06-22-2015 Firmware Updates: Galaxy A7, Galaxy A5, Galaxy S5, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the weekend through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Here’s what is possible with RAW image capture on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge

Support for shooting in RAW is one of the important features introduced in Android 5.0 Lollipop, but despite the presence of a Pro camera mode in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, the option for saving images in RAW wasn’t included. As we had exclusively revealed, the feature was to be introduced in Android 5.1.1, which turned out to be true, just not in the way we had imagined.

The Android 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge does support RAW image capture, but you will need to use a third-party camera app – Manual Camera is a good example – to actually be able to do it. But what exactly does saving images in RAW format offer the end user? Well, if you have knowledge of Photoshop and other image editing tools, there’s quite a lot you can do. RAW images are unprocessed images that don’t suffer from the artifacts and quality reduction introduced when an image is saved in the standard JPG format, and as you can see in the image below, you can change a lot of parameters to make the end result look much better/different than normal.

Again, editing RAW images and getting something useful requires you to know your way around Photoshop. If you have the requisite skills, it’s easy to see the advantages RAW image capture can provide; it’s too bad Samsung hasn’t yet updated its camera app to offer the option to the end user, but we’re hoping the company will get around to that in a software update for the S6 devices in the future.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition with a Spreadtrum processor gets benchmarked

Samsung hasn’t stopped making multiple variants of its device with small changes here and there. It recently launched the Galaxy S6 Active with a durable design, and will reportedly release a variant of the Galaxy S6 edge with a larger screen dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

Now, a new variant of the Galaxy Grand Prime has surfaced on the Internet. It variant will be sold as the Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition, and was initially leaked two weeks ago. Last week, it was reported that Samsung has swapped out the Snapdragon 410 SoC from the original Grand Prime with a 64-bit quad-core Cortex-A53 Marvell PXA1908 SoC in the Grand Prime Value Edition.

Now, GSMArena is reporting about a new variant (SM-G531H) of the device that is equipped with a Spreadtrum SC8830 processor. This chipset combines a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU with a Mali-400MP2 GPU. Other specifications include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, Android 5.0 Lollipop, an 8-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, LTE connectivity, and a 2,600 mAh battery.

International Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925F) getting Android 5.1.1 update as well

We were surprised to see the Android 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 wasn’t accompanied by an update for the Galaxy S6 edge earlier today, as both devices have received updates at the same time before this. But it seems the delay was very slight, as the Android 5.1.1 update has now shown up for the curvy Galaxy S6 and is currently rolling out over Kies. An over the air version will no doubt go live very soon, and you can start checking if it’s available by hitting the Check now button in the Settings » About device » Software updates menu on your Galaxy S6 edge.

You can also download the firmware from our firmware database – it wouldn’t usually be long before an update’s availability would spread to more regions, though with Android 5.1.1 a somewhat major update, it could be a couple of weeks before every region gets it.

Samsung Galaxy A8 makes its way through the FCC

The Galaxy A8 (SM-A800) just moved a step closer to an official launch, as the upcoming Galaxy A smartphone has made an appearance on the FCC, barely a week after we saw it in the flesh over in China. The FCC filing doesn’t give us any useful details (except confirming that it will feature all of the standard connectivity options, including dual-band Wi-Fi and LTE), but it does complete one of the many pit stops a smartphone has to make before it can be unveiled to the consumer.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we don’t already know a lot about the Galaxy A8. As we exclusively detailed last month, the Galaxy A8 should feature a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras, 16GB of internal storage, and a 3,050 mAh battery. The phone will also have a touch fingerprint sensor, run Android 5.0 Lollipop, and have an extremely thin 5.9 mm metallic frame.

These specs were recently confirmed by China’s TENAA, and the leaked photos that we saw last week – coupled with the FCC listing – suggest it won’t be long before Samsung takes the wraps off the Galaxy A8.

Samsung expected to ship 45 million Galaxy S6 and S6 edge units this year

It’s been coming of age for Samsung, a company that finally seems to have gotten the flagship right with the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge. The entry-level and mid-range market may not be too accommodating for Samsung, but the company sure is making it up with its high-end models in the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge.

According to a report by Deutsche Bank, the high-end market has been kind to Samsung, and it’s here to stay; which is why, Samsung is expected to ship a massive 45 million units in the S6 and the S6 edge alone. Now, that’s quite a huge number, especially considering the S6 and the S6 edge aren’t the cheapest flagships around. It also goes to show that the design experiment that Samsung did with the S6 edge has gone down well with the market.

T-Mobile just started updating the Galaxy S5 to Android 5.1.1

T-Mobile might just be on the way to becoming the favorite carrier for those rocking a Samsung flagship. The carrier was the first to update the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge to Android 5.1.1, and it has now started rolling out the latest version of Android for the Galaxy S5. That’s right – Galaxy S5 users on T-Mobile just scored Android 5.1.1 before most Galaxy S6 and S6 edge owners around the world.

We’re not sure what changes are included in the update, but you can expect to see performance improvements, support for RAW and lower ISO values if you’re using a third-party camera app that makes use of Lollipop’s camera API, and a slew of bug fixes. The update should be rolling out over the air later today and over the coming days, and you can also download the full firmware from our firmware section or update through Samsung Kies.

Have you received the Android 5.1.1 update on your Galaxy S5? Let us know in the comments!

Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy S6 is now seeding in France

Samsung announced the Android 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge a while back, but this is the first time the users of the device based in France are getting a taste of the updated Lollipop ROM.

The update measures 623MB in size, so nothing out of the ordinary here. The update brings in a few optimization and then some tweaks, both of which should result in a better user experience. For one, you can now sort applications alphabetically, reports Planet Galaxy. The camera app gets a little revamp of its own, too; you can now adjust exposure right from the viewfinder. Convenient!

Now for the bad part: it looks like the RAM issue that’s plagued the device seems to persist; the phone boots with 58% of RAM used which quickly rockets to over 80% when you start using the phone. Here’s hoping that the guys at Samsung get rid of the issue soon!
