The Galaxy Note might be back, just not in the way you thought

The Galaxy Note series is back! Well, sort of, but not yet. As many of you know, Samsung decided not to release a new Note model this year, leaving fans wondering if the series will make a return. And assuming that the latest leaked renders are even close to accurate, it looks like the spirit of the Galaxy Note series will live on through the upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra, which should be due in January.

If you missed the breaking news yesterday, the Galaxy S22 Ultra showed up in leaked renders via OnLeaks. They depict a smartphone with a Note-like square footprint, an S Pen slot, and an oddly shaped camera housing. So odd, in fact, that it is causing many people to question the authenticity of said leaked design.

To be fair, early leaks aren’t always entirely accurate, so later ones featuring the Galaxy S22 Ultra could showcase a redesigned camera housing. But while this discussion about the rear design is taking place, I’m more interested in the part about the S Pen slot.

The king is dead, long live the S Pen!

There’s some debate as to whether or not the leaked model will be called the Galaxy S22 Ultra or if it will incorporate the “Note” brand. Personally, I’d be fine with either option — or even a third, because I don’t put as much value on the label itself as I do on the experience. If this smartphone can deliver the same experience as a Galaxy Note, then in my eyes, it will be one, even if it won’t carry the name forward.

If the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a dedicated S Pen slot, you could say that the Galaxy Note 21 Ultra was delayed until January 2022 and got renamed. And sorry fellows, the argument that the Galaxy Note series is technically superior to the Galaxy S beyond the inclusion of an S Pen just doesn’t fly and hasn’t for a few years. Probably since 2018. The Galaxy Note 8 is gone. And, let’s face it. The series had already peaked in popularity, and there were no signs of a stronger comeback.

I’m going to say something that’s probably controversial for hardcore Galaxy Note fans, so brace yourself. But if this delay in the Galaxy Note series helps the S Pen become more popular across multiple device series, I’m honestly all for it. Because as I shared last year, breaking the S Pen’s exclusivity could allow Samsung to spend more resources on the S Pen’s hardware and software suite, leading to a better experience for more customers. I’d take that over holding the S Pen hostage for a sense of exclusivity, any day.

Galaxy S22 big leaks season has begun; make sure you don’t miss out

The leaks are promising, and I’m all for dropping the S Pen’s exclusivity and adding a dedicated S Pen slot to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but let’s not celebrate quite yet. Nothing’s confirmed until it is, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If the camera housing design was inaccurate, maybe the S Pen slot was, too. I’m hopeful it wasn’t, but let’s wait and see. Perhaps this is all part of a long-term plan designed by Samsung to proliferate the S Pen, and it’s all starting to make sense little by little.

What’s your take on the future of the S Pen and the Galaxy Note series? Do you care if the “Note” brand itself disappears? Or do you care more about the S Pen and have faith that Samsung will deliver the goods at Galaxy Unpacked in January?

This was the first big design leak pertaining to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the rest of the series — including the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+/Galaxy S22 Pro — followed. You can be sure that more leaks will be coming over the next days and weeks, and who knows?! Things can change by the time Samsung hosts the next Unpacked event. So stay tuned, and we’ll keep you up to speed.

Samsung could launch a Galaxy Note device alongside the Galaxy S22 series

Multiple leaks told us that the prospects of Samsung launching a new Galaxy Note device this year are dim. Shortly after, we found out that the Galaxy S22 Ultra would ship with an S-Pen slot. It was slated to be, for all intents and purposes, the de-facto Galaxy Note replacement. Now a new leak takes that assumption and cranks it up to a whole new level.

Renowned Twitter leaker @Chunvn8888 tells us that Samsung is switching things up a little this time around. The Galaxy S22 will remain as it is, while the Galaxy S22+ could be renamed the Galaxy S22 Pro. That leaves us with the king of the hill, aka the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which will apparently be sold as, get this, the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra.

Samsung could finally merge the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note line of smartphones this year

Now, that is a lot of information to unpack. For starters, if the Galaxy S22 Ultra is indeed going to be launched as the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra, why were there no mentions of it anywhere? It could either be a last-minute change that is meant to take everyone by surprise or miscommunication of sorts between the leaker and his source.

Secondly, the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra name implies that a regular Galaxy Note 22 exists. It is unlikely that Samsung will launch four smartphones all at once; even less so when there’s a raging semiconductor crisis. Perhaps ‘Galaxy Note 22 Ultra’ is merely how Samsung employees refer to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

While this argument is strictly semantic, it also puts down the Galaxy S22 series below the Galaxy Note, due to the marginal specifications differences between the Galaxy S22 Pro/+ and the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra.

Nonetheless, the existence of the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra sits in line with earlier reports which speculated that Samsung would merge the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note line of smartphones, complete with an embedded S-Pen silo and all that.

BREAKING: Galaxy S22 render images are finally here

The renders of the Galaxy S22 Ultra were leaked last night, and earlier today, the render images of the Galaxy S22+ were revealed. Now, the first render images of the vanilla Galaxy S22 have been published. Leakster @OnLeaks has collaborated with @ZuotonUS to reveal the design of the Galaxy S22.

As you can see in the images and video below, the Galaxy S22 seems to have a design that’s similar to that of the Galaxy S21. The device features a 6.06-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, a triple-camera setup with a metal housing at the rear, and a USB Type-C port. There appears to be a loudspeaker at the bottom and the power and volume buttons are on the right side of the phone. The phone seems to have a metal body.

Samsung’s upcoming high-end smartphone is expected to come equipped with the Exynos 2200 processor (Snapdragon 898 in some markets), a 50MP+12MP+10MP triple-camera setup at the rear, stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint reader, an IP68 rating, a 3,700mAh battery, 25W fast charging, and Qi wireless charging. Of course, the phone will have 5G connectivity and it could debut in January 2022 with Android 12 onboard.

BREAKING: Galaxy S22+ renders are here, raise an important question

The floodgates have opened, and we could be in for quite a ride as far as early Galaxy S22 series information is concerned. High-quality renders of the Galaxy S22 Ultra leaked out less than 24 hours back, showcasing a new rear camera design that has drawn some criticism.

We now have renders of the Galaxy S22+ to gawk at, and they raise an important question: Why do the Ultra and Plus models of the Galaxy S22 lineup have different designs? It also raises the question of whether the S22 Ultra renders we saw are accurate. If they aren’t, it could mean that the Galaxy S22 Ultra won’t actually have a built-in slot for the S Pen.

If they are accurate, it could be that Samsung is designing next year’s Ultra model to be unique while continuing the Galaxy S21 design language for the regular and Plus models. Alas, since the Galaxy S22 series isn’t expected to launch for another three or four months, there’s no way to be really sure of anything at this time.

In fact, the source of these Galaxy S22+ renders even says that they received the renders as the Galaxy S22 Pro, which means there’s either something fishy going on or these leaks are simply coming too early. Here’s hoping future leaks make the picture a little more clear, though we’d prefer if there were no big leaks at all so the element of surprise isn’t ruined before the Galaxy S22 lineup makes its official appearance.
