Samsung executive claims that bendable display launch is “right around the corner”

Three days ago, a report was published by Bloomberg suggesting that Samsung may release two smartphones with bendable displays in 2017. However the head of Samsung’s North American business, Gregory Lee, seems to think they’ll hit the market a little sooner than expected as when asked about the technology at Rutberg’s Future: Mobile conference in Half Moon Bay yesterday, he said that he thinks a launch is “right around the corner.”

Lee then went on to reveal that Samsung has produced various bendable display prototypes over the course of the past ten years. There has been one major problem with all of them, though, and it comes in the form of pricing. He claims that it has “been very difficult to manufacture [the technology] at a reasonable cost,” which means that unless the process is refined, the final price of the product will be too much for the average consumer to afford.

Samsung will launch its mobile payment platform in Singapore on June 16

Samsung has today announced that it will launch its mobile payment platform in Singapore on Thursday, June 16. This news comes just one month after the South Korean company opened a beta testing scheme in the region, which enabled a small selection of eager customers to sign up for the opportunity to test Samsung Pay before it went live for all compatible smartphones in the country.

At launch, users will be able to add any MasterCard, Visa, Citibank, DBS/POSB, OCBC Bank or Standard Chartered credit/debit card to their virtual wallet, and will be able to use it to pay for goods in forty major franchises, which includes supermarkets, convenience stores, department stores, restaurants, clothes stores, electronics stores and travel agencies.

Unfortunately, the service will only be available on a small selection of handsets in Singapore to start with – the Galaxy Note 5 4G+, Galaxy S6 edge+ 4G+, Galaxy S7 4G+ and Galaxy S7 edge 4G+. However, we expect compatibility to expand to some of the firm’s most recent smartphones, such as the Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2016), in the not-too-distant future.

Samsung announces global launch of the Gear Fit 2

Samsung has announced today that its new wearable fitness tracker is now commercially available in select markets across the globe. The Gear Fit 2 is now available in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and Australia. The company says that it’s going to launch this product gradually in more countries across the globe. Pre-orders have already been live for the product and starting today it’s going to be much easier to get your hands on this new Samsung product.

The Gear Fit 2 is a robust fitness tracking and activity measurement device that features an embedded GPS and heart rate monitor. It’s capable of automatically detecting the type of activity the user is engaging in and then tracks their progress. It has a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED curved display, functions as a standalone music player, and seamless integration with S Health. The Gear Fit 2 is compatible with smartphones running Android version 4.4 or higher with at least 1.5GB RAM. It’s available in black, blue, and pink colors. Tesla may use Samsung SDI batteries in its standalone energy systems

A couple of days ago it was reported that Samsung SDI could start supplying battery cells for the Tesla Model 3. Tesla CEO Elon Musk refuted the reports, saying that the company was working exclusively with Panasonic on battery cells for the upcoming electric car. That single tweet from Musk wiped nearly $600 million from Samsung SDI’s market cap but it looks like there’s still a chance that both companies might work together at some point.

In a response to his clarification about the previous report, Musk was asked if Samsung SDI might supply batteries for Tesla Energy, to which he simply replied “yes.” For those who are unaware, Tesla Energy is a business unit that sells standalone energy systems for homes and businesses called Powerwall and Powerpack respectively. It has already delivered more than 2,500 Powerwalls and nearly 500 Powerpacks batteries in Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. So even if Samsung might not supply Tesla with batteries for its cars because the latter has an arrangement with Panasonic, even Musk sees no reason why Samsung SDI battery cells shouldn’t make it into Tesla Energy products. This news gave some breathing room to Samsung SDI’s shares, they rose by over 4 percent after this report was published online.

Samsung’s new video explains how to get started with the Gear Fit 2

Samsung unveiled the Gear Fit 2 last week along with the activity tracking Gear Icon X earphones, and pre-orders for the GPS-equipped fitness band went live earlier this week. Now, Samsung has released a new video that demonstrates how to get started with the Gear Fit 2.

The Gear Fit 2, which comes with a wireless magnetic cradle for charging, can be paired with a smartphone using the Gear Manager app. The device can not only track casual activity like steps taken, and stairs climbed but also bicycle rides and runs since it comes equipped with GPS and a heart-rate monitor.

The activity and fitness data can be synced to the cloud using the S Health app, which can be used to keep up with friends’ activities and to take step challenges. The smart fitness band can also show smartphone notifications and widgets on its 1.5-inch curved Super AMOLED display.

The Gear Fit 2 can also act as a standalone music player as it features 4GB of internal storage, which can be used to store music tracks. It competes with the likes of Garmin Vivosmart HR+ and Fitbit Blaze. Watch the video embedded below to see the Gear Fit 2 in action.

Samsung is the most trustworthy company for millennials in the US

Millennials in the US are a generation of an estimated 75 million people aged between 18 and 34 so it goes without saying that their opinion matters. A reputation management consulting firm called The Reputation Institute uses its proprietary scoring system to offer corporate clients insights into how reputable their company is considered by the people. This year the firm focused on millennials in the United States to find out which companies they believe to be the most reputable. Millennials gave the top spot to Samsung.

The Reputation Institute assigns each company a score called The RepTrak Pulse. The score is based on admiration, trust, esteem, and the feelings the general public has for each company in performance, products and services, innovation, workplace, governance, leadership, and citizenship. Samsung ranked highest in five out of RI’s seven dimensions as it claimed the top score in all but product and services and governance categories.

The RI notes that Samsung’s stellar reputation before the millennial consumer is aided by its campaigns on social media, its commitment to social responsibility, creating an inclusive culture within the company, and the products that it releases to impress the younger generation. Samsung’s position has improved in the latest survey, it surged by 9.3 points over last year’s results. The company’s score improved in every dimension ranked by RI. Companies that follow Samsung on the list of most trustworthy companies include Nike, Johnson & Johnson, and Intel.

Samsung launches beta program for “New Note UX”

Samsung has launched a new beta program for the “New Note UX,” it’s giving users based in Korea and China to test out the new user interface for its Android-based devices. Reports suggest that this user interface won’t just be limited to the Note lineup of handsets, it’s expected to arrive on the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S6 series as well.

Screenshots show that the UI looks more modern and clean than before, with updated app icons and colors. The company hasn’t said yet if it plans to roll out the Galaxy Beta Program to other markets across the globe. For now, it appears that only users in Korea and China will be given the ability to test drive the new Note UX. The beta program is expected to run for a couple of months before this new user interface is released for all eligible devices in August this year.

Samsung Pay finally updated with support for Fifth Third Bank

Six months later than expected, Fifth Third Bank has finally introduced support for Samsung Pay. However, customers will be disappointed to hear that registering their card for use with the mobile payment platform isn’t a simple procedure. Instead of just inputting the card number, expiry date and security digits like you do with most cards, those who do their banking with Fifth Third will first have to ring their local branch to enroll their card for use with the service.

It’s also worth noting that not all of Firth Third’s cards are supported, which means that you’re going to have to head over to Samsung’s website to see which are compatible and which aren’t. If yours isn’t there, don’t be too alarmed because the South Korean company is continuously adding new cards to its lineup all of the time. It simply means that you’ll just have to wait a little while longer to start using Samsung Pay.

Samsung unveils ‘The Next Big Thing’ in the printing industry

Samsung held its annual European Printing Partner Summit from 8th – 9th June in Budapest, Hungary to unveil ‘The Next Big Thing in Printing Solutions.’ The company presented its strategy, highlighted key developments over the past one year, and gave insights on global printing solution trends.

Samsung highlighted its complete range of smart printing solutions, printing hardware, and its Channel Managed Print Services (MPS) + Plus program. The MPS Print+ program, which received a lot of attention, provides simple, automated, low-cost MPS solutions to Samsung partners. The company also showcased mobile printing, Remote Call (a paid remote service app designed to minimize service visits), and the Samsung Smart Printer Diagnostic System (SPDS).

“We are striving to bring innovation to the European market through our unique ability to create solutions that integrate multifunction devices for smart office environments. Samsung will continue to expand its B2B printing market share through collaborations with industry leaders and partners to build a new printing ecosystem,” said David SW Song, Senior Vice President of Printing Solutions Business at Samsung Electronics.

The South Korean firm won the Range of the Year award from Buyers Laboratory Inc. for its professional printing solutions. Samsung will launch its MPS Print+ program in the UK and Belgium this month, and the rollout to other European countries will happen in the second half of 2016.

Samsung takes a look at some of the ways its helped to preserve the environmennt

For as long as I can remember, Samsung has always played an active roll in the preservation and conservation of the environment. The firm has dedicated a countless amount of time and money to tackling some of Earth’s most crucial issues, which include climate change, pollution, environment degradation and resource depletion. In honor of the United Nations’ World Environment Day (WED) that took place on June 5, the South Korean company has today published a blog post detailing a mere handful of the ways that it has helped to work towards solving the aforementioned issues.

What makes Samsung’s efforts so unique is that its employees actually take part in the work and the labor isn’t outsourced, so it shows that the manufacturer cares and, therefore, a difference is being made. Over the course of the past year, eight environment cleanups campaigns have taken place, where employees have gotten their hands dirty by planting trees, collecting trash from brownfield areas, installing water economizing faucets, cleaning up garbage along the shoreline of beaches and setting up environmental education facilities to teach young people the importance of preserving the environment.

Apple vs. Samsung patent case should go back to lower court: US Department of Justice

The US Department of Justice has suggested the Supreme Court that the Apple vs. Samsung smartphone patent litigation case should go back to a lower court. The Supreme Court was asked to overturn an appeals court ruling that had favored Apple over Samsung and asked that it return the case to the trial court for more litigation.

Samsung and Apple have been feuding over smartphone patents since 2011. Apple had sued Samsung alleging that the South Korean smartphone company infringed upon iPhone’s patents, designs, and trademark appearances. Samsung was then ordered to pay $930 million in damages to Apple in 2012, but the amount was reduced to $548 million when the US Court of Appeals reversed the trademark liability.

The appeals court, however, upheld Samsung’s infringement of Apple’s design and UI related patents. Samsung then asked the Supreme Court to review the design patent portion of the decision saying that the damages awarded to Apple were excessive. The justices then agreed to review whether the damages should consider the total profits from a product if the patent applies to only one component.

The Justice Department said yesterday in its amicus brief that it was unclear whether Samsung had produced enough evidence to support its argument that the phone components should matter when calculating damages, not the entire product. The Supreme Court should now send the case back to the trial court to determine whether a new trial is warranted.
