The Galaxy Tab S6 is another UFS 3.0 device that uses F2FS file system

The Galaxy Tab S6 is another brand new Samsung device that has made the switch from the EXT4 file system to F2FS, similar to the Galaxy Note 10 series. We’ve previously explained the main differences between the F2FS and EXT4 file systems so we won’t go too deep into them here, but in a nutshell, F2FS is a newer system which was initially developed by Samsung itself.

F2FS provides higher performance for NAND flash memory thanks to a log-based structure, and if early Note 10 benchmarks are anything to go by, the newer file system should allow the Galaxy Tab S6 to achieve considerably faster random and SQLite write speeds compared to its predecessor and the Galaxy Tab S5e. More so, higher read/write speed should be gained by the Galaxy Tab S6 because it uses the UFS 3.0 storage standard, whereas the Galaxy Tab S5e relies on eMMC storage.

There’s a pattern, hinting that the Galaxy Fold employs F2FS as well

It seems like F2FS is now the file system of choice for Samsung as long as the device using it takes advantage of UFS 3.0 storage. Galaxy Fold enthusiasts should be aware that the foldable phone employs UFS 3.0 too, and in light of this new Tab S6-related finding, it’s fairly safe to assume that the Fold will also rely on the F2FS file system.

As discussed previously, it’s highly unlikely for F2FS to make its way onto older Samsung devices but it could become more prevalent in 2020, at least for future flagships using UFS 3.0 storage. There’s not much known about the Galaxy S11 at this point, but the series is definitely a prime contender.

Galaxy Tab S6 is the world’s first tablet with HDR10+ support

Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy Tab S6, its flagship tablet for the year. It seriously ups Samsung’s tablet game with some new tech one of which is ultra-fast UFS 3.0 storage. Samsung also has a display certification for this flagship product that it would like you to know about. It points out that the Galaxy Tab S6 is the world’s first tablet to receive HDR10+ certification. This means that it can support next-generation HDR video.

This certification has been awarded to the Galaxy Tab S6 after extensive quality testing. This is the first time that the official HDR10+ logo certification has been applied to a tablet. HDR10+ is described as the next-generation open standard for high dynamic range video. It optimizes the brightness levels to provide a more immersive viewing experience.

Galaxy Tab S6 is the first tablet with HDR10+ certification

It’s a step up from static HDR10 which improved the color and contrast of video content. HDR10+ uses dynamic tone mapping that’s specific to each scene. This results in the settings being continuously fine-tuned so that the content plays with more vivid color and better light and shadow details.

The Galaxy Tab S6 features a 10.5-inch WQXGA Super AMOLED display. If there’s ever one certainty about a Samsung flagship it’s that the AMOLED display will be exceptional. Couple that with HDR10+ certification on the Galaxy Tab S6 and you’re got a formidable content consumption machine.

It’s far from the only device in Samsung’s ecosystem to have been awarded with the HDR10+ certification. The Galaxy S10 was actually the first device to support mobile HDR10+. The Galaxy Note 10 has also received the certification. The Galaxy Tab S6 will be available starting August 23 in select markets across the globe. Do check out our Galaxy Tab S6 hands-on if you’re interested in purchasing the device.

[Poll Results!] Which Galaxy Note 10 color do you like the most?

The Galaxy Note 10 series was officially announced today and Samsung revealed all the color options which will be available for both models. There are a total of six colors to choose from, two of which – red and blue – will be launching at a later date only in some countries and might not be available for both Note 10 models. The remaining flavors which should be available worldwide from day one are Aura White, Aura Black, and Aura Glow. Pink is also likely to be available for both models from day one, but it might not launch worldwide.

If you’re in the market for a smartphone wearing a striking color then Aura Glow is probably what you’re looking for. It’s the only color option for the Galaxy Note 10 series that has a gradient effect similar to – and yet still different from – Prism Silver on the Galaxy S10+. All the other Galaxy Note 10 color options are more subdued in this regard and come with a glossy finish. You should be able to get a clearer view from our hands-on experience.

Choosing the right color for your smartphone is entirely subjective and it can be an adventure in itself. You can either make up your mind in an instant or dwell on your options for a while. Or you might be unlucky and like a color option that won’t be available in your region. In the end, you’re hoping that you will make the right choice for a device which will accompany you almost everywhere you go for the next one or two years, or even longer.

Which Galaxy Note 10 color do you like the most? Vote in the poll below and join us in the comment section to discuss more about your color preference.

Results: Aura Glow appears to be the most popular color option with 42 percent of voters choosing it. There’s a very large gap between the first place and the rest, as only 16 percent of votes went towards the Red Galaxy Note 10/10+ in second place. Blue is the third most popular choice with 14 percent of votes, even though availability for both Red and Blue is limited by region. The fourth place with 13 percent of votes goes to Aura White, which is followed by Aura Black with 12 percent. Lastly, Pink was picked by 3 percent of voters.

The Galaxy A10s is Samsung’s second ODM smartphone

As reported a couple of weeks ago, industry watchers predict that Samsung will ship anywhere between 30 to 40 million ODM (original design manufacturer) smartphones by the end of 2019, and it appears that the Galaxy A10s will play a role in this. The Galaxy A10s refresh was introduced earlier this week, and as it turns out, the device isn’t manufactured by Samsung. Instead, according to the phone’s FCC documents, the Galaxy A10s is manufactured by a company in China known as Jiaxing Yongrui Electron Technology.

This effectively means that the Galaxy A10s is Samsung’s second ODM smartphone following the Galaxy A6s launched in China last year. But unlike the Galaxy A6s which remained exclusive to the Chinese market, the new Galaxy A10s is expected to hit the shelves in other countries as well, including India. This would surely help Samsung in achieving the aforementioned 30 to 40 million ODM phone shipments before 2020.

Samsung could further boost its presence in some markets using ODM phones

The purpose of giving another ODM company in China the rights to manufacture a phone under the Samsung brand is to reduce production costs and, ideally, carry some of those savings over to the smartphone’s launch price. The Galaxy A10s has yet to be priced by Samsung but once the company or retailers spill the beans, it will be interesting to see just how affordable it is.

This ODM strategy applies primarily to the budget and mid-range segments, so we don’t expect Samsung’s flagships to become ODM phones anytime soon. But if the decision to rely on an ODM will pay off for low-cost devices then Samsung might be able to increase its presence in China, India, and other markets where it’s been competing (and sometimes losing ground) against Chinese brands. That is, as long as more ODM phones will be released in the future and pricing is competitive.

What will the company’s third ODM phone be? Where and when will it release? Only time will tell. Until then, what are your thoughts on Samsung’s decision to rely more on ODMs for budget phones? Let us know in the comment section.

Samsung Blockchain Keystore gets support for Bitcoin

Samsung has added support for Bitcoin (BTC) tokens on its Blockchain Keystore wallet. According to updated information on the Samsung Developers website, the Blockchain Keystore SDK now supports Bitcoin, Klaytn and Ethereum tokens. Klaytn is a cryptocurrency released recently by the Korean social messaging giant Kakao.

Samsung announced the Blockchain Keystore wallet with the launch of the Galaxy S10 series back in February. However, it was compatible only with Ethereum and Ethereum-derived ERC-20 tokens. The notable exclusion of Bitcoin, the world’s number one cryptocurrency by market cap, left many of its proponents dismayed. They can now rejoice as the Blockchain Keystore SDK now supports their favorite crypto asset.

The Samsung Blockchain Keystore SDK allows Android applications, or DApps, direct communication with the Blockchain Keystore wallet. This will allow users to link blockchain addresses to the wallet, sign cryptocurrency transactions and check the Keystore status. Samsung is currently offering a beta version of the SDK to developers via an application process. The company hopes to release the official version by the end of this year.

Available in select markets

In addition to the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung’s Blockchain Keystore is also supported by the newly announced Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. Availability, however, is limited to select jurisdictions, namely Canada, Germany, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Samsung may expand the service to more regions in the coming months. The Korean giant is also developing an Ethereum based blockchain and may release a token of its own in the near future.

Galaxy Note 10’s PC game streaming app arrives next month

At the Unpacked event last week, Samsung briefly spoke about the Galaxy Note 10’s PC game streaming feature PlayGalaxy Link. The company, however, didn’t provide any details about how the service works or when it is going to be available. We got a little more information about how PlayGalaxy Link works from a hands-on video Samsung posted on its Korean YouTube channel after the event.

Now, TechCrunch is reporting the service will be available as a downloadable app for Android and Windows in early September. It also states the service will be free and leverages low-latency streaming technology from Parsec, a New York-based cloud gaming start-up.

Interestingly, Parsec already has an Android app in early access on Google Play Store, and it is not limited to Samsung devices. This suggests that PlayGalaxy Link is perhaps just another rebranding effort by the Korean company, similar to the Note 10’s Link to Windows feature. It’s not clear if the PlayGalaxy Link app offers any additional features or performance improvements over the Parsec app on Play Store.

Moreover, it is already possible to stream games from PC to your smartphones and tablets using the Steam Link app. In fact, Samsung already has a tweaked version of Steam Link for Galaxy devices in the Galaxy Store, which makes the investment in PlayGalaxy Link all the more puzzling. One immediately apparent advantage Parsec offers over Steam Link is that the former doesn’t require you to be on the same Wi-Fi network to stream games and works even on mobile data.

With Google and Microsoft moving closer to the launch of cloud-based game streaming services, it is possible Samsung is looking beyond what Steam Link has to offer and has bigger plans for the PlayGalaxy Link service down the road.

Galaxy S10 update with August security patch rolling out

The Galaxy S10 lineup is getting a new software update in a number of European markets today. The update brings the security patch for the month of August to the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ and comes with software version G97*FXXS3ASH1. It is rolling out in the Netherlands, the Nordic region, France, Bulgaria, United Kingdom, Romania, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Austria, Hungary, Italy, and the Czech Republic.

Nothing but the new security patch is included in the update, which must be why Samsung has released it in nearly 20 countries at the same time. Almost every previous Galaxy S10 update has debuted in Switzerland before eventually expanding to other markets; the July security update also had a similarly slow rollout despite not including any new features, but hopefully that was just an exception and Samsung won’t make Galaxy S10 owners wait too long for minor updates in the future.

The latest Galaxy S10 update is a 112 MB download over the air. You can grab it for your S10e, S10, or S10+ by tapping the Download and install option in the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. You can also upgrade by downloading the firmware for the update from our firmware archive and flashing it on your device using a Windows PC.

Do let us know if you notice anything new after you’ve updated your phone by leaving a comment below.
