Gear S2 released in Australia

When the Gear S2 was formally announced Samsung confirmed that it would start shipping its new smartwatch in various markets across the globe come October. Earlier this month we saw the company release the Gear S2 in a handful of markets and since then it has gradually made this device available in more markets. Today it’s Australia’s turn, the Gear S2 has been released in Australia and it’s available for purchase through stores in Sydney, Melbourne as well as through online retailers. More local retailers will have the smartwatch in stock by the end of this month.

The Gear S2 is priced at AU$499 whereas the Gear S2 Classic costs AU$599. Both models run Tizen and feature a rotating bezel for a rather unique navigation experience, they offer a wide variety of features and thousands of applications for users to choose from. The Gear S2 is compatible with any Android smartphone running Android KitKat or higher, though in order to use features like Samsung Pay the smartwatch has to be paired with a Galaxy smartphone.

Samsung’s market share dips below 25 percent in Q3 2015

Samsung might have launched four critically acclaimed smartphones this year (the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ and the Note 5), but it seems they weren’t enough for the company’s global market share. According to TrendForce, the Korean giant’s year-on-year shipment growth has spiraled downwards for the first time since it rose to the top all those years ago.

Samsung’s market share declined in the third quarter of 2015 over the last one, with a share of 24.6 percent. TrendForce had expected the Galaxy S6 would sell up to 50 million units by the end of this year, but it has now lowered that projection to 40 million units, no doubt because the Note 5 and S6 edge+ came out a little too early to spoil the original S6 lineup’s party. Over in Cupertino, the iPhone’s share of the market declined as well, though Apple is expected to gain back the lost market share with the launch of the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus.

The only manufacturers to see increased shipments in the third quarter were Huawei and Lenovo. Huawei is the first Chinese smartphone manufacturer to reach 100 million smartphone shipments in the country’s history, which isn’t surprising considering the rapid rise the company has seen in the last year or so. Samsung is no doubt worried considering China is one of the most important smartphone markets right now, and it will be facing severe competition from both Apple and Huawei going forward.

Samsung doesn’t have to worry too much, however, as its entry-level devices have started regaining the popularity they had in the company’s heyday. If it can keep the momentum and deliver better devices at lower prices in the future, we should see its market share start going back in a positive direction, or at least maintain its lead over the others.

Fast charge enabled battery pack is the focus in new Galaxy Note 5 ad

Samsung has released a new ad for the Galaxy Note 5 on YouTube, it’s more for people who already own the company’s flagship smartphone as opposed to those who might be considering putting money down for one. It has already released many ads that highlight various features of the Galaxy Note 5 and even take jabs at the iPhone for not being up to its level.

The new ad is about teaching owners of the Galaxy Note 5 how they can charge their device on the go without having to constantly look for a power outlet. The Galaxy Note 5 has a respectable battery capacity and couple that with fast charging that works with both wired and wireless charging, juicing up the device becomes relatively painless. Through this ad though Samsung reminds users that they can also charge their Galaxy Note 5 using a fast charged enabled 5200mAh Samsung Battery Pack which retails for $69.99. The battery pack is lightweight and has a design not that different from the handset, and Samsung promises that it can charge the Galaxy Note 5 from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Samsung launches the Tizen-powered Samsung Z3 in India

The Samsung Z1, the first Tizen smartphone for consumers, was a runaway success thanks to a low price and the Korean giant’s brand value. Today, Samsung has launched the oft-rumored Z3, the second phone to be powered by the company’s home grown mobile operating system. Like the Z1, the Z3 is making its debut in India, where Samsung took the stage at a dedicated event to take the wraps off the device.

The Z3 is another low-cost Tizen phone, but its hardware is a considerable upgrade over the Z1. The improved design is noticeable right off the bat. The phone looks similar to the Z1 from the front, but the back now features a curve on both edges like the one we saw on the Galaxy Note 5. This should help in better handling, while also giving the phone a more premium look.

The Z3 comes with a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, and there’s a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM under the hood. The back has an 8-megapixel camera, the front camera is a 5-megapixel unit, and there’s 8GB of internal storage expandable by a microSD slot (up to 128GB). The phone has a 2,600 mAh battery and features Samsung’s Ultra Power Saving Mode, which disables all but the most basic functions to increase battery life when you really need it.

The Z3 also comes with the Ultra Data Saving Mode feature that was introduced with the Galaxy J2. Developed at Samsung’s Indian R&D center, Ultra Data Saving Mode lets users save on data costs by compressing all incoming and outgoing internet traffic. The phone runs Tizen 2.3; that’s not the latest version of the OS, but the Z3 should be getting an upgrade to Tizen 2.4 in the near future. As the Z3 is targeted at the Indian market, it comes pre-loaded with Samsung’s My Galaxy and Mix Radio apps for free region-specific content.

The Z3 is priced at Rs. 8,490 and will go on sale on Indian retailer Snapdeal sometime this month in gold, black and silver color options. For the hardware on offer, the pricing is pretty impressive for a Samsung device, though it’s disappointing to see the company isn’t giving 4G LTE support. It remains to be seen if the Z3 will see the same success as its predecessor, and there’s also the question of whether the Tizen ecosystem will grow fast enough for it to be a good alternative to the established players.

Our sources had told us that the Z3 will be launching in Europe, though Samsung didn’t say anything in that regard. A European launch will probably depend on how well the phone does in India and other emerging markets, and we will be doing a full review in the coming weeks to find out if the device is a good purchase.

What do you think about the Samsung Z3?
