Samsung will source Galaxy S8 batteries from the same supplier it dumped after Galaxy Note 7 fires

A significant chunk of Samsung Electronics’ battery requirements are met by Samsung SDI – the conglomerate’s battery division – so it was not surprising to see that SDI the major supplier for Galaxy Note 7 batteries. When the handset started catching fire soon after it was released, a hurried investigation concluded that there was a defect in the batteries supplied by Samsung SDI. Samsung Electronics stopped sourcing batteries from its sister company for the Galaxy Note 7 and switched all orders to China’s ATL which was the secondary supplier for the handset and previously accounted for only a small percentage of batteries for the Galaxy Note 7.

The problem should have ended there but it didn’t. Replacement Galaxy Note 7 units with batteries from ATL also started catching fire in the same manner which could only mean one thing. The problem went far beyond Samsung SDI’s batteries so even though industry watchers say that SDI was becoming complacent because it was too reliant on business from sister companies, it’s wasn’t entirely at fault for the Galaxy Note 7 crisis.

According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung is apparently convinced that Samsung SDI’s batteries were not the key cause of Galaxy Note 7 fires. It has reportedly renewed its contract with the battery division to source batteries for high-end smartphones, including the Galaxy S8. Samsung is also expected to further diversify the supply chain for the Galaxy S8′s battery. It was reported about three months ago that it may also source batteries for its next flagship from LG Chem, the battery division of rival conglomerate LG.

Samsung is believed to have concluded its investigation into the Galaxy Note 7 fires and is expected to make the results public later this month. The company has reiterated to employees recently that there should be no compromise on product quality while Samsung SDI is going to be particularly working hard to improve its safety processes.

Samsung showcases advancement in home entertainment technology with new QLED TV series

Samsung applied for QLED TV trademarks last year which suggested that the company would soon launch new TVs that will use QLED technology. That’s precisely what it has done today. Samsung has showcased its advancement in home entertainment technology by unveiling the new QLED TV series. The new QLED TV series – Q9, Q8, and Q7 – was showcased at Samsung’s 2017 product unveiling at the Keep Memory Alive Event Center in Las Vegas ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show 2017.

“With the advent of QLED TV, we provide the most true-to-life picture on screen. We have been successful in solving for past inconsistencies in the viewing experience and consumer pain points while redefining the fundamental value of TV,” said HyunSuk Kim, President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s new QLED TV series promises dramatically improved color performance as its able to display DCI-P3 color space accurately. The company says that this series is also the first in the world that’s capable of reproducing 100 percent color volume. What this means is that the TVs can express all colors regardless of the level of brightness with the subtlest of differences being visible at QLED’s peak luminance between 1,500 and 2,000 nits.

The company has also addressed some TV viewer pain points with its new lineup such as cable clutter and thick wall mounts. It says that with the 2017 lineup, the focus is where it should be, the content that’s being displayed on the screen. This is made possible courtesy of a single transparent “Invisible Connection” cable through which all peripheral devices can be gathered and connected to the TV. A “No-gap wall-mount” is also included which makes it easy to fix the TV flush to the wall.

Samsung’s Smart TV platform has also been improved for the new series. The company’s new Smart View app is an extension of the Smart Hub interface to the smartphone. The app provides a comprehensive overview of all available content and can even push notifications about show times and availability. The company has also launched two Smart TV services including Sports and Music which it has previously detailed.

Samsung will confirm pricing and availability information for the new QLED TV series at a later date.

Galaxy S8′s processor is 20% faster than its predecessor

Qualcomm confirmed two months ago that its new Snapdragon 835 mobile chipset will be manufactured on Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process technology. This is going to be the processor that Samsung uses most likely for the US version of the Galaxy S8. Qualcomm simply announced the Snapdragon 835 late last year and today it has finally revealed some details about this new processor.

As per the details confirmed by Qualcomm, we now know that the Galaxy S8 processor is going to be 20 percent faster and 25 percent more efficient than its predecessor the Snapdragon 820 which powered flagships like the Galaxy S7.

The Snapdragon 835 is based on an octa-core setup instead of the quad-core setup that Qualcomm used for the Snapdragon 820. The new processor doesn’t have Qualcomm’s full custom Kryo cores like its predecessor, they are actually based closely on ARM reference cores but Qualcomm hasn’t detailed which reference cores its new processor uses. It’s only saying that the Snapdragon 835′s “semi-custom” Kryo 280 design makes the processor a lot different than a simple copy/paste ARM design.

The CPU has four performance cores running at up to 2.45GHz and four efficiency cores running up to 1.9GHz. The new Adreno 540 graphics processor promises 25 percent improved performance and HDR support. Qualcomm’s new processor also features its Snapdragon X16 LTE modem with support for Cat. 16 LTE and Cat. 13 LTE upload speeds. There’s support for 2×2 aac MU-MIMO and 802.11ad multi-gigabit Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, support for 4K Ultra HD video capture and Quick Charge 4, which the company says provides five hours of use from just five minutes of charging. The Snapdragon 835 is fully compatible with USB Type-C.

The Galaxy S8 is most likely going to be the first flagship consumer device to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835. Even though absolute performance gains are nothing to write home about, the improved power efficiency will certainly be appreciated, as will all of the other advancements that Qualcomm has made.

This Galaxy Note competitor in 2017 is one company’s high tech comeback

The Galaxy Note 7 arrival and quick recall has had some doubting Samsung’s Galaxy Note brand and Samsung in general. Critics have said that the Galaxy Note brand was “so damaged beyond repair” that there’s no way Samsung could ever resurrect and revive it. And yet, the results show that the Note faithful are as faithful as ever to Samsung (particularly in the United States) and can’t wait for the Galaxy Note 8. I do value what analysts say, but sometimes, I think their predictions tell more about their own views than those of faithful customers.

Well, it may be hard to believe, but the Galaxy Note brand is anything but dead. One company in particular is expecting a high tech comeback in 2017 with a Galaxy Note competitor of its own. The company in question? The company known formally as “High Tech Computer,” or HTC.

HTC has been teasing us with a concept phone called the “HTC Ocean” that shows a new Sense Touch UI with touch controls on the side edge of the smartphone, which should ring a bell for diehard Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy Note 7 fans (yes, Note 7 fever is still alive). Samsung started its edge controls with the Galaxy Note Edge, then the Galaxy S6 edge, and this year, the Galaxy S7 edge and the now-deceased Galaxy Note 7. Samsung’s take on edge controls consists of edge panels that can be downloaded from the Galaxy Apps Store that allow you to do everything from access your selfie camera, compose an email to a specific contact, record a voice memo, access your calendar dates, and even access your SamMobile news feed.

There are three phones that will bear the HTC Ocean codename (if this remains a codename or becomes the device moniker remains to be seen): the Ocean Smart, Ocean Master, and Ocean Note. These codenames have been leaked by HTC 10 leakster LlabTooFeR (he also confirmed that the HTC 10 codename was “Perfume”).

The Ocean Smart is said to be a mid-range device, while the Ocean Master is aptly named because it will be the high-end of those two devices. Yes, I know – you’ve seen the name of the third device, the Ocean Note – and Galaxy Note fans are wondering about this. If the rumors are right, the Ocean Note will be HTC’s third device to be announced next year and will have an integrated stylus along with other specs such as a 5.5-inch, Quad HD display (2,560 x 1,440p), Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, Adreno 540 GPU, 8GB of RAM (this isn’t a typo), 256GB of internal storage, 8MP front camera, 12MP back camera, 3,700mAh battery, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0, and Android Nougat. To the disappointment of many, it won’t come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, so that trend is here to stay.

The HTC Ocean Note (or the stylus-enabled HTC 11, as some presume it to be), is said to look identical to the HTC 10 with the exception of an added stylus. A recent leak shows that a protective case and back cover for the device have an added slot that mimics the same design as a Galaxy Note smartphone. And the words “HTC Ocean Note” are on the page cleanly, with little question as to the codename.

There are a lot of rumors about this Galaxy Note competitor that are up in the air at this point. The new Sense Touch controls are up in the air (it’s been said that the video was just a concept video, nothing real), and this device, as has been the case with other devices, could possibly never make it to market.

What we do know is that, should HTC choose to release this device, it will reaffirm what Galaxy Note users already know: that is, Samsung’s Galaxy Note is the finest smartphone on the market, and the stylus-enabled smartphone is the gold standard for all others to emulate. Samsung’s Galaxy Note, though, is not just a smartphone with a stylus. Samsung has integrated the S Pen by bringing certain features to the Note that make the S Pen more than just a writing utensil.

The now-deceased Galaxy Note 7 added features such as Glance, Magnify, and Translate that let you use the S Pen for more than just writing, as well as resolution scaling in its newly-revamped Medium Power Saving Mode along with other subtle improvements.

The Galaxy Note 4 integrated Samsung’s Smart Select (initially called S Pen As Mouse) that lets you copy words and images together to share with those you know or gather together for your own personal research. The Galaxy Note 5 brought Screen Off Memo that lets you write when the screen is off (the name is as popular as the feature itself now).

The Note 7, in addition to the above features, also made it easy to compose and share GIFs. This doesn’t even take into account the water-resistant nature of the Note 7 and its S Pen. HTC will be expected to bring more than just a stylus to its smartphone lineup if it wants the Ocean Note to end up in the same sentence as Samsung’s Galaxy Note in tech discussions.

Whether HTC can follow in Samsung’s footsteps respectably is a waiting game. Either way, we may know something as early as CES 2017, January 12th or by the end of Q1.

Samsung’s latest advert highlights the Galaxy A (2017)’s ‘Galaxy DNA’

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy A (2017) series yesterday. The series has considerably been improved over the past few years as features have gradually trickled down from Samsung’s high-end Galaxy handsets to this affordable lineup. It’s a fact that Samsung is highlighting in its first official TV advert for the Galaxy A (2017).

The advert points out that the Galaxy A (2017) features a 16-megapixel front and rear camera – at least the A5 (2017) and A7 (2017) do – while all three models in this series are IP68 water and dust resistant. Despite having a sleek build complete with metal and glass, the Galaxy A (2017) also features microSD card support for expandable storage. The new series offers great options for those who don’t want to spend too much money on a flagship smartphone but would like to have some premium features at an affordable price.

The new Galaxy A lineup is going to be available for purchase in Europe early next month with the Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) being priced at 329 euro and 429 euro respectively. The handsets can already be pre-ordered in the UK.

PSA: The Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) ship with Secure Folder on board

Samsung’s latest smartphones — the Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) — all ship with Secure Folder on board. For those unaware, the feature, which debuted on the Galaxy Note 7, allows users to hide personal files, including documents, images and videos, behind an encrypted firewall to prevent prying eyes from gaining access to their sensitive information.

It would certainly appear that the South Korean company is gradually making all of the exclusive software functions that launched on the Galaxy Note 7 default on its new devices. It previously bundled Secure Folder on the Galaxy J7 Prime out of the box and is reportedly considering making it a downloadable feature on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge with the upcoming Android 7.0 Nougat update.

Galaxy Note 5 getting December security update in India

The Galaxy Note 5 is now getting a minor firmware update in India. As for the onboard features, the changelog doesn’t seem to show much, so it should be a general performance patch. We expect the update to carry a handful of bug fixes as well.

The device was previously running the Android security patch from October, which has now been updated to December 1. This is not the latest version by any means, but will still get the job done. Going by the recent update patterns, it seems like Samsung is following a quarterly update cycle for the Galaxy Note 5. The update is only 295MB in size, but it would probably be safer to download it over a WiFi connection to avoid carrier overages.

The update should reach your device automatically, but if it doesn’t, make sure you head over to Settings » About Device to download it manually.

Galaxy X to arrive in Q3-Q4 2017

We said 8 months ago that Samsung intends to launch five Galaxy flagships in 2017, with a foldable, 4K-resolution Galaxy X among them. Well, we have seen a prototype of the next big thing but have heard nothing about an announcement or launch date. Samsung has been teasing foldable smartphones on the market for some time (eight years since it showcased its first flexible display), but without an announcement or arrival date, a concept remains just a concept. Samsung is finally ready to bring the Galaxy X to the spotlight, with word from China that the Galaxy X will launch in Q3 or Q4 2017. This matches Korea’s own statement on the matter from weeks ago.

Outside of the resolution of this flagship, we know little else about the Galaxy X except that it will be a smartphone with a foldable display that will also have scrolling capabilities (if the end-of-2016 patents tell anything) as well as a touch area on not only app icons on the display but also the edge of the foldable smartphone. Additionally, the Galaxy X will utilize various biometric forms including fingers, face, and palm, among others. We’re sure there’ll be more details to surface as we get closer to the launch date. What this tells us is that Samsung is more content with finalizing and releasing flagships than merely creating concepts. Samsung’s “Galaxy” is headed for a new frontier.

You can now pre-order the Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) in the UK

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled three new handsets as part of its Galaxy A series — the Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) — and now residents in the UK can pre-order the first two devices through independent retailer MobileFun. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t look like the latter will be making its way to Europe.

Pricing starts at £299 for the 16GB variant of the Galaxy A3 (2017) and tops out at £399 for the 32GB model of the Galaxy A5 (2017), which lines up perfectly with the pricing the South Korean company revealed in the announcement post it shared on its press portal.

MobileFun is also selling a whole host of different accessories for the Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017), including the official S View covers. Although, they aren’t expected to be in stock for the next 2-3 weeks (roughly around the same time the handsets will start shipping).

Samsung files patent for innovative dual-lens camera configuration

It’s been revealed that Samsung has filed a patent in South Korea for a dual-lens camera configuration that takes advantage of a telephoto and wide angle lens. As outlined in the annotated diagrams found alongside the filing documentation, the former is capable of tracking any object that’s in the field of view of the latter to capture clear photographs in which the subject and background are both in focus.

The way it works is relatively simple, but extremely effective. The wide-angle lens scans for anything it deems to be an object. If it recognizes something that stands out from the background — like a car, person or plane–  it triggers the telephoto lens, which dubs the item as a subject and tracks it in real-time; enabling users to adjust their zoom and shooting settings accordingly without losing focus.

samsung-dual-lens-camera-patent-wide-angle-telephoto-1

Many believe that the dual-lens technology Samsung has filed a patent for will launch alongside a dedicated Portrait shooting mode — similar to the one Apple debuted on the iPhone 7 Plus — which will allow users to capture images with an artistic depth effect, whereby the subject is in focus and the background is subtly blurred.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear when Samsung will implement the hardware on one of its handsets. Recent speculation suggests that it’ll be on board the much-anticipated Galaxy S8. However, rumors are now being bandied around claiming that it’ll be reserved for a high-end device dedicated to photography. Only time will tell. We’re just happy to hear it’s on the way.

Galaxy Note 8 specs rumored to include 4K display and Bixby AI assistant

Last week, we exclusively broke the story about Samsung using the ‘Bixby’ voice assistant with the Galaxy S8 as the default voice assistant for all native apps. A newer report emerging out of South Korea is mentioning that this feature will also make its way to the Galaxy Note 8.

The phone is also expected to be packing a UHD or 4K resolution display which would, at least in theory, provide users with an enhanced virtual reality experience.

This report mentions that Samsung will release the flagship only after announcing the results of its investigation into the Galaxy Note 7 fires. Samsung is expected to publicly announce the results of its investigation later this month. An unnamed Samsung official has been cited as the source for this report, so its authenticity cannot be confirmed as of yet.

It seems like Samsung is prepping to up the game significantly with the next Note flagship, which is a must considering the flak the company has received following the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

Samsung Electronics Q4 2016 earnings expected to beat forecast

Despite the fact that the financial impact of the Galaxy Note 7′s failure will be evident in Samsung Electronics Q4 earnings, analysts are of the view that the Samsung Group’s crown jewel is going to report earnings that beat market forecast for the final quarter of 2016.

Data compiled by industry tracker FnGuide shows that the market predicts Samsung Electronics to post operating income of 7.91 trillion won ($6.66 billion) for the quarter ending December 2016. It would be a healthy increase over the 5.2 trillion won in operating income that the company posted in the previous quarter. Some securities firms in South Korea are more bullish and have raised their earnings outlook to over 8 trillion won.

One firm in particular, IBK Securities Co., predicts that Samsung’s Q4 2016 operating income will cross 8.7 trillion won and will thus be a 68 percent quarter-over-quarter improvement. While the mobile division has cost the company a lot of money due to the Galaxy Note 7′s failure, once again, the chip business division is expected to be the cash cow. The recovering demand for memory chips is giving analysts hope that Samsung Electronics will beat its earnings forecast for Q4 2016. Some expect the company to bring in 4 trillion won in operating profit from its chip division alone.

Samsung will announce its Q4 2016 earnings guidance later this week.

Samsung SDI to focus on safety in the New Year

It was initially believed that the batteries supplied by Samsung SDI – the conglomerate’s battery division- were causing the Galaxy Note 7 to catch fire. Samsung switched over to another supplier for the phablet and while that should have put an end to the fires, it was only a matter of time before replacement Galaxy Note 7 units started catching fire as well. Nevertheless, reports suggested that Samsung SDI had grown complacent because it was receiving the bulk of its business from sister company Samsung Electronics and that wasn’t something that was going to change.

Samsung SDI’s reputation has suffered an impact because of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco so it makes sense for the company’s CEO Cho Nam-seong to reiterate during his New Year’s talk to employees that the company should establish a corporate culture “that puts safety first.” This realization comes amid growing demand for batteries that power complex mobile devices and electric cars.

The company is planning to improve product safety by innovating its design and manufacturing methods, overhauling its system and organization and expanding investment in safety. “As to mid- to large-sized batteries, we will develop high-capacity products, and in terms of small batteries, we will improve polymer technologies and take the leadership in cylindrical batteries,” the CEO added.

He’s not the only Samsung executive to remind employees that safety should be the utmost priority. Samsung Electronics CEO also reiterated during his New Year’s talk that there should be no compromise on product quality.
