Galaxy Note 10 series starts getting September 2021 security update in Korea

Over the past couple of weeks, Samsung has released the September 2021 security update to various high-end and mid-range Galaxy smartphones. The company has now released its latest security patch to the Galaxy Note 10 series as well, and the update has started rolling out in Samsung’s home market.

The Galaxy Note 10 5G and the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G have started getting a new update in South Korea. It has firmware version N971NKSU2FUH7, and it includes the September 2021 security patch. Samsung is yet to reveal the vulnerabilities it has fixed with the September security patch, but we expect that information to be published over the next couple of weeks. The new update could also include general bug fixes and device stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy Note 10 5G or Galaxy Note 10+ 5G user in South Korea, you might have already received a notification of the update. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Note 10 series two years ago with Android 9 Pie-based One UI onboard. The devices in the lineup received the Android 10-based One UI 2 update in late 2019 and the Android 11-based One UI 3 update in late 2020.

Original Galaxy Fold gets One UI 3.1.1 update with excellent new features

For the first time ever, Samsung is keeping a version of One UI exclusive to a specific smartphone lineup. One UI 3.1.1 is purely about features that make the experience of using Samsung’s foldable phones better, particularly the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. One UI 3.1.1 debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 and has already been released for the first Galaxy Z Flip, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. It is now arriving on the original Galaxy Fold.

With One UI 3.1.1, Samsung has introduced a lot of features that let you make better use of the foldable form factor. Perhaps the most useful is the new Taskbar, which is a persistent shortcut to your favorite apps on the right side of the screen. Then there’s Drag & Split, which lets you open a new URL in split-screen mode instead of opening it in a new tab in the same browser window.

Rotate All Apps lets you force all apps to rotate to landscape orientation, while Custom Aspect Ratio allows you to set a custom aspect ratio for any ap (for example, you can force Instagram to use the full foldable display real estate, which it doesn’t do natively). Finally, there’s the improvements to Multi-Active Window. When using three apps side-by-side, you now get options to readjust the height and width of opened apps.

Check out the video below showcasing the new features. Note that not all One UI 3.1.1 features are available for the Galaxy Fold.

The One UI 3.1.1 update also brings with it a Bedtime mode toggle in the notification shade, and it’s bundled with the September 2021 security patch. It is currently rolling out for both the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Fold 5G in Korea and some parts of Europe, but you can be sure availability will expand to more markets in the coming days. As usual, the latest update can be downloaded from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu or from our firmware archive.

With the Note series gone, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should embrace the S Pen

After a successful decade on the market, the Galaxy Note series took a backseat this year when Samsung decided not to release the Galaxy Note 22 lineup at Unpacked. There will be no Galaxy Note 22, and at this point, the future of the series is in jeopardy. It may have been retired for good, seeing how the company broke the S Pen’s exclusivity by pairing it with more smartphone models that have never had S Pen support before. And with the Galaxy Note series officially shelved, I believe it’s time for the next Galaxy S Ultra model to fully commit to the S Pen and become the spiritual successor to the Note family.

Samsung might never release a Galaxy Note ever again, and although this is heartbreaking for thousands of fans of the series, the good news is that the Galaxy Note’s retirement doesn’t have to bring the end of the S Pen. On the contrary. Much like I suspected a little over a year ago, the demise of the Galaxy Note series could lead to the proliferation of the S Pen, among other benefits. And indeed, Samsung has already brought the S Pen to more devices than ever before. The Galaxy S21 Ultra was the first in its series to support the S Pen, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the company’s first foldable device to work with the iconic input device.

Nevertheless, slapping a digitizer on a screen and adding an optional S Pen case to an existing smartphone model might not be enough to preserve the spirit of the Galaxy Note family in the long run. And because of this, I’m starting to believe more and more that the Galaxy S22 Ultra should fill this gap and become a spiritual Note successor. Without a proper Galaxy Note in sight, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should fully embrace the S Pen and have a dedicated holster for this accessory.

Wouldn’t this compromise the Galaxy S22 Ultra?

Purely on paper, maybe so. But realistically, I don’t believe it would. The only hardware sacrifice the Galaxy S22 Ultra would make in favor of a dedicated S Pen slot is a slightly smaller battery. And while it might sound outrageous at first for the Galaxy S22 Ultra to have a smaller battery, in reality, it simply wouldn’t make that much of a difference regardless if you like the S Pen or not.

I just find it difficult to believe that a Galaxy S fan with good intentions at heart would ever deny a brand-new outstanding model just because it has a battery that’s ~100mAh smaller than it was a year before. Especially in an era where advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes ensure better energy efficiency almost every year.

And I’m not trying to imply that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will make for a better Note than the Galaxy Note 22 itself would have. We just don’t know this because neither phone is official. However, what I am suggesting is that if the Galaxy Note series is gone for good and won’t come back in H2 2022, then the next best step to ensure the longevity of the S Pen would be for the Galaxy S22 Ultra to embrace the role of a spiritual Note successor and adopt a dedicated S Pen slot.

And yes, I’m aware that Galaxy S22 Ultra “ultra fans” would probably complain because of this change — in my opinion, for no good reason other than a measly ~100mAh loss in battery capacity. But on the other hand, a Galaxy S22 Ultra with a dedicated S Pen holster would likely become the device of choice for almost every Galaxy Note fan who might be feeling left out after the August 2021 Galaxy Unpacked event.

What do you think, assuming that Samsung has retired the Note series for good? Would you prefer the S Pen to continue existing as an optional accessory and an afterthought for a few phones? Or should the Galaxy S22 Ultra fill the shoes of a proper Note successor and come with a dedicated S Pen slot and an S Pen in the box?

Global Goals gets updated with Android 12 support and UI improvements

Samsung is updating another one of its apps in anticipation of Android 12. Global Goals is now getting a 26.31MB update to version 2.5.02.4. Aside from adding Android 12 support, the new Global Goals update also claims to bring stability and UI improvements, along with unspecified changes for India.

The “UI improvements” mentioned in the changelog must be minor because we couldn’t find any obvious differences in the UI following the update. Stability improvements are also under the hood, and it’s unclear what the “India specific changes” are. Once again, they’re not obvious, and the changelog is stingy with details.

Regardless, the purpose of Global Goals is the same as before: “to eliminate hunger, fight inequality, and clean up the planet.” The initiative was launched by the United Nations in 2015. It aims to complete its goals and change the world for the better by the year 2030.

With Global Goals, Galaxy smartphone and tablet users can support the cause by allowing ads when the phone/tablet is plugged in for a charge. Samsung customers can also choose what causes to support directly by picking one or more from a list of seventeen and donating money through the app.

If you have Global Goals on your Samsung mobile device and you’re preparing for One UI 4.0 and Android 12, you should now be able to download the latest update from the Galaxy Store or the Google Play Store.

Unlocked Galaxy S21 series in US starts getting September security patch

The September 2021 security patch is reaching more Galaxy S21 variants around the world. It wasn’t long ago when the update debuted for the Galaxy S21 series in Europe, and now, the September 2021 security patch is hitting the airwaves for the unlocked models in the USA.

Galaxy S21 owners in the USA can identify the new update by firmware version G99xU1UES4AUH9. The firmware number indicates this should be a regular security patch with no new additions or improvements to One UI. But if you’re eager for new features, stay tuned for the One UI 4.0 beta program. It was confirmed to arrive for the unlocked Galaxy S21 series in the USA “soon,” and it will also be released for S21 variants offered by Sprint and T-Mobile.

As for the September security patch, it is now rolling out over the air to unlocked Galaxy S21 owners in the USA and can be acquired from the Settings app on your phone by navigating to Software updates and tapping Download and install.

If you want to skip the wait and take matters into your own hands, you can head over to our firmware database, download the new firmware update for your specific Galaxy S21 model, and install it manually using a Windows PC.

Verizon wants Exynos version of the Galaxy S22, but do you?

Samsung could divide the Snapdragon and Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 variants unlike it did in previous years. For the US market, for example, a new rumor suggests that every Galaxy S22 variant will be powered by the Snapdragon 898 SoC, except for one.

While the Galaxy S22 series will reportedly employ the Snapdragon 898 chipset in the US, Verizon may have fixed its eyes on the Exynos 2200 chipset instead. According to @FrontTron, citing Clien, Verizon has requested the Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 models from Samsung, and the two companies are now negotiating.

Why would Verizon want the international Galaxy S22 configuration?

Verizon might prefer the Exynos 2200 chipset over the Snapdragon 898 solution because it might be looking for a better deal with Samsung, or it might want to avoid any supply constraints that could be caused by the global semiconductor shortage and the higher demand for Qualcomm’s solution. Or perhaps the Exynos 2200 will be superior to the Snapdragon 898, and Verizon wants to offer the better alternative come January 2022.

Whatever the case may be, Samsung fans don’t usually ask for Exynos chipsets inside their flagship phones. It’s usually the other way around, which is why customers in India are surprised that they might finally be getting the Snapdragon version next year. However, customers in the USA might not want to give up on the tried and tested Snapdragon family of chipsets in favor of an Exynos SoC, so Verizon customers might not be too happy if this rumor comes to pass.

Thankfully, even if Samsung and Verizon strike a deal around the Exynos-powered Galaxy S22 series, it’s not like every customer in the USA will be forced to buy this variant. The Snapdragon 898 Galaxy S22 model should still be sold by all other retail channels and network providers aside from Verizon. More importantly, we just don’t know yet if the Exynos 2200 will really be superior to the Snapdragon 898 SoC. The rumored AMD GPU might give it an edge, but time will tell.

As a Verizon customer and Samsung fan, would you be willing to give the Exynos 2200 SoC a chance, hoping that it’s going to be superior? Or would you prefer sticking with the tried and tested Qualcomm Snapdragon brand of mobile SoCs?

Indian customers will love the Galaxy S22 if latest rumor is true

As usual, the Galaxy S22 series is expected to feature an Exynos SoC in some regions and a chipset from Qualcomm in others. History tells us that the Exynos 2200 variant will go on sale in most markets, while the Snapdragon 898-powered models will be reserved for a few key regions such as the USA. However, Samsung might not follow the same strategy as before, and the Snapdragon variant could become available in more markets, including India.

Samsung is reportedly in the process of deciding which chipset goes inside the Galaxy S22 series in what regions. And according to @FrontTron citing Clien, the Snapdragon 898 SoC is “highly likely” to be used by the Galaxy S22 series in India.

This would be a first for the Indian market. So far, every Galaxy flagship released in India was powered by Exynos chipsets, but next year we might witness a big change in this philosophy.

Don’t get too hyped up over this possible outcome yet

Many Galaxy S flagship owners in Exynos regions have been asking for equal treatment for many years now. This is why, at first glance, the idea that the Galaxy S22 flagship series will introduce the Snapdragon 898 chipset in India sounds promising.

On the other hand, 2022 might be the year when Samsung’s in-house Exynos solution could be better than Qualcomm’s alternative. While both chipsets are expected to have similar CPU core configurations, the Exynos 2200 is likely to pack a superior AMD Radeon graphics chip, which has the potential of outperforming Qualcomm’s SoC. “Be careful what you wish for,” said the adage, and it could ring very true to Samsung Galaxy S fans in India come January.

On the other hand, neither the Exynos 2200 nor the Snapdragon 898 are official, and Samsung’s previous chipsets weren’t so bad in terms of graphics performance. Their biggest weakness compared to Snapdragon alternatives was power efficiency, and only time will tell which chipset will be superior in this regard next year. Not to mention that AMD doesn’t have much experience with mobile devices, so there are lots of variables to consider.

Best Samsung Phones in September 2021 – Picked by experts

Given the sheer number of devices that it releases every year, finding the best Samsung phones can often prove to be a challenge for most customers. It doesn’t matter if you want a flagship or a budget device. Samsung offers plenty of options for all price ranges.

To make it easier for you to find the one that best suits your needs, our expert reviewers have created this list of the best Samsung smartphones. We’ll explain precisely why a device has made it on to our list and provide you with links to their detailed reviews. This will help you cut through the noise and really find out what is the best Samsung phone.

Our Best Samsung Phone List For September 2021

Our list for September 2021 has a great mix of devices, helped by the launch of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable smartphones. We have also included some of the good Samsung phones in the mid-range and affordable categories that are currently available.

Best Samsung Phone – Spec monster: Galaxy S21 Ultra

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has big shoes to fill. It follows the Galaxy S20 Ultra which was Samsung’s everything and the kitchen sink phone. Last year’s flagship was packed to the gills with the best that Samsung had to offer. It’s a similar story for the Galaxy S21 Ultra as it remains the company’s undisputed spec monster.

Samsung’s latest high-end flagship features a 6.8-inch display with a 10Hz to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is capable of hitting the 120Hz refresh rate at the highest WQHD+ resolution. Depending on the market, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be available with an Exynos 2100 or Snapdragon 888 chipset. It’s paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage. No external expansion is possible as the device doesn’t have a microSD card slot.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra retains its predecessor’s 5,000mAh battery. It does get an updated camera setup which includes two telephoto (zoom) cameras capable of achieving 100x Space Zoom. It also gets a whole host of new software features that take full advantage of the camera setup’s capabilities.

There’s even support for the S Pen. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first non-Note Galaxy device to get the S Pen. However, one doesn’t ship with the device. You’ll need to buy it separately in addition to a case that lets you carry the S Pen because it doesn’t slide inside the smartphone.

Samsung has once again set the benchmark for the rest of the Android manufacturers. This handset will remain the best Galaxy phone to be released this year. No other Samsung handset due in 2021 will have the kind of specs that this does. Looking beyond what’s under the hood, the Galaxy S21 Ultra also has exceptional build quality and a great design.

Reasons to buy: Powerful cameras, great battery life, exceptional display and top-notch performance.

Who should buy: Loyal Samsung fans, mobile gaming enthusiasts, mobile photographers and vloggers.

Best Samsung Phone – Productivity: Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

There’s no question about it, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra tops our list as the best Samsung phone for productivity. Samsung has made a number of meaningful improvements to its latest flagship smartphone, particularly the S Pen upgrades. The S Pen latency has been dropped to 9ms in order to provide a more fluid and natural experience with the stylus.

The 6.9-inch Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also comes with the latest in smartphone technology as well as 5G support. It happens to be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate display.

This is actually the first time that a Samsung phone has had a variable refresh rate. The Galaxy Note 20’s display switches between 10Hz, 30Hz, 60Hz and 120Hz. It depends on whatever’s being shown on the screen. This is done to save power by not using the maximum refresh rate in circumstances where it’s not necessary. Pretty neat.

Samsung has also significantly improved the camera setup compared to its predecessor. There are several new software features and new camera modes that enable customers to get the most out of this $1,299 flagship. All of this makes the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra stand out as one of the top Samsung phones of 2021.

Reasons to buy: Best display on a smartphone, wireless DeX, gorgeous design, enhanced camera functionality and great battery life.

Who should buy: Customers who want the latest Samsung phones, power users, mobile gamers, vloggers and content creators.

Best Samsung Phone – Compact: Galaxy S20 FE

Samsung is out with a new Fan Edition model this year. The Galaxy S20 FE packs many of the best features of the Galaxy S20 series into a more compact package. It uses the same flagship-level chipsets, a 120Hz refresh rate display and a respectable 4,500mAh battery. Samsung has replaced the glass back with plastic and that’s actually a good thing.

The 6.5-inch flat display is great for those who don’t particularly like curved displays. The two 12-megapixel cameras offers similar results as the Galaxy S20+ and it even comes with an 8-megapixel telephoto camera that provides 3x lossless optical zoom. Samsung has also confirmed that it will receive three years of Android OS upgrades. For all of the amazing tech that it offers, the $699 price tag for the 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 FE makes it one of the best value Samsung phones to buy this year.

It’s a good move by the company to offer the Galaxy S20 FE. This enables it to compete against rivals that offer premium, near-flagship like devices for far less than what a traditional flagship would cost. The Galaxy S20 FE allows Samsung to go after those customers as well. That’s what makes it worthy of a place among the top rated Samsung phones of the year.

Reasons to buy: Great design, well-built, great performance, flat AMOLED display and three years of OS upgrades.

Who should buy: Customers who want a flagship-level phone for less, those who don’t want to be worried about breaking the glass back.

Best Samsung Phone – Foldable: Galaxy Z Fold 3

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the latest and greatest foldable smartphone from Samsung. While it appears to be similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, there’s a lot in this new device to be excited about.

Both the 6.2-inch cover and 7.6-inch Infinity Flex display have a 120Hz refresh rate. They’re also 29% brighter than the previous model. The foldable display is now 80% stronger than before. This is Samsung’s first foldable smartphone to support the S Pen on its internal display.

The hinge has added durability and Flex Mode which allows the hinge to free stand at different angles so that the phone can effectively become its own tripod. You can even wirelessly charge it like that!

Samsung has used its toughest aluminium yet for the device’s body. This is also the world’s first foldable smartphone that’s water-resistant. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

The Snapdragon 888 powers this flagship Samsung phone with 12GB of RAM as standard. It’s available with 256GB and 512GB of non-expandable storage options. This is Samsung’s most feature-packed and powerful foldable smartphone yet. Granted, the cameras could have been better, but the Galaxy Z Fold 3 more than makes up for that in other departments.

It goes without saying that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 deserves a place on this list. It’s truly shaping up to be one of the best Samsung phones ever made.

Reasons to buy: Water resistance, S Pen support, great performance and useful features.

Who should buy: Power users, loyal Samsung fans, hype beasts and influencers.

Best Samsung Phone – Budget: Galaxy A32

The Galaxy A32 is a solid budget smartphone from Samsung. It features a 6.40inch Super AMOLED display with a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. The chipset is a bit slow for heavy tasks but that’s to be expected from a device in this price range.

It’s a great budget smartphone nonetheless. The AMOLED display is great and the camera setup is actually decent. The 5,000mAh battery is also a big plus point.

Reasons to buy: AMOLED display, refreshed design, 5,000mAh battery, good camera performance.

Who should buy: Budget smartphone buyers and those who need great battery life.

Why These Are The Best Samsung Phones This Month

Samsung’s strategy has long been to offer something for everyone. We now have one of Samsung’s most diverse smartphone lineups. You have an absolute spec king in the Galaxy S21 Ultra to the extent of being over the top. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is certainly one of the best Note devices yet from Samsung as it builds on the feedback from Note loyalists and provides them with improvements they have long been asking for.

The Galaxy Z Flip is in a league of its own when it comes to foldable smartphones. There’s really no true successor for it on the market yet. It’s also a refreshingly unique device, perfect for those who are fed up with the monotony of smartphone design. The Galaxy S20 FE may have been out for almost a year now but it’s still a great value for the kind of specs it offers.

Samsung has capitalized on the Galaxy A50’s popularity for the Galaxy A51 and made it a worthy successor. Now, the Galaxy A52 is one of the best mid-range smartphones on the market. The Galaxy A52 does everything that you’d expect a device of its caliber to do without breaking a sweat. Lastly, customers won’t have much to complain about with the Galaxy A32. It’s incredibly clear in its purpose and because of that, it’s worthy of being on this list.
