Samsung’s Buy and Try program lets you try foldable Galaxy phones for 100 days

There is no doubt that Samsung makes the best foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has received extremely positive reviews around the world. However, they cost a lot and they might not suit everyone. Hence, the South Korean firm is offering consumers a chance to try out foldable phones for up to 100 days before making a commitment.

Usually, consumers in the US can buy and try smartphones for up to two weeks from Best Buy and Samsung. However, the South Korean firm has decided to extend that return window by letting buyers try out the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for up to 100 days with its new Buy and Try program. The new program is available exclusively through Samsung.com in the US and is valid until April 1, 2021.

If you are in the US, you can pay the full amount and try the Galaxy Z Flip 5G or the Galaxy Z Fold 2. If you are not satisfied with Samsung’s foldable smartphones, you can return them within 100 days. The company is offering up to $550 trade-in credit and a $200 instant rebate to buy accessories from its website. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G costs $1,199, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is priced at $1,999.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 are 5G smartphones with foldable screens (protected by Ultra Thin Glass) and are equipped with the Snapdragon 865+ processor. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G features a 12MP+12MP dual-camera setup, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a 12MP+12MP+12MP triple-camera setup. Both foldable phones have 10MP selfie cameras, Wi-Fi 6, and wireless charging.

Samsung begins mass production of its most advanced SSDs for data centers

Samsung has announced that it has started the mass production of its most advanced data center SSD lineup yet. Apart from being available in various storage sizes and form factors, the PM9A3 E1.S SSD lineup is fully-compliant with the OCP (Open Compute Project) NVMe Cloud SSD specification.

The PM9A3 E1.S is built using Samsung’s sixth-generation (1xx-layer) V-NAND, and it offers a sequential write speed at 3000MB/s. It also features a random read speed of 750K IOPS and random writes at 160K IOPS. Compared to the fifth-generation V-NAND-based PM983a, the PM9A3 offers double the sequential write speed, 40% higher random read speed, and 150% higher random writes.

It is available in nine power levels so that it suits a diverse range of needs from data center clients. It is available from 8.25W M.2 form factor to 35W EDSFF (Enterprise and Data Center SSD Form Factor). Apart from the usual data encryption techniques, the new SSDs also offer secure boot and anti-rollback mechanisms so that it becomes impossible to install older or flawed firmware.

Samsung’s new enterprise-focused SSD lineup offers a power efficiency of 283MB/s per watt for sequential writes, which is 50% more efficient than previous-generation SSDs. The South Korean firm claims that replacing all server HDDs launched in 2020 with the PM9A3 4TB drives would save up to 1,484 GWh of energy. That is enough electricity to power all households in a major metropolitan city during a month of summer.

The company said that it will continue to work with its clients to standardize newer storage technologies and work on more cutting-edge memory solutions. Samsung had recently unveiled its second-generation HBM memory with built-in AI processing units for cloud servers and data centers.

Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor to debut inside Xiaomi smartphone

Samsung revealed its second-generation 50MP camera sensor yesterday. The new sensor brings autofocus and HDR improvements over the ISOCELL GN1 50MP sensor that was launched last year. It has now been revealed that Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor will debut inside a Xiaomi smartphone this year.

According to a tweet from IceUniverse (@UniverseIce), the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will be the first smartphone to use the 50MP ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor. The smartphone was leaked a few days ago, featuring a triple-camera setup. It is expected to feature a 50MP primary camera, a 48MP telephoto camera with a 5x periscope lens, and a 48MP ultrawide camera. At the front, the phone has a 20MP selfie camera.

Other features of the upcoming Xiaomi phone include a Snapdragon 888 processor, a 6.81-inch QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, IP68 rating, 5,000mAh battery, 67W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, 10W reverse wireless charging, and a secondary display beside the rear camera setup. The phone runs Android 11 with MIUI 12.5.

The ISOCELL GN2 sensor has a 50MP resolution, 1.4µm pixels, Dual Pixel Pro autofocus, Smart ISO, Smart ISO Pro, staggered HDR, and 4-in-1 pixel binning (effectively 12.5MP images with 2.8μm pixels). It can record 4K videos at 120fps and Full HD 1080p videos at 480fps. It can also capture 100MP images, thanks to its re-mosaic algorithm. Samsung claims that it offers faster and more reliable autofocus and improved HDR performance.

Xiaomi has always been among the first smartphone brands in the world to use new ISOCELL camera sensors from Samsung. The Redmi Note 7 was the first to use Samsung’s ISOCELL GM1 48MP sensor, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro was the first to use the ISOCELL GW1 64MP sensor. Samsung’s first 108MP sensor, the ISOCELL HMX, debuted with the Mi Note 10.

Galaxy M62 will debut outside India next week as a rebadged Galaxy F62

Samsung’s been releasing new smartphones left and right lately, so hopefully you’re ready for yet another addition to the company’s mobile portfolio, as the Galaxy M62 is about to go live. It’s a mid-range phone, and in case you haven’t put two and two together yet, it should hit the shelves as a rebranded Galaxy F62 destined for release outside of India.

Mind you, Samsung has yet to officially unveiled the Galaxy M62 specifications but today it published a ton of official renders ahead of the phone’s imminent release. Meanwhile, the company also confirmed via Facebook that the Galaxy M62 will be coming to Malaysia soon.

How soon, you ask? March 3 is the date when the Galaxy M62 should be going live in Malaysia through retail partner Lazada. The e-shop doesn’t reveal any specifications pertaining to the device, except for the 7,000mAh monster battery which once again indicates that the Galaxy M62 should be a rebadged Galaxy F62 through and through.

The Galaxy M62 is expected to go on sale in various markets, and it might also be (re)released in India through other retailers besides Flipkart. Pricing details are missing but the Galaxy F62 was released in India for INR 23,999 ($331) and the Galaxy M62 should cost about the same.

The Galaxy F62 is equipped with a flagship-grade Exynos 9825 chipset paired with 6GB / 8GB of RAM, and the Galaxy M62 should offer the same hardware configuration. The official renders confirm the same color range including Laser Blue, Laser Gray, and Laser Green, so hopefully the phone will also ship with the full-fledged version of One UI 3.1 just like the Galaxy F62 does.

Finally, Amazon has also dropped 25% off the full retail price of the 45mm Galaxy Watch 3 Titanium. This variant normally costs $599 but prospective buyers can now acquire it for $449.

Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G price drops below $1,000 with new Amazon deal

Early Galaxy S21 pre-order figures suggest that Samsung’s new flagship series already enjoys a lot of success in several key markets, more so than the previous flagship models. The company’s pre-order deals and incentives have helped boost sales early on, and a new discount presently offered by Amazon for the Galaxy S21 series in the USA should get even more people on board with Samsung’s latest premium smartphones. If you haven’t purchased the Galaxy S21 already, this might be a good opportunity to change that.

The unlocked Galaxy S21 5G with 128GB of built-in storage is now available at Amazon for 16%, or the price of $674 instead of the usual $799. The 256GB variant benefits from an 18% discount, which means that prospective buyers could acquire it for $699 as opposed to $849.

Next up is the Galaxy S21+ 5G with 128GB or 256GB of storage, which is now available for 20% and 24% off, respectively. Interestingly enough, this latest Amazon discount makes it so that both the 128GB and 256GB Galaxy S21+ models have the exact same $799 price, which makes one wonder why anyone would buy the 128GB variant when they could get double the storage for the same price.

Last but certainly not least, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G can now be yours for less than $1,000. Amazon has discounted the 128GB and 512GB models by $200, which means that customers are able to buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G with 128GB / 512GB of storage for $999 and $1,179, respectively. As of this writing, the 256GB variant is out of stock and it might not return before this ongoing Amazon deal expires.

Samsung backs talented youth in fight against inequality

Samsung is backing a handful of talented youth from all corners of the planet in their global fight against inequality. The company confirmed as much just moments ago, revealing yet another milestone in an ambitious undertaking called Generation 17. This initiative was started in partnership with the United Nations back in October and appears to be pretty much guaranteed to continue moving ahead for the foreseeable future.

The idea behind the movement was firing up today’s tech-savvy youth. I.e., finding ways to motivate them into contributing to a variety of highly progressive initiatives seeking the betterment of all mankind

The 2020 pandemic only these young people’ resolve to make a difference

There are 17 such goals in total, hence the name of the campaign. While announcing today’s latest youth ambassadors, Samsung officials said the youth at the center of Generation 17 already made progress on 10 of those issues since October. The mission list includes noble objectives such as combating inequality, pursuing more sustainable economic policies, and championing tolerance, among other such endeavors.

One of the four youth activists joining the front lines of Generation 17 is 26-year-old Yejin Choi, a Korean entrepreneur and therapist who spearheaded development of a mobile app seeking to boost early-age education opportunities for children with disabilities. Brazilian Daniel Calarco, Ukrainian Yurii Romashko, and Lebanese Nadine Kaouli all have similarly socially impactful stories.

After all, their individual efforts are what yielded this opportunity in the first place. And last year’s pandemic only strengthened the resolve of everyone involved, according to the campaign. Come to think of it, that particular sentiment does seem kind of familiar.

Google may make its own foldable smartphone with Samsung’s help

The foldable smartphone market has massive potential and Samsung Display is in the perfect position to capitalize on it. The company’s foldable panels have already been used in successful consumer devices like the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2.

So it’s now going to sell foldable display panels to other companies that want to make foldable smartphones. A new report has revealed some details about the panels that Samsung Display is preparing for the likes of Google, Oppo and Xiaomi.

Google to jump on the foldable bandwagon as well?

It was first reported last month that Samsung Display will now begin supplying foldable panels to other companies. The company certainly views the foldable market as a great driver of growth. It’s reportedly looking to ship up to one million foldable panels to different companies this year.

A report out of Korea reveals some details about the panels being prepared for customers that include Google, Oppo and Xiaomi. It appears that Oppo might be launching a clamshell foldable like the Galaxy Z Flip. It’s sourcing an in-folding 7.7-inch clamshell panel that’s larger than the Galaxy Z Flip’s 6.7-inch display.

Xiaomi is considering a form factor, not unlike that of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, for its new foldable. It already showcased a prototype last year that had a 7.92-inch panel. It’s now looking to source an 8.03-inch foldable panel from Samsung.

Google might be thinking about getting in the foldable smartphone game as well. It has reportedly asked Samsung Display to develop a foldable panel around 7.60-inch in size. It’s unclear what form factor Google might choose for its device.

There’s also the possibility that it may never go past the prototype stage. So even if Google is considering a foldable smartphone, it’s too soon to be certain that the search engine giant will end up releasing it.

Given how highly Google is regarded for its hardware efforts, particularly with the Pixel smartphone lineup, a foldable smartphone from Mountain View will definitely be one to watch out for.

Latest One UI Home update lets you customize folder grids

You might be familiar with One UI Home. This is what Samsung calls the launcher for One UI, its custom Android skin. The launcher is an essential part of the user interface as it allows you to launch apps and also to customize different aspects of the UI.

Since it’s unbundled from the OS as an app, it’s easier for Samsung to send new updates for One UI Home without having to release a separate firmware upgrade. One such update is now being sent out for the app that lets you customize folder grids.

One UI Home adds folder grids option

The latest version of Samsung One UI Home that is out now adds a folder grid option menu in the launcher’s settings. It also improves performance when using swipe gestures. The regular slew of bug fixes and stability improvements is included as well.

This new Folder grid option can be accessed from the home screen settings menu (you can access it by pinching the home screen and tapping Settings). Tapping on it reveals the two available options: 3X4 and 4X4. This refers to the number of apps that will form the grid. If you prefer larger icons, opt for 3X4. If smaller icons are more to your liking or you have folders with a lot of apps, go with the 4X4 grid instead.

It’s a minor yet useful addition that provides you with yet another option to customize One UI as you see fit. The latest One UI Home update is rolling out now. You should receive it in the near future from the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store if you haven’t already.

Codenames for two new Samsung smartwatches may be a Wear OS hint

Samsung is already believed to be working on a new smartwatch for 2021. However, if the latest report is any indication, the company may actually have two new models in the pipeline. That’s two entirely separate models, mind you, not one model in two different sizes.

A new report has brought us the purported codenames that Samsung is using internally for these devices. With speculation mounting that Samsung could ditch Tizen for Wear OS, at least one of these codenames could actually be hinting in that direction.

Codenames for Samsung’s 2021 watches revealed

It was reported last week that a new smartwatch with model numbers SM-R86x and SM-R87x is in the pipeline. Going by Samsung’s naming convention, these numbers correspond to two different sizes of a new Galaxy Watch model.

It’s now claimed by the folks over at GalaxyClub that Samsung has two separate smartwatch models in development with codenames Wise and Fresh. It’s unclear at this point in time what the model number for the second new smartwatch is. One can assume that Samsung may offer it in two sizes as well.

We’ve been hearing whispers for a while now that Samsung might shift from Tizen to Android (Wear OS) for its smartwatches. The company hasn’t made an Android-powered watch for over six years so it’s going to be a massive change.

Will it make the change more palatable by offering one Tizen and one Android smartwatch this year? Is that what the Fresh codename refers to, a fresh approach to smartwatches that relies on Google’s platform?

Only time will tell how Samsung plans to proceed. We’ve already discussed before that a Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watch won’t be such a bad idea. So let’s keep an open idea and see how things progress. Samsung is likely going to unveil its new smartwatches in the second half of the year.

After Huawei, Samsung is the biggest loser in 2020 smartphone sales

A new market report from Gartner labeled Huawei and Samsung as the biggest losers in the 2020 smartphone race, in that particular order. Both companies saw their annual growth trends reversed over the course of the last year, though Huawei lost ground at a nearly quadruple rate to Samsung. Granted, Samsung can hardly take pride in that stark difference, given the unique difficulties Huawei faced on top of a global pandemic.

The good news is that Samsung managed to recover its trajectory in the final quarter of the year, according to Gartner’s insights. More specifically, while its year-over-year growth rate was at nearly -12%, the fourth-quarter sales managed to surpass 62 million devices, 16.2% up compared to the same period in 2019.

Is the worst yet to come for Samsung?

Samsung still needs to double down on its recovery rate if it wants to make up for the gap that’s separating it from Apple as of the final three months of 2020. These insights are largely in line with what other industry watchers have observed in recent weeks. Besides Huawei, Samsung is the only major smartphone manufacturer that sold significantly fewer devices last year than in 2019. That’s likely a big part of the reason why it was so eager to start 2021 on a high note with an uncharacteristically early release of the Galaxy S21 range.

Such fierce initiative was also what served Samsung well at the end of 2020. E.g., Gartner’s data suggests the Galaxy S20 FE did a lot of heavy lifting in the company’s efforts to salvage whatever it can last quarter. Given that state of affairs, the worst is likely behind Samsung, at least as far as the immediate effects of a global pandemic are concerned.

New rumor reveals Samsung’s custom AMD GPU is coming soon

It’s been known for some time now that Samsung and AMD have been working on a custom GPU. It will be paired with Samsung’s Exynos processors for mobile devices. Nothing has been officially unveiled as yet but chances are that our wait may be ending soon.

A new rumor has come up and it suggests that Samsung’s custom AMD GPU may be unveiled in the near future. It backs up another recent report which made a similar claim regarding the GPU’s launch.

Samsung x AMD custom GPU could be unveiled in June

Popular tipster @UniverseIce is claiming that Samsung is tentatively planning to showcase the custom GPU developed with AMD in June. The company will only be revealing the technical details and specifications at this stage. The actual chipsets that utilize the custom GPU will come later.

An earlier report from the same source claimed that new Exynos chipsets with the integrated AMD GPUs will be out in the second or third quarter of this year. Samsung has already said that its “next flagship product” will feature this GPU.

What’s not known at this point is whether Samsung plans on introducing this new chipset with the Galaxy Note 21 or the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Some believe that Samsung will only launch it with the Galaxy S22 which is not due to arrive before next year.

An early graphics benchmark of a purported next-gen Exynos chipset with the AMD GPU appears to crush Apple’s A14 Bionic. If Samsung does reveal the technical details of its custom GPU by June, we will at least be able to understand how it’s going to stack up against its competitors.
