Gear S2 iOS beta program has finally begun

Samsung said late last year that it would bring iOS support to Gear S2 by mid-January 2016. That obviously did not happen and we have all been waiting for a very long time for the Gear S2 to finally become compatible with the iPhone. Those who own Samsung’s first circular smartwatch will be delighted to know that the Gear S2 iOS beta program has finally begun.

Samsung has actually launched this beta program for both the Gear S2 and the Gear Fit 2, its new fitness and activity tracker, which will also be compatible with iOS devices. Participation in the program is voluntary and Samsung will use the feedback from participants to further improve the Gear Manager app for iOS.

The beta program has started today and will through to September 19. Even cellular models of the Gear S2 are supported. You must have an iPhone running iOS 8.4 or later to take part in this beta program. To participate, head over to the beta signup page and fill in your details after which you will be provided instructions on how to install the app and pair the Gear S2 or Gear Fit 2 to your iPhone. This is now a big indication that iOS support for the Gear S2 is in final stages of completion and it’s only a matter of time before it’s rolled out to the public.

McAfee VirusScan comes pre-installed on the Samsung Z2

Samsung launched its new Tizen-powered smartphone just yesterday. To assure Samsung Z2 owners of security, Samsung has pre-installed McAfee VirusScan from Intel on the device. Tizen already has many security features at the operating system level to protect users against malware and other threats, additional security at the software level is always welcome.

Intel Security has confirmed that the Samsung Z2 comes pre-installed with the McAfee VirusScan app. This anti-malware solution already helps secure millions of Android devices against malware and it will now do the needful on Samsung’s latest Tizen smartphone. In an era when new mobile malware grows by leaps and bounds every quarter and there are more than 305 new threats every second as mentioned in a report by McAfee labs, it’s important to have systems in place that do their best to protect you and your data on the mobile device. The McAfee VirusScan protection is also available to new customers of the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 explodes while charging using a USB Type-C converter

Samsung is in the process to ship the Galaxy Note 7 to its customers who pre-ordered the device, but we already have a case of an exploded device. A brand new Galaxy Note 7 blew up in China and turned into a mess while charging with a microUSB to USB Type-C converter.

We are not sure as to whether the owner of this device used a bundled microUSB to USB Type-C converter, but we recommend everyone to use the bundled Samsung wall charger to charge the device. Hopefully, the issue isn’t widespread as it would put a lot of customers in danger.

Samsung’s shipping the Galaxy Note 7 in Germany ahead of schedule

When Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Note 7 in Germany, it revealed that it would start shipping pre-orders of the handset on Tuesday, August 30, which is three days before its official launch in bricks-and-mortar stores. However, it appears that the firm has already started distributing handsets to consumers in the region as several readers of All About Samsung have reached out to the publication with proof that their device has arrived in the post.

All of the customers who have already received their Galaxy Note 7 in Germany have two things in common: 1) They all opted for the Black Onyx model with 64GB of storage, 2) They selected the Gear VR as their free gift. What’s a little strange about this early shipment is that it’s coming directly from Samsung’s warehouse in the Netherlands, and the firm, unlike T-Mobile and Verizon, doesn’t have a habit of shipping out handsets before their intended release date.

Samsung opens Galaxy Note 7 pop-up stores in Amsterdam and Rotterdam

Samsung has opened two pop-up stores in the Netherlands — one in Amsterdam, and the other in Rotterdam — to give potential customers a taste of what its recently-announced flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, has to offer before its delayed launch in bricks-and-mortar stores on Friday, September 9.

Those who attend the pop-up stores will also have an opportunity to try out the brand new edition of the Gear VR in a rollercoaster simulator that looks like it’s guaranteed to make you vomit. It’s called Icarus and is essentially just a chair that rotates 360-degrees in sync to the video playing on the headset.

After playing around with the Galaxy Note 7, atendees will be given the option to pre-order the handset. If they choose to do so, they’ll have the facility to pick it up from the pop-up store first thing in the morning on September 9, which saves them the hassle of having to wait at home all day for the package to arrive.

More specs of Samsung’s next high-end flip phone revealed

We have known for a couple of months now that Samsung is developing a new high-end flip phone codenamed “Veyron.” It’s going to be the successor of the SM-2016 high-end clamshell phone that was released in China last year. The SM-W2017 was spotted on Geekbench a couple of days ago and that revealed some specifications of the handset. It has now made a stop at AnTuTu benchmark where more specs have been revealed.

Aside from its 4.2-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display, the AnTuTu benchmark result shows that it’s powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It also features a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. It could be the same camera setup you find in the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy Note 7. The handset will be powered by Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. These specs make it clear that the SM-W2017 is certainly going to be a flagship in its own right but given that there’s isn’t a big enough market for flip phones outside of China, it will most likely be exclusive to the People’s Republic.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Samsung Cloud storage service

Samsung announced the launch of a new cloud storage service called Samsung Cloud alongside the Galaxy Note 7 earlier this month. It makes switching to a new phone or restoring an older device very easy. All Galaxy Note 7 owners get 15GB of storage for free. This is different from the Samsung Cloud Together app that’s great for managing all cloud storage services and locking secure images on your device.

Samsung Cloud provides users with a backup and restoration option that works without needing any USB cables. It works continuously to back up native apps like Notes, Contacts and Calendar as well as some third-party applications. Users can restore all of the backups on a new device and basically pick up right where they left off on a new phone. If Auto Backup for Messages is enabled on one smartphone users can restore the backed-up messages later from Samsung Cloud on another device that’s sharing the same Samsung Account.

The service has also been designed to back up the home screen and user settings. Even if a user loses their old device all of their shortcuts and layout settings can be easily restored. When Auto Backup is enabled the handset will automatically upload information to Samsung Cloud over Wi-Fi once every 24 hours provided that the handset’s screen is off and it has been connected to a power source for at least an hour.

It’s also possible to sync photos and videos with Samsung Cloud. When photo syncing is activated all pictures taken recently will be uploaded and shared across all connected devices as long as the device is connected to Wi-Fi or a data network. Synced photos and videos will be accessible via the Gallery app and will be updated to match the albums of the synced device. It’s also possible to sync selected albums if users do not want to share all images and videos across all of their devices.

Even though Samsung Cloud was launched alongside the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is bringing it to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge as well. Updated are gradually being rolled out for both handsets which bring Samsung Cloud.

Galaxy Note 7 supply shortage should be temporary, company says

The Galaxy Note 7 is experiencing supply difficulties.

That is a statement that it seems unusual to say, considering that the Galaxy Note lineup hasn’t had this type of unprecedented success since its inception in 2011. Between the Galaxy Note series and the Galaxy S lineup, it’s been obvious which one sells the best — but Samsung’s latest feature-packed phablet with its intelligent S Pen is making waves. First, there’s the “outstanding” pre-orders in Canada (where the Galaxy Note 7 costs as much as $1,049.99); then, there are the doubling pre-orders in Korea (which has, no doubt, made Samsung all smiles these days).

Though there has been little if any official word on Galaxy Note 7 pre-orders in the US, I’ve heard a number of testimonies from T-Mobile customers in particular that Galaxy Note 7s are in short supply at some retail stores. With car accidents, fights, and disgruntled customers being some of the normal happenings for the US pre-order launch, perhaps we’d do well to call the Galaxy Note 7 “the Pokemon Go of smartphones” (though it is my wish that we do not).  Blue Coral Galaxy Note 7s, in particular, are out of stock, with only Black Onyx and Silver Titanium colors remaining for many consumers — that is, unless they’d rather wait another 4-6 weeks.

A new report out of Reuters says that huge, unprecedented Galaxy Note 7 demand is outstripping supply (which explains the rising numbers of unfortunate countries that are facing delays, such as The Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine, and Malaysia (the victim of launch rescheduling), to name a few. The fear is, as it was in the days of the Galaxy S6 edge shortage in 2015, that Samsung will lose business if it does not fix the supply issue and appease customers.

And yet, it seems that Samsung isn’t having a problem with curved display production (which was the issue last year); instead, Samsung is simply seeing an overwhelming order of Galaxy Note 7 phablets that has never happened in Note series history. The issue pertains to boosting production, which Samsung has said it’s doing to meet the growing demand. The Galaxy Note 7 supply shortage should be temporary.

Analysts have said that Samsung could ship as many as 12 million Galaxy Note 7 phablets this year, but Reuters now says that the original number could go as high as 15 million.

Why is this demand so high? because Samsung has discovered what consumers want in the next-generation Galaxy Note. 2016 isn’t over yet, but Galaxy Note fans (and Samsung) can take cues from Lil’ Wayne, pour the champagne and propose a toast.

Samsung reportedly increasing OLED production ahead of curved iPhone release in 2017

Samsung has reportedly started installing new production equipment at a plant in Korea as it gears up production to supply OLED displays to Apple. Its rival has never before used an OLED display for the iPhone and it’s expected to break with tradition in 2017. A recent report from Nikkei Asian Review suggested that Apple will launch three iPhones next year one of which is going to be a premium handset with a 5.5-inch or larger display that’s curved on two sides much like Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung has long been rumored to be one of the major OLED suppliers, if not the only, for Apple. Chosun Biz reports that the company is now installing new equipment at its A3 OLED plant in South Chungcheong province in order to increase OLED production. Samsung currently produces around 40,000 mother glasses per month which are good for 9 million 5-inch display panels. It’s expected that with production being increased this figure could climb to 120,000 mother glasses for 30 million panels. The company uses OLED displays in its smartphones as well so it certainly needs to increase production capacity to make sure that its demand is also met and it can make money by selling its superior displays to Apple as well.

Digital Europe awards UHD certification to Samsung’s entire 2016 SUHD TV lineup

Earlier today, Samsung revealed that all of its 2016 SUHD TVs have been granted Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV certification from Digital Europe, which is one of the most influential and reputable organizations representing the digital technology industry in the continent.

Achieving certification from Digital Europe is no easy task, so Samsung should definitely consider this as an achievement as only the best and most reliable Ultra High Definition TVs on the market are entitled to bear the European UHD TV and Consumer Technology Association (CTA) labels.

Having the CTA branding on the box of the product will separate Samsung’s SUHD TVs from the competition as it will provide customers with additional confidence that they’re spending their money on a reliable piece of technology, and not something that didn’t undergo thorough quality testing before it hit the shelves.

The European UHD TV and CTA labels will be on display on Samsung’s SUHD TVs at this year’s IFA exhibition in Berlin, Germany.
