Reserve Galaxy Note 20 in the US today and get $50 off on Galaxy Watch 3

Samsung is yet to officially introduce the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it looks like it has opened reservations for the devices in the US. If you reserve one of the upcoming smartphones from the company and pre-order them, you can get a $50 gift. The reservation period ends on 4 August, 2020, and the offer could also be valid on reserving the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

You can reserve the next Galaxy smartphone by entering your details (name, email, and ZIP code) and the carrier of your choice. Samsung is offering five carrier choices: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. You can also reserve an unlocked variant of the smartphone. You don’t need to pay anything right now to reserve the device, so we recommend you to make the reservation even if you haven’t decided to go through the purchase.

The $50 gift that you receive for reserving your next Galaxy smartphone will be eligible on purchases made via installment plans, 2-year contract plans, lease, and outright purchases. The $50 credit can be used to purchase accessories, smartwatches, and tablets from Samsung’s online store or the Shop Samsung app. You can also trade in your old smartphone to get additional discount and get enrolled in the Buyback Program.

While Samsung doesn’t mention the Galaxy Watch 3 on its website, it is most likely that you can use the $50 store credit while purchasing the upcoming smartwatch. It can also be used to buy all existing and upcoming accessories, smartwatches, and tablets. The gift voucher expires on Black Friday. The South Korean firm is offering free and safe contact-less delivery of its products to your doorstep.

Samsung might soon be pushing One UI 2.5 onto the Galaxy S20 series

Samsung might be treating the Galaxy S20 series a bit differently in terms of One UI updates compared to last year. As many of you recall, the Galaxy S10 lineup was released running One UI 1.1 out of the box, but was never updated to One UI 1.5. Instead, the series got a few Galaxy Note 10 features lifted from One UI 1.5, and it then made the jump directly to One UI 2.0.

With that in mind, it’s easy to expect the Galaxy S20 series to be skipping One UI 2.5 and jump directly to One UI 3.0 along with Android 11 (which, apparently, is also being tested at the same time). However, according to a couple of twitter posts by @UniverseIce and @MaxWeinbach, this might not be the case, and the Galaxy S20 series could still be be updated to One UI 2.5 some time after the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 lineup and before One UI 3.0 arrives.

One UI 2.5 is expected to further improve upon existing One UI 2.1 elements. The update will also mark the release of brand new features, one of which could be support for Google’s UI navigation gestures for third-party launchers. This addition was mentioned by moderators on the official community forums in South Korea as early as four months ago. There’s not much else known about One UI 2.5, but there’s a chance that the update will also improve features such as Pro mode for Video.

Galaxy Note 20 Gorilla Glass screen could be twice as scratch resistant

Glass manufacturing company Corning is ready to launch a new generation of Gorilla Glass, and the Galaxy Note 20 series – or at least the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra –  is expected to be the world’s first smartphone to adopt this new solution. So what can we expect from Gorilla Glass 7?

To begin with, the next-gen screen protection is seemingly set to be sold under a different name. The sequel to Gorilla Glass 6 appears to be called Gorilla Glass Victus instead of Gorilla Glass 7, although the latter could still be released in parallel as an alternative solution to Victus. More importantly, the company revealed to Android Authority that Gorilla Glass Victus delivers twice the scratch resistance and nearly twice the drop resistance of Gorilla Glass 6.

This is an incredible milestone for Corning because every new generation of Gorilla Glass has focused on improving either scratch or drop resistance, but never both at the same time. In fact, scratch resistance hasn’t really been improved since Gorilla Glass 3, with Corning focusing more on improving the glass’ ability to survive impacts from accidental drops.

Gorilla Glass Victus changes all that and promises to double the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass 6, all the while being capable of withstanding drops from 2 meters. In contrast, Gorilla Glass 6 is rated for drops from a height of up to 1.6m.

Samsung may have chosen durability or thinness for the Note 20 series

It’s interesting to note that even if the Galaxy Note 20 will take advantage of Gorilla Glass Victus, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the upcoming flagship’s screen will be twice as scratch resistant and nearly two times as resilient to accidental drops as the previous generation. If this sounds like a contradiction, let us explain.

Corning has been testing its glass at a consistent thickness throughout the years, meaning that the company has achieved this new level of resistance on a sheet of Gorilla Glass Victus that measures exactly the same as Gorilla Glass 6. This is nothing out of the ordinary, of course, but it does mean that Samsung could adopt a thinner layer of Gorilla Glass Victus that would have the same structural rigidity as Gorilla Glass 6. In other words, Samsung may have chosen to make the Galaxy Note 20 more resilient, or it may have maintained the same level of durability as before in favor of a thinner profile.

Production costs have remained the same

Another great characteristic of Gorilla Glass Victus is that it doesn’t cost more or less than Gorilla Glass 6 to be produced. As far as Samsung is concerned, the company can take advantage of the next-gen glass without increasing production costs, and indeed, we’ve already heard rumors that the Galaxy Note 20 lineup will be priced roughly the same as last year’s S Pen flagship.

For now, it remains unclear whether Gorilla Glass Victus will be available on both the Galaxy Note 20 models or if the new glass solution will be reserved exclusively for the higher-end model. Likewise, time will tell whether Samsung chose higher resilience or thinnes for its next-gen Galaxy Note series. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.

The Galaxy Note 20 has turned out to be its own ‘Lite’ variant

Samsung came out with the “Lite” variants of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 last year. The company watered down its high-end devices to provide a premium experience to customers who didn’t want to pay flagship-level prices.

We already know that the company is planning such a variant for the Galaxy S20 which may be launched as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition. Why have we heard nothing about a Galaxy Note 20 Lite or Fan Edition? That’s because the Galaxy Note 20 is basically its own Lite variant.

Would a Galaxy Note 20 Lite even make sense now?

The major Galaxy Note 20 leak yesterday revealed that there will be significant differences between it and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. While they will share the same chipset, these devices won’t be nearly as similar as the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ were.

Take the display, for example. The Galaxy Note 20 features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. It won’t support the 120Hz dynamic refresh rate we expect on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. That’s surprising, given that all three models in the Galaxy S20 series feature 120Hz refresh rate. This FHD+ resolution display will be a flat panel with a very noticeable chin, not something you’d expect to see on a flagship phone in 2020.

Unlike the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Note 20 is only going to have 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. There won’t be a microSD card slot so external expansion is not going to be possible. Even the stylus may not be as capable. The leak reveals that the Galaxy Note 20’s S Pen will have a 26ms latency while the Ultra’s S Pen will have an ultra-low latency of just 9ms.

There’s going to be a huge difference in the camera setups of these devices as well with the Galaxy Note 20 missing out on the 108-megapixel f/1.8 sensor. Perhaps the most alarming indication of this not being a fully premium device is the alleged plastic back even though it’s going to have a metal frame. That’s what the leak claims, anyway, and it is indeed difficult to imagine a flagship phone in 2020 without a metal and glass build.

It’s evident that there needs to be a substantial price difference between the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. That’s because a lot more compromises have been made this time around than we’ve ever seen before on these multi-model flagships from Samsung. A recent report claims that there will at least be a $200 price difference between the two models.

Samsung will maintain some feature parity across both handsets. They will both enable users to access DeX wirelessly, access almost 90 console-level games through Xbox Game Pass via Project xCloud in addition to having support for 5G and Wi-Fi 6. They’re also going to run Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.5.

The company would need to cut a lot more from this device if it intends to launch a Galaxy Note 20 Lite. There won’t be enough to shave off, to begin with, at least when compared to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. If it does, the resulting device will essentially be a mid-range handset which would seem out of place in Samsung’s 2020 lineup. The S Pen would still remain the obvious draw for customers but the Lite variant will be cheaper and it might end up cannibalizing the Galaxy Note 20’s sales.

It already has a very capable mid-ranger in the Galaxy A71 and Samsung has also released a 5G-equipped variant of that device. Samsung may have made all of these calculations are realized that a Galaxy Note 20 Lite might not fit the bill this year. So perhaps the decision was then made to have a much wider split between the capabilities of the two Galaxy Note 20 models.

Ultimately, it all comes down to pricing. For many, the sweet spot for the Galaxy Note 20 is going to between the $949 Galaxy Note 10 and ~$700 Galaxy Note 10 Lite. Could Samsung really consider a sub-$900 price for its newest flagship? That we’ll only come to know once the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are unveiled on August 5.

First 1,000 Galaxy Note 20 buyers in Thailand get a personalized S Pen

The Galaxy Note 20 series is a couple of weeks away from hitting the shelves and Samsung has just revealed its first pre-order incentive. Rather, Galaxy Note 20 pre-bookings are now live in Thailand and prospective customers have an opportunity to receive a special gift along with their new flagship: an engraved S Pen.

Galaxy Note 20 pre-bookings will be open until August 3. Customers who reserve one of the upcoming flagship models will receive a code via email. This code can be used upon ordering the Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra from August 6 to August 9, and the first 1,000 customers to use the code will receive a personalized S Pen with their names engraved on it.

Samsung Thailand reveals that customers won’t be able to pick a color for the custom S Pen. However, the company will notify them via email with details about the S Pen flavor they’ve been assigned before the actual sales commence. The company also revealed that the regular Galaxy Note 20 S Pen without this personal touch is valued at 1,190 baht ($37) when purchased separately. It’s not entirely clear if the custom S Pen will be given away in addition to the S Pen included in the Galaxy Note 20 retail package or if they’re one and the same.

We’re eager to see what other incentives Samsung will prepare for Galaxy Note 20 buyers in other markets or if this offer for an engraved S Pen will be available outside of Thailand. Readers who want to participate in the promotion in Thailand can visit this page for registration.

Samsung rumored to have set 2019 prices for the Galaxy Note 20 series

The Galaxy Note 20 series will be priced almost exactly the same as the Galaxy Note 10 lineup when it debuted last year, according to a recent rumor by Yonhap citing industry sources. Specifically, the base Galaxy Note 20 model will presumably hit the shelves in South Korea for 1.199 million won ($998), whereas the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will cost 1.452 million won ($1,209). The source doesn’t specify if the the $1,209 price tag corresponds to the 256GB or 512GB model.

In contrast, the Galaxy Note 10 was released in South Korea last year for the price equivalent of around $992. The Galaxy Note 10+ with 256GB of storage was sold for around $1,160, while the 512GB model with 5G connectivity costed roughly $1,240. This should mean that Galaxy Note 20 prices will reflect the Galaxy Note 10 prices outside of South Korea as well.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offers more meaningful upgrades

The Galaxy Note 20 series has leaked in all its glory this week and we have a fairly accurate image of what the duo has in store for customers. Simply put, the Galaxy Note 20 offers a newer chipset, a flat display which should be considered a plus for an S Pen device, and an upgraded rear-facing camera setup.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the star of the show, having been gifted a new AMOLED display capable of a 120Hz refresh rate, a periscope telephoto lens able to achieve 50x hybrid zoom, as well as a 108MP wide camera. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is also said to be the world’s first smartphone to adopt Gorilla Glass 7 screen protection, but as yet it’s unclear whether this feature will be present on the base model.

Evidently, prices have not been set in stone, at least not officially. These rumors may or may not be accurate but we’re inclined to believe that they are. We’ll find out soon enough at Galaxy Unpacked 2020. Stay tuned.

A step backwards: Regular Galaxy Tab S7 rumored to feature LCD display

The closer we’re getting to August 5th, the less appealing does Samsung’s next generation of premium Android tablets sound. Even that “premium” label may best be provisionally reserved for the 12.4-inch Galaxy Tab S7+, as its regular 11-inch counterpart is shaping up to be a rather stripped-down alternative to the more expensive model.

A newly surfaced rumor illustrates how barebones of an experience we’re actually talking about here, suggesting an LCD panel will be used for the Galaxy Tab S7. Meaning Samsung is essentially taking a full decade’s worth of a backwards step as far as display tech is concerned.

Galaxy Tab S7+ starting to look like the only “flagship” model on offer

As a reminder, SamMobile exclusively reported that the Galaxy Tab S7 will lack an in-display fingerprint reader. However, it would be frivolous to suggest such an omission would warrant a return to LCDs. The fact that this return is supposedly happening in 2020, initiated by a display industry leader who itself gave up on LCDs just several months back, makes this new suggestion all the more confusing. 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate are both expected to be supported, however.

The same report reiterates previously surfaced suggestions about the Snapdragon 865 being used over the Snapdragon 865 Plus. Likewise, the base configuration is said to offer 128GB of storage space with microSD card support, with the same presumably holding true for the Galaxy Tab S7+. The smaller slate will reportedly measure in at 165.3 x 253.8 x 6.3mm and weigh 498g, sporting an 8-megapixel front camera and a 13-megapixel back one.

Finally, the source mentions battery capacity in the ballpart of 8,000mAh, though previous leaks indicated the tablet won’t even clear that threshold and instead likely peak at closer to 7,800mAh. How fast will that cell even charge is another debatable aspect of the 11-inch tablet which Samsung is expected to unveil in all of its whelming glory early next month.

Dramatic-sounding code name hints at Samsung’s first QLED Chromebook

Samsung is working on bringing QLED displays to Chromebooks in at least some of their glory, as indicated by a newly spotted device code name that sounds way more dramatic than a laptop nickname has any business being. Dubbed ‘Nightfury’, the moniker is said to belong to Samsung’s seminal QLED Chromebook, with its original reference surfacing in one Chrome OS commit dug up earlier this week. As for its inspirations, your guess is as good as anyone’s, but take your pick between DC Comics, Mad Max, and ’70s rock music if you need any ideas.

Whenever it comes to obscure mentions of experimental Chromebook configurations, it bears repeating how there are no guarantees that this Nightfury will ever amount to a commercial product.

Nightfury unlikely to be a flagship Chromebook

With that said, it seems likely that any pioneering Chromebook implementation of QLED will be far detached from anything that could be considered a remotely premium device. If Samsung intended to gradually introduce QLED panels to its Chromebook portfolio, it’s feasible to assume it would start with low-end devices. Because on the other end of the spectrum, a high-end QLED Chromebook doesn’t really make sense with the current state of tech; AMOLED displays deliver better sharpness and contrast, which is what you’d want for highlighting a high-resolution screen.

The advantage of QLED panels comes down to Samsung’s ability to produce them for cheaper and their higher theoretical peak brightness lending itself to better HDR support. But that cost-effectiveness factor will surely remain a far larger concern for the time being, especially given the number of efficiency nightmares Samsung is guaranteed to be dealing with in 2020.

Samsung likely to supply yet another iPhone 12 component

The iPhone 12 is on its way to becoming the closest thing to a Samsung device that Apple ever shipped after new analyst insight suggested the two companies are likely to reach a deal over yet another key supply contract. Quite a historic one, at that, seeing how its direct result should be the first-ever iPhone generation whose mobile photography setup incorporates Samsung lenses.

Apple will reportedly soon start testing 6P lenses from Samsung which it may not only use for the iPhone 12 series, but could even incorporate into its existing products, retrofitting assembly lines to account for new Samsung lenses.

Samsung deal an all-around win for Apple

Industry watchers from South Korea claim Samsung will start delivering its lenses to Apple by the end of the year. This newest addition to Apple’s ever-expanding network of supply chains is forecast to start modestly as Cupertino still has to make sure that Samsung-made glass is viable for its specific requirements; not so much in terms of quality, but immediate scalability.

The iPhone maker, for its part, is said to be viewing the prospect of Samsung lenses as an all-around win which diversifies its supply chain, thus improving its sustainability, and simultaneously reduces the bottom line by introducing a fourth entity to what has been a three-player game for a while now. Apple’s existing lens suppliers are GSEO, Kantas, and Largan Precision. Beyond near-term cost-effectiveness, Apple is also banking on extra rivalry accelerating technological advancements in the segment, analysts believe.

As for the actual parts Apple is interested in, it sees the primary appeal of Samsung Electro-Mechanics in telephoto solutions. Not least of all because its long-term camera partner, LG Innotek, has been dragging it through a closely related IP dispute for several years now. Samsung, on the other hand, has plenty of unique telephoto technologies to license, which is gradually turning into a pressing issue for Apple given how much stagnation already stemmed from its disagreements with LG. Particularly after the company’s 2019 acquisition of Corephotonics.

Has Samsung started working on the Galaxy S20 Android 11 update?

Is Samsung already working on the Android 11 update for the Galaxy S20 lineup? A member of the XDA Developers community spotted Android 11 mentioned as the latest OS version for the Galaxy S20 Ultra on Samsung’s official firmware version tracker, suggesting that early development has kicked off. However, it seems Samsung wants to keep it a secret, as the tracker is now mentioning Android 10 as the latest OS version available for the device.

While there’s no solid evidence right now, it wouldn’t be surprising if Samsung is already testing Android 11 for the Galaxy S20 series. It was around the same time last year that Samsung started work on the Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10 series, and every manufacturer usually begins developing the next version of the operating system for its devices months in advance.

Android 11 beta program for Galaxy S20 owners probably a few months away

The bigger question here is this: When will Samsung roll out a beta program that allows Galaxy S20 owners to test Android 11 on their devices before the public release? Well, it could be a couple of months before that happens. Google is currently in the process of beta testing Android 11, and Samsung is not likely to start any beta program until after the first stable release of Android 11 for Pixel devices.

For those wondering, the general availability of Android 10 came in early September last year, and Samsung launched the Android 10 beta program for the Galaxy S10 lineup in mid-October. However, Google has yet to say when it will make Android 11 publicly available, so there’s no way to be absolutely sure about Samsung’s plans for the Android 11 beta program at this time.

Android 11 for Galaxy devices will be accompanied by version 3.0 of Samsung One UI. One UI 3.0 will be preceded by One UI 2.5, which will debut on the upcoming Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Tab S7 and will most likely stay exclusive to those devices. The Galaxy S20 lineup, and all other Galaxy devices eligible for the Android 11 update, will probably go directly from One UI 2.0/2.1 to 3.0.

Galaxy S20 Fan Edition battery capacity, colors leak

Samsung launched three Galaxy S20 series smartphones earlier this year, but it has one more Galaxy S20 device in the works. Last month, we had exclusively reported the existence of the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, and mentioned that it is the spiritual successor to the Galaxy S10 Lite. We had also revealed the colors it will be launched in. Now, the phone’s battery capacity and additional colors have been revealed.

According to a report from GalaxyClub.nl, the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will be powered by a battery with model number EB-BG781ABY. It has a rated capacity of 4,370mAh, which is similar to the rated capacity of the battery inside the Galaxy S20+. This means that Samsung will market the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition with a typical battery capacity of 4,500mAh.

The upcoming smartphone will reportedly come in four colors—green, orange, red, and white—in Europe. There may be additional color variants (blue and violet) in other markets. The report also confirms that the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will have a triple-camera setup at the rear, featuring a 12MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

Galaxy S20 Fan Edition leaked specs, price

The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will be available in both 4G (SM-G780) and 5G variants (SM-G781). It has been reported in the past that the phone will come equipped with the Snapdragon 865 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The phone is rumored to come with a Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Full HD+ resolution, and an in-display fingerprint reader.

Another feature that the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition is slated to bring is an IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, something that was lacking in the Galaxy S10 Lite. The device is expected to feature a 32MP selfie camera. It is being reported that the device might cost $750 when it launches later this year and that Samsung is planning to ship 5 million units by the end of this year.
