if you hang around in the tech world long enough, you’ll see that criticizing Samsung is what the critics do around the office when they run out of productive itinerary. Unfortunately for the tech analysts and media, Samsung’s got the right numbers to put it back at the top.

Despite the numbers they want you to see, there’s only one set that matters.

LTE variant of Samsung Galaxy S5 starts receiving Android Lollipop update in India

After releasing Android Lollipop update for the HSPA variant of the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H) in India, Samsung has now released it for the 4G LTE variant as well. The Galaxy S5 (SM-G900I) has now reportedly started receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop update in India, almost three months after the same variant received it in Taiwan. You might not receive the update instantaneously as such major updates are usually rolled out in phases. However, you can always check for the update by visiting Settings ➜ About Device ➜ Software Update section in your device.

Android Lollipop update brings in Material Design elements, new multitasking menu, notification controls, Tap & Go for faster device setup, performance improvements, security enhancements, and many more features. Last year, Samsung released the 3G variant of the device in India, and after consumers’ outrage, the company decided to bring its 4G LTE variant in the country.

Exclusive: Samsung Project Zen and Project Noble details

It has been revealed through an IMEI database that Samsung has developed two new handsets carrying model numbers SM-G928S and SM-N920F. It appears that the SM-G928S is a new variant of the Galaxy S6 as the model number makes it clear that’s a derivative of an existing model rather than a new model altogether, model numbers reveal that the new variant will at least make its way to South Korea, the US and certain markets in Europe. On the other hand the SM-N920F is likely the Galaxy Note 5, since the Galaxy Note 4 carried model number SM-N910x. Our sources have informed us that internally the new Galaxy S6 variant is being referred to as Project Zen, while the next-generation Galaxy Note handset is known as Project Noble.

We have also received a list of model numbers for Project Noble and Project Zen:

  • Noble – SM-N920F EUR XX
  • Noble - SM-N920S KOR SKC
  • Noble – SM-N920K KOR KTC
  • Noble – SM-N920A NA ATT
  • Noble - SM-N920V NA VZW
  • Zen – SM-G928A NA ATT
  • Zen – SM-G928S KOR SKC
  • Zen - SM-G928F EUR XX
  • Zen - SM-G928V NA VZW

It’s unclear at this point when Samsung intends on launching the SM-G928S and as far as the Galaxy Note 5 is concerned we already know not to expect it before September at the very least.

Samsung dethrones Apple to become largest smartphone vendor during Q1 2015

According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, Samsung has dethroned Apple to regain the title of largest smartphone vendor in the world. During Q1 2015, Samsung captured 24.1 percent of the global smartphone market, overtaking Apple, which claimed 17.7 percent market share during the same period.

Global Smartphone Vendor Market Share Samsung Q1 2015

The South Korean smartphone giant shipped 83.2 million smartphone units worldwide in the first quarter of 2015, while Apple could manage to ship 61.2 million units. Samsung managed to ship around 10 percent more when compared to the last quarter, but lower than the same period last year, when Samsung managed to ship around 89 million smartphones.

Global Smartphone Vendor Shipment Numbers Q1 2015

Neil Mawston, Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, said, “Samsung continued to face challenges in Asia and elsewhere, but its global performance has stabilized sufficiently well this quarter to overtake Apple and recapture first position as the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume.

The release of two new high-end smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge must have helped this cause. However, it would be interesting to see how the Samsung plans to improve in the low-end and mid-range smartphone segment where most of the smartphone growth lies in the near future. During its earnings call, Samsung stated that it would streamline its lineup to tap into the growth of low to mid-range smartphone segment.

Samsung wants to bring smartwatches and virtual-reality headsets to the enterprise

Currently, Samsung only makes consumer-centric smartwatches and virtual-reality headsets, but it is exploring bigger opportunities for the business. The company wants to make work fun and productive using wearable devices like smartwatches and virtual-reality headsets.

At a Samsung event in New York, Eric McCarty, vice president of mobile marketing, stated that business are interested in smartwatches for alerts and immediate access to critical information, while virtual-reality headsets like the Gear VR are drawing attention for presenting multimedia content in a unique and immersive way. However, there are challenges with both the types of devices, information security and BYOD integration for smartwatches, and content creation for virtual-reality headsets.

Samsung proposed some business use cases for both these device categories during the event. The company stated that smartwatches can be used by day traders, field service workers, and workers in restaurants to access immediate information and stay updated regarding their jobs. Day traders can get alerts for stock prices or make trades on a timely basis, while filed service workers can stay updated with job alerts while being on the road. Samsung sells smartwatches like the Gear S with 3G connectivity, so there’s no need for these devices to be extensions of users’ smartphones. Besides accessing information, smartwatches and other wearable devices can also double up as access cards or as pointing devices during presentations.

Samsung stated that there’s a huge amount of interest about virtual-reality headsets from automotive and real-estate industries. These devices can be used to display training videos, virtual tours of homes and other types of real estate. However, devices like the Gear VR can only be as good as the content created and deployed for them. Remember when Lamborghini teamed up with Samsung to provide virtual driving experience of Huracan supercar through Gear VR? Device makers can even create highly-customised, high-priced devices for enterprises that will be sold in small volumes.

Bob O’Donell, principal analyst at Technalysis Research, said that it could take years of experimentation to figure out how these devices can fit in the enterprise. “You have to have a pretty robust and rugged device. Consumer-grade stuff isn’t really going to cut it“, he said.

Samsung announces operating profit of $5.63 billion for Q1 2015, smartphone sales increase

Samsung has announced its earnings for Q1 2015 today, which lines up closely with the company’s guidance that was released earlier this month. In the first quarter of 2015, Samsung reported an overall revenue of 44 billion (KRW 47.12 trillion) with an operating profit of $5.63 billion (KRW 5.98 trillion). However, this is a drop in revenue but a slight increase in operating profit over the previous quarter. Compared to the same quarter last year when Samsung reported an operating profit of $7.8 billion, there is a drop in operating profit.

Coming to the important part, the company noted that the sales of its smartphones have increased, but the tablet and feature phone sales have taken a hit. During the quarter, the company shipped 99 million handsets, and over 80 percent of these device were smartphones. A majority of these devices were shipped to Southeast Asia and Middle East. Revenues from Samsung’s mobile devices have decreased to $24.1 billion (KRW 25.89 trillion) with an operating profit of $2.5 billion (KRW 2.74 trillion). Apparently, the increase in smartphone sales is largely due to consumer interest in its Galaxy A series of devices. Samsung is planning to tap the growing low-end and middle-range smartphone market with a streamlined lineup.

While the company is confident that the sales of the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge will outperform the sales of the Galaxy S5, it said that it’s too early to predict the sales volumes of its latest flagship smartphones. The company continued to blame seasonality and weakening global exchange for the ongoing decline of its business. SangHyo Kim, vice president of investor relations, admitted the company’s mobile business continued to decline but believes that it can regain growth momentum by focussing on new technologies such as curved and flexible displays, Samsung Pay, and wireless charging.

JinYoung Park, vice president of Samsung’s mobile communications business, said, “Market demand for the smartphone is expected to continue to increase, compared to the last year, due to global expansions of LTE services and growth in emerging markets. However, tablet market growth is expected to slow down. In 2015, we will continue to do our best to increase our smartphone business with our competitive product line-up. We plane to solidify our leadership in the premium handset market with differentiated features in our products.

While the company’s mobile devices division continues doesn’t show much improvement, its semiconductor and display panel business continues to shine. The divisions year-on-year profit is up by 81 percent to $3.1 billion (KRW 3.39 trillion), and the display panel business contributed $0.48 billion (KRW 0.52 trillion) to it, which is a turnaround when compared to $0.074 billion (KRW 0.08 trillion) posted last year. The company’s memory business showed 2 percent increase in the revenue, thanks to its DDR4 and low-power DDR4 memory chips, while the consumer electronics group posted a loss of $0.13 billion (KRW 0.14 trillion).

Buy the Galaxy S6 unlocked in the US for $629.99 through eBay

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone is available through all major carriers in the United States and even through some regional carriers. The downside to this carrier support is that Samsung can’t sell the unlocked Galaxy S6 directly in North America but there is a way to go around this limitation. Today’s eBay deal lets anyone in North America buy an unlocked Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) for $629.99.

Folks in the States who are interested in picking one up for full price should rest assured as this particular model does have support for majority of the LTE bands in the country, including band 2 and 12 for T-Mobile. It’s fully compatible with AT&T’s 3G network but users will be limited to HSPA+ on T-Mobile if they happen to be in an area where 1900MHz re-farmed spectrum is used. Nothing else is different about this device aside from the fact that it can be used on any supported carrier in the country and indeed across the globe, it has the same octa-core Exynos processor with 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 5.1-inch Quad HD display and 16-megapixel rear camera. For $629.99 customers get free shipping in the United States and tax is only applicable on purchases made from Florida.

Samsung rolls out Lollipop for the Galaxy Alpha in France

Just yesterday we reported that Samsung had started rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy Alpha in South Korea. Most major carriers in the country rolled out said update to Galaxy Alpha owners on their networks yesterday. We also said that this means Samsung would soon be rolling out Lollipop for this device in other markets across the globe, and it hasn’t taken too long for the company to get the ball rolling on this.

Today Samsung has released Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Galaxy Alpha in France. The roll out started this morning, as confirmed by Samsung France’s official Twitter account. It shouldn’t take too long for this update to go live for all Galaxy Alpha owners in the country. The update brings loads of new features for the device aside from an overhauled user interface, performance improvements and overall system enhancements. It comes in at just under 1GB and Galaxy Alpha owners will be wise to connect to a Wi-Fi network before they start downloading it.

Exclusive: Samsung teaming up with artists, fashion brands for its round smartwatch

Samsung’s next-generation Gear smartwatch is going to have a circular display, that much the company itself has confirmed. We have exclusively revealed many details about this watch - codenamed Orbis. Orbis obviously won’t be the moniker that this smartwatch will come to market with, as we have already reported it will be called the Gear A. It will be available in two variants, one with 3G and calling support and the other with just Bluetooth support (though both variants should have Wi-Fi connectivity.)

The Gear A will also have a rotating bezel ring which could presumably be used for scrolling through lists, zooming in and out, selecting time when setting an alarm and much more. Samsung has said that it’s next smartwatch will be as close to perfect as possible, and now there’s yet another reason to believe that Samsung is really serious about its first round smartwatch. The company is going to team up with various artists and fashion brands to create custom watch bands for this Orbis, according to our sources.

Miami based pop-up artist Romero Britto is believed to be involved as well. He has previously worked with Samsung to create custom cases for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. Samsung may also work with the likes of Z Zegna, Swarovski, Tech21, Anymode and Incipio to create custom watch bands for the Orbis. The company has worked with some of these brands in the past; for example Swarovski has created accessories for many Samsung devices. Some have only made cases in the past so it’s unclear at this point in time precisely what they’ll create for the Orbis.

Samsung foregoes its corporate branding in favor of Galaxy in Japan

We reported last month that Samsung’s latest flagship devices were being sold without its corporate branding in Japan, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge were instead accompanied by carrier branding. Samsung’s logo was not to be seen even on the promotional material for these new handsets and it appears this is part of a broader push by the company to use the “Galaxy” branding in Japan instead.

The latest design for the company’s pop-up stores in Japan proudly displays the new Galaxy logo but Samsung’s corporate branding is no where to be found, even the colors have been changed. Samsung’s logo has even been removed from the Galaxy S6 edge Flip Wallet being sold in the country and the packaging has also been redesigned. For customer support it directs customers to a “Galaxy Customer Center,” Samsung doesn’t even get mentioned once. In all other markets where its latest handsets are being sold the Samsung moniker is embossed on the box but in Japan the Galaxy S6 edge’s box doesn’t even have that.

Samsung Japan’s YouTube page has also been rebranded to “Galaxy Mobile Japan,” its Facebook and Twitter accounts get the same treatment and this just goes to show how serious the company is in its rebranding efforts in a bid to steal market share from Apple, which dominates the Japanese smartphone market.

The Galaxy S4 Google Play edition will get Android 5.1

Like Nexus devices, Google Play edition (GPe) smartphones have the benefit of receiving major software updates faster than their standard OEM variants. The Galaxy S4, the only Samsung phone to have launched as a Google Play edition device, was among the first to receive the initial Android 5.0 update, but has been sidelined as far as the minor updates to Lollipop are concerned.

All GPe devices were updated to Android 5.1 earlier this month, and the Galaxy S4 GPe was ignored once again. Well, if you were thinking that this was a sign that the device won’t get any further updates, then we have some good news for you – according to our sources, the Android 5.1 builds for the Galaxy S4 GPe are ready and could start rolling out at any time.

We don’t have a concrete time frame, but we can confirm that Google and Samsung haven’t forgotten about the Galaxy S4 and will be bringing it up to the latest version of Android at some point. We will be sure to let you know once the update starts rolling out; don’t forget to check out a preview of Android 5.0 running on the device in the video below.

Galaxy J5 dual-SIM and Galaxy J7 receive Bluetooth certification

We reported a few weeks back that Samsung is going to expand the Galaxy J series with two new handsets, the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7. Unlike the Galaxy J1 these handsets will have proper mid-range specifications which would make them a compelling choice for anyone out in the market for a budget smartphone. It has now come to our attention that these two as yet unannounced handsets have received Bluetooth certification.

The Galaxy J5 (SM-J500F) will come with a 5.0-inch HD TFT LCD display, a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor from Qualcomm with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The device’s Bluetooth certification listing shows that a dual-SIM version will be offered as well. The Galaxy J7 (SM-J700F) has also received its Bluetooth certification. This device will have a 5.5-inch HD TFT LCD display, a 1.2 GHz or 1.5 GHz octa-core Marvel PXA1936 processor with 1.5GB RAM and 4GB/8GB internal storage. Both handsets will have an 8-megapixel rear camera and will be powered by Android 5.1 out of the box.

Bluetooth certification is usually one of the last steps before a device is brought to market so if history is any indication we might soon see Samsung officially announce the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7.

Samsung reportedly developing a new method to produce Galaxy S6 edge’s curved display

There’s a reason why the Galaxy S6 edge is the most expensive device that Samsung has ever produced, the dual edge display is the most expensive component as it needs to be put through an arduous process. However it’s certainly paying off for Samsung as recent reports suggest that demand for the Galaxy S6 edge has skyrocketed, which may ultimately help the company reach the forecast goal of 55 million unit shipments of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge combined this year.

A new report out of Korea claims that Samsung is developing a new method for the production of the Galaxy S6 edge’s display. Currently the panel is heated on both sides before it’s bent on the left and right edges. Polishing it afterwards is a major expense since heating it to such a high temperature causes micro wrinkles, which is why Samsung has been struggling with low yield. With the new method only one side of the glass panel will be heated so that micro wrinkles are reduced and production costs are decreased, moreover this could also improve yields for the company by up to 60-70 percent. Samsung is believed to be testing this new method at its manufacturing facilities in Vietnam and may soon use it on the production line.

Samsung launches the Level On Wireless and Level Link

Samsung has launched two new additions to its Level series of audio products – Level On Wireless and Level Link. Level On Wireless is the second on-ear headphone in the Level lineup, and its USP seems to be the wide variety of punchy colors it will be available in (Blue Black, Blue, Red, White) and the inclusion of six built-in microphones for active noise cancellation.

Samsung is touting a “sleek, sophisticated look and feel” for Level On Wireless, and at least from the pictures, it does seem like the headphone won’t look cheap despite its full colored body. Like other Level headphones, the Level On Wireless can be used without wires thanks to the inbuilt Bluetooth technology, and comes with support for S Voice and other music controls that will work with Samsung’s phones and tablets. Oh, and it also supports sharing tunes with other users of the Level On Wireless through what Samsung is calling the Sound Sharing function, which looks like a play on the company’s Group Play feature.

Read MoreReview: Samsung LEVELover (EO-AG9008) over-ear headphones

As for the Level Link, it’s basically a device that will let you turn any conventional set of speakers or earphones into a wireless audio device – users will be able to connect any standard speaker, earphone or other audio output device to the Level Link, and then connect Level Link to a phone or other Bluetooth-enabled for a wireless audio listening experience. Sound Sharing is supported here as well, and the Level Link will be available in Charcoal Black, Blue, Red, White color options.

Samsung hasn’t detailed availability or pricing, but we’re guessing the Level On Wireless and Level Link will launch in the US first, with other markets to follow later.

Angry Birds now available on Tizen

With so many versions of Angry Birds having come out ever since the original took the mobile gaming world by storm, the bird-slinging game isn’t exactly a must-have app for mobile devices anymore. But for a new and young operating system like Tizen, popular apps and games are no doubt a necessity if it needs to have any chance of making it big in the market, and Samsung’s in-house OS can now boast about having the first Angry Birds available in its app store.

That’s right – Tizen users can now download Angry Birds from the Tizen Store, with OpenMobile’s ACL emulation technology making it possible for the game to run on the OS. For those who don’t remember, the same emulation technology is also what enables WhatsApp to run on Tizen, and like WhatsApp, getting Angry Birds is as easy as downloading it from the app store instead of having to manually deal with any installation files.

The game is 47MB in size, and might require you to install the ACL for Tizen app before it can run on your phone. Sadly, the game isn’t very smooth on the Samsung Z1, but that’s not really surprising when you considering the extremely meager hardware that is powering Samsung’s only commercially available Tizen smartphone.

Poor RAM management affecting the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Have you noticed your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge killing apps too quickly during usage, and still taking up a lot of the available RAM at all times? Well, you’re not alone, as this issue seems to be affecting a lot of users out there, some of whom have voiced their concern over on the XDA development forums.

I’ve personally been irritated by the horrendous RAM management on my Galaxy S6 edge – apps like WhatsApp and Facebook, which usually stay in memory and show up instantly on devices with 2GB+ RAM, often take time to load as the phone keeps killing their processes. It’s a problem with browsing as well. Chrome will often reload when you go back to it, even if you have only opened one other app after sending it to the background.

Android is designed to remove older apps from memory to free up RAM for current tasks, but the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge seem to take it too far despite having 3GB of RAM (and considerably less bloat than previous Samsung devices taking up memory.) However, the fact that despite killing apps too quickly the phones seem to have very little available RAM suggests it’s a bug and not something deliberate.

Some might say that this is a fault of Android 5.0 Lollipop – indeed, Lollipop does have a memory leak issue, but that doesn’t make the OS aggressive against keeping apps in memory on other devices. Hopefully, Samsung will fix what is one of the very few issues on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge’s software through a software update as soon as it possibly can, as there doesn’t seem to be any stop-gap solution to the problem at this point.

Samsung announces Galaxy Gifts package for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Samsung’s made it a tradition to offer a plethora of free premium content with its flagship smartphones, and it’s no different this year with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. This time around, Samsung says it is matching the premium experience of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge with the content it will offer for free through the Galaxy Gifts package, though most of it seems to be rather similar to what was attached to previous flagships.

The entire content is around $500 in total value, and includes things like a subscription to Audible, The Economist, Evernote, and Kindle (one free eBook each month.) According to Samsung, these apps will need to be downloaded through its Galaxy Apps store for the offers to be valid, though as we’ve seen in the past, apps like Evernote should let you access the premium subscription even if they’re downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Head over to the source link for more details on the Galaxy Gifts package for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

Galaxy S6 edge gets the “edge” over the Note 4, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in camera shootout

DxOMark, a company known for its photography and videography testing, brings back the ultimate camera shootout for those who like to see if Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 edge “has the right stuff” to become a bragging right.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus took the lead after Samsung’s Galaxy S5, but Samsung returned to the top of the pack with its Galaxy Note 4 – which slightly “edges” out the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (no offense to the Note Edge). Of course, it goes without saying that the Note, while the top Samsung device (in our highest opinion), isn’t every Samsung fan’s cup of tea, and the Galaxy S6 edge will appeal because of its smaller form factor.

In any case, Samsung’s most prestigious Galaxy S6 (the edge, no doubt) has been tested alongside the Galaxy Note 4, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 6. The conclusion? The Galaxy S6 edge’s photography and videography are tough customers (in a good way, that is).

The Galaxy S6 edge excelled in its photography, with the lowest rating in the category pertaining to artifacts (79). Samsung’s newest smartphone to catch its consumer base off guard scored an “87” out of 100 in the flash department, 84 in its noise, 85 in color. The “brightest” spots for the S6 edge were in the categories of texture (90), exposure and contrast (90), and autofocus (94). Samsung’s videography categories trailed that of its photography categories somewhat, but the S6 edge achieved a marvelous feat in its videography noise with a score of 96 out of 100 – the most impressive mark yet for smartphone videography. The one blemish to the success of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge in the new shootout pertained to the company’s image stabilization, which received a score of 59 out of 100.

DxOMark praised the Galaxy S6 edge for its fast autofocus, a sign that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge has come a long way from the autofocus of its predecessors. When Samsung said that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge had no lag, the company wasn’t joking.

So, there you have it: the Galaxy S6 edge provides a stellar photography and videography experience, and the low score on image stabilization gives the Korean manufacturer something to work toward with future smartphones. It is our hope that this report will add to the S6 edge’s increasing consumer demand.

Hit up the link below to see shootout photos, as well as details behind the S6 edge’s superior rating.

YouTube documentary tries to figure out just how big Samsung really is

It’s a common misconception among people that Samsung only makes home appliances and mobile devices. The South Korean conglomerate does much more than that but it can often be hard to keep track of every business that its in. A new short documentary has been released on YouTube which tackles an important question: just how big Samsung really is? Did you know that they have a military department? Well you’ll find that out when you watch the documentary.

The documentary begins by explaining how Samsung came into being. It was founded back in 1938 and initially it was a trading company that dealt in groceries. By 1950 it was in insurance, securities and retail. A decade later Samsung produced its first electronic device, a 12-inch black and white TV set. Many of us now use multiple Samsung products daily, be it home appliances, smartphones or tablets, light bulbs, headphones, laptops and much more. The conglomerate also has a robust component business that provides components like displays and processors to many companies such as Apple.

This 12-minute documentary goes into a lot of detail about Samsung’s early days and how it became the behemoth it is today. It’s certainly a worth your time to watch it.
