AT&T sending out May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

AT&T has started sending out an update containing the May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge. Although we’re already 12 days into May, it’s good to see that the carrier hasn’t forgotten to issue the patch, even though it is yet to officially detail the new update on its website. It seems like this is merely a security update so there won’t be any new features on board.

Devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5 (unlocked) have seen the May security patch already. If the update hasn’t reached your device yet, head over to the Settings » About device page to try pulling it manually. Have you seen the update on your AT&T Galaxy S7 or the S7 edge? Make sure you let us know in the comments below.

Hardware and pricing of the Galaxy C5 and C7 revealed

The Galaxy C5 and the Galaxy C7 are gearing up for a release as we all know. It has already been ascertained that China will be the first to get them. Images of the Galaxy C5 have given us a very good idea of what to expect. Chinese site myDrivers has now accessed more details on the handset courtesy of a source. We can see the hardware specifications of the two handsets listed out on a piece of paper, so it’s possible that someone with inside knowledge of Samsung’s operations in China was responsible for this leak.

Either way, it’s claimed that the Galaxy C7 and the Galaxy C5 will feature 5.7 and 5.2-inch 1080p displays respectively. Further, the handsets are also said to be sporting the octa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 617 chipset, a 16-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

As for the pricing, the Galaxy C5, and the C7 will supposedly cost 1,599 CNY ($245) and 1,799 CNY ($276) respectively. The leak mentions that this pricing will only be valid online, suggesting that the handsets might be slightly more expensive via brick-and-mortar retail stores.

Samsung begins Galaxy Note 6 firmware development

Only a few hours ago we heard that the Galaxy Note 6 could be made official in mid-August, and we have now heard from our sources that Samsung has started development on the software of its next phablet flagship. The build number for the initial firmware is N930FXXU0APE1, which is likely to change with the retail unit of the device. As we exclusively reported earlier this week, at least one new software feature is confirmed, and we will probably see Samsung building in new S Pen-related features as well.

Firmware development is usually a sign that a device’s hardware has reached its final form and is unlikely to get any major changes as far as the specs are concerned. Rumors suggest the Galaxy Note 6 will feature a 5.8-inch ‘Slim RGB’ AMOLED display, the Snapdragon 823 SoC/a higher clocked Exynos 8890, 6GB of RAM, the same 12-megapixel camera as seen on the S7 lineup but with improved camera software, and a 4,000 mAh battery. We can expect Android N to be powering the software out of the box.

The Galaxy S7 didn’t get one, but the Note 6 will come with a USB Type-C port in all likelihood and be water and dust resistant like the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. One rumor also called for a Galaxy Note 6 Lite with the Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM, but there isn’t exactly a high chance of Samsung making a lesser variant of the phablet. What is possible is a curved version, but we haven’t seen anything yet to support that particular rumbling from the rumor mill.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the Galaxy Note 6 will be making its way to Europe.

Themes Thursday: Some excellent themes released this week

We’re back with this week’s Themes Thursday! Samsung has released 88 themes for its compatible Galaxy smartphones this week, and some of them are really good-looking.

The Phix Theme is one of the best themes from this week. It has a clean look, thanks to well-designed icons, a minimalistic wallpaper, and a good color combination. [Kendi] Zorfeu and [Kendi] Zorflix themes look gorgeous as well. The [V] Ice Cube theme comes with square icons and a light wallpaper while the Paper theme has a green wallpaper and circular icons.

One can’t go wrong with any of these themes, but since everyone has a different opinion, it is possible that you might have liked a theme that we’ve not mentioned here. Which theme did you like?

How to use Screen off memo on your Marshmallow-running Galaxy Note 4

Now that the long-awaited Android Marshmallow update is rolling out to Galaxy Note 4 devices all over the world, it’s time to take a look at the one feature that makes this update worth the wait: Screen off memo.

Previously, Screen off memo was only available to Galaxy Note 5 users, or to Note 4 users by means of an unofficial port. Now, Android Marshmallow brings it to the device in an entirely official manner. However, after performing the update it is not switched on by default.

To get Screen-off memo up and running, head into your Note 4′s Settings, and select the S Pen option. Scroll down to the Pen detachment section of the menu, and check the Screen off memo item. It’s that easy, yes.

samsung-galaxy-note-4-marshmallow-screen-off-memo-how-to

Now, with the screen of your Galaxy Note 4 turned off, take out the S Pen and behold, you can write or draw directly onto the display. When done, hit Save, but you can also simply put your S Pen back into the phone. The display will turn off, and your note will automatically be saved, as a notification will tell you when you turn your Note 4 back on again.

It is always nice to see OEMs bring completely new features to devices that did not originally have them. Samsung has done this many times in the past, like when the Galaxy S3 received multi-window support long after its initial release. Particularly for European Note 4 users, Screen off memo is a welcome feature, bringing at least the most important S Pen feature of the Galaxy Note 5 to the continent that never saw the release of that phone.

Of course,  if you’ve got a Galaxy Note Edge Screen-off memo will be available on your device too, once it gets in line for the Marshmallow update.

[Poll] Do you use the rotating bezel on your Gear S2?

The Gear S2 is one of the best devices Samsung has ever launched. Not just because it’s just a great smartwatch, but also because it’s a device that Samsung took the time to perfect instead of rushing it out the door as it usually does with most of its mobile products. It has a great design, and the Gear S2 also introduced us to what is probably the most intuitive way to control a smartwatch yet: the rotating bezel.

Samsung took a traditional watch feature and turned it into the primary way of navigation on its latest smartwatch, but as someone who has used other smartwatches before making the jump to the Gear S2, I often find myself ignoring the rotating bezel and using the touchscreen itself. It’s a force of habit, and I often find myself reminding myself of the bezel in the middle of swiping through the interface. It has barely been a month since I switched to the Gear S2, so it’s possible I’ll stop touching that tiny display and start rotating that ring on top of the watch after a couple of weeks.

But it’s also possible that will never happen, and it’s likely there are many users out there that keep forgetting the nifty rotating bezel on their Gear S2. Are you one of them? Did it take time for you to start using the bezel, or did it become a habit from the very first day? Tell us in the comments and also let us know through the poll below!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung’s new Ultra Black technology will improve picture quality in bright conditions

It’s a well-known fact that most people watch TV with a light on and not in a pitch-dark environment as intended, but what they may not be aware is that doing so actually hinders picture quality as both excess artificial and natural lighting creates a glare on the display which leads to discoloration and oversaturation. However, Samsung has today unveiled a new technology, coined Ultra Black, that it will bake into all of its upcoming SUHD TVs in order to deliver an “optimum viewing experience, regardless of consumers’ indoor lighting conditions.”

We’ve already reported that the firm has started producing a unique Quantum Dot panel, which significantly boost brightness and clarity compared to the standard OLED display while at the same time keeping energy consumption to a minimum, but it now looks like the manufacturer will apply the new Ultra Black coating to the screen, too, with the hope of eradicating glare from unintended light sources. The technology behind the Ultra Black covering isn’t overly complex, either. The coating itself consists of a layer of bumps that can either absorb or redirect external light without hindering light emitted from the panel.

Oculus brings virtual reality documentary Nomad to the Gear VR

Samsung and Oculus are working together to bring more virtual reality content for Gear VR owners. Hitman Go was announced for the Gear VR yesterday, and now Nomads, a virtual reality documentary, is available to be viewed on Samsung’s virtual reality headset.

Nomads, which is created by Montreal-based VR studio Felix & Paul, takes viewers through lives of people in three different parts of the world: Mongolian steppes with a group of yak herders, the Maasai tribe in Kenya, and Borneo’s Bajau tribe in the Malay Archipelago. There are three 12-minute long chapters, which were already screened at Sundance and Tribeca film festivals.

Oculus said that one million people used the Gear VR last month, and we know that virtual reality is picking up steam. Nomad looks like the first sincere attempt at making virtual reality documentary. Samsung had also released a virtual reality video series GONE along with behind the scenes video clips.
