The iPhone 13 has better storage choices than your Galaxy S21

Apple announced the iPhone 13 today. The iPhone 13 comes in four models: The iPhone 13 mini, the regular iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Rumor had it that Apple would finally be ditching the 64GB storage tier for its iPhones this year, effectively bringing them on par with Samsung’s flagship phones.

Now, it’s official: All iPhone 13 models come with a minimum of 128GB of storage. All models also come in 256GB and 512GB configurations, while the Pro and Pro Max can be purchased with up to 1TB of storage. And that means that Apple is now offering you a better deal/more choices when it comes to storage capacity than Samsung.

The shoe’s on the other foot

Samsung has made plenty of decisions that have outraged its fans in recent years. Removing the headphone jack after mocking Apple for doing the same, for one. And this year, Samsung removed the microSD slot on its Galaxy S line with the Galaxy S21 series of phones.

The company also stopped providing a 1TB variant of its flagships back in 2019. Right now, the company’s non-Ultra Galaxy S phones and the Galaxy Z Flip series only let you choose between 128GB and 256GB configurations while the Ultra models and Galaxy Z Fold series go up to a maximum of 512GB.

Samsung is probably not bringing the microSD slot back to its flagships, partly because of the partnership it has with Microsoft that includes pushing its customers to use OneDrive cloud storage. It could reintroduce the 1TB option with the Galaxy S22 series for those who want to have as much local storage as possible, though we’re not too hopeful.

Fresh Galaxy M52 5G leaked renders reveal frosty white color option

Another round of Galaxy M52 5G press renders leaked online. The images reveal a frosty white color option and reconfirm the overall design. Once again, the Galaxy M52 5G has three rear-facing cameras aligned vertically, a glossy, striped back panel, and an Infinity-O display.

The Galaxy M52 5G can also be identified by its color-matching metallic frame and side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Three color options have been revealed — black, blue, and white — and they all have the same striped pattern, as seen in the image galleries below (via WinFuture).

It’s difficult to tell from renders, but the Galaxy M52 5G should have a large 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display capable of a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s supposed to be driven by the Snapdragon 778G chipset and a 5,000mAh battery with 25W super-fast charging. Those three cameras are supposed to clock in at 64MP, 12MP, and 5MP, while the selfie sensor should have a 32MP resolution.

An exact launch date has not been confirmed, but word on the street is that the Galaxy M52 5G should be released in India before the end of the month. Samsung recently published support pages for the Galaxy M52 5G on its French portal, confirming in a roundabout way that the phone should also be released in Europe at some point in the near future.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G costs just shy of $900 thanks to new deal

The S Pen is no longer exclusive to the Galaxy Note series, now that both the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3 support it. Nevertheless, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra arguably remains the best S Pen-enabled device out there, on account of having a built-in S Pen holster, if nothing else. And the great news is that the standard and Ultra models are now available at a discount.

Amazon is selling the unlocked Galaxy Note 20 5G for $749.99, down from $999. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G is available for $899 after a $300 price cut. Both models come with 128GB of built-in storage.

The fate of the Galaxy Note series remains uncertain, but if it won’t make a comeback next year, this might be one of your last chances to experience the S Pen in its original form factor.

In addition to the S Pen flagship now costing less, Amazon is making it easier for Samsung fans to buy a Wireless Charging Pad, at least for a limited time. And as of this writing, the 2019 edition is available for $19.99 after a 60% price cut. Likewise, the retailer is selling the Galaxy SmartTag for $19, down from $29.99.

Sony’s PS5 M.2 update goes live tomorrow, 980 PRO SSD gets a discount

Samsung confirmed yesterday that Sony is about to release a firmware update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, which will enable the M.2 SSD storage expansion slot. The company didn’t reveal the exact launch date, but Sony broke the silence today and announced that the highly-anticipated firmware update is exiting the beta stages and going live for the PS5 tomorrow, September 15.

With the new update, PS5 owners can install an M.2 SSD and expand the internal storage. And while PS5 owners can’t play games off of the external drive, they will be able to store and play them from the M.2 SSD. There are some requirements, and Sony recommends an SSD that can achieve a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. Of course, Samsung recommends the 980 PRO SSD with sequential read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s.

The 980 PRO probably is one of the best SSDs on the market for PS5 users, and the fact that Samsung mentioned the firmware update a day before Sony made its announcements might not be a coincidence. It suggests that the two companies may have worked together to ensure compatibility between their products, which is why Samsung had the inside scoop.

Samsung’s offering the 980 PRO at a discount

If you are looking to buy a 980 PRO in anticipation of the PS5’s imminent firmware update, Samsung is currently selling its PCIe 4.0 SSD at a discount. The 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB 980 PRO models are now available at Samsung’s online store for $89.99, $109.99, $189.99, and $379.99, respectively.

Shipping dates can vary depending on the SSD’s storage capacity, so keep an eye on that if you want to use the M.2 slot on your PS5 as soon as possible.

Galaxy A52s 5G pre-orders open in Vietnam next week, Samsung confirms

The Galaxy A52s is one of the best mid-range phones in recent years, Samsung or otherwise, and customers in Vietnam will soon be able to pre-order it in anticipation of a market release later this month.

Samsung announced today that the Galaxy A52s 5G will be available for pre-order in Vietnam beginning September 20. The pre-order period will end on September 23, and the phone will hit the shelves a day later on September 24 for the suggested retail price of VND 10,990,000 ($438).

The price corresponds to the 128GB model. The 256GB Galaxy A52s 5G will go on sale for VND 11,790,000 ($518). Both variants have 8GB of RAM and support up to 1TB of external storage via microSD.

The Galaxy A52s 5G is very similar to the Galaxy A52 5G, and that’s definitely a good place from which to take inspiration. However, the refreshed model is even better, thanks to the upgraded Snapdragon 778G chipset. The phone will be available in Vietnam in four color options: black, green, purple, and white.

Other impressive specs include a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, the stereo speakers, and the 4,500mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. Over the past couple of weeks, Samsung also announced the Galaxy A52s in Europe, India, the UK, and South Korea.

Pre-orders in Vietnam are accompanied by instant cashback offers and other goodies including gifts worth VND 1,000,000 ($44).

Suppliers are competing over the most critical component of Samsung’s foldables

Another part manufacturer is looking to get a piece of the foldable smartphone market by lending its expertise to Samsung. Reportedly, a company called AU Flex wants to become a hinge supplier for the Korean tech giant, though it might not be the only one aiming to fill this role.

Samsung reportedly wants to increase its foldable device yearly production capacity to 25 million. Because of this, at least one component manufacturer — AU Flex — is now looking to sign an agreement with Samsung. However, it might not be the only one. Supplying parts to Samsung — especially for the emerging foldable segment — can mean significant profit for a supply chain company, so evidently, competition is heating up.

The foldable form factor is creating new revenue avenues for suppliers

According to unnamed industry sources cited by The Elec, another company that’s looking to become a hinge supplier for Samsung’s foldable devices is Fine Technix. This supplier is already collaborating with Samsung and is presently responsible for supplying metal backplates for the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Aside from these two potential new suppliers, Samsung is already working with two other companies to acquire its hinges, and they don’t seem to want to walk away anytime soon. KH Vatec has been Samsung’s primary supplier of hinge technologies for foldable smartphones since before the original Galaxy Fold was introduced in 2019. A year later, the Korean tech giant also secured S-Connect as a hinge supplier.

Simply put, with Samsung now aiming to sell millions more foldable devices every year, its current two suppliers might not be able to handle the load. For suppliers who aren’t in Samsung’s supply chain yet, hinge technologies represent new avenues of revenue, as well as an opportunity to establish themselves as main players in the emerging high-end foldable segment early on.

One UI 4.0 beta now live for Galaxy S21 users in the USA and Europe

As you probably know by now, Samsung launched the One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series earlier today. And thankfully, customers in the USA and Europe — or at least Germany — don’t have to wait any longer before they can take Android 12 and One UI 4.0 beta out for a test drive. It’s live right now, allowing fans to try out all the new features and provide valuable feedback to Samsung’s software development team.

For the time being, the One UI 4.0 beta firmware is available only for the Galaxy S21 flagship series, but other devices are likely to join the beta program before the end of the year.

One UI 4.0 refines the user experience with new UI enhancements and introduces a handful of new features — some of which were inspired by Android 12. There’s a new “Labs” advanced feature that allows all apps to be used in split-screen and pop-up view modes, and of course, Samsung added new animations (and charging animations), more privacy controls, some Camera UI changes, and more.

We highlighted 18 new changes in One UI 4.0 beta on camera, and you can check the video below and the full changelog for more details. We’ll continue using Android 12 and One UI 4.0 beta for weeks to come, and we’ll walk you through more features and changes soon. Stay tuned, and feel free to let us know in the comment section if you’re planning to participate in the One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series in the USA or Europe.

New Samsung Music update is here with multi-pane UI for foldable phones

Samsung has released a new update for the Samsung Music app that is designed to take advantage of the large foldable screens on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup and its tablets. Version 16.2.26 of the app introduces a multi-column view that gives you quick access to your list of tracks on the ‘now playing’ screen by putting them on the left side of the screen.

Earlier, the now playing screen would take up the entire display. Samsung is basically enabling the Music app to take better advantage of the big screens on its foldables and tablets (we assume it will do so for more of its apps in the near future). However, it would be great if one could browse albums, playlists and more on the left side of the screen in multi-column view – at this time you can only see queued tracks.

In addition to multi-column view, the latest Samsung Music update makes the sleep timer feature less jarring. Now, when you set a sleep timer to automatically stop playing music at a particular time, the music that’s playing will fade out instead of stopping abruptly.

The update also adds a storage permission prompt when you try to export or import playlist backup files on devices running Android 11 and later and changes the background color of the mini player. It’s available now for download from the Galaxy Store and also from our APK archives.

One UI 4.0 is Samsung not fixing something that’s not broken

We’ve been in this business for long enough to remember when Samsung’s custom Android skin left a lot to be desired. It was unnecessarily bloated with features that most users wouldn’t even try for the sake of novelty. Even the visual elements were far from the sleek and modern UI we know today.

From TouchWiz to Samsung Experience, there was a lot in them that was broken and needed fixing. All of that changed when the first iteration of One UI was released with Android 9 Pie. This was the first major overhaul of Samsung’s custom skin in years.

One UI was built from the ground up to help users focus on things that really matter. Samsung wanted to achieve harmony between its hardware and software. As its devices got bigger, it wanted to make one-handed use easier.

The first One UI version achieved all of that. Samsung continued to refine this formula with every subsequent iteration. In the years that followed, it became more about refining the software instead of introducing new features just for the heck of it.

One UI 3.0 was the perfect representation of the new direction Samsung was taking with its custom skin. Light on big-ticket items, One UI 3.0 overhauled the look and feel of the software. Samsung made a conscious effort to make the entire UI look more clean and sleek.

The incremental updates released thereafter have introduced minor feature additions but major new features have been few and far between. What Samsung is doing instead is making existing features better and working on making its UI more aesthetically pleasing.

So it didn’t really surprise us to see that One UI 4.0 was lacking major new features as well. While you could be forgiven for expecting that a major One UI release would include big-ticket items, Samsung is now taking a different approach.

The company launched the One UI 4.0 Android 12 beta program today. The full changelog and our One UI 4.0 vs One UI 3.1 comparison reveals little in the way of new features. Refinement seems to be the objective of this release.

The feedback we’ve seen from a lot of Samsung fans has been one of disappointment. It’s as if they wanted the company to bring major new features. One UI 4.0 hasn’t met their expectations because it’s a little light on those.

Samsung has approached One UI 4.0 with a different mindset. There’s not much that was broken on the versions that it succeeds. Each One UI iteration has been consistently better than the one before it.

That’s especially true when you consider the fact that Android 12, the major OS upgrade that’s the bedrock of One UI 4.0, introduces new features that One UI has had for a couple of years now. It’s as if Google’s trying to play catch up with Samsung’s software and not the other way around.

What fans need to realize now is that Samsung can’t go back to its old ways of stuffing its software with features that don’t really achieve much. It can’t go back to bloating the software just for the sake of having a big list of new features to boast about. We do believe that to be the right decision.

Refinement is the name of the game. There’s always room for refinement. The more Samsung can improve its existing functionality and add value, the better its devices are going to be. It could also deliver further improvements in terms of speed and performance.

Less really is more these days. We want our phones to be nimble and cater to increasingly complex workloads. There’s no need for Samsung to change much on One UI as it’s basically like a stable rock already. So why fix something when it’s not broken.

Carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 2 picks up the September 2021 security update

Last week, the carrier-locked version of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 had received the August 2021 security update. Now, the foldable smartphone has received the September 2021 security update. Usually, a new update is first released to the international version of the phone and then to the carrier-locked version. However, the September update hasn’t been released to the international version yet.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has started getting a new software update on Sprint and T-Mobile networks in the US. The update comes with firmware version F916USQS2EUH7 and includes the September 2021 security patch. A few days ago, Samsung mentioned that its latest security patch fixes more than 50 privacy and security-related bugs and vulnerabilities. The update might also include device stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy Z Fold 2 user on Sprint’s or T-Mobile’s network in the US, you might have received a notification of the new update. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and clicking on Download and install. You can also flash the firmware manually after downloading the latest firmware file from our firmware database.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2 last year with Android 10-based One UI 2.5. Earlier this year, the smartphone received the Android 11-based One UI 3 update. A few days ago, it received the One UI 3.1.1 update with multi-column layouts for various stock apps, Flex Mode Panel, improved multitasking on the bigger display, other minor improvements.

Samsung promises to create 30,000 new jobs in South Korea

Some time ago, Samsung promised that it would create about 50,000 retail jobs in India via its DOST (Digital and Offline Service Training) initiative in India.

It has a similar initiative planned for South Korea, which will create up to 30,000 jobs in the country. The program will be spread out over a span of three years. The initiative is a part of Samsung’s larger CSR (corporate social responsibility) plan that has been in place for quite some time.

Samsung rebuilding its workforce to remain competitive

Some of the existing programs such as C-Lab Outside and Smart Factory will get expanded as well. Samsung will also double the recruitment in its Samsung Software Academy For Youth (SSAFY) from 1,000 to 2,000.

Recently released company boss Lee Jae-yong made a rare public appearance at the event, which was also attended by bigwigs such as Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum and Labor Minister An Kyung-duk. Samsung has followed KT Corp’s footsteps to become the second company to participate in the South Korean Government’s Youth Hope ON program.

Samsung, much like many other OEMs out there, has to cut a significant portion of its workforce over the past year due to the ongoing pandemic in markets such as China, India and even South Korea. These new initiatives are likely Samsung’s way of rebuilding its workforce; something that it desperately needs to remain competitive.

Galaxy Buds 2 are getting a new update you wouldn’t want to miss

Did you pick up a pair of the new Galaxy Buds 2? They are the latest and definitely one of the best Samsung earbuds so far. They have been on the market for a couple of weeks now and the response from customers has been great.

Samsung continues to make tweaks to the device’s software in order to provide a better user experience. It sent out the first firmware update for the earbuds not that long ago and now it’s rolling out the second update.

Latest Galaxy Buds 2 firmware update rolling out today

The firmware update that Samsung released for the Galaxy Buds 2 brought a handful of new features. It included the ability to enable Ambient Mode during calls as well as Ambient Sound customization.

As we pointed out in our Galaxy Buds 2 review, these are very capable earbuds with great sound quality and robust ANC performance. The price at which they’re being offered make the Galaxy Buds 2 a very compelling option.

The Galaxy Buds 2 are receiving a new firmware update today. Version number R177XXU0AUI2 is being rolled out for these Samsung wireless earbuds. There’s not much in the way of new features but the changelog mentions that this update improves system stability and reliability.

You’d want to get today’s update to ensure that your Galaxy Buds 2 are performing to the best of their ability. The update is rolling out now and should be available to users in all regions shortly.
