Unlocked Galaxy S6 going for $100 less on eBay

There are multiple ways for you to purchase one of Samsung’s current flagship devices if you’re in the United States, you can pick one up on installments from a mobile carrier or get it on a conventional service contract. You can even buy it outright if you’re not worried about spending that much money at once. Often eBay plays host to some really good deals that might interest you if you’re looking to purchase the phone outright, and eBay has one right now for the Galaxy S6.

Carriers in the United States are selling the 32GB Galaxy S6 outright for north of $600 but you can head on over to eBay right now and pick one up for $499.99, which is the cheapest price yet for the unlocked variant of this smartphone. You’ll get the G920i variant which is compatible with GSM and LTE networks, it has all the required bands to work on AT&T and T-Mobile. Another advantage of purchasing the handset through this deal is that you can get one in blue aside from gold, white and black. Carriers in the US don’t offer the Galaxy S6 in blue. If you’d rather have the Galaxy S6 edge instead there’s a pretty good deal on that as well.

Samsung sees 2.3% decline in Q2 market share

IDC has released its latest report on the state of the mobile industry for Q2 2015 which it then compares with the same time last year, it measures the number of units shipped and the manufacturer’s current overall market share. The report shows that overall the mobile industry saw an 11.6% year-over-year increase in Q2 2015 with over 337 million units being shipped by the end of the quarter.

Despite the fact that Samsung retains its position as the biggest smartphone vendor in the world the IDC registered a 2.3% decline in the company’s market share by the end of Q2 2015. The company’s overall marketshare declined from 24.8% in Q2 2014 to 21.7% in Q2 2015. A drop was also registered in shipment volumes with 73.2 million units for Q2 2015 as opposed to 74.9 million units during the same period last year. IDC says that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge arrived with mixed results as problems were compounded by supply shortages for the edge variant, all eyes are now on the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ to see if the handsets can improve Samsung’s fortunes in the next quarter.

AT&T releases a minor update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

No, it’s not Android 5.1. That anticipated update hasn’t shown up for the device anywhere except Russia yet, and today’s update for the AT&T model is a minor one that keeps the Android version on 5.0.1. The OTA is a 142 MB download (the firmware version is N910AUCU2COC5) and brings enhancements to Find My Mobile, Reactivation Lock, and “Android OS security.” Yep, that’s about it.

The update should be showing up on your Galaxy Note 4 of its own accord in the next couple of days, but you can also try to make it show up instantly by mashing the Check now button in the Settings » About device » Software updates menu on the phone. A Wi-Fi network is needed for downloading the update for now, so make sure you connect to one before you start waiting for that OTA notification.

Tizen TV gets four new information services from Samsung

Samsung’s Smart TV just got four additional real-time information services which greatly expand the Tizen knowledge center. The information is categorized in sports, news, entertainment and social and it’s all displayed on the right side of the window in a simple menu.

As we’ve recently seen, Samsung is looking to expand its Tizen software by constructing an IoS to interconnect them. You can currently access these four information services with your remote control but if the Internet of Things framework is finished, you will be able to access them with your phone as well.

It’s a pretty good move for Samsung’s Tizen-based Smart TV because it allows you to look up data without having to do any over-complicated task. All you have to do is open a panel, and the news or sport info is presented to you in a friendly format. The box in which the information is displayed is also transparent, so it won’t bother you while you’re watching something else.

What do you think about this new update? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Leaked photos show off Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ boot screens

We’re just a couple of weeks away from Samsung’s official announcement for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+, multiple leaked photos of both devices have already been floating on the internet. Several new leaked photos have appeared online today claiming to show the boot screens of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. Do keep in mind though that there’s always a possibility that these boot screens were fabricated but that they don’t appear to show anything out of the ordinary.

The pictures also reveal the design of both devices, there’s nothing surprising about the Galaxy S6 edge+ since it’s merely an enlarged version of the Galaxy S6 edge. As expected the Galaxy Note 5 appears to borrow major design cues from the Galaxy S6 duo but does pull off that look quite nicely. We have already reported exclusively that the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ will be officially launched on August 12 with shipments starting in select markets by August 21.

Real-time video recording, editing, and sharing are the future of mobile video, Samsung says

Anyone who’s paid attention to the trend of smartphones over the last few years can see significant growth in the capabilities of smartphones. There was a time when camera resolutions weren’t that great (neither were pictures). Now, photography has increased to the point where the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge move us to at least start considering sidelining our DSLRs (on some occasions, that is). While photography has been a huge emphasis within the smartphone world for the last few years, mobile video has moved slower than mobile photography. Mobile video is taking off, as Facebook, Vine, and YouTube are all seeing incredible mobile video uploads on a daily and monthly basis.

Samsung has been known as a trendsetter in the mobile space, with its bright, AMOLED displays, bright screen resolutions, and higher-megapixel cameras. The company has also sparked controversy with its UFS 2.0 tech that moved the company to remove the once-coveted microSD card slot from the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and its change over to wireless charging instead of the removable battery paradigm under which it once operated. As Samsung has shown, it’ll set tech trends even if they aren’t cool at first (think “phablet” here).

The same Samsung behind crazy tech trends is the same Samsung that’s been setting mobile video trends since the company unveiled its first camera smartphone in 2002. The Galaxy S started the trend with high-definition (HD) video, then the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note upped the contest to Full HD (1920 x 1080p)video recording. Samsung continued the 1080p Full HD push in video recording until it unveiled the Galaxy Note 3 in September 2013 as its first smartphone capable of Ultra HD (or 4K UHD) video recording.

Video image stabilization (or VIS) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) were added with the arrival of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 in 2014, but Samsung’s best mobile video experience yet can be found with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, which now have auto real-time HDR and low-light video alongside of video stabilization and OIS. As can be seen with Samsung, the company has always placed itself ahead of the pack when it comes to a stellar mobile experience.

The same trendsetting company is now looking ahead to a future that involves real-time video recording, editing, and sharing. As the company wrote in its most recent blog post,

As it stands today, recording and sharing a video are two separate actions. In the near future, this may become a more streamlined process, as mobile users have signaled the importance of immediacy and high-quality video. Of course, people look to their smartphones to satisfy this need, and Samsung is prepared to deliver.

If the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are any indication of the Korean manufacturer’s best efforts, the future of mobile video will push pass the current Ultra HD maximum standard to cinematic quality, DCI-standard video quality.

Samsung to enhance mobile security with Galaxy Note 5

Looks like Samsung is going to put an emphasis on security with the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 which will be an interesting addition. The company has been looking into forensics and various other digital security methods for a while now, so it will be interesting to see what they bring forth.

Oberthur Technologies chief executive Didied Lamouche recently held a small presentation showing us a sneak peek at how the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 will improve security. The upcoming security software that will be featured on the Galaxy Note 5 is going to be a lot faster because it’s going to be linked to the processor, basically creating a faster link between the processor and the local embedded devices. Obviously this also includes the fingerprint scanner which is going to be a lot faster, thus encouraging its use and preventing any eventual data leaks. Here’s what Didied Lamouche had to say about the upcoming tech:

We are in the final talks with three to four major European banks including those in Spain and Poland in order to implement that system (which connects users, devices and solutions) very soon in the market

In his latest conference, Lamouche also took a subtle shot at the Apple-Samsung lawsuit, claiming that the key to the mobile world is openness. Oberthur technologies is also going to sit down and talk with Samsung’s mobile business unit in order to work on future wearable tech.

32GB Galaxy S6 edge now $215 off at eBay

The Galaxy S6 edge is the most innovative smartphone on the market right now, with a unique form factor that seems as though it’s always been meant to be a part of the smartphone experience. At the same time, however, getting a 32GB Galaxy S6 edge has meant shelving out some serious cash, particularly if you’re an AT&T customer. The 32GB Galaxy S6 edge will cost you $815 on AT&T’s network. Oh, the price you pay as an AT&T customer!

Well, if you can’t handle that price, eBay’s got a deal for you. The latest? The AT&T Galaxy S6 edge retails for $599.99 at eBay, which is $215 off the original price (somewhere around 26.38% off the original price). The AT&T GS6 edge is being sold through seller qualitycellz, who currently has a 99.2% positive feedback rating at eBay. In other words, the seller’s quite reliable, if eBay is any indication. The device is unlocked, which means you can use the device with T-Mobile (although the T-Mobile band doesn’t appear as a compatible band) and the device has been inspected.

The Galaxy S6 edge, for those who need a reminder, features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a Quad HD screen resolution of 2,560 x 1,440p. The S6 edge also features a 5MP front camera with an f/1.9 aperture, 16MP back camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and an f/1.9 camera aperture,  Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 7420 processor, and is made of airplane 6013 aluminum and Gorilla Glass 4 that wraps around the display as well as the back of the phone. In-built wireless charging is on board, which should make juicing up a breeze.

And, just think: Incipio’s now made it possible to expand your device storage up to an additional 128GB! With the price drop and a new storage case, Samsung’s most innovative phone yet should remain a hot item until the Korean manufacturer’s Galaxy Note 5 announcement.

Any takers?

Samsung removes 128GB Galaxy S6 and S6 edge options from its Indian website

Samsung’s removal of expandable storage on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge didn’t sit well with many consumers, but the company was kind enough to provide a 128GB storage option for anyone who really needs all that space to be built right into their devices. But the 128GB variants have never been easily available since the S6 duo launched in April, and it seems Samsung has now removed the 128GB option for both devices for the Indian market.

For a price sensitive market like India, the 128GB models of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were rather expensive from the start ($970 and $1,115 respectively), even though Samsung did reduce the price of the two devices in the country by around $70 a few weeks after launch. The high price is no doubt one of the reasons the company has decided to stop selling the highest storage model; it’s possible the omission of the 128GB option is only temporary, though with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ around the corner we’re not sure if Indian consumers will be able to pick up a 128GB Galaxy S6 or S6 edge through official channels ever again.

Do you have a 128GB Galaxy S6 or S6 edge?
