Samsung Flip is a 55-inch digital whiteboard for improving collaborative engagement

Samsung has given us a first look into its vision for a “Workplace for the Future” at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 and the Samsung Flip is at the center of it. The Samsung Flip is a 55-inch digital whiteboard that’s aimed at businesses looking to improve collaborative digital engagement.

It can be flipped between portrait and horizontal orientations and has been designed for meeting rooms. The Samsung Flip features a height-adjustable stand and it can be wheeled around the office easily.

The Samsung Flip supports multi-user engagement and allows up to four different users to introduce content or annotate directly on the UHD resolution screen at the same time using their fingers or a dual-sided pen. The Samsung Flip is powered by the Tizen 3.0 OS platform.

It features wireless connectivity, USB, PC and mobile ports to connect to a wide range of devices. There’s even an integrated screen-sharing functionality that makes Flip content available on connected PCs, smartphones and tablets without interruption or reduced quality. All of the content is secured by Samsung Flip securely within a central database.

Samsung is going to start selling the Flip to businesses later this month. It hasn’t confirmed as yet how much it’s going to cost.

It’s clearly trying to take on Microsoft and Google’s 55-inch digital whiteboards but those companies have robust operating systems and an ecosystem of services that tempt businesses to adopt them. Whether or not Samsung will be able to compete against all of that with the Flip remains to be seen.

Samsung’s Q9S 85-inch QLED TV upscales any content to 8K using artificial intelligence

Samsung has announced today that it’s going to launch its new Q9S 85-inch 8K QLED TV later this year. This is the first TV from Samsung to feature its 8K artificial intelligence technology. The AI enables the TV to upscale any video content to 8K resolution.

It uses a proprietary algorithm to adjust the screen resolution based on the picture quality of each scene. It can thus continuously improve picture quality can upscale any content from any source into 8K.

UHD TVs are still not ubiquitous so it’s going to be a while before 8K TVs become popular or even affordable for that matter. Even if you got your hands on one, there isn’t a lot of 8K content out there that can take full advantage of the TV’s potential.

This is where Samsung’s AI technology steps in. Samsung claims that it will enable users to enjoy video content in 8K resolution regardless of its native resolution or method of transmission.

The AI has a database which studies millions of images in advance to upscale low-resolution content into high resolution. If it’s fed with a source in low resolution, this feature automatically selects the optimal filter and converts the source into a high-quality image.

It then increases image processing 64 times to help provide natural images in high resolution without compromising gradation in the picture. The TV categorizes elements of picture quality (black/blooming/brightness) in input sources to produce pictures that have richer and more detailed contrast. This enables the edges of text to be rendered sharp.

The AI technology doesn’t stop there. It even enables the TV’s sound to be optimized for specific scenes automatically. For example, the cheering of spectators is amplified when watching a football game to recreate the excitement of the match.

Samsung has confirmed today that its 8K QLED TVs with AI technology are going to be launched in the second half of this year with screens larger than 65 inches.

The company hasn’t actually shown off the Q9S today so there are no pictures of it from CES 2018. Samsung did say that the design is going to be similar to the $40,000 85-inch 4K easel-style TV that it launched back in 2013.

‘The Wall’ is Samsung’s first 146-inch modular MicroLED TV

We reported a few months back that Samsung was working hard on developing alternative technologies for its next-generation premium TVs. The company has particularly been focusing on MicroLED technology and it has unveiled its latest creation at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 today.

Samsung has unveiled a massive new TV today called “The Wall.” The company describes it as the world’s first modular MicroLED 146-inch TV. It features self-emitting MicroLED technology with micrometer scale LEDs that are much smaller than existing LEDs.

The Wall MicroLED TV

Samsung has been betting on MicroLED technology to boost its premium TV business. While the company is no longer interested in making OLED TVs, MicroLED does share some traits with OLED. Both are made with light-emitting diodes and they’re self-emitting. What that means is that each sub-pixel produces its own light and there’s no need for a dedicated backlight.

MicroLED panels thus offer deep blacks and high contrast ratios like OLED panels with the added benefit being the relative ease with which they can be manufactured. These panels are also thinner than their OLED counterparts.

Samsung’s The Wall is the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED TV. It can transform into any size and deliver incredible color gamut, color volume and black levels.

The TV itself has a module-based, bezel-less design which allows customers to customize the TV’s size and shape as per their preferences. It can adapt to serve different purposes such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces.

The company hasn’t revealed how many modules it’s going to offer with this TV. It didn’t even specify how many modules were in the concept that it unveiled at CES 2018 today.

Samsung has said that it’s going to reveal information about a global launch for The Wall later this spring.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ storage and RAM variants rumored

Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when it’s going to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. We’ll continue to hear more rumors and reports about the upcoming flagship handsets until that happens. The latest rumor from China possibly reveals the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ storage and RAM variants that Samsung is going to offer.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ storage and RAM variants

According to the rumor, Samsung is going to ship two variants of the Galaxy S9. Customers will be able to choose from 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage and 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage.

As far as the Galaxy S9+ is concerned, it may have three variants. They’re said to be 6GB RAM with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of storage. It’s also claimed that there’s even going to be a 6GB RAM and 512GB internal storage variant of the Galaxy S9+ but it may only be offered in select markets and that too in limited quantity.

If this information is correct, it shows that the dual camera system isn’t going to be one of the few major differences between these two handsets. The Galaxy S9+ will also have more RAM compared to its smaller sibling.

Whether or not that’s actually true remains to be seen. We may find out at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next month where Samsung is expected to unveil this handset.
