Samsung Internet 10.2 released, brings back Video Assistant feature

Samsung has released version 10.2 of the Samsung Internet browser and is bringing back the popular Video Assistant feature. To be clear, Video Assistant already made its return in the beta version of Samsung Internet three months ago, and it is now making its way to the stable version of the browser.

However, as we had explained before, Video Assistant is no longer as useful as it was before Samsung pulled it from the browser. Now, the feature does not allow you to open videos in a pop-up window on every site but only on websites that allow it. So, if you were hoping to watch YouTube videos in a pop-up window without paying for YouTube Premium by opening youtube.com in Samsung Internet, you’re out of luck.

However, Video Assistant isn’t a total loss in its reincarnation, as it still lets you watch videos on websites in full screen and stream them to the TV with one tap. Version 10.2 of Samsung Internet also brings the ability to relocate the buttons on the bottom toolbar, adds thumbnails to list view for the tab manager, and introduces something called “Allowed Apps”, which lets you stop apps from forcibly opening Samsung Internet.

You can download Samsung Internet 10.2 from Google Play. We also have the APK for the app in our APK section, which you can use to manually install the latest version of Samsung Internet on your phone or tablet.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite benchmark reveals Exynos 9810, 6GB of RAM

At long last, we are finally getting to see some of the specs the Galaxy Note 10 Lite could offer. The cheaper Galaxy Note 10 variant (SM-N770F) has surfaced on the Geekbench benchmark database, sporting the Exynos 9810 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and Android 10. Earlier this week, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s Bluetooth-enabled S Pen was certified by the FCC, and the device is rumored to be launching sometime in December, at least in India.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite could be less powerful than the Galaxy S10 Lite

The Exynos 9810 and 6GB of RAM make the Galaxy Note 10 Lite less powerful than the Galaxy S10 Lite, which is also expected to launch soon and has a Snapdragon 855 and 8GB of RAM under the hood. The Note 10 Lite’s name and specs make it seem like it could have the design of the Galaxy Note 10 and the specs of the Galaxy Note 9. That would certainly not be a bad combination if the price is right, and the S Pen will no doubt be the main attraction.

All we can do is speculate, however, as Samsung has been doing a pretty good job of keeping the Galaxy Note 10 Lite under wraps. It was nearly two months ago that we revealed the existence of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, but it’s only now that the device is starting to make public appearances. More details should surface soon, and you can rest assured we will let you know as soon as we learn something new.

Galaxy Note 8 is being updated with December security patch

Samsung has yet again beaten Google to the punch in releasing the next Android security patch for its devices before Google has officially released details of the security patch. Samsung released the December security update for the Galaxy A50 less than a day ago, and it has now pushed out a similar update for the Galaxy Note 8.

The update is rolling out in Panama, where the November security update for the Galaxy Note 8 was released in mid-November, which is a good indication of how serious Samsung is getting with security updates, at least in some markets. The company is even working hard on the Android 10 update and is currently hoping to release it for both budget and flagship devices in January, 2020.

The Galaxy Note 8’s December update sports software version N950FXXS8DSK1 and should be making its way to other countries in the coming days. It contains only security fixes, and you can check if the update is available for your phone by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, then selecting Download and install. Alternatively, you can update your phone by downloading the latest firmware from our firmware archive.

Both budget and flagship Galaxy phones could get Android 10 in January

In what would be a first for Samsung, the next version of Android could be released for both budget and flagship smartphones within a few weeks. According to Samsung India’s roadmap for the Android 10 update, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, Galaxy M20, Galaxy M30, Galaxy A30 are all set to be updated to Android in January.

While it’s a bit unfortunate that Samsung is aiming for a January release for the stable Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update for even the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, it would be quite the feat if the company manages to push the update out to those other devices in the first month of 2020. And it could do certainly manage that, as it started developing Android 10 firmware for the Galaxy M20 and M30 in mid-November and is already running beta programs for the 2019 and 2018 flagships.

Galaxy Fold, Tab S6, A50, and more to get Android 10 in April

The inclusion of the Galaxy A30 might seem a bit surprising, as it isn’t one of the more popular A series phones launched in 2019, but its hardware is rather similar to that of the Galaxy M30 so Samsung should be able to update it around the same time. Unfortunately, it seems no device will be updated in February. The Galaxy M40 is slated to get the update in March, but the rollout will only begin in earnest for the rest of Samsung’s eligible devices — including the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Tab S6 — from April.

However, there’s reason to be optimistic, as these schedules often apply only to the country where they are posted – Samsung Israel, for example, says the Galaxy S9 update will be out in April. And, as Samsung notes, these schedules can change in the future, so the estimated time frames for the update’s release aren’t set in stone.

Check out the image below to see when you can expect your Galaxy phone or tablet to get Android 10 in India. If you reside in a different country, you can check if a similar schedule has been posted for your country by going into the Notices section of the Samsung Members app.

Samsung opens the largest Experience Store in the UK, offers discounts

Samsung UK is opening a brand new Experience Store in Westfield Stratford City, just in time for Black Friday. The flagship venue has an area of 480 square meters and it is officially UK’s largest Samsung Experience Store, not counting the giant Samsung KX experience center opened in London roughly three months ago.

Readers might recall that Samsung already launched a store in Westfield London earlier in the year. However, that was a temporary pop-up ‘Galaxy Studio’ store meant to sell more Galaxy S10 units, while the latest venue is a full-fledged Experience Store where people can check out the full range of Galaxy products. The store also hosts Galaxy Workshops and includes an on-site repair service.

Samsung Experience Store Stratford runs exclusive limited-time deals

To celebrate the opening of the new SES, the company is offering in-store discounts on a wide variety of products for a limited time, starting today and ending December 3.

The 128GB Galaxy S10 is offered for £599, while the Galaxy Note 10 has a starting price of £769. The company also discounted a handful of mid-range devices from the Galaxy A (2019) series, including the Galaxy A20e, Galaxy A50, and Galaxy A80.

Likewise, Samsung’s latest tablets are available at a lower price. The Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab S5e with 64GB of storage now costs £299, while the Galaxy Tab S6 will set you back £549. If you’re looking for a more affordable solution, the Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab A with 32GB of memory comes with a discounted price tag of £149. Last but not least, the 42mm and 46mm Galaxy Watch is available for £179 and £199, respectively.

These offers will be available until December 3 or while stocks last, but there’s even more good news. Visitors will get a free personalized tote bag customized by the Grafitti Kings along with every purchase, and they can also get their selfies printed on a cup of coffee. The launch event will be backed by an in-store DJ playing the latest hits.

Are you going to visit the new Samsung Experience Store in Westfield Stratford City? Don’t hesitate to share your experience with us in the comment section below.

Samsung’s market share in Canada drops by 6.8% YoY to 32% total in Q3

The Canadian smartphone market is dominated by Samsung and Apple, but out of the two tech giants, Samsung has been losing market share in Canada while Apple gained 8.8% since 12 months ago, according to Counterpoint Research.

Samsung’s smartphones accounted for 32% of the Canadian market in Q3 2019, down from 38.8% a year ago. Samsung is not the only OEM to have lost market share over this period, with both LG and Huawei also suffering losses.

Apple and Samsung hold nearly 90% of the Canadian market combined

Samsung and Apple are the biggest players in Canada by a long shot. Apple’s market share in Q3 2019 stood at 56.5%, while Samsung accounted for 32% of the market. The third spot on the podium goes to LG with a mere 3.1% market share, down from 4.7% a year ago. Google managed to bump its market share up to 1.9% from 0.3% in Q3 2018, while Huawei’s share has dropped from 4.6% to a dismal 1.6%.

Counterpoint Research reveals that affordable high-end and premium smartphones are more popular in Canada than low and mid-range alternatives. 75% of smartphone sales in Canada have been for smartphones with a price tag above $400, and the source claims that the iPhone 11 series has had a great contribution to Apple’s success.

The Galaxy Fold is unlikely to make a difference for Samsung’s Q4 tally

Samsung has one more ace up its sleeve, and that is the Galaxy Fold which is set to launch in Canada on December 6 for $2,600 CAD.

However, even if Canadians would be willing to buy the premium device in droves, it will launch in limited quantities much like in every other region, and it’s probably not going to make much of a difference for Samsung’s market share in Canada by the end of the fourth quarter.

Galaxy A50 gets new update including December 2019 security patch

Neither Google nor Samsung has detailed the December 2019 security patch, but the Galaxy A50 has beaten all the other models to the punch as it is now receiving a new update in Israel, which includes the latest security fixes. The December 2019 security patch is included in the latest Android 10 beta, but this is the first time that it reaches a Galaxy smartphone on a live build.

The new update targeting the Galaxy A50 carries version number A505FDDU3ASKA, which means that it should also technically include new features along with improved security. As yet, we are unable to confirm what these new features might be, but if you have received the update on your Galaxy A50 and you’ve noticed any new additions, feel free to let us know in the comment section below. Although the rollout is limited to Israel at present, it should expand into more regions sooner rather than later.

As usual, the update is accompanied by a notification which you can tap to begin the update process. Alternatively, you can head down to our firmware page, download the firmware manually, and install it on your device using your computer. Or you can launch the Settings app on your Galaxy A50, go to Software update and tap Download and install to try and trigger the update process manually.

Bluetooth S Pen for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite confirmed by the FCC

For a device that’s rumored to be launching in December, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite (SM-N770) has made surprisingly few unofficial appearances ever since we exclusively revealed such a device is in the works. The Galaxy S10 Lite, the other flagship spin-off Samsung is making, is also rumored for a December launch and has been considerably less shy.

We have seen an online benchmark, confirmation on its battery size, and even an FCC certification for the Galaxy S10 Lite while the Note 10 Lite continues to play hide and seek, but things may be changing soon. On November 26, the FCC certified the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s S Pen, confirming at least one feature for the phone.

Bluetooth-enabled S Pen to accompany the Galaxy Note 10 Lite

The FCC documents reveal that the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will have a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen like the one seen on the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Note 10. That shouldn’t be surprising, and we would be more interested to learn whether it will also have a gyroscope built-in to enable air gestures (called Air actions) like the Galaxy Note 10 S Pen. Given the Lite moniker, Samsung could bundle a Bluetooth-only S Pen with the device, although that is just speculation at this time.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s spec sheet is rather unknown at this time, although we can confirm it will have 128GB of internal storage. The handset hasn’t popped up on any online benchmarks yet, and it’s possible it might just be a Galaxy S10 Lite, which is supposed to be a rebranded Galaxy A91 for some markets, with an S Pen. It could also be a Galaxy A81 with an S Pen, as suggested by the discovery of a mysterious new device that could be a mashup of the Galaxy A and Galaxy Note series.

Unfortunately, no concrete information is available right now, but if the Galaxy Note 10 Lite is slated for a December launch, we should see more details about the device show up soon.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 not getting Bixby Routines with Android 10?

Samsung started rolling out the Android 10 beta for the Galaxy S9/S9+ today and for the Note 9 last week in select markets. Predictably, the update brings many of the new features that Samsung debuted on its newer devices launched this year, like Night mode for the front-facing camera. There is, however, one nifty little feature that is absent from the Android 10 beta for last year’s flagships.

The current beta releases for both the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 are missing Bixby Routines. For those unaware, Bixby Routines is Samsung’s version of IFTTT and the popular Android app Tasker that helps users automate many repetitive and mundane tasks based on pre-set conditions (a few good examples of which can be found here). The feature made its debut on the Galaxy S10 and was later seen on a few other Galaxy devices, including mid-range phones like the Galaxy A50.

We currently don’t know if this is going to be ‘fixed’ in the next beta update or whether Samsung has decided not to bring Bixby Routines to previous flagships at all. If it’s the latter, then it is safe to assume the feature will not be available for last year’s mid-range and budget devices, either. Considering this is not a hardware-dependent feature, there is some room to be optimistic.

Ironically, among all the Bixby-related functions, Bixby Routines is perhaps the most useful feature, one that many find genuinely helpful. For a company that is trying to force its customers to use Bixby, it would be a strange decision not to offer the one feature that many customers might actually use. Hopefully, the Korean company will bring Bixby Routines to the Galaxy S9/S9+, Note 9, and all other older devices by the time the stable version of One UI 2.0 starts rolling out.

Galaxy S9 and Note 9 get Night mode for telephoto and front camera on Android 10

Samsung is running an Android 10 beta program for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 right now. Since these devices were launched last year, they’re getting new features that are a part of Android 10 and One UI 2.0 and some features that were available on this year’s flagships even on Android Pie.

Among the latter is a Night mode for the front camera and for the telephoto rear camera, which debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 and later came to the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Fold via a software update. On Android 10, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 owners can take brighter and more detailed photos with the front camera and the telephoto camera in dark conditions with the dedicated Night mode.

As you can see in the samples below, Night mode makes a noticeable difference. These samples were taken on a Galaxy S10, but you can expect similar results on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 as their cameras aren’t different from the Galaxy S10 series. Well, the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 do have a wider aperture for the front camera than the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Note 10 series, and that means the end result should be better when you use Night mode to take a selfie.
