Samsung may implement an iris scanner in its mid-range smartphones

On Tuesday, Samsung unveiled its first smartphone to feature an iris scanner, the Galaxy Note 7, and now it has been revealed that DJ Koh, President of Samsung’s Mobile Division, is hoping to bring the technology to the firm’s mid-range lineup once costs are more controllable. Although, we don’t expect that to happen any time soon, seeing as it’s going to take at least a year’s worth of solid sales to cover the R&D costs that went into developing the iris scanning system.

“Through continued cost cutting, iris scanning can trickle down to mid-end models,” he added. “There is a view that Android is weak in security compared to its competitor and we want to expand software security that can overcome this image,” said DJ Koh during in an interview that was conducted on the sidelines of the Unpacked event in New York where the South Korean company took the wraps off the Galaxy Note 7.

Canadian Galaxy Note 7 pre-orders to include free Level Box Pro Bluetooth speaker or Gear Fit 2

The Galaxy Note 7 is a pricey smartphone, and Samsung and carriers are sweetening the deal for those who pre-order the device by offering freebies like a Gear Fit 2, a 256GB microSD card, and even a year’s worth of Netflix. In Canada, Samsung is switching things up a bit and is offering its Level Box Pro wireless Bluetooth speaker as one of the gifts that consumers can choose from.

The other freebie remains the Gear Fit 2, in both small and large sizes as desired by the consumer. Most carriers in the country are offering the same deal and will simply redirect pre-order customers to Samsung’s official website for the redemption of the free gift (Rogers will also throw in a free 64GB microSD card while supplies last). The phone itself is available in silver, black and blue in the country, and will go on sale on August 19th, the same day as the US.

The Galaxy Note 7 features a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED Edge display, a Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable internal storage, a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, a 3,500 mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging support, an iris scanner (in addition to a fingerprint sensor), and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The phablet is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance; the S Pen is water resistant as well and comes with new features like word translation and the ability to create GIFs from videos.

Check out our Galaxy Note 7 hands-on to get an early idea of what Samsung’s latest flagship brings to the table.

Sam’s Club probably has the best Galaxy Note 7 pre-order deal in the US

The Galaxy Note 7 is now available for pre-order from Samsung’s carrier and retail partners in the United States. Customers can take their pick and they might want to take a look at the Galaxy Note 7 pre-order deal that Sam’s Club is offering before making their decision. The freebies are mostly the same across all carrier and retail partners but Sam’s Club is taking things up a notch by offering a $150 gift card with every pre-order of the Galaxy Note 7.

A gift card is as good as cash because you can immediately use it to purchase stuff up to the value mentioned on the card. So not only can customers who pre-order the Galaxy Note 7 choose whether they want a free Gear Fit 2 or 256GB microSD card but they will also get a $150 gift card from Sam’s Club on top of that. While the Gear Fit 2 or microSD card will take weeks to arrive as they have to be processed through Samsung Promotions, the $150 gift card will be immediately handed over to customers. Sam’s Club offers carrier versions of the Galaxy Note 7 for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular and the $150 gift card will be limited to one per line.

The retailer is currently taking reservations for the handset. Customers can select their carrier version of the Galaxy Note 7 now as well as their store location. They can then go to the store between August 19-28 to pay for it and pick up their gift card which can be used to purchase anything that’s offered by the retailer. A Sam’s Club membership is required to take advantage of this promotion.

Samsung makes web browsing on the Gear VR more immersive

Samsung unveiled the new Gear VR headset alongside the Galaxy Note 7 yesterday. The new headset features incremental updates when compared to its predecessor but all of them contribute to providing a better user experience. Samsung has also been working to improve the web browsing experience in virtual reality. It has partnered with cloud graphics company OTOY to create a new online browsing experience for the Samsung Internet app for Gear VR.

“Today’s announcement transforms VR browsing for both people and brands, harnessing the visual fidelity of OTOY’s VR technology and the incredible quality of the Samsung Gear VR to deliver a beautiful, customized experience,” said Jules Urbach who is the founder and CEO of OTOY.

This new experience will enable users browsing the internet on Gear VR to customize their VR environment so that VR environments appear around the website or the web page. This makes for a more immersive VR experience while leaning on high-quality 360-degree stereo cubemaps rendered in OTOY’s ORBX format. This improved browsing experience is available now in the latest version of the Samsung Internet app for Gear VR. It provides users with multiple VR scenes to choose from ranging from calm and composed to weird and wonderful. Branded experiences will be coming soon as Samsung and OTOY are working with partners who want to build their brand through VR browsing.

Hiya powers caller ID and spam detection in the Galaxy Note 7′s dialer app

Samsung included caller ID and spam detection functionality in the Galaxy S7′s dialer app and it’s doing the same for the Galaxy Note 7. Hiya, a leading provider of this service, is going to power caller ID, spam detection and business search services in the new flagship’s dialer app. Hiya tracks more than 1.5 billion numbers globally so it’s able to provide a discreet experience and help owners identify unknown callers to protect them against phone spam and scams.

Hiya is currently providing this service for the Galaxy S7 in 16 countries across the globe and support is now being expanded to an additional 12 countries. The improved experience will be offered to both Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7 customers. Instant caller ID will help users easily make a decision about whether or not they want to pick up a call from an unknown number. It will also feature a spam button which lets users report spam numbers. Hiya features a global database of local business information as well all of which is accessible through the handset’s stock dialer app. All Galaxy Note 7 variants in supported countries other than the United States will have Hiya in the stock dialer app but in the United States this useful functionality is limited to the T-Mobile variant.

Supported countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Galaxy Note 7 unboxing video from T-Mobile features waterslides and lots of water

There will be countless Galaxy Note 7 unboxing videos on YouTube that you can watch again and again while you wait for your unit to arrive but there won’t be many like the one T-Mobile has made. Samsung brought back water resistance to its Galaxy S series with the Galaxy S7 and T-Mobile drove the point home by unboxing the Galaxy S7 underwater. The Galaxy Note 7 is also water resistant and even the S Pen can hold its own against the element so T-Mobile has stuck with the trend and has actually unboxed the Galaxy Note 7 on a waterslide.

We see T-Mobile’s resident “product dude” Des at the Wild Ways water park as he goes down the waterslide and barely holds on to the phone while he shows off the accessories that are included in the box. As you can imagine the accessories all fly out of his hands as he makes his way down the waterslide. The video walks us through some of the best features of the Galaxy Note 7 such as its brilliant Quad HD display with HDR playback support, iris scanner, 64 gigs of expandable internal memory, USB Type-C port and more. It even shows us the amazing low light performance of the handset’s 12-megapixel rear camera. This is probably the most entertaining Galaxy Note 7 unboxing video that you will see and I do suggest that you check it out.

Samsung Rewards program gives you free money for using Samsung Pay

Samsung today released an update for Samsung Pay which adds support for the rumored Samsung Rewards program. The update is part of Samsung’s continuous push to provide more value to users who have chosen its mobile payment service to make payments on the go. Samsung Pay now supports Samsung Reward cards, basically, these cards will be an incentive for people who use the company’s mobile payments service to continue using it. With this latest update Samsung Pay can also send users location-based offers from participating merchants.

Samsung Pay’s ease of use has played a major part in quickly transforming it into one of the most widely used and accepted mobile payment services available now. Samsung regularly pushes the service by offering promotions and deals. The company has also been rapidly rolling out Samsung Pay in additional markets across the globe to get the first-mover advantage. Users will find Samsung Reward cards being automatically added to their Samsung Pay account after participating in qualifying competitions. The cards will have a set dollar value which is as good as real money because users will be able to use the card balance to pay for purchases at any merchant where both Visa debit and Samsung Pay is accepted. One participating promotion is already live and is offering users a $20 Rewards card.

Samsung said to be in talks to buy auto components manufacturing arm from Fiat

Samsung has been investing in smart automobiles segment from the past few months. It recently started collaborating with German car makers to develop smart brains for futuristic automobiles and also launched Samsung Connect Auto. Now, the company is said to be in talks to buy an auto components manufacturing brand.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung is said to be in talks to acquire Magneti Marelli, a subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that specializes in developing and manufacturing high-end automotive parts. The South Korean electronics giant is said to be interested in Magneti Marelli’s lighting, entertainment and telematics capabilities.

The deal is reportedly worth $3 billion, and if it’s true, it would be Samsung’s biggest acquisition outside of South Korea. This shows that Samsung is quite serious about smart cars. The company even made a separate race track to test its autonomous cars. It collaborated with SAP and SEAT to develop future projects for connected cars.

Galaxy Note 7 has a blue light filter option built into the display settings

Blue light isn’t the best kind of light for the human eye, and the blue light from electronic displays is even worse. With the smartphone such an important part of our lives, our eyes are being exposed to a lot of unnecessary blue light in this day and age. OLED displays inherently emit less blue light than LCD displays, but not so less as to not strain our eyes with continued usage, especially at night when it can also induce sleeplessness. With the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung wants you to be able to control the amount of blue light you’re exposed to when using the device, as the company has built in a blue light filter option in the display settings.

Samsung seems to have been inspired by Android 7.0 Nougat, which will introduce a blue light filter to stock Android; this means there’s one less feature we will have to look forward to whenever the company brings the upcoming version of Android to the Note 7 and existing devices. Samsung has also added a toggle for the filter in the quick settings panel for easy access. Basically, this means you won’t have to download a third-party blue light filter app if you buy the Note 7, although the phone’s built-in setting won’t be as customizable as those third-party apps.

Blue light isn’t completely bad, and everyone has to get enough of it in addition to the reds and the greens to have their eyes functional properly. But overexposure can cause eye strain and make it hard for you fall asleep at night, and an out-of-the-box option to reduce blue light is just another minor yet important feature that Samsung has added to its latest flagship smartphone.

Verizon Wireless unboxes the Galaxy Note 7 in the most entertaining way possible

Verizon Wireless has taken to its official YouTube channel to share a short unboxing video of the recently-announced Galaxy Note 7. In the clip, a doodle is sketched out and brought to life to demonstrate many of the handset’s new features, including its Always On Display, iris scanner and enhanced S-Pen. We also get to see the device from a plethora of different angles, which really highlights the perfectly symmetrical design that we noted in our hands-on coverage.

Power Saving Mode on the Galaxy Note 7 allows you to scale down the screen resolution

Samsung has developed a new Power Saving Mode for its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, which enables users to adjust the resolution of their display in order to preserve battery life. The South Korean firm claims that this new technology, when used in the right circumstances, can generate around 35 hours more juice from a full charge. It’s worth noting, however, that in order to achieve this number, you will also have to limit the maximum screen brightness, restrict device performance and prevent background network usage, but that’s a small price to pay for an extra day’s worth of battery.

Power Saving Mode is now organized into three tiers — Off, Mid, and Max. As the name suggests, when the handset is operating in Off Mode, the system is not mediating the amount of power that’s used to carry out standard tasks. When you turn the dial up to Mid, you’ll notice the resolution drop down from Quad HD to FHD 1080p. Performance is also dialed down, which means that multitasking and other intensive tasks won’t work as well as they did before. Activating the Max setting scales down the resolution to HD (720p), shuts off all network usage and disables animations. CPU speed is also reduced to a minimum.

What’s neat about the new Power Saving Mode is that it’s extremely flexible. What I mean by this, is that users have the facility to create their own preset. So, for example, if they select Max Power Saving Mode, but don’t want to sacrifice background network usage, they can choose to keep it enabled. This will, of course, affect the amount of battery life that the service is able to preserve. However, operating on an HD 720p display resolution with a lower CPU speed should still cut down power consumption by around 50%.

DSC_0465 DSC_0470 DSC_0483

Unfortunately, it’s too early to tell how reliable this new feature is, but stay tuned for our full review of the Galaxy Note 7 later this month where we’ll be discussing it in even greater detail. In the meantime, be sure to check out our hands-on coverage to get a feel for the device.

Samsung Z2 shows up at Galaxy Note 7 launch in Africa

We have known for some time that the Samsung Z2 exists, but the third commercial Tizen handset hasn’t made it to market just yet. That is expected to change soon, what with a leaked video showing the Z2 in action and the Z3 just two months shy of being a year old, and it seems someone at Samsung decided to bring a retail unit of the Z2 along for the ride at the Galaxy Note 7′s launch in Africa.

The Samsung Z2 is set to be the first Tizen smartphone in Africa, and in terms of specifications, the Z2 unsurprisingly sits somewhere between the Z1 and the Z3. It has a 4-inch display and 1GB of RAM; by the looks of it the Z2 is one fat device, with a design similar to the previous two Tizen phones. The Z2 will also be launching in India, where it will come with Samsung’s My Money Transfer app for money transfer between different banks, as we had exclusively reported. The Z2 will also be the first Tizen device to support 4G connectivity.

The Z2 that was seen at the event seems to be the Indian version, as it was preloaded with local apps like Jabong, Indiatimes and OLX. Check out the device in the images below, and let us know what you think of Samsung’s newest Tizen handset.
