Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Athletes Edition appears in live image

While there’s a chance of Olympic 2020 games in Tokyo getting canceled, Samsung has announced a special edition Galaxy S20 in partnership with NTT Docomo to mark the special international sporting event. Yesterday, we saw the first press renders of the smartphone. Now, the first live image of the Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Athletes Edition has appeared on the internet.

The phone looks classy in its Matte Gold avatar. It doesn’t have the usual Samsung logo on its rear. Instead, there’s a Galaxy logo, which is synonymous with the company’s brand name in Japan. The Olympics Tokyo 2020 logo is also present inside the phone’s Gorilla Glass 6 back. Other than that, there’s no difference between this special edition phone and the regular Galaxy S20+ 5G in terms of specs and features.

Unlike some other Olympic Edition Galaxy devices in the past, which were solely gifted to participating athletes, Samsung will sell the Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Athletes Edition to customers in June 2020. The phone is available for reservation in Japan via NTT Docomo. It costs JPY 114,840 ($1,046), which is just $16 more than the price of the standard version of the phone.

It remains to be seen if the Olympic 2020 games go as planned, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic. Various other launch events and sporting events have been canceled over the past two months. However, even if the 2020 Summer Olympics get canceled, the phone should be available for purchase.

Samsung to shut down TV plant in Slovakia over COVID-19 scare

Samsung announced earlier today that it would shut down its TV manufacturing plant in Slovakia due to the COVID-19 outbreak and to stop it from spreading further. The plant will remain shut for a week, starting Monday. However, the company’s TV manufacturing plants in Hungary and Poland will remain operational, as usual.

Samsung’s TV plant will remain shut for a week

The South Korean company said that the decision has been taken for the safety of the employees and to prevent them from the possible contraction of COVID-19. Despite the announcement, the company’s shares were trading 4.3 percent higher compared to the previous session. However, if the shut down stays longer than a week, the company would face plunged profits.

The European Union closed its borders and imposed a 30-day ban on travelers from outside the region after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. Samsung had to temporarily close its smartphone factories in Koreaexperience stores in Malaysia, and retail stores in the US due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The company is also taking other measures to do its part in stopping the spread of the novel virus. It donated $24.6 million in South Korea to help contain the virus. It is also encouraging its employees to work from home where possible. Samsung has also started offering Galaxy Sanitizing Service to smartphone users free of cost to disinfect their devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite seen once again in leaked render

We first reported three weeks ago that Samsung might be calling its next budget tablet the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. A render of the tablet, bearing model number SM-P615, was later leaked online.

A fresh render of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has now appeared online, hinting at the possibility that a launch may not be that far off. Since this is a budget product, don’t expect much more than a press release announcing its arrival.

Another Galaxy Tab S6 Lite render surfaces online

Even though it shares its name with Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Tab S6, it’s far from a slightly toned-down version of that tablet. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite specs will include the Exynos 9611 processor that’s also found in mid-range smartphones like the Galaxy A50s. It will be available with 64/128GB storage and 4GB of RAM.

The latest render, posted online by @evleaks, gives us a good look at this upcoming tablet. We can see that all of its physical buttons are placed at the right side of the frame while the design itself doesn’t appear to be that different from the Galaxy Tab S5e. This new tablet will be accompanied by the S Pen so it’s going to allow users to do much more, courtesy of the stylus.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has picked up some regulatory approvals recently, it has even cleared the FCC, so it may not be long now before it’s launched. Samsung also has a new flagship tablet in the pipeline which may be launched as the Galaxy Tab S7 or the Galaxy S20. It’s not due to arrive until at least the summer this year.

Galaxy Note 20, Fold 2, and Zodiac projects revealed by kernel code

Samsung recently released the kernel sources for the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra. Aside from helping third-party developers in creating new tools for Samsung’s latest flagships, the kernel code also seems to contain clues regarding a few of the company’s upcoming creations, according to XDA-Developers. This includes the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Fold 2, and a third unknown device referred to as Project Zodiac.

To be clear, none of these devices are mentioned outright, but rather, the kernel code makes references to codenames including Project XYZ (the Galaxy S20 series); Project Canvas, which could be the Galaxy Note 20; and Project Winner 2, which we believe to be the Galaxy Fold 2, as discovered by our colleagues at GalaxyClub a couple of months ago.

No evidence of an Exynos chipset yet

Unsurprisingly, Project Canvas and Project Winner 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset, according to the kernel code. No clues are hinting at an Exynos alternative, but this doesn’t mean that there won’t be one, at least as far as the Galaxy Note 20 is concerned. Even as shareholders question Samsung’s decision to continue to rely on its in-house high-end chipset solution, the company will likely want to keep supporting its System LSI division by adopting Qualcomm’s chipset in some markets, and the Exynos silicon in others.

Interestingly, there are other references to a third, mysterious device codenamed Zodiac. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 855 and it appears to be destined only for the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, other config files found within the kernel code indicate that the Snapdragon 865-powered Project Canvas/Galaxy Note 20 is headed for the US market, while Project Winner 2/Galaxy Fold 2 is going to be released in Europe. Evidently, both the Galaxy Note 20 and the true sequel to the Galaxy Fold will be released in many other regions, but this is what the kernel sources have revealed thus far.

We’re roughly half a year away from the next Unpacked event where the Galaxy Note 20 and Fold 2 should be unveiled – assuming that the coronavirus pandemic won’t change all that – so there’s still a lot to be uncovered until then. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you up to speed.

Samsung revises its business expectations amid coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting businesses around the world to a greater or lesser extent, and at a recent annual Samsung meeting in Seoul, Chief Executive Ki-Nam Kim spoke about how the company expects its main operations to be affected by the recent unfortunate events.

Samsung anticipates the global smartphone market to shrink as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, states Business Insider. As we’ve reported a couple of months ago, Samsung was betting big on 5G this year, and the good news is that demand for 5G smartphones should continue to increase. On the other hand, the 5G smartphone segment will grow at a slower pace than initially thought, and Samsung will have to revisit its expectations.

Samsung’s semiconductor business should continue to grow

Meanwhile, demand for data center and network components is expected to steadily rise, despite the coronavirus pandemic. And while other chipmakers will reportedly focus on improving their manufacturing processes throughout the year, Samsung expects to cash in on its data center and network solutions. Many clients will want to migrate more of their data center operations to the cloud, and network operators will reportedly increase their demand in the long run as well. This should boost Samsung’s semiconductor business.

Samsung has been on top of things ever since it discovered the first case of coronavirus at its Gumi plant weeks ago. The company has been taking different measures to combat the epidemic (now a pandemic). It advised its employees to work from home, it shut down its Experience Stores in numerous countries, and it even provided useful guidelines on how to clean your smartphone to decrease the chances of infection. The company also offered free Galaxy Sanitizing Services at its official service centers around the world.

Experience Stores in Malaysia shut down after coronavirus lockdown

The 2020 Malaysia Movement Control Order was implemented on March 16 as a preemptive measure to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and Samsung Electronics has done its part by closing down all of its Experience Stores nationwide.

The company announced that all of its 68 Experience Stores in Malaysia will be temporarily shut down, but they should, in theory, reopen on March 31. This decision won’t be entirely in Samsung’s hands, evidently, and whether or not the stores will be reopened at the end of the month will depend on how the coronavirus pandemic will continue to evolve. Samsung states that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates accordingly.

Fortunately, as in most other cases including in Canada and the United States, Samsung’s online operations will remain open in Malaysia. Fans of the brand who might want to acquire the latest Galaxy S20 flagship or pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip can still do so unhindered.

However, Samsung didn’t touch on the ongoing Galaxy S20 in-store promotion in its latest announcement, and it’s unclear how it will fulfill these orders now that Malaysia is in lockdown because of the coronavirus. For readers who might not be aware, Malaysian customers could get a 128GB microSD card and a Wireless Charging Pad for free along with their flagship phones from ‘participating outlets,’ i.e., physical retail stores, between March 6-31.

Galaxy Tab A4 S / SM-T307 makes surprise return in online benchmark

It’s been months since the unannounced SM-T307 / Galaxy Tab A4 S was spotted in the wild. Now, it’s back in the headlines after a recent entry in the online benchmark Geekbench. The tablet was tested on March 18 running Android 9, confirming our early report and the fact that the Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) isn’t the only upcoming mid-range tablet set to ship with an older Android OS version out of the box. They certainly don’t seem to be getting the same level of attention as the upcoming Galaxy Tab S7/Tab S20 flagship, but that’s only natural given their lower price points.

According to the benchmark entry, the Galaxy Tab A4 S is equipped with the Exynos 7885 octa-core chipset. It’s the same silicon that was employed by several Galaxy smartphones before, including the Galaxy A7 and A8 (2018), but never by a Galaxy tablet. The Exynos 7885 SoC is paired with 3GB of RAM.

This concludes the list of details revealed by the benchmark, however, a few months ago our sources told us that the Galaxy Tab A4 S will be available with 32GB of built-in storage. We were also told that the tablet will be released in only one color option, namely brown.

The Galaxy Tab A4 S was certified by Bluetooth, the FCC, and the Wi-Fi Alliance late last year, and we’re guessing that it shouldn’t take much longer before it will be officially introduced.

Olympics may be canceled but the Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Edition is real

Samsung and Japanese carrier NTT Docomo have announced the Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Edition; a limited run of the flagship bearing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics logo on a Matte Gold finish. It lacks the Samsung branding because ‘Galaxy’ is synonym to the company’s name in Japan, and because the device follows Samsung’s reworked 2020 Tokyo Olympics marketing strategy.

The smartphone itself is no different than the regular Galaxy S20+ 5G model, at least as far as the hardware is concerned. But it will likely ship with a Tokyo 2020 Olympics theme aside from having a unique exterior design.

Unlike other Olympic Games Edition devices unveiled in the past, this one wasn’t created solely for Olympians. It will be sold to customers, much like the Galaxy S10+ Olympic Games Edition was last year, and it should ship in June. The Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Edition is available for reservation via NTT Docomo and costs JPY 114,840 ($1,046), or about $16 more than the standard version.

Now, whether or not the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place according to the original July 24 – August 9 schedule remains to be seen. Numerous sporting events have been canceled or postponed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, from UEFA’s Premier League to F1 and Formula E. But even if the Olympics will not go according to plan, the launch of the Galaxy S20+ 5G Olympic Games Edition should be unhindered.

Samsung Brazil fulfills Galaxy S20 orders early amid coronavirus pandemic

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Samsung Brazil has decided to fulfill Galaxy S20 and S20+ orders earlier than initially planned as a way to avoid crowding the stores and shopping malls. Now, instead of having to wait until April 3, customers who have pre-ordered the new flagship will have their orders fulfilled gradually beginning March 20.

This new change of plans benefits only Galaxy S20 and S20+ customers. The launch schedule of the Galaxy S20 Ultra remains unchanged, and the device will ship on April 3. Meanwhile, customers who have pre-purchased the S20 or S20+ will be able to pick up their orders from physical stores beginning tomorrow, or they will receive them in the mail by the end of the month. All three models were initially planned to go on sale on April 3.

Samsung Brazil highlights that pre-order bonuses will remain unchanged, even if the pre-order period has ended prematurely for two of its three flagships. Customers who will buy one of the Galaxy S20 models before April 5 will be eligible for pre-order bonuses, and they will get a Galaxy Watch Active 2 for free along with their new flagship.

Samsung has already shut down its Experience Stores in a few countries including China, Canada, and the USA. The company might be forced to eventually do the same in other regions, including Brazil, and perhaps this is Samsung’s way of shipping as many S20 units to customers as possible before that happens. We’ll keep you posted.

Pre-bookings for the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy S20 series opened in India last month. Although Samsung unveiled four colorways—Mirror Black, Mirror Gold, Mirror Purple, and Thom Browne—for the Galaxy Z Flip, the phone was available in India in just two colors: Mirror Black and Mirror Purple. Samsung has now announced that it is bringing the Mirror Gold version of the foldable smartphone to the Indian market very soon.

Samsung heir visits company’s display plant in South Korea amid COVID-19 outbreak

In the middle of the COVID-19 virus outbreak all over the world, Samsung’s Vice Chairman Lee Jae-Yong visited one of the company’s display manufacturing plants in Korea. He visited the Asan plant in South Chungcheong Province in South Korea to encourage the company’s employees to overcome the current health crisis.

Lee Jae-Yong, who is the heir apparent of the Samsung Group, also checked the company’s future business plans. This is the second time he has visited factories and manufacturing facilities in Korea. Earlier this month, he also visited the company’s smartphone plant in Gumi in North Gyeongsang Province. This is the same plant where some of the employees had contracted the COVID-19 virus.

Lee said, “Because of this unexpected variable, I know everyone feels pressure, but we should not stop. We need wisdom that can look beyond the crisis.” The company closed its plants for a few days due to the pandemic, and it recently announced that it is shutting down all of its retail stores in the US until further notice. The company has donated $24.6 million in South Korea to help contain the virus.

Samsung Display had announced that it would invest around $11 billion by 2025 to upgrade all of its LCD panel manufacturing units to Quantum Dot panels.
