Galaxy Note 10 camera setup may look like this

The rumor mill appears to be convinced that the Galaxy Note 10 camera setup will look similar to the iPhone, in that it will be positioned vertically. That’s certainly going to be a new look for the Note lineup. The existing device, the Galaxy Note 9, has a prominently positioned horizontal camera setup at the back.

A crude sketch making the rounds on Weibo suggests what the camera placement might be like on the Galaxy Note 10. It lines up with earlier reports about a vertical camera setup for Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

Galaxy Note 10 camera setup could be offset to one side

We have already reported exclusively that Samsung will offer two models of the Galaxy Note 10. They are expected to feature 6.28-inch and 6.75-inch displays with triple and quad camera systems respectively. There will also be 5G variants of each model.

This sketch probably represents the quad camera system which would include a Time-of-Flight camera like the Galaxy S10 5G in addition to the standard, wide, and telephoto lenses. The Galaxy Note 10 could feature Samsung’s new 5x telephoto sensor. There’s no way to definitively say that this is what the setup would look like on the Galaxy Note 10. There’s nothing in the sketch to suggest that it’s for a Samsung smartphone. It’s only the Chinese rumor mill which seems convinced that it’s for the Galaxy Note 10.

If anything, it suggests that the device’s vertical camera will be offset instead of being in the center. The latter may not be possible as it will take up precious space that would otherwise accommodate the 4,500mAh battery. It also raises the possibility that the heart rate sensor could get the ax.

Make what you will of it. We’re bound to hear more conflicting views about the Galaxy Note 10 in the weeks to come. Samsung isn’t due to launch its next flagship smartphone for a couple of months at the very least.

Samsung confirms June 11 launch for the Galaxy M40 in India

Samsung India has officially confirmed the June 11 launch date for the Galaxy M40. The date was tipped by YouTuber Gaurav Chaudhary of Technical Guruji in an exclusive first-look video of the device earlier this week. The Galaxy M40 will be the fourth member of Samsung’s highly successful Galaxy M series. And just like the previous three models, it will be an online-exclusive device available via Amazon India and the Samsung eStore starting 6 PM IST on June 11.

Infinity-O display, Snapdragon 675, and more

Samsung India has just published a microsite teasing the upcoming Galaxy M40. The company has shared some images of the device, highlighting its Infinity-O display, triple rear camera setup, and the Snapdragon 6 series processor. While the company didn’t go into details about the processor, the Galaxy M40’s Geekbench benchmark has already revealed that the phone will come with the Snapdragon 675 SoC, 6GB RAM, and Android 9 Pie. And as we had exclusively revealed, there should be 128GB of internal storage.

The triple rear camera setup is placed vertically, with the sensor at the center getting a circular ring around it. There’s an LED flash just below the three cameras. The images on Samsung’s Galaxy M40 teaser microsite also confirm the presence of a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the phone. From the looks of it, the Galaxy M40 will be identical to the Galaxy A8s in appearance.

Samsung is yet to officially say anything about the pricing of the Galaxy M40. However, rumors suggest that the device will be priced at somewhere around ₹20,000 (~$290). We will have to wait and see if more details surface in the coming days ahead of the official launch.

Exclusive: Galaxy Watch successor in the works, here are some details

Samsung is working on the successor to the Galaxy Watch according to information we’ve received from our sources. After the Galaxy Watch, Samsung released the Galaxy Watch Active, a fitness-focused follow-up similar to how the Gear Sport followed the Gear S3. Like the Gear Sport, the Galaxy Watch Active comes in just one screen size (1.1 inches), and it also misses out on the rotating bezel ring. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your existing smartwatch or looking to purchase your first smartwatch and didn’t find the Galaxy Watch Active a very attractive option, your search may come to an end in the next few months.

Samsung’s next watch may have a 5G variant for the US

The Galaxy Watch successor will have model numbers SM-R820 and SM-R830 for the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-only variants and SM-R825 and SM-R835 for the LTE variants. Yes, there will be two models like the Galaxy Watch, but it remains to be seen if Samsung will stick to the same size choices (42mm and 46mm). There may also be a 5G variant for the US with model numbers SM-R827 and SM-R837. It would make sense for Samsung to offer a 5G smartwatch to go along with its 5G smartphones as part of its push to make the new connectivity standard more mainstream, and by the time the new watch comes out, 5G networks in the US will also be available to a wider audience.

Unfortunately, we can’t say when Samsung’s next flagship smartwatch will be released. There’s currently no firmware development going on for it, but we’re assuming Samsung will be hoping to launch it around the same time as the Galaxy Note 10. We’re told the color options for the watch include black, silver, and gold, but there may be more on offer when it goes on sale. And finally, there’s 4GB of internal storage, which would be the same as every other Galaxy smartwatch.

Will the next Galaxy smartwatch have a rotating bezel?

What’s the Galaxy Watch successor going to be called? We’d wager it’s going to launch as the Galaxy Watch 2, although that cannot be confirmed at this moment. We’re just hoping Samsung hasn’t decided to permanently remove the bezel ring from its smartwatches, as it’s what makes the company’s smartwatches stand out in the crowd. The Galaxy Watch Active isn’t ruined by the lack of a rotating bezel as much as we had expected, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be disappointed to see the bezel ring disappear entirely from Samsung’s smartwatch lineup.

Galaxy Xcover 4s gets Bluetooth certification, launch imminent

Samsung has a new rugged smartphone under its Galaxy Xcover series in the works for some time now. The device, carrying the model number SM-G398F, was spotted on Geekbench last week, a day before it was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. While the model number suggested the device to launch as Galaxy Xcover 5, a Dutch e-commerce website recently listed it as Xcover 4s. And it appears to be true, as the Galaxy Xcover 4s has just been granted the Bluetooth certification.

Galaxy Xcover 4s launching soon

An unannounced Samsung smartphone bearing the model number SM-G398FN and the Galaxy Xcover 4s moniker has just been certified by the Bluetooth SIG. It is the same device that was listed by the Dutch e-commerce website CentralPoint last week. The retailer suggested the phone to arrive in early June with a price tag of €249. Bluetooth SIG has also certified a dual SIM variant of the Galaxy Xcover 4s. And apart from confirming its marketing name, the certification also reveals the support for Bluetooth 5.0.

To recall, the Xcover 4 was launched for €259 all the way back in 2017. Its successor will understandably feature upgraded internals. The Xcover 4s will be powered by the Exynos 7885 SoC with 3GB of RAM, 1GB more than its predecessor. It should also come with Android Pie onboard while flaunting a similar military-grade ruggedness. The device is said to pack the same 2800mAh battery inside.

No other details about the Galaxy Xcover 4s are available at the moment. They should start popping up in the coming days as we inch closer to its release.

Samsung has pulled the bug-filled latest Galaxy S10 software update

We reported yesterday that the latest Galaxy S10 software update (XXU1ASE5) had quite a few bugs. Those of you who updated also shared your experiences in the comments section. It’s safe to say that serious action was required on Samsung’s part to address the matter.

Samsung has taken action by pulling the update. It’s no longer available for download and we’ll now have to wait for another version. There’s no saying how long it might take for Samsung to release it.

Latest Galaxy S10 software update has been pulled

Many Galaxy S10 owners had complained about bugs after they had updated the firmware. The most common issue involved third-party apps freezing for no apparent reason. We had experienced that on our Galaxy S10 units as well. Twitter and Nova Launcher were two of the apps most affected by this problem.

We also had readers reach out to us and complain that even the phone itself was freezing at times. They then had to restart the phone which isn’t something that most people want to do unless it’s absolutely necessary. Some even reported issues with the fingerprint sensor becoming slow to respond.

There were no temporary fixes for these issues. Restarting the phone made no difference and a factory reset was useless. It was evident that the update has some fundamental issues which needed to be resolved. Samsung has come to terms with that. It has pulled the update and will now take some time to fix these issues before rolling it out once again.

That’s a shame for those who were waiting for this update. It did bring an improved Night mode for the camera among other major enhancements. They’ll now have to wait for a bit longer before they can try the new features.

New Galaxy Fold release date unlikely to be in June

There’s more uncertainty about the new Galaxy Fold release date ever since it was delayed from April 26. Samsung had to delay the release due to some issues with its foldable smartphone that needed sorting out. The company hasn’t confirmed a new release date since then.

Recent reports had suggested that the issues had been resolved and that Samsung would release the device in June. Samsung’s mobile boss had himself said over two weeks ago that a new date will be announced soon. A new report from South Korea claims that we may not see the Galaxy Fold come out next month.

New Galaxy Fold release date still remains a mystery

The report mentions that Samsung did have an internal goal of releasing the Galaxy Fold in June. However, it seems that the company needs more time to be certain that the hardware changes it has made are up to the mark. It was previously said that Samsung would begin network tests of the Galaxy Fold by mid-May prior to a release in June. That may not be the case anymore.

It’s also pertinent to note that Samsung now has more breathing space due to Huawei’s ongoing troubles. It had initially rushed to get the Galaxy Fold out because it wanted to be the first company to sell a foldable smartphone. Huawei’s foldable smartphone was expected to arrive this summer but it may face delays due to its troubles with the US government. Samsung doesn’t need to rush anymore. It can take extra time to be absolutely certain of the changes made before releasing the device.

The report does mention that Samsung remains in a position to announce the new Galaxy Fold release date in a few weeks. It’s also possible that the handset may arrive in South Korea first now. A Samsung Electronics official cited in the (translated) report says “The release schedule has not been decided, and we are in a position to announce the launch schedule in a few weeks.” Meanwhile, Samsung will automatically cancel all pre-orders of the Galaxy Fold if it’s unable to ship the device before May 31. That’s a done deal now. Best Buy has also canceled all pre-orders of the device.

Samsung’s new power controller chips support 100W fast-charging

Samsung has announced the launch of two new USB Type-C power delivery (PD) controllers. The new SE8A and MM101 PD controllers support up to 100W of power, the company said. Samsung’s current super fast charging in the Galaxy S10 5G supports 25W of power.

Samsung says its new PD controllers can be used for a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and monitors. It has already begun the mass production of SE8A. The MM101 is currently sampling with the company’s clients.

First PD controller to embed Secure Element

SE8A is the first PD controller to combine a Secure Element (CC EAL5+ equivalent) with a power controller into a single chip. This allows for some extra measures of protection, such as security key storage, and compact encoding and decoding sensitive data within a device. The SE8A also supports USB Type-C Authentication, effectively preventing misuse of unapproved products. These measures will prevent hacking of the device during charging.

The MM101, meanwhile, supports a symmetric encryption algorithm for product authentication. Safety measures include moisture sensing capabilities to ensure safer charging conditions. Both chips also come with over-voltage protection. The new chips meet the latest USB specification for fast-charging, USB-PD 3.0, to deliver the optimum amount of power for more efficient charging. They also have embedded Flash (eFlash), allowing manufacturers to update the software to meet the latest specifications without hardware modification.
