Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) spotted at the FCC

Samsung’s been working on a 2017 edition of the Galaxy J5 Prime, specs for which were revealed through the phone’s listing on a benchmark website. It seems the launch of the phone is imminent, as it has now been spotted at the FCC. The FCC listing is a recent one, dated November 24, so we can expect an official unveil of the device before the end of 2017.

Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) spotted at the FCC

The Galaxy J5 Prime was launched in September last year in markets like India and South Africa, so we’re already past the one year mark at which one would expect a sequel. The Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) isn’t a big upgrade if we look at the leaked specs, with only the software and front camera getting upgrades (from Android 6.0.1 to 7.1.1 and from a 5-megapixel sensor to an 8 MP unit). The display size is listed as being smaller than the original J5 Prime’s, but we can expect it to be a 5-inch unit on the 2017 edition as well.

The rest of the specs look like they will remain the same, including a 13-megapixel rear camera, quad-core Exynos 7570 chipset with 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The battery size isn’t mentioned, but Samsung will hopefully provide an upgrade on that front given the complaints about battery life on the original Galaxy J5 Prime.

As far as a release date is concerned, there’s no telling when Samsung will make things official. We’re not even sure the phone will be called the Galaxy J5 Prime (2017), although we’re not disputing it either considering how the company loves adding the current year to the names of newer versions of existing devices.

Samsung develops (and patents) ‘graphene ball’ to speed up charging

The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has successfully synthesized a now-patented “graphene ball” that can be used to make lithium-ion batteries last 45 percent longer and charge around five-times faster, it has been revealed.

Lithium-ion batteries—like one bundled on the Galaxy Note 8—take an hour to charge, but that will be reduced to around 12 minutes with the new graphene ball technology, announced Samsung on Monday, November 27.

The SAIT has been behind a number of commercialized technological breakthroughs, including the development of the cadmium-free Quantum Dot materials that are being used in Samsung’s high-end—and flagship—QLED TVs.

Li-ion was first introduced in 1991

Lithium-ion batteries were first introduced back in 1991 and have since been the standard for powering consumer-grade electronic devices; many, however, believe that the technology has now expired and have started looking for alternatives.

The graphene ball approach is just one of the many different advanced power methods being explored at the moment. There’s no guarantee it will ever see the light of day, though.

Samsung to supply LTE-enabled smartphones for UK emergency network

Samsung has secured a contract with the United Kingdom’s Home Office to supply LTE-enabled smartphones and related accessories for the emergency services network, which includes the ambulance, fire and police departments.

The region’s response bodies currently use an airwave system to communicate that’s limited to voice radio; however, Samsung’s network will provide a slew of additional cellular-based capabilities, including location services.

“Next-generation public safety communications is an important area of focus for Samsung,” said Hahn Suk-Jea, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Global Mobile Business-to-Business Team on Sunday, November 26.

“We hope our partnership with ESN and UK emergency services organizations will bring our technology to the entire public safety community on the front line, supporting the great work they do every day,” Suk-Jea added.

Galaxy S8 Active

It’s unclear what specific smartphones the Home Office has ordered, but the Galaxy S8 Active would seem the most logical choice—if the firm can import it into the United Kingdom, that is—because it’s both durable and powerful.

Samsung’s latest design patents probably won’t see the light of day

Samsung has been granted a number of new design patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), reports Patently Mobile—and they include everything from a foldable smartphone to a 360-degree speaker.

It’s worth noting, however, that nothing outlined in these (minimalistic) design patents is set in stone. They merely provide an insight into what the firm could be working on behind the scenes, so don’t get your hopes up.
