Your gigabit broadband connection is no match for the Galaxy S10 5G

The Galaxy S10 5G is pulling download speeds of more than 1Gbps in the United States, where it launched through Verizon on May 17. That remarkable performance allowed Digital Trends’ Julian Chokkattu to download PUBG: Mobile, a game that weighs in at around 1.8GB, in a little less than half a minute. That same file took around two minutes to download on a Galaxy S10+ over 4G.

While that may seem fantastic, the harsh reality is that 5G doesn’t spread far at all, with Chokkattu noting that most antennas have a range of a block and a half, so indoor coverage is near non-existent. That won’t be a long-term issue, though — Verizon, alongside the other leading carriers in the United States, are working around the clock to expedite the expansion of their 5G networks.

As GSMArena so eloquently put it: this is only the beginning of 5G. The initial performance we’re seeing is fantastic, even if it is restricted to a confined geographical area. It’s important to keep in mind how long it took to roll out 4G; it started off in a metropolis and expanded to rural locations. The exact same will happen with 5G and we for one are excited for what the future holds.

The Galaxy S10 5G is scheduled to launch in the United Kingdom on June 7.

Samsung launches Galaxy S10+ Olympic Game Edition

Samsung has launched an Olympic Game Edition of the Galaxy S10+ to celebrate the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. With the event being hosted in Japan, it should come as no surprise to hear that’s also where the exclusive variant of the handset is available — though customers won’t have to wait until 2020 to snag one: it’s on sale right now through local carrier Docomo for $1000.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has released an Olympic Game Edition of a smartphone. First, we had the Galaxy Note Olympic Edition in 2012, followed by the Galaxy Note 3 Olympic Edition in 2014, the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Edition in 2016 and the Galaxy Note 8 Olympic Edition in 2018. And we should see a lot more, seeing as Samsung’s sponsorship of the event doesn’t end until 2028.

The Galaxy S10+ Olympic Game Edition isn’t all that different to the standard Prism White color variant of the Galaxy S10+ (no, not the Galaxy S10 5G), with the main difference being the inclusion of a Tokyo 2020 emblem on the rear. That same design choice has also been carried over to an Olympic Game Edition set of the Galaxy Buds, which come bundled with the handset.

There’s no word on whether Samsung is planning on bringing the Olympic Game Edition to other markets. That’s not to mean the firm doesn’t have a treat up its sleeve for other countries, however, because it does — in the past it’s launched a series of Olympic-branded applications and services, including one that allowed users to stream content in VR, and it will do the same again in 2020.

Galaxy S8+ gets the May 2019 security patch

The May 2019 security patch is gradually being rolled out to more devices. It started off with the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy A9 (2018) earlier this month. Samsung has since been rolling out the firmware update to more devices across the globe.

Samsung has now released the May 2019 security patch for the Galaxy S8+. Germany is the first market where the firmware update has been released so far. It’s only a matter of time before the update makes its way to more markets across the globe.

Galaxy S8+ May 2019 security patch

Samsung is rolling out firmware version G955FXXS4DSE1 for the Galaxy S8+ in Germany. This update is being sent out over-the-air. You can also download it from our firmware section. Despite the fact that it weighs 420MB, the update doesn’t bring much in the way of new features. All that users really get from it is the latest security maintenance release.

Fixes for dozens of Android OS security vulnerabilities are included in this latest firmware update. It also patches 21 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items which are bugs that were discovered in Samsung’s own software.

Those who are waiting for the update to arrive over-the-air should expect to receive a notification soon. They can also try pulling it manually from the Software update menu in the Settings app. Just tap on Download and install to start the process. Samsung should roll out the May 2019 security patch for the Galaxy S8 as well in the coming days.

Galaxy S10 Night camera mode not included in latest US firmware update

There’s a new firmware update rolling out for carrier-locked Galaxy S10 models in the United States. Sprint is the first to release it for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. While it does bring the latest security patch for the month of May 2019, it doesn’t bring the dedicated Night mode.

Samsung rolled out a dedicated Night mode for the Galaxy S10’s camera last month. Firmware updates for the US with the April 2019 patch didn’t include this mode as well. It seems that there’s more wait involved for users based in the United States.

Latest US Galaxy S10 update doesn’t bring the Night camera mode

Sprint is rolling out firmware version G970USQS1ASDA, G973USQS1ASDA and G975USQS1ASDA for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ respectively. The update is being rolled out over-the-air. You will soon be able to download all of the firmware files from our database as well.

The update weighs in at just under 200MB and doesn’t bring much except the May 2019 security patch. So the only thing users can look forward to with this update are the dozens of bug fixes that are part and parcel of the latest security maintenance release.

Samsung’s dedicated Night mode is definitely not included. It’s basically the Bright Night feature being spun out into its own separate mode. The Galaxy S10 would previously decide when to take a long exposure shot. With the dedicated Night mode, users can do that manually whenever they want. The actual result of these images is more or less the same.

It’s difficult to say when users in the United States will get this camera mode. With the monthly security update out of the way, it may be a month at the very least before they get it.

Brazilians love the Galaxy S10 a lot more than the Galaxy S9

Samsung has announced that Galaxy S10 sales are outperforming Galaxy S9 and S9+ sales by 80 percent in Brazil a month after launch. The Galaxy S10 lineup had received twice as many pre-orders as the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the country, and it looks like things got even better once the devices went on sale.

Samsung isn’t breaking down numbers by device, however, so we don’t know which of the three Galaxy S10s is doing the best. Of course, one can assume it’s the Galaxy S10+ leading the charge, but there’s no way to say for certain. One can hope the Galaxy S10e is also showing good sales performance, as it turned out to be a surprisingly good compact flagship that trumps the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9.

Galaxy S10 lineup also doing well in other markets

The Galaxy S10 trio are also doing well for Samsung in other parts of the world. Samsung saw its market share in North America grow on the back of Galaxy S10 sales, even though smartphone shipments in general hit a five-year low in the country. Chinese consumers have also shown strong interest in the tenth-anniversary Galaxy S lineup, at least when compared to the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

Verizon will be one of the carriers to sell Galaxy A50 in the US

Verizon will be one of the carriers selling the Galaxy A50 in the US, according to a tweet by leakster evleaks. Samsung’s 2019 lineup of Galaxy A smartphones have done pretty well in the Indian market, thanks to a mix of interesting features and attractive pricing, and it was recently revealed that some of the new A series phones may be headed to North America. And it looks like at least the Galaxy A50 will find a home at the US’ largest wireless provider.

At this time, it’s not known exactly when Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy A50 and other new Galaxy A phones stateside or how they will be priced. It also remains to be seen if other carriers will sell the Galaxy A50 or whether it will be a Verizon-exclusive. The Galaxy A50 may be a solid mid-range smartphone, but it’s not special enough for Samsung to fish around for exclusivity, so we’re guessing it will be available on most of the major carriers.

The Galaxy A50 will be accompanied by the Galaxy A20 in the US; both handsets are also expected to be sold in Canada. The Galaxy A70, meanwhile, has been certified for a Canadian launch, although Samsung may want to bring it to the US as well as the A70 has a lot going for it.

Your Samsung phone unlocks ‘Secret Menu’ items in these UK restaurants

Of all the reasons that you might want to buy a Samsung smartphone, this one has to do with food. There have long been legends about some of the biggest fast food chains on the planet having secret menus with items that are only sold to those who know about them. That may or may not be true depending on who you ask but Samsung has taken that concept to heart.

The company has teamed up with four restaurant chains in the United Kingdom for a “Secret Menu.” These dishes will only be revealed to the customers who scan a tabletop AR code at the restaurant with a Samsung phone.

Unlock “Secret Menu” items at these UK restaurants with your Samsung phone

The restaurants – Bill’s, The Breakfast Club, Patty & Bun, and Pizza Pilgrim – have created some new dishes that only Samsung smartphone owners can order. Samsung doesn’t actually detail the dishes they have created so you’ll have to pop into one of their locations to find out.

Ordering these dishes is fairly simple. Just head over to the restaurant, find a Secret Menu and look for the AR Code. Once you scan the code with your phone, you can unlock the exclusive dishes. Whether or not they will be worth the trip is another matter altogether. This will only work if you use a Samsung phone. So either you don’t eat like the cool kids and stick to the regular menu or get a Samsung phone. If that doesn’t work for you, maybe just ask a friend to help you out with their Galaxy.
