Galaxy M22 inches closer to the launch date

Samsung has been working on another mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy M22. It is largely based on the recently-launched Galaxy A22, so they could share a lot of their specifications. The Galaxy M22 has now received a necessary certification, which means that it is closer than ever to its launch date.

The Galaxy M22 (SM-M225FV_DS) appeared in Bluetooth SIG’s database earlier today. The device features Bluetooth 5.0 with LE (Low Energy) and EDR (Enhanced Data Rate). Going by its model number, the smartphone features LTE connectivity and a dual-SIM card slot. It appears that Samsung first started testing the Galaxy M22 sometime in September 2020 as the certification database has related entries from back then.

Going by previous leaks and reports, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy M22 with a MediaTek Helio G80 processor, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It was revealed that the smartphone could come bearing a 13MP selfie camera on the front and a 48MP quad-camera setup at the rear. It should be capable of recording 1080p videos, similar to the Galaxy A22.

The Galaxy M22 could also debut with Android 11 out of the box (with One UI 3.x). The phone may come with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. It could also feature LTE, GPS, WI-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone could come powered by a 6,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging.

Verizon’s Galaxy S21 series grabs the essential June 2021 update

Samsung has rolled out no less than three updates for the Galaxy S21 series in June. The first two were limited to very few markets, presumably due to some underlying issues that Samsung didn’t feel the need to reveal to the public. The company finally managed to get things right with the next attempt as the third June update saw an international rollout, and this week, the June update made its way to the US as well.

The stateside rollout started with carrier variants on Xfinity Mobile and Comcast, but it turns out Verizon has also released the same update to its customers. The Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra are getting updated with software version G99xUSQU4AUF5 on Verizon, and other major carriers in the country are likely to join the party soon.

Fixes for camera lag and device overheating are included

The update enhances security thanks to the bundled June 2021 security patch, but more importantly, it fixes the lag that has been spoiling the camera experience on Samsung’s latest flagships and also improves performance of the camera’s Portrait (bokeh) mode. Device overheating has been addressed as well, making this one of the more essential updates for the Galaxy S21 lineup since it was launched earlier this year.

However, it doesn’t look like the Android Auto crashing issues have been fixed with the June update, as users report those still persist. But that is to be expected, as Samsung has those fixes planned for the update that will roll out for the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra next month.

As usual, downloading the latest update is as easy as opening the phone’s Settings » Software update menu and tapping the download button. Manually upgrading to the new software is also an option if you have a Windows PC – just grab the latest firmware from our archives and follow the instructions on the download page.

Samsung’s global brand value position has fallen down in 2021

The global brand value is the measure of a brand’s recognition and perception among people worldwide. Major companies invest heavily in marketing and brand-building to improve their brand equity.

Samsung is also one of the largest brands in the world. However, the company’s position in the top 100 brands across the globe has fallen down slightly compared to last year. The latest market research has revealed the decline in the company’s brand value.

Samsung loses a couple of spots in the rankings

British market researcher Kantar has released its list of top 100 most valuable global brands. It notes that the total value of all brands combined has increased by an impressive 42% to over $7 trillion. This showcases incredible growth on part of the world’s top brands as the pandemic’s economic toll reverses course.

Amazon remains the most valuable brand in the world. It has grown by 64% to reach a brand value of $684 billion in 2021. Samsung has long been a fixture on this list as well but it’t yet to crack the top ten. The company has actually seen a decline in its ranking. It’s now the 42nd most valuable brand in the world,. Samsung has lost two places on the list since last year when it ranked 40th in global brand value.

The report estimates Samsung’s brand value at $46.8 billion. It has done well in dollar terms because that represents a 44% increase in its monetary brand value. Samsung has lost two places because there are 13 new entrants that have joined the 2021 list. A couple of them, like NVIDIA with $105 billion, have a brand value greater than Samsung.

The United States remains the largest contributor to the list. 74 US companies occupy various spots in the list of top 100 most valuable brands across the globe.

Samsung’s new chipsets are designed to enhance 5G network performance

During the Samsung Networks: Redefined virtual event today, the South Korean firm unveiled its new chipsets that enhance the performance and power efficiency of 5G networks. They also help reduce the size of the company’s next-generation 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) solutions. All the new chips are compliant with 3GPP’s Release 16 standards.

Samsung Networks, Samsung’s cellular network equipment development arm, unveiled its third-generation mmWave RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit), second-generation 5G modem SoC, and the DFE-RFIC (Digital Front End-Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit). These chips will be used in Samsung’s next-generation 5G network infrastructure, including 5G Compact Macro, baseband units, and Massive MIMO radios.

The company’s first-generation 5G RFIC chip was released in 2017 and was used to power the world’s first home broadband service. The second-generation 5G RFIC was launched in 2019, and it was utilized to power the industry’s first mmWave 5G NR radio. The third-generation RFIC, which was unveiled today, supports 28GHz and 39GHz spectrums, and it will be used in the company’s new 5G Compact Macro. It reduces the antenna size by 50% and improves power efficiency. It also features double the output power.

Samsung’s second-generation 5G modem SoC helps the upcoming baseband unit in offering twice the capacity and halves the power consumption. The new SoC also supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums. It even offers beamforming functionality to offer faster network speeds via 5G Compact Macro and Massive MIMO radios and reduces their physical size.

The DFE-RFIC, which converts digital signals into analog and vice versa, is an essential component used in 5G radios. It supports 28GHz and 39GHz spectrums. Sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums are supported as well. The chip increases the output power and reduces the size of Samsung’s next-generation 5G network solutions.

Samsung’s network business offers an end-to-end 5G infrastructure, including 5G vRAN, chipsets, radios, and 5G core. It also offers advanced solutions for private 5G networks and AI-powered network automation tools. Cellular operators around the world use Samsung’s 5G network infrastructure.

Samsung’s new 5G radio has one antenna, except not really

Samsung has just launched a new 5G radio meant to facilitate the deployment of fifth-generation mobile networks. Called the One Antenna Radio, this piece of tech actually has multiple integrated antennas, arranged in such a fashion so as to streamline the process of building out high-speed cellular coverage. This setup hence supports both mid-band and low-band connections in one device, serving as a catch-all solution for urban 5G.

A unified form factor is a pretty big selling point if you’re a wireless carrier amid a large-scale 5G rollout right now. Because the vast majority of countries have pretty strict regulation in terms of what can and cannot be done in urban settings.

One size can, indeed, fit all

This is something the One Antenna Radio is looking to solve as it supports the entire array of the latest mobile technologies while requiring a smaller footprint compared to a typical cellular tower. Combined with minimal cabling and overall refined design, this solution should be as inconspicuous as they come.

Samsung’s One Antenna Radio is going to debut as a key new offering in the company’s Radio Access Network (RAN) portfolio starting early next year. While it is first meant to debut in Europe, the Seoul-based giant is looking to have its tech expand beyond the Old Continent. There’s no exact timeline attached to that ambition as of yet, however. But given how little the network division of Samsung Electronics contributes to its overall prospects, the release of this product certainly signals the company’s growing confidence in 5G.

Samsung provides update on its 5G (and 6G) progress: ‘Infinite’ possibilities and counting

Samsung today revealed its medium-term vision for what constitutes the future of 5G. The company did so at a virtual event called Samsung Networks: Redefined, which saw it talk up its recent advancements in the space, announce a couple new products, and then some.

For starters, the conglomerate confirmed it’s virtualizing the entirety of its Radio Access Network portfolio. The reasoning behind the move is fairly straightforward: improved performance, scalability, and versatility. All at a reduced cost, not to mention the overall improved platform resiliency.

Four million 5G radios and counting, 6G, and then some…

In effect, Samsung remains convinced its technologies can power “infinite possibilities”. One infinity is more than two, however, and that’s precisely what today’s announcements of new chips and integrated 5G New Radio solutions hint at.

Samsung Networks: Redefined also saw the company remind everyone that 6G is very much on its radar. In fact, the whole concept of “redefining” the future of wireless connectivity arguably rests on its ability to pave the way toward 6G solutions. No matter what those might constitute or how far away they actually are. Though the short answer is “pretty far away.”

A lot of Samsung‘s near-term ambitions in the 5G space are focused on Europe. Possibly because that’s where the largest contracts are being won right now. Long-term, the company’s goal is to strengthen its wireless offerings across the board and borders, alike. All as part of a large-scale diversification effort that’s seeing Samsung invest in quite an array of technologies beyond those immediately applicable to the world of consumer electronics.

Here’s what the Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition looks like in real life (hint: it’s pretty)

The Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition isn’t as exclusive as its predecessors were, in the sense that even us mortals can buy it. At least in Japan, that is. Though getting your hands on one shipped straight from NTT Docomo isn’t too difficult of a feat, either, assuming money isn’t an issue.

But anyway, here’s how the device looks like in real life, courtesy of one early reviewer from the Far East:

The Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition isn’t as exclusive as its predecessors

As a reminder, the Galaxy S20 Olympic Edition has gotten cancelled together with the original Tokyo Olympics and the rest of 2020. But it would seem the original deal Samsung had with DTT Docomo still stood. As the Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition is said to pretty much be last year’s device with updated specs. Not too shabby turn of an events, considering how much better the Galaxy S21 turned out to be compared to its predecessor.

Another distinct feature of the Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition is an exclusive One UI 3.1 skin running on top of the flagship. As can be seen from the screenshots below. Dark mode support is included, but there are no limited-edition soundscapes to speak of here. Which wasn’t the case with previous Olympic Editions of Samsung flagships, mind you.

The chances of this device officially making its way out of Japan are pretty much nil. But again, having one shipped to you is only a question of finding the right seller online and having enough disposable income.

Galaxy A72 starts getting the June 2021 security update

Samsung’s latest higher mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A72, has started getting a new software update. It improves the privacy and security aspects of the device. Right now, the new update for the Galaxy A72 is rolling out in a handful of countries, and we expect a wider rollout over the next few days.

The Galaxy A72 (SM-A725F) has started receiving this update in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. The new software, which has firmware version A725FXXU2AUF3, includes the June 2021 security patch. According to the South Korean giant, the new security patch includes fixes for 47 vulnerabilities present inside the stock Android codebase and fixes for 19 vulnerabilities found inside Samsung’s own software.

If you are a Galaxy A72 user in any of the countries mentioned above, you can either wait for the OTA update to arrive or manually check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

The Galaxy A72 was unveiled in March 2021 alongside the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A52 5G. The device debuted with Android 11-based One UI 3.1, and it received the May 2021 security update with some new features, including the video call effects.

Galaxy S21’s most important software update (since launch) reaches the USA

The Galaxy S21 lineup received one of its most important software updates recently, one that brought an end to the camera lag woes many Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra owners had been facing and also fixed device overheating. That update now seems to have reached the USA, where both Comcast and Xfinity Mobile are rolling it out to their respective variants. The firmware version for the new update is G99xUSQU4AUF5.

As Samsung had detailed, the newest update for its top-of-the-line flagships optimizes the camera’s Portrait mode and fixes the lag encountered when zooming in and zooming out. It also adds the ability to scan QR codes saved in the device gallery when using the built-in QR code scanner (accessed from the toggles area of the notification shade). The video call effects feature has been improved as well, and Samsung says overheating shouldn’t be an issue once the update has been installed.

In addition to all those improvements, the latest Galaxy S21 update also includes the June 2021 security patch. You can download it over the air on your phone by opening its Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. It can also be downloaded from our firmware archive, though you will need to use a Windows PC to install it on your Galaxy S21 if you skip the over-the-air method.
